Hers is a very illuminating Amneris. It makes one wonder if the role is actually intermediary between a dramatic soprano and a mezzo, like Eboli. Of course it helps that Dimitrova had an amazing lower register and a dark color in her mid range. The result is wonderful. Amneris is certainly the most interesting and three-dimensional role in Aida and quite possibly has the most innovative and daring music by Verdi.

Yes,Amneris is sung by dramatic Mezzos and dramatic Sopranos alike, because of the rather high tessitura in some parts.

On this occasion the opera should have been called 'Amneris' because even with a star cast Ghena stole the show. Many of the reviews ran headlines such as ' Dimitrova triumphs as Amneris.' She was a wonderful artist and she always delivered the show. She was not a singer who cancelled very often. When the audience booked to hear Ghena they heard Ghena ! May she rest in peace.

How very interesting, I am myself born, raised and still living in Caracas. just a few months before the quarantine I had the pleasure of meeting a retired, very charming baritone in his later years, during a theatre reunion and apparently he was one of the chorus singers and apparent understudy in a couple of operas during the seventies or eighties with Madame Dimitrova, was she singing here at the moment of your acquaintance? I was never able to listen to her in house nor did I ever meet her, which I would have wholeheartedly loved, but provided I was born in 2002 my chances were rather slim.

Love this. I wish she had sung more performances as Amneris. I would also have loved to hear her take as Eboli and Azucena, although I think Amneris was what suited her best. I also wish that she would have tried Ortrud - and I would give anything to hear what I'm sure would have been a thrilling, thundering concert performance of Brunnhilde's Immolation Scene.

And here you can hear that she was not a mezzosprano but a great dramatic soprano. Her low notes ( which are not really low, they are all C4 and higher) lack substance and colour compared with her higher registers. You hear also, that the top notes are not high enough to let her voice really bloom. I can even feel that she would like to go higher at the most dramatc places. A well developed dramatic Soprano. But anyway: we would be very happy if Anita Rachvelishvili (also not a Mezzo but badly developed soprano) would have such good low notes today as Ghena does.
