It's been a L-O-N-G time coming (probably longer than you know) but I'm so happy to finally present part 1 of my arcade cabinet build! In case you haven't seen it, be sure to watch my older video all about setting up the Raspberry Pi (using RetroPie) and the controls. If you've got that system all up and running, putting it in something is the next step! I've been working on the plans for this system for a long time, rethinking them over and over to include all of the stuff I wanted my cabinet to have. This was especially important to me, since my wife gave me the OK for this to go in our living room. In my mind, that means that it HAD to be as practical as possible (even though it's completely impractical by nature.)
The biggest difference in my cabinet and the vintage cabinets, is the fact that the modern electronics can literally fit in your pocket, so the majority of the cabinet is empty. I wanted to take advantage of that with my design...
I decided to keep all of the electronics in/around the controls and monitor. This left the area below the controls, and behind the monitor open, so I made them into storage. Underneath the controls is a simple bookshelf with two doors. Behind the monitor was harder to get to, so I designed the cabinet so that one side panel could actually swing open, revealing six drawers, each 24" deep. Being able to swing open the side panel COMPLETELY changed the structure, in comparison to most cabinets, but I totally think it was worthwhile.

I get what you're saying but in all honesty, you can build a cabinet basically just like this with a simple saw and probably a sander. It doesn't have to be quite as "complicated "as this may seem.
You're just cutting and nailing a few wooden boards together. Sure, some of the tools he used may make things slightly easier, but very nothing that couldn't be done with very simple /basic tools just about anyone would have in the garage.
Don't let some of the "fancy" tools intimidate you. Woodworking is a very simple and ancient thing that's been done for thousands of years, LITERALLY... lol

This is awesome. After seeing your shop tour, I really appreciate how you make use of the space you have, and use tools that most people have or can purchase - i.e. all the cuts with your circular saw. Really challenges me to stop complaining that I don't have the right tools.

I watched this video years ago but recently become enthralled with arcade stuff and wanting to build my own arcade cabinet. Looking through a bunch of videos recently on how to build cabinets and stuff like that..... with all those extra shelves you put in you should be ashamed of yourself 😅🤣... but I understand the utility of it. I'm also in the process of coming up with an "ultimate design" for a 4 player setup And not gonna lie it is super f****** difficult 😅. I will say this though, this video put it in my mind 5 years ago that I could build my own arcade cabinet! And people reading this comment (watching this vid) you can do it too!... Take your time and come up with your own design, research the ins and outs and you will have something bad-ass.
And to @I Like To Make Stuff ... thank you brotha, for showing me years ago that I could do this... I am right around the corner! Thanks again man.

    -CAPCOM Vs Snk 2
    -Street fighter 3rd strike

    -Metal Slug 3
    -Mortal Kombat 3
    -Tekken 3

    Vinyl Cutter
A space big enough to store all this stuff
    Some adjustment needed*

    • @seigeengine
      @seigeengine Před 8 lety +3

+Andrew Brinkhaus I don't recall seeing him most of the time to know whether or not he wears one at all, but it's worth noting that these dangers are serious primarily for people who work with these materials and so inhale these particulates consistently on a daily basis over years. I wouldn't want to inhale it anyway, but people far too often exaggerate safety concerns based on occupational safety standards that assume far worse exposure than even people like Bob would handle.

Awesome, awesome, awesome! The bezel just makes the thing, for sure. (And the locking mechanism is ingenious...) A suggestion I'd offer for spray adhesive templates, there's a product I use for my painting masks called "Easy Tack", it's essentially masking tape adhesive in a can, and it can alleviate some of those cleanup hassles. There's several different brands that sell it as "stencil spray", but "Easy Tack" is the one I use in my Art frequently, and I've had great results. It takes a little getting the feel of for optimum performance, though...
