I ended up in Thailand in 1996 as 1) I met my future wife. 2) I had the funds for all the start up costs or 'buy' home and car. 3) able to start up a business with my life partner. 4) the weather is good. 5) here in Phuket the scenery is spectacular. 6) I feel safe from crime. 7) the culture is amazing. 8) I am welcomed by my extended Thai family ...
I'm living in The Philippines right now, but I was living Thailand before for a long time. The different is The Philippines people lives poorly due to variety of reasons and they don't have Universal health care, so every pill here cost money and people earn just barely enough to survive. Thailand has universal heath care and that helps the people a lot. Also, Thailand is net exporter of food.,., They grow more than they eat, so food stuff is cheaper than The Philippines where they even imports rice for the past 20 years. ( that's not good when everybody eats rice here). Thai people on average per GDP earns almost double than the Filipinos, so most Thais don't have to go abroad to work and send money home like the Filipinos.

My experience in Issan is it takes me back to a time in the western world where we had respect for our elders, along with authority, such as police, nurses, teachers etc etc. We in the west have totally gone in the wrong direction, building walls around our homes, where nobody knows their neighbours anymore. I pray that Thailand doesn't lose the gift it has in maintaining community values

It's been a long years since I went to Thailand 3 times with my parents before and after they divorce, I'm enjoying buying shirts, at night market dishes which are the fried insects and Thai local foods with fresh drinks popular are Coconut milk and coffee I'm enjoying while we're at Pattaya traveling around for how many days I forgotten. It's still letting me feel that Thailand is praising the Lord to make it more fashionable for their own landscapes which is the updating by the government information.
Hi, I use a Turkish barber here in the UK. £12 for an all over clipper cut(which i get) £16 for a styled cut You get hot towel, short shoulder massage, eyebrow trim and ear hair flaming included with these. £7 for a beard trim They are great value but not anywhere near as good as you get. 13 months now! The time is ticking away. I am sure you will love it. I am set to move within the next few months to a rural part of where my wife is from. While the visa runs are going to be a bit tedious, I think it will all be worth it. Have fun when you land in Thailand. I know I can't wait. Great video guys! Very informative. After travelling to Thailand, off and on, for the last 30 years. My rule of thumb is that everything in Thailand is half priced compared to Australia, where i live now. Except for Cars! I find them expensive in Thailand. As much as they are in Australia anyway. But property and food, and most main things you need in life are half price.

In California, barber prices have shot up! The cheaper places went from $12 to $20, while the fancier spots now charge a crazy $40 to $60 for a haircut and beard. And yep, they still expect a tip on top of that. It's wild how much things have changed in the barber scene here!

I am 62 now, So happy to have come to Thailand at the age of 19 years old lived in rural Thailand during the weekend swimming in the klongs and ponds near Rangsit (40 years ago the water quality was much better) worked in BKK for 3years , worked on refugee and migrants rights and counter trafficking with the Thai authorities for more than 10 years along the Thai/Myanmar border bottom line Thailand is the most easiest place to live as Ryan explains in many of his Vlog. We are in my view even “Spoiled” One simple advice live with Thai people as much as you can. Learn and speak Thai as quick as possible. I tend to feel sorry for so may expats living years in Thailand and unable to communicate or have a good laugh with Thai people. I see too many Farang having their girlfriend or wife as their only Thai counterparts and counting on their support for their daily life needs ! Most of them do not have genuine male friends make sure like you do like in the West to have Thai male buddies too have a sought of equilibrium you learn lot more through them believe me.
@pierrekingbkk great comment. It's so sad actually to see so many foreigners move to Thailand, then limit themselves to Bars and Tourist hubs, getting bored and drinking heavily. If my plans go as I hope, when I retire, my plan is to live with my Thai ladyfriend in her village immerse myself in the culture and live as much as possible and learn the language.
I've just started watching your videos & you & your wife are such a beautiful couple. I too have fallen in love with an Isaan girl I met in Phuket. You are 100% correct; they are the best girls in the world. So friendly, so affectionate, generous, humble, always smiling & also hard working & very family orientated. Covid was hard for us as she lost her job & I couldn't be with her but we got through it. She never asked me for a cent (but of course I did help her out in the end but that was my choice). I finally got to visit her at her family's farm in Chaiyaphum in 2022 & I fell in love with the place. This is the real Thailand with real Thai people. Her family was so awesome to me & the whole little village & all her neighbours treated me like I was family. I definitely will be moving there once I've sorted out my work situation. Thank you for all the tips & advice!

We started coming to Thailand 15 yrs ago fell in love with the country and people. We talked about moving there. With work family kept putting it off. Really regret that now. Wasted all those yrs. In ill health now at 70. What a waste
Although we're not living there currently :(. . Big one for me is just feeling more free from the bureaucracy and weight of having forms, fines, taxes, etc,etc of western countries (we live in Australia currently, want to move back to Thailand when possible.... . Although there are problems and corruption everywhere, the Thai leadership/government still seems much more in line with the Thai people. Western nations 'leadership' just wants to sell the people out as fast as they can, etc.

I've only lived in Bangkok less than a year now after 27 years in Poland and 20 in Australia, but apart from (or expanding on, really) what you mentioned here I also really enjoy how gender roles are quite "traditional" here, especially while the western world seems to be heading the opposite direction. A simple fact how 90% of all customer service is female, it just seems to work well for everyone. Also how present sport facilities, like football, basketball fields, parks, outdoor swimming pools are and how people across all ages are actively enjoying them. In some ways moving here feels like being taken back in time to growing up in communistic Poland in the '70s, in a good way. For example, in many places in the world putting together a group of 22 football players to enjoy community matches would be quite a challenge, not here.
Yea, I was thinking the same the other day. Wherever there is a true acceptance there is no need for "supporting", marches and waving flags and slogans, "raising awareness", manifesting "pride", mandating language, inclusiveness, diversity, none of that. In fact there is not even a need to think of the attitude as "acceptance". It's almost like you have to create the intolerance first to then stand against it. In a sense it's the majorities' delusion and a sense of superiority in the first place to think that the minorities even need their acceptance. Makes me think of a Chillian friend of mine who once said to me where he grew up there was not even a concept of racism, different ethnicities just grew up together not thinking about it. @@lifeinruralthailand

I agree, My wife is Isaan Lao and is the same as Damo. Shy, quiet, humble yet still radiant. Hard working, family centric and thoughtful. My wife Srisuda is also very cheeky and keeps her affections for private moments which makes those hugs and smiles just for me that much sweeter. Western women could learn a whole heap from Thai country girls.
Hi, almost fully agree. You need to get outside Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy to find the real Thailand. There is hardly any poverty in Thailand. There are lots of people who do not have very much but they are completely happy and are well supported by family and friends. Compare with western countries where there are lots of destitute people despite receiving free accommodation and other government handouts. My one point of disagreement:- Nakhon Ratchasima girls are the most beautiful.

Funny I came across this piece right after coming back from my nearest Thai town, Khampieng Phet, getting a great haircut 150bhat, a great massage , 100bhat,, some pretty decent sushi 15 Bhat each, good latte 45bht , some lovely bananas ,all within walking distance of my excellent dentist who was the reason I came into town this morning! Ryan like the way you guys do your thing. And yes there is a whole lot of smiles available!

I just had a thorough clean and polish of teeth. In Australia it would have cost me $500 ! Here it cost $50 ( approx tb1000 ) . I'm replacing two crowns too, costing. 24,000 baht. That's $1,000. Australian . In Australia they charge $2,500 each !!!! Dentistry in Australia is grossly and unethically over priced. The standard here in Thailand is exemplary .

Not surprised there is no one in those coffee shops, at those prices, you are getting close to what I charge here in Florida and at around $15/ hr wages here for basic help in that business you can see the issue there! Also, I would think this discrepancy could in the future create some social tensions.
I agree with you.. Isaan girls are the most beautiful and moreover, they have a kind spirit. Jai dee is their normal character, probably spelt incorrectly!
I also find even in the suburbs Bangkok that I am regularly the only one in a nice cafe. normally it's staffed by 4 or 5 young ladies, well fitted out interior but very few customers. I guess it only works if the wages/rents are so low compared to what they can charge for the few drinks they sell 🤷🏻♂️ which also seems to lead to a massive oversupply and duplication of things like coffee shops
@lifeinruralthailand In Adelaide, South Australia, I get a 'short back and sides' cut for AU$20, THB490 (until my hairdresser moves her business to a home shop next year, which is too far for me to travel. Most places, cuts for men cost AU$30+ The video of Damo with the Cow, was adorable. If Damo was my wife, a large photo of that scene would be hanging on my wall in the main room, never to be removed. Those Cows are so cute. So is Damo, but the way - you're so lucky Ryan?!
I think sight, sound (both from nature) taste and having a nice place all to just your family most of the time (I don't enjoy crowded places) would be great reasons to live in a certain place.

Hi Ryan,Demo,very interesting show today about the many good reasons etc to live in Thailand.Here in Christchurch,NZ I pay $22 for a no frills haircut,walk in no appt.At a more flashy saloon you would pay maybe $35 for a shampoo,style and cut. Coffee anything from $4.50 to $8,although I drink mainly instant style that I make myself.I would pay $5 for a Perk bottomless coffee though. Thai women:From what I know during the war in Vietnamese/Cambodia regions,many western soldiers jumped the borders so to speak,seeking love with the women of northern Thailand and. Cambodia.So as a flow on from that,many are not full Thai,but yes beauty is in abundance not just Isaac.I found my beautiful wife in Lop Buri. One of the best things I find about Thailand is the Respect levels shown to others,especially to elders.The climate is so inviting,everyday is teeshirt,shorts and jandals.I find my health is better when I am there,as Thailand does not have the huge swings in temperature that we get here in NZ.As a mild asthmatic I do struggle with the climate in NZ. Fruits and vegetables,so much choice ,spoilt for choice and very cheap We have planted a few fruit trees at our Lop Buri house and watch them developing on cctv.As we can only live out ofNZ for 6 months per year before our pension is cut off we try to make the most of NZ winters in Thailand. Serious Question: Do you worry about life in retirement years,as Thailand has no universal pension system ,so if you are incapable of earning yourself,where will you get the money to survive.Are you finding that you are to put away now to provide for that time when it comes? Hi Trevor, I will probably broach on this in a vlog on Naked Guru, but Damo and I try and live a month and buy a month, so we save a month for retirement, i usually allocate these funds to different investments, this land we just bought with farm house being one of them, we figure if we had an air bnb, decent stocks and precious metals, small side businesses and ability to produce food and sell livestock we will be fine, we dont really see our retirement as sitting on beaches etc but moreso doing what we are doing now, in some ways we feel retired already but yes leaving my corporate job and cashing our my pensions was a huge risk, one that we have to deal with being apart form the system from now on :)
It's ok to eat at a restaurant as long as you know that they have cleaned all the vegetable's thoroughly, because some don't, also the rice farmer's shouldn't lay the rice on the road, I've had occasions when driving going round a bend to be confronted with Rice on the road and a car coming and I've had to swerve into the rice to avoid an accident, keep the videos coming Ryan, always great to hear your thoughts, be safe

Fantastic vlog Ryan I definitely prefer rural Thai a true community and culture’ Scotland uk man’s haircut and faces have is usually done by Turkish barber £25/30 and child’s haircut £15 and a little poky hairdresser is charging £78 for ladies cut and colour if you go to a nicer hairdresser it can cost £130 and Mussage can be around £45/55 pound the greed is not normal’ it’s hard to enjoy the treat when you know you are paying a high price thank you for your video
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder ! It's a little difficult to compare urban sino/ Chinese-Thai beauty with rural "indigenous girls with Mon-Khmer or Tai heritage". Beauty can be found everywhere but Thai notions of beauty seem to favour the Chinese-Thai look or even trying to look Korean. Its great that internationally so many people recognise the beauty of darker Buriram and other Isaan women- but a pity that they seem to be so underrepresented in Thai media. I Hope the damaging skin whitening creams aren't as popular as they were a few years back. I will always like the natural Isaan look and natural complexions.
I think you touched on something interesting. I apologize if I intruded into your comment. I am Laotian living in the U.S. What you said made me wanting to discuss so many things concerning Thailand and Laos because I see Thai people as brotherly people. 30 or 40 years ago, I remember most Thai movie stars or celebrities were what you would consider real Thai people. Nowadays, it seems to me that there is hardly any of them any more. From What I have seen on youtube, almost any kind of media is fronted by Chinese Thai. Even in government, quite a few priministers have been people of Chinese descents. I think the main reason why there is almost no real Thai poeople being represented in the media is because the media is owned by Chinese Thai. I suspect that they own everything that is important. There is a form a tribalism or racism existing in Thailand. I am not sure if people like Damo even understand this kind of issue. It is sad actually. I also believe that their educational system is terrible. They don;t teach people to be critical thinker. This is the most fundamental problem with Thai and Lao people. They are nice but they lack critical thinking ability.

I save so much of my UK salary by living here and working on the phone. Rent back home now is 35k to 40k baht a month compared to 8k here in Pattaya.

My local barber in Sydney is 28 AUD and thats cheap for here now. When I'm in thailand I always get a cut before coming back home.

Although we're not living there currently :(. . Big one for me is just feeling more free from the bureaucracy and weight of having forms, fines, taxes, etc,etc of western countries (we live in Australia currently, want to move back to Thailand when possible.... . Although there are problems and corruption everywhere, the Thai leadership/government still seems much more in line with the Thai people. Western nations 'leadership' just wants to sell the people out as fast as they can, etc.
Great video, thanks guys. I've only lived in Bangkok less than a year now after 27 years in Poland and 20 in Australia, but apart from (or expanding on, really) what you mentioned here I also really enjoy how gender roles are quite "traditional" here, especially while the western world seems to be heading the opposite direction. A simple fact how 90% of all customer service is female, it just seems to work well for everyone. Also how present sport facilities, like football, basketball fields, parks, outdoor swimming pools are and how people across all ages are actively enjoying them. In some ways moving here feels like being taken back in time to growing up in communistic Poland in the '70s, in a good way. For example, in many places in the world putting together a group of 22 football players to enjoy community matches would be quite a challenge, not here.
Couldnt agree more and the ladyboys are allowed to be who they are and are celebrated but its not a big deal and they dont need to push it on others.
Yea, I was thinking the same the other day. Wherever there is a true acceptance there is no need for "supporting", marches and waving flags and slogans, "raising awareness", manifesting "pride", mandating language, inclusiveness, diversity, none of that. In fact there is not even a need to think of the attitude as "acceptance". It's almost like you have to create the intolerance first to then stand against it. In a sense it's the majorities' delusion and a sense of superiority in the first place to think that the minorities even need their acceptance.
Makes me think of a Chillian friend of mine who once said to me where he grew up there was not even a concept of racism, different ethnicities just grew up together not thinking about it. @@lifeinruralthailand

Hi, almost fully agree. You need to get outside Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy to find the real Thailand. There is hardly any poverty in Thailand. There are lots of people who do not have very much but they are completely happy and are well supported by family and friends. Compare with western countries where there are lots of destitute people despite receiving free accommodation and other government handouts. My one point of disagreement:- Nakhon Ratchasima girls are the most beautiful.

I just had a thorough clean and polish of teeth. In Australia it would have cost me $500 ! Here it cost $50 ( approx tb1000 ) . I'm replacing two crowns too, costing. 24,000 baht. That's $1,000. Australian . In Australia they charge $2,500 each !!!! Dentistry in Australia is grossly and unethically over priced. The standard here in Thailand is exemplary .

Not surprised there is no one in those coffee shops, at those prices, you are getting close to what I charge here in Florida and at around $15/ hr wages here for basic help in that business you can see the issue there! Also, I would think this discrepancy could in the future create some social tensions.
I agree with you.. Isaan girls are the most beautiful and moreover, they have a kind spirit. Jai dee is their normal character, probably spelt incorrectly!
I also find even in the suburbs Bangkok that I am regularly the only one in a nice cafe. normally it's staffed by 4 or 5 young ladies, well fitted out interior but very few customers. I guess it only works if the wages/rents are so low compared to what they can charge for the few drinks they sell 🤷🏻♂️ which also seems to lead to a massive oversupply and duplication of things like coffee shops

In Adelaide, South Australia, I get a 'short back and sides' cut for AU$20, THB490 (until my hairdresser moves her business to a home shop next year, which is too far for me to travel. Most places, cuts for men cost AU$30+

Haircut and beard trim in Pattaya was 300thb. Oddly a coffee in McDonald's in Pattaya is triple the cost of the UK - go figure!
I think sight, sound (both from nature) taste and having a nice place all to just your family most of the time (I don't enjoy crowded places) would be great reasons to live in a certain place.

Hi Ryan,Demo,very interesting show today about the many good reasons etc to live in Thailand.Here in Christchurch,NZ I pay $22 for a no frills haircut,walk in no appt.At a more flashy saloon you would pay maybe $35 for a shampoo,style and cut.
Coffee anything from $4.50 to $8,although I drink mainly instant style that I make myself.I would pay $5 for a Perk bottomless coffee though.
Thai women:From what I know during the war in Vietnamese/Cambodia regions,many western soldiers jumped the borders so to speak,seeking love with the women of northern Thailand and. Cambodia.So as a flow on from that,many are not full Thai,but yes beauty is in abundance not just Isaac.I found my beautiful wife in Lop Buri.
One of the best things I find about Thailand is the Respect levels shown to others,especially to elders.The climate is so inviting,everyday is teeshirt,shorts and jandals.I find my health is better when I am there,as Thailand does not have the huge swings in temperature that we get here in NZ.As a mild asthmatic I do struggle with the climate in NZ.
Fruits and vegetables,so much choice ,spoilt for choice and very cheap We have planted a few fruit trees at our Lop Buri house and watch them developing on cctv.As we can only live out ofNZ for 6 months per year before our pension is cut off we try to make the most of NZ winters in Thailand.
Serious Question: Do you worry about life in retirement years,as Thailand has no universal pension system ,so if you are incapable of earning yourself,where will you get the money to survive.Are you finding that you are to put away now to provide for that time when it comes?

Hi Trevor, I will probably broach on this in a vlog on Naked Guru, but Damo and I try and live a month and buy a month, so we save a month for retirement, i usually allocate these funds to different investments, this land we just bought with farm house being one of them, we figure if we had an air bnb, decent stocks and precious metals, small side businesses and ability to produce food and sell livestock we will be fine, we dont really see our retirement as sitting on beaches etc but moreso doing what we are doing now, in some ways we feel retired already but yes leaving my corporate job and cashing our my pensions was a huge risk, one that we have to deal with being apart form the system from now on :)

Fantastic vlog Ryan I definitely prefer rural Thai a true community and culture’ Scotland uk man’s haircut and faces have is usually done by Turkish barber £25/30 and child’s haircut £15 and a little poky hairdresser is charging £78 for ladies cut and colour if you go to a nicer hairdresser it can cost £130 and Mussage can be around £45/55 pound the greed is not normal’ it’s hard to enjoy the treat when you know you are paying a high price thank you for your video

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder ! It's a little difficult to compare urban sino/ Chinese-Thai beauty with rural "indigenous girls with Mon-Khmer or Tai heritage". Beauty can be found everywhere but Thai notions of beauty seem to favour the Chinese-Thai look or even trying to look Korean. Its great that internationally so many people recognise the beauty of darker Buriram and other Isaan women- but a pity that they seem to be so underrepresented in Thai media. I Hope the damaging skin whitening creams aren't as popular as they were a few years back. I will always like the natural Isaan look and natural complexions.
I think you touched on something interesting. I apologize if I intruded into your comment. I am Laotian living in the U.S. What you said made me wanting to discuss so many things concerning Thailand and Laos because I see Thai people as brotherly people. 30 or 40 years ago, I remember most Thai movie stars or celebrities were what you would consider real Thai people. Nowadays, it seems to me that there is hardly any of them any more. From What I have seen on youtube, almost any kind of media is fronted by Chinese Thai. Even in government, quite a few priministers have been people of Chinese descents. I think the main reason why there is almost no real Thai poeople being represented in the media is because the media is owned by Chinese Thai. I suspect that they own everything that is important. There is a form a tribalism or racism existing in Thailand. I am not sure if people like Damo even understand this kind of issue. It is sad actually. I also believe that their educational system is terrible. They don;t teach people to be critical thinker. This is the most fundamental problem with Thai and Lao people. They are nice but they lack critical thinking ability.
