Gary Payton on Jordan, Kobe, Shaq, LeBron, 2 Sons Named Gary, Winning Finals, HOF (Full Interview)

- In this full-length interview, Gary Payton starts the conversation off by talking about what life was like growing up in the projects of West Oakland during the crack epidemic and the hard-nosed approach that his father used to toughen him up and discipline him from his adolescence throughout his stint as a standout college basketball player at Oregon State. In a full-circle moment of the discussion, Gary Payton later detailed the parenting tactics that he used once he became the father of four.
As the conversation continues, the legendary hooper talks about the events leading up to him being drafted by the Seattle Supersonics, his regular-season debut against Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls, his development as a franchise player alongside Shawn Kemp, and the long-lasting effect that George Karl had on each of them as a head coach. While the trio enjoyed success in a highly competitive Western Conference during the early-mid 90s, their stint together was not completely unblemished. According to Gary Payton, his verbal altercation with teammate Ricky Pierce nearly ended with gun violence in the Supersonics locker room. But luckily for everyone involved, cooler heads prevailed.
The former "Defensive Player of the Year" recalls the time when his cousin gave him the nickname "The Glove," his epic showdown against Michael Jordan during the NBA Finals (1996), and the way in his defensive strategy against the league's all-time scoring average leader worked. The Hall of Famer later talks about his other NBA finals appearances against the Pistons (2004) and Mavericks (2006). Lastly, Gary Payton weighs in on the MJ vs LBJ debate, Scottie Pippen's legacy as an all-around basketball player, Kobe Bryant's death, and LeBron's current stint with the Los Angeles Lakers. - Zábava
So happy he won a championship 🏆... No matter what team he won it with he one those great dudes that deserve it
And let's not forget he hit a HUGE shot In game 5 of that series as well !
Gary A Legend
Only missed 25 games his entire career salute
That's a lot.

I've actually never seen many interviews with Gary Payton before. I've always known him as great player, but I also dig him as a person after watching this. He didn't dodge any questions here. He answered everything point blank and honestly, even the more uncomofrtable ones about the mistakes he made. Mad respect for him. I hope he's happy and healthy and achieves everything he's got planned right now.
He grew up in Compton.
Hell naw he from the bay bruh.... OAKLAND Smokin Watch ya mouth brotha ain't no Compton
One of the greatest Vlad interviews of all time.
Gary Payton has a great story!
It is.
One of the best Vlad interviews I've seen. Gary Payton have that no nonsense attitude. He was raised in survival mode type of mentality, Reminds me of alot of how we were raised in NYC in my younger days. Salute OG GP
Gary Payton is one of my favorite basketball players of all-time. He deserves all the praise. Glad he made the NBA Top 75.

This interview was beautifully orchestrated. Informative, entertaining and enlightening. Very much enjoyed .
the importance of a solid father figure involved in the family, love how gary always makes that a key point in his interviews.....without his dad, we probably never even know gary exists
Father's Mold The Children
My memory of Gary Payton growing up in Oakland, my Jr High School played against his Dad All-Star team at Heavencourt Jr. High, Gary was in the 5th grade rockin Jheri Curl balling his azz off lol even then everyone in knew Gary was going to go pro. Congratulations on everything GP. Town Bizz!💪🏿
Gary Payton is a fierce competitor with a big heart. He's earned everything in life. Great interview with one of all the greats.
Rip Father Payton. You raised a legend and a solid individual all around. I rock with GP💯💯💯

In 1996 I saw him at Toys are us, he had a boy on his arm. He said hi to me with a high five.
I never tough he will even look at me. Very humble guy…
Absolutely one of the most real dudes that I've seen in any major sport or in the entertainment business! Dude is just extremely honest with everyone and will tell it how he sees it but most of all he's honest with himself knowing that he has made mistakes just like everyone does in life! Lastly I believe that he has given his all in everything he does, never taking short cuts but always has stayed very humble and very grateful for everything he has in life! Some may mistake his confidence for cockiness do to him being the ultimate competitor but he's never had a ego or felt that he was better then anyone else!
I was 7 rows back from the floor at a Rockets Vs Heat game in Houston…. Now I’m a transplant from San Antonio (go Spurs) and I said something like ‘dude Tmac is roasting y’all!’. And when I tell you GP looked me in my eyes, talked to me off and on the rest of the game, went up 16 QUIK! Even the fans were getting on me for waking 35 year old GP up. He locked everyone down and they won. I will say that as always seemed like, Yao Ming was hurt, but they won. He finds me after the final horn and said ‘I still feel like playing, you want some big fella?’ He had 1 steal and 12 points, but affected that game soooooo much. Tmac had 37…. It was January something, check the records….TRUESTORY! Heat win 101-95… Dwade and Shaq had 56 combined….. this man is legend. Didn’t even start but played more minutes than the starter…. My bad Houston…. Didn’t really care tho, I’m a Spurs fan! 5 rings!
I loved Gary Payton as a player. I love this interview. He’s a good guy.
I remember when G.P. came out of OSU......... He's always been a straight guy.... We are the same age..... Class of '85....... And he is right, No Cal didnt get the respect back then...... If so, there is no doubt he would have been a Mickey D's All American....... You gotta think the year we came out of high school, Chicago was loaded and Big Ben had already been killed!!! Nick Anderson, R. Kelly were all at Simeon... Gary was nice for true.......

I think his father saved him from getting in to trouble
GP.Yaaaaa! Couldn't wait for this one! Thank you both so much for sharing! GP such a classy guy!!
Gary one of the greatest of all time this guy a legend for real
Average great at best. Not elite. Wouldn't put off cutting the grass to watch him play, for real. MJ, AI, Mamba, kyrie, Ja Morant? Worth stopping everything, even playing for my favorite artists
Agreed. Glad I was able to go to those Sonics games In the 90s. They were affordable.
I couldn’t wait for this one to come out in full! Thanks vlad!! You need to keep interviewing NBA players especially the top 75 legends! Paul pierce and KG come to mind
As a Celtics fan id love to see vlad interview them 2
What makes you think the top 75 legends would all wanna be interviewed by Vlad of all ppl?

Great interview guy's !
Growing up in the 90's
Watching Gary and Shawn Kemp is a dual that couldn't be stop. Especially on the pick and roll. I used play 🏀 myself and me too was a defensive first player. Playing defense for me lead me playing lots of minutes. It was frustrating at times because my teammates wouldn't play defense in crucial times that lead us to losing the game. So it felt I did all that work for nothing wasting all the energy, but when you get a group of guys that loves playing defense it's a great thing. 💯
Gary Payton totally made the best era of the Seattle Sonics.
I'm glad July 23,1968 happened Gary Payton arrival,I admire his mental toughness also stronger than he looked, great both offense and defense. My favorite player and along with Shawn Kemp my favorite duo.
Love this , GP is such a great story teller of his time . ✅💯
Nobody in baseball is called "The Glove"!
Gary shut all that down.......Let that sink in!👌💯
Because baseball players want offensive names
Awesome, awesome interview! Payton was a beast on the ball court. Thanks for having such an honest and humble opinion when it comes to saying who’s the greatest because there were so many, I just wish they stop with all the comparisons! Me, my Husband, and daughter are huge, huge Golden State Warriors fans and your Son is such a great addition to the team! My prayer is that one day me and my Family can attend a Warriors game! Blessing to you and your Family always!❤️
GP is a Real one. One of the greatest! Salute 💯 great interview
Hey you gotta love this brother, he listened to his dad, who had his son's best interests at hand, and that's why he was successful, kudos to Mr.Mean.
Thank you Gary! You used to make me go play as a kid. I'd watch my supersonic and go ball. It was the best time in basketball history.
The only other interview I ever heard that can rival a Gary Payton interview for complete honesty, no bullshit, raw emotion, facts, accountability and holding accountable, insight, tell a story, entertainment...was Evil Kniviel with Jim Rome(radio program). Gary is about telling you what you need to hear...rather than what you want to hear...and I love how he articulates it in almost a tribute retrospect show of Love to his Father. Find a Gary interview where he talks about John Stockton...its incredible the amount of Respect he gives to John Stockton saying Stockton always got the better of him... Gary Payton was the G.O.A.T trashtalker..but beneath that he had incredible Respect for the game, incredible respect for his opponents (its the best league in the World) and commanded incredible respect...because he was Gary Payton !
My favorite point guard of All time! Thank you for your great interview.
I played ball against Gary's father. Great man and tough coach! His teams were always ready to bring it. Much respect to the Glove, Cali, and his legendary legacy!
Gary Payton is probably my favorite basketball player to listen to. He is so descriptive. What a great player and person💯🔥
I never thought I'd say this but John Stockton prob one of the more underated (not talkd about) players in NBA history. One of ur best interviews ever v. Nice slice

1996 NBA Finals will remain my all time favorite NBA Finals 64-18 Seattle Supersonics vs 72-10 Chicago Bulls. I was happy Seattle made it all the way to the NBA Finals after two 1st round disappointments. Sonics were the only team to win more than one game from the Bulls in playoffs. After trailing 3-0 was glad they won games 4 and 5 before it eventually ended. Seattle a very good team in their own right. Shawn Kemp and Gary Payton along with Detlef Schrempf, Sam Perkins, Hersey Hawkins,Nate McMillian and etc. Their intro at home games were awesome too.
Mann you must be from Seattle to remember all that.. I know cuz I am! Those were the days! The Sonics intro was everything 🔥🔥🔥
Re you
I saw Seattle best the Bulls twice that year, once in the regular season an game four in the Finals. They were great that season an Gary was my favorite.
Hopefully we get the Sonics back when the league expands in 2025.
I grew up in Miami but had huge respect for the Sonics. Loved that team, the unis , and hope yall get a team back.
Gary held MJ to his worst statistical scoring output in a finals series. That doesn’t get talked about enough.
That’s a beautiful thing hearing GP talk about his Dad. It was a different time for sure… my Dad was a lot like that too but I grew up in the 90’s watching Payton and Kemp at the Sonics
He never disappoint his fans with great basketball
Mr Payton class act ...good interview Mr Vlad 🤝🙏🏾

Gary Payton has alot of polish and maturity and so I'm glade I got to see this interview, Good stuff Vlad✌️✌️✌️
Gary Payton aka The Glove is one of the realist humans I've ever been around. Always down to earth, welcoming and willing to share a good story, laugh and still talk sh💩 lol Alhamdulilah.
I don't usually like watching Vlad's interview on athletes because he doesn't seem to have a lot of background knowledge of them. But with Gary you can definitely tell growing up in Oakland he was a big fan of his. He actually asked very good in-depth questions. Very good interview.
GP!!! been waiting for this one! Vlad done put out 47 cut up clips making us wait for the full version 🤣
Great interview. Gary Payton was the quintessential point guard. He put the ball in the hole, got his teammates involved and played 'D' like his life depended on it>>>> A real mistro
I could already tell how excited vlad was when the interview started. This gonna be a good one!
Thanks for this interview. Great ambassador of the sport.
Oakland legend right there. Much love to Gary, Payton and coach mean
Scottie was legit. Only people who don’t know basketball or who want to pretend that MJ won by himself hate on or downplay Scottie.
Soo much respect for GP

This man played the game and after watching 👀 rubbish video he still has my respect and is a pleasure watching him play as well as the interview. You did great with raising your son and I like watching 👀 him because of you.

I admire GP game and trash talk as a athlete you gotta love it and love his passion
The Glove, one of my favorites player ever. Hello from Dominican Republic!
Bill Russell's family moved to Oakland when he was 8 years old and prepped at McClymonds HS in Oakland. After playing at Mack, he matriculated to University of San Francisco. He is the most accomplished champion in the NBA. The Finals MVP is named after him. Don't disrespect the Bay Area History like that saying it started with Gary Payton. It started way before that. And I love Gary Payton. Just don't revise history. And KC Jones who you discussed getting fired and winning those titles as player and a Coach moved to San Francisco when he was 9 and attended the now defunct Commerce HS in San Francisco. Went on the University of San Francisco with Bill Russell. Come on guys you have to do better. Real hoop pioneers come from the Bay Area and I am a LA native, and love my section, but give credit where credit is due.
Oh we got to give up for the godfather:Bill Russell! That's 100
Give it up
