The best hard rock band I have heard in my 56 years on this planet. They don't stick to any one genre and often mix them even in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive 10 year back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting punk-prog to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. They are also five of the nicest people in music, without a shred of ego. They are funny and fun and bad-ass musicians to boot.

I recommend FromNowOn, Onset live, Bloomig etc.

Kanami Tohno is the lead guitarist and main composer of BAND-MAID.
She is a rock genius who combines a wide variety of genres. If you listen to a few songs, you'll understand that BAND-MAID's genre is BAND-MAID.

Band-Maid is not easy to describe. Saying that they play hard rock and wear maid costumes doesn't in any way even partly describe what they do. After touring and recording for over ten years together, without any changes in members, Band-Maid does what they do, THEIR WAY. They compose, arrange, and produce their music pretty much on their own, as a close knit team. They conscientiously try not to be like anyone else. No two Band-Maid songs sound alike and they currently have around 140 songs in their catalog. Their lead guitarist does most of the composition, followed by their bassist and drummer. They compose as a team and share songwriting credit. The rhythm guitar/vocalist/founder writes the majority of their lyrics, and their lead vocalist writes lyrics too. They play hard and fast, soft and slow, they do punk, prog, jazz, funk, metal, classic rock, they do love songs, hate songs, motivational songs, happy songs, sad songs, bouncy songs, anime themes, and whatever crazy thing they feel like doing. This is one of the few bands that can rewrite one of their furious hard rockers into a sensitive acoustic ballad. Their instrumental arrangements often stand on their own with the vocal tracks removed. And they do amazing instrumentals: try "From Now On". They are brilliant live performers. My current favorite video is their latest version of their song, "Puzzle" from their 2023 Tokyo Garden Theater concert.
My advice to anyone is to visit Band-Maid's CZcams channel and listen to five random songs. You will not be disappointed.

There's a ton of humour with Band Maid when they are live with an audience. Not in the lyrics but in their performance, this band not only enjoys performing live with an audience but they show it. Lyrically , Miku's lyrics are aften nuanced, poetic and philisophical but she will also throw in some fun vocal motifs into the songs as well ( Miku is the second vocalist by the way). The first song Manners is essentially about their career, past, present and future and only really understood if you've been with them a while and know at least a bit of their history. Blackhole is what it says on the tin, what it would be like being drawn into a Blackhole.

And a thing about the maid outfits, Bryan: as Fans and Maidiacs know, Miku -- the 2nd guitarist, lyricist, founder and who worked at a maid cafe -- wanted to show that everyday working "Kawaii" girls dressed as maids in high heels while having fun and smiling could rock as hard as any guy band sweating it up in their hip, poor tortured artists "outfits"... and by showing that contrast (the Gap), it would generate interest, which it so successfully has done! It also represents Woman Power (Equality), which is an important theme with the Maids.
Now they show up as Maids for all band business and interviews, etc. and have created a long-lasting, unmistakable, visual band brand. Very cleaver, Miku. Your diabolical plan for world domination is working, Po! Of course, none of this would work if their music and stage performance wasn't at such a remarkably high level. Band-Maid is considered by many of their fans and Maidiacs to be the best hard rock band in the world - maid outfits and all!

BAND-MAID was my introduction to the Japanese rock and metal scene. My father passed away right before the pandemic hit, so I was distracting myself with music and felt that my music collection needed an injection of a new sound. I was watching Nightwish videos and suddenly BAND-MAID started appearing in my recommendations more and more. I gave them a chance and was astounded by their creativity and energy, plus I fell in love with the bass player's tone immediately (I switched my cab and amp from Fender to Orange because of her). BAND-MAID led me to other great Japanese groups like LOVEBITES, Unlucky Morpheus, and Wagakki Band. From there it was like a trip around the globe; I've found great music from a lot of countries now, and it's mainly thanks to BAND-MAID for making that good first impression and making me realize that there's a whole world of great music out there.
BAND-MAID's origin story starts with rhythm guitarist Miku Kobato. She had worked in a couple of maid cafés in Japan and then was in a pop trio called Lil Cumin. Lil Cumin used the maid image toward the end of their brief existence. After a year of not really going anywhere, she left the group and went to the band's management saying that she wanted to put together a group with the maid image but a harder sound. Management gave her the green light but tasked her with the job of putting the group together. She first found guitarist Kanami "Mincho" Tono on CZcams and got her to join. Kanami knew drummer Akane Hirose and Akane knew bass guitarist MISA. They realized that Miku's voice wasn't quite strong enough to front a hard rock band, so they auditioned vocalist Saiki Atsumi and got her to join. They've never had a lineup change and aren't shy about showing their sense of humor live. They use the maid image much like LOVEBITES uses the white dresses; it's to create a gap between what you're seeing and what you're hearing.
I know I've typed a lot, but here's a few bits of info. Miku Kobato is a stage name; she went by Mika Noguchi before BAND-MAID was formed, but it's not known if that's another stage name or not. She didn't know how to play guitar when she put the band together; if you watch their first video, "Thrill," she essentially dances around her Rickenbacker guitar that she bought because it "was pretty." Under Kanami's tutelage, Miku has since worked hard to become a rock-solid rhythm guitarist and has her own signature guitar, the Zemaitis "Flappy Pigeon." Also, the kanji for "Kobato" can be translated as "small pigeon," so if you see her being referred to as a pigeon, that's why. It's also why, in interviews, she says "po" a lot. It's supposed to be like the sound a pigeon makes.

The MAIDS are all about 30yo. Rhythm guitarist KOBATO (Tiny Pigeon) was a J-Pop singer who was inspired by her experience as a waitress in a maid cafe to form a band that would wear cute maid outfits while playing “cool music”. With support from her label, she used the Internet to recruit like minded musicians, and she eventually realized the need to add a more powerful singer (SAIKI), and crafted the band around a “twin-vocal concept.” Progress was slow and they were about to give up, when THRILL went viral on Facebook. They performed at anime festivals and toured through the US and Europe, gaining popularity, until Covid shut everything down. CZcams propelled their career forward, with more than 5,000 reaction videos following their new releases and excerpts from streaming concerts. After things returned to normal, they created a music video about their experience. Look for UNLEASH. They have toured America many times, including appearances at many large festivals. They will play at LOLLAPALOOZA this summer.

"Maid cafes" are popular in Japan (and as another poster said there's nothing particularly risque about them). The band was started by Miku (back up vocals, rhythm guitar) who was working at a maid cafe at the time. Their concept is "the gap," which is the difference between what you see (cute Japanese maids) and what you get (who play serious hard rock). That's about it as far as the maid outfits, it's a gimmick but the band members are all very talented and they have a very large library of songs.

  • @uffdad8211
    @uffdad8211 Pƙed rokem +13

The first song describes the manner of the approach or method that Band-Maid utilizes in writing their music, thus the title "Manners." Lyrics such as " Groove, Beginning, Difficult, Progress, and Courage" are perhaps relevant to music teachers reminding their students of the work necessary to succeed as musicians. There is poetry and much meaning in the lyrics Of Band-Maid's songs written by the band's founder and rhythm guitarist, Miku Kobato. The multitalented Miku originally worked in Japanese Maid Cafes and came up with the idea of a rock band which incorporated the maid image, hence the band of maids concept, now known internationally as Band-Maid.

Just so you know, there are no risque connotations associated by the fans with Band-Maid's uniforms or actions, at least amongst normal people. I have been watching them for 7 years and recently saw 3 Band-Maid live shows as they make their way through their 10th anniversary tour, and nearly all of the fans I have encountered online or at shows have nothing but admiration and total respect for these ladies. On rare occasions, I see a new reactor who is steeped in material that fetishizes maids (or nurses, or stewardesses, take your pick) and can't get past it. Are you one of those?

Thanks for reacting to Band Maid. They are more in the Hard Rock genre although they do have a lot of Metal and Punk influences. I agree with the From Now On recommendation particularly from a lead guitar and drums standpoint. Bass overall isn't as crazy technical as she will get in other songs. One thing with Band Maid is they don't show off just to show off....it has to fit in the context of the song. Even an instrumental song like FNO one could easily imagine vocals over it although Kanami's guitar essentially plays the lead vocal melody.
Influencer has a really nice bass solo and guitar solo.
Different might be their most chaotic song (along with Black Hole) with a very unusual lead riff. MV is better than their live.

Stylistically they're all over the place. They have a crazy variety of genres they can play in, so it takes about 10 songs before you start to really "know" their sound. I'd say that the most technical "song" is Giovanni, although perhaps not necessarily the guitar. The lead guitarist is also the songwriter, and she doesn't write long solos for herself normally. Her magical skill is crazy good songwriting. If I had to pick one song for you to do next, I'd pick Puzzle Official Live from their channel, although if you want to go fishing, find the Zepp Tokyo Live version of Don't You Tell ME, with a bass guitar/lead guitar "battle."
I like her guitar solo in Blooming a lot, and that's also a great song - check out the Blooming MV. For something harder and crazier go with Rinne MV. To see what they sounded like many years ago (they are in year 10 - no personnel changes) ago, listen to the Real Existence Live Official MV. Also highly recommend Domination Live to see all of the shine, and last but not least the beautiful power ballad with a great guitar solo, Daydreaming. (go for the MV with that one). So - all of that notwithstanding, you can pick any of their songs at random and come up with a winner. The acoustic version of Catharsis is also great from their all acoustic Christmas concert in 2021. They are quite often very uplifting also, both in terms of music and lyrics. They are not a metal band - they are a hard rock band that veers in and out of other genres. Lastly, their concerts are very fun, with lots of audience interaction. Not a band where people stand around with a blank expression on their face. Oh - and I second Ron's suggestion of From Now On for a technically impressive instrumental.

Check out From Now On. It clearly shows the lead guitar's approach to music. She's also the group's main songwriter and everything she plays is integral to the song, even her solos sound like transitions or different verses rather than a departure from the song itself. The rhythm guitar player/second vocal writes the lyrics. She's a weird mix of serious and absurd. To really appreciate the lyrics, you have to understand a woman's situation in east Asia, something a couple of old white guys like you and me have to open our minds to. I've come to believe they're brilliant. Both of them have a long future as songwriters. As far as technical goes, Black Hole is deeply technical as an ensemble piece. The chaotic arrangement of the parts is insane including the vocals. Not a lot of groups that pull that off live. I saw them do it in Austin a few weeks ago. 24 songs of crazy arrangements and they pulled them all off.

Recommendations for technical exploring with the Maids?
Craziest one is “Giovanni,” get the instrumental (sans vocals) “White Room” version. I’m still trying to get a grip on that one
“From Now On,” official music video. Another instrumental, more heavy metal, dramatic drops, bass feature, guitar takes the role of vocals, a creative arrangement
“Blooming,” official music video. Probably my favorite for dynamic shifts, layering arrangement, and just a beautifully executed composition
Band-Maid is, at heart, a happy group of skilled musicians that take their musical work seriously, but not themselves. They love their fans and they are genuinely friends off-stage.
If you’re into angry, downtuned 8-strings, skulls, leather and blood? This isn’t your band. But the bands that do all that? They love the Maids, too. ✌

Okay, names, pronunciation, nicknames, and roles, in order that they joined the band.
Miku Kobato - mee-koo - Kuruppo, the Little Pigeon, the Little Engine Who Will - band founder, backing (and occasionally lead) vocals, rhythm guitar, principal lyricist, tireless Spokespigeon and PR machine. Wielder of weapons grade cuteness. So determined to see her band succeed that she fired herself as lead singer (she decided her voice wasn't strong enough for hard rock), then went looking for a replacement. Learned to play guitar after the band was formed.
Kanami Tono - kah-nah-mee - Kanamincho or just Mincho - lead guitar, keyboards, principal composer and arranger. On stage, she's a savant mad riffer with a room temperature IQ and a huge crush on Saiki. In reality, she's a genius, and not just musically- she has a degree in economics with honors from Tokyo University.
Akane Hirose - ah-kah-neh - A-chan, the Gorilla - drums, sequencing, snacks, the leader the band doesn't have. What you see is what you get- a cheerful jock with a huge appetite who burns off the calories murdering her drums. Frequently snacks between songs.
MISA - mee-sah - the Barefoot Assassin, MISA MISA MISA! - bass, booze, occasional wet work. Usually stone faced. Barely acknowledges the audience's existence. Always has a beer or a bottle of Jim Beam on her Orange amp. Originally, these were ways of coping with stage fright. These days, that's just how the assassin rolls.
Saiki Atsumi - sah-ee-kee (but Psyche is close enough) - the Ice Queen, Sensei, Sai-chan - lead vocals, some lyrics, the "We're done" girl. Fashionista and train nerd. In total command on stage; hides behind Miku off stage (she's actually kind of shy).

Band-Maid considers themselves a Hard Rock band so if you expect Metal you may be disappointed. They do dabble in metal a bit with a few songs (Rhine, and Black Hole are probably their hardest but Screaming and maybe From Now On (an instrumental) are worth checking out too. If you want to see what they do best I'd recommend Domination (live), Dice, and Warning. You can't really go wrong with any of their songs if you want Hard Rock. I believe (and I'm not alone) that they are the best Hard Rock band performing today.

I assure you this is a band right up your alley re: humor. Influencer is a commentary on tiktok culture. I think the Afterlife video is about workplace frustrations and the maid actresses trash their break room. Plenty of laughs in the Dont you tell ME video. Great to see demure maids tun on the rich diners and flip the banquet table. In concert they clown around a lot. In a couple of their live videos they surround the drummer and play hengao ~ the Japanese activity of making funny faces to make others crack up. Akane Hirose the drummer is not to be influenced to flub up and actually gives it right back without missing a beat.

The Maid outfits are the consept of Miku- Second vocals/guitar, as she worked in a maid cafe in tokyo and wanted to contrast the look with hard rock, which is the generally accepted genre. You won't be surprised to find out how many metal heads have become fans of the band purely because of their musicianship and the mix of metal with rock in many of the songs. Strangely they often become the most obsessed with the band.

Lots of good Band Maid suggestions here so I won't reiterate any of them. But if you want a bit more of the technical side of Japanese rock/metal, I heartily suggest a couple of trios - Asterism and Sokoninaru. The former is primarily instrumental (most recent ep has vocals). I don't believe you'll be disappointed.

Cool. Ultimately my guess is BandMaid is not what you gravitate to, all good. Don’t really know what to suggest. I like Moratorium (is the breakdown Iommi or Dimebag?), and Clang. Their live vids are almost always the way to go, esp officials from 2017 til 2020, or brand new (whereas this was from an audience-less Covid online show). Songs like Dice (guns n roses, whom they’ve opened for), Freedom, & Domination (crowd interactions, everyone solos
)
Or instrumentals: Onset live, or From Now On (official music video).
Herman Li has actually done a reaction to From Now On (and of course took Lovebites on UK tour, complete with two band jams
). But here is the short edit (7mins instead of 17) of Herman having BandMaids guitarists Zoom into his podcast, this is the section where he “auditions” with them, he’s clearly a fan. The lead player Kanami is really good, but just not quite classic-metal guitar-hero flashy. But watching Herman improv while she plays the written lead melody gave me renewed appreciation for what she does do. And the rhythm section (tho not appearing in Herman’s vid) just. plain. Rocks.

Could tell from your complete lack of any facial reaction whatsoever (apart from a couple of seconds when I saw an eyebrow raise) that they didn't impress you much. "They're good" doesn't really break down Kanami's mix of octave drops, trem picking, chromatics or the many other techniques she employs in her songwriting and playing but those outfits were clearly your main concern. The founder of the band, Miku on rhythm, deliberately incorporated the outfits as what she calls The Gap - Hard Rock being played by women in dresses - because she knew that it would cause cognitive dissonance. Personally, as I've been going to gigs since 1975, I was already used to seeing a guitarist dressed like a schoolboy, a whole band wearing children's animal face paints and many other gimmicks (from ZZ Top's beards to Ozzy's rubber bat and Alice's guillotine) so could concentrate instead on the superb and complex playing from all band members instead, especially in that 220 BPM ending to Black Hole. Maybe you were expecting a Metal band? They're primarily a Hard Rock band and the only band I've seen for decades that is playing live like bands I went to see in the 70's and 80's, such as Led Zeppelin, Queen, Sabbath, Floyd or Zappa. Music they write themselves, real guitars, drums and bass played loudly and with passion as well as powerful Rock vocals. They've revived the classic Rock sound and given the genre a much needed kick in the ass. Jimmy Page saw them live and went backstage to ask the drummer for a selfie as he was so impressed. Tony Visconti went to see them last year and took along his 12-string Zemaitis for Miku and Kanami to have a go on and then tweeted after their show that they were "one of the best Rock bands I've ever seen". THE best Rock band in existence.

Band Maid was started in 2013 by Miku Kobato. At the time she had just left the Idol Group, Lil Cumin and she didn't like the type of music she had been performing. She approached her management agency with the idea of making an actual band playing rock music but dressed as maids. She had worked in a Maid Cafe and thought the image of maids playing rockin music would create what she called "The Gap" between what you see and what you hear. The Management company was like Ok, go ahead.
Miku then looked around and found Kanami a singer/songwriter who was posting her own videos on the internet. Miku had her agency contact her and Kanami thought the idea was cool and agreed to join. Miku then asked if Kanami knew a drummer who might be interested. Kanami had worked with Akane in the past and there is 2 versions of this, the first is, Kanami literally walked over to Akane's apartment and asked her, the second is Kanami called Akane and asked her. (Akane has said in 2 different interviews that 1: Kanami called her and asked if she could come over and 2: in a second interview Kanami just came over) Akane was actually hesitant as she had worked in an "All Girl Group" before and didn't enjoy it as it wasn't the type of music she wanted to play. After hearing a Demo, Akane was like ok, but was still slightly hesitant because of the "Maid Outfits", but she agreed to give it a try. Akane was asked if she knew a bass player and she had gone to Tokyo School of Music with MISA and had worked a couple of jobs with her. So Misa was contacted and after she heard a demo she was like I like the music, but she also was hesitant about the "Maid Outfits", but she relented and joined in as she really wanted to play the kind of music she heard in the demo. The 3 of them then "Auditioned" for the record company and passed the audition.
Now we have the "Core" members. The 4 members worked out some songs provided for them by the record company, and a setlist and they had performed 3 times with just Miku on main vocals. Miku after those performances felt that her voice wasn't powerful enough to really perform the songs she wanted. So she approached her management company again and asked if they had any singers who weren't in other projects. They then auditioned several singers. Miku heard Saiki rehearsing in a room across the hall and asked if she could be auditioned, the record company then had Saiki audition.
Saiki was signed to the same management company and had done some work as a backup singer and dancer and was asked if she would be interested in auditioning for this new group which currently had 4 members and she would be the fifth. She had been a member of a group with 8 other people as a backup singer and dancer, and HATED it. So she listened to the demo and thought "Cool" because she liked the music.
Now we come to the tricky part. Miku KNEW that if Saiki was told about the "Maid Outfits" she would say NO WAY!, so they didn't tell her. They told her they would have "Cool/cute Clothes"(I've read it translated either way), and she never met Miku until a few days before they had a contracted performance. She wasn't told about the "Maid Outfits" until the day before the performance, and she had considered backing out, but she had signed the contract. (Saiki also had NEVER met Miku until then as well)
So the Ladies, went and did the performance and Saiki really, REALLY liked the crowds reaction and the music they were performing. She DIDN'T like the apron she wore so it got ditched after the first performance.
And you now have the beginnings of the BEST LIVE HARD ROCK BAND in the WORLD!
    ALL HAIL BAND MAID!!!!!
Now that we have the Full band, it was felt that there needed to be a second guitar. Saiki was like, "Not Me, No Way." So Miku said, "I'll do it.", at first that was literally all she did, was hold the guitar and mime playing it, until Akane said, if you are going to hold it, you NEED to learn to play it. And Miku said, "Ok.", and Kanami started to teach Miku how to play. The Ladies released their first album in 2014 "Maid in Japan" which failed to chart, but later after "Thrill" it was reissued and charted to #26 in Japan.

Then in 2015 they released "New Beginning"
On New Beginning was the song that changed Band Maid's entire existence. "Thrill"...
The band was getting ready to release their first music video and the choice was between "Love, Passion, Matador" and "Thrill" and the ladies chose Thrill. (Little known fact, Miku helped with the lyrics on Thrill but did not get credited)
This became the seminal moment of Band Maid. Because their second album charted at #64, the record company was seriously considering disbanding the Ladies and switching them to other projects. (In fact they had Kanami and Akane work with Mochi to Cheese thinking that when Band Maid cratered they could use them in another band. MISA had also just started working with Mochi to Cheese as well). However about 6 months after the video's release, a Facebook page "JRock Radio" posted the video to their timeline. And the video went viral. Having over a million views in just a few short weeks. The Ladies Twitter page got so many hits they thought their page had been hacked. Their CZcams channel also started getting more and more subscribers and views to Thrill.
Now the ladies knew where their fans wanted them to go. Harder Rock, less pop. And history was Maid.

Band-Maid is not power metal in any way. They are a rock-core band who blend many genres including punk, pop, jazz, blues, funk, folk, hip-hop?with occasional reggae-ish beat. Sometimes those elements are fused so seemlessly that you would easily miss it.
Technicality for them is just a way to experiment and explore new sound.
Band-Maid is not everyone's cup of tea. Their diverse music suits people with eclectic musical taste.
Every one of the members have their unique creative sound / style. You just know that it's Band-Maid as soon as the intro kicks in. Not many bands have that.
Kanami's guitar part is, though not super-duper technical, can be deceptively hard to nail because of the tricky rhythm she adopts in her composition.
Try H-G-K, Giovanni instrumental only version if you want to see more of Kanami's guitar work.

A review for a new Italian restaurant: "Yeah, don't get me wrong, the food was good but there were _a lot_ of noodles... and no BBQ." A review of the old favorite Mexican restaurant: "Not much choice for entrees - there was one _sort of_ BBQ on the menu but what was with the green chili sauce?" It was shtick of course, and the letters to the editor were even funnier than the reviews.

Fun thing about Band Maid, is that the rithmic guitar: Kobato, the one with pigtails starts the band without knowing how to play the guitar. She was teach by the lead guitar: Kanami. She is the one who composes a lot of their songs.
They have a lot of good songs, but the one who is really great from the guitar perspective can be "Take me Higher"
Sadly is really difficult to find any good video of this song live. I found one with not really good image quality and again sadly with a guy speaking before.
