I just built a jig similar to yours. I made 3 clamps for mine, and rather than gluing the bottom rails to the jig, I used only screws. If something should happen, and I need to replace any of the rails, it's as easy as removing a few screws. I also used bolts and T-nuts on the front and back of the clamps. This allows you to adjust pressure at both ends of the clamps.
I'm new to making flags. Made about a dozen so far. I made your jig today and used it. It's awesome. Makes assembly so much easier and exact. I made mine exactly like yours. Thanks for the video!
I like the jig Dave. Great idea 💡 for us flag builders. I’d suggest treating the plywood and 2X material with furniture wax or cover it with wax paper to prevent the flag from sticking to it during glue up.
At first I wasn't sure what in the heck you were doing lol. The jig wasn't make sense, until you showed the final shot, then it all came together lol, yeah just think a guy like me is building stuff! Seriously though, this is a great idea, thank you for not only making and sharing it but for being so precise so all anyone has to do is take notes from the video without having to download and pay for "plans" like I see so many You Tubers doing.

I’ve made a couple of flags that came out pretty good. I like the idea of a story stick since it took a bit of geometry to lay out the 13 stars on 2 Betsy Ross flags. Thinking for my next I’m going to cut rabbets on the stripes essentially making them ship lap. I’ll cut a chamfer on the stripes to give them more definition. Any thoughts?

Seems like you made a jig to do something a couple pieces of a 2x4 and a couple cinder blocks could do just fine. Seems like an overkill situation to me.
LtCol Killgore and I guess I may be able to see you view except many people, along with myself make many of these flags. We also in most cases pride our selves on quality work that I just never can seem to get with cinder blocks and 2x4s. Thanks for you input though!!

LtCol Killgore I can see that maybe for one flag. But even for 1 Flag it does make it more uniform and square. When doing many flags it helps with repeatability again and all again with the same results each time.
Any specific dimensions on your jig that seem to work better than others? Since this is for 19.5 x 37 inch flags, I was going to cut my base 21 x 38.5 inches then with the 1.5 inch edge guides it of course makes the usable base 19.5 x 37 inches. If I make the hold downs 33 inches which would have them sticking out 6 inches top and bottom and have the top be a 2x4 and the bottom a 2x2, do you see a problem with that? Also using a 3/4 inch base since I have an extra piece laying around. Thanks for any input and take care.
JAMES WEST II sounds pretty good. If you look close at mine the plywood is a little short going the 19.5 height. It's just the size that Habitat for Humanity sold and was laying on the shop. So yes make sure it's going to be over sized a little. I actually like mine being a little short, by about a half inch so that my clamps will make contact with the flag and then the jig at the bottom.

Now just need to figure out how I want to do the stars, either paint through template, dremel, glue purchased 1" stars on or chisel. Don't have the patience to chisel so I guess I can delete that option, lol. Thanks again.
Have you ever did a glue up with the slats along with the rear bracing or do you not feel there is really a need. I was worried about squeeze out getting on stained and finished front especially with the flag being face down in jig.
Putting that blue line on the American flag is desecration of our flag. And it is disrespectful to anyone that fought and died for the flag. Just one mans opinion

My customer base is growing for flags and so this is a fantastic jig and the flag always looks better if all of the stripes are flush!

Could you notch the top board and add a t-nut for a top to bottom clamp as well. This could help when adjusting for flag sizes

Danny Mathews I believe the blue is called True Blue. And for the white I use marshmallow both from minwax.

Do you use this jig for the glue up or just making sure all pieces align?
As you can see in the video, I do not glue my stripes. This allows for the wood movement.

JAMES WEST II make sure your stars are about 1.2 inches from tip to tip to have the correct approx size of the official flag size. Mine are 1.25 inch

Rick jobs they can sell anywhere from $50 to $350. All depends on quality, why yours offer, and who is willing to pay for it.
