      As far as I know only 40 % of the U.S. people are able to drive manuals. I agree that´s a lot in a country where 93 % of the cars have an automatic transmission. I wonder how many japanese people are able to drive stick. In Japan 99.9 % of the cars have automatic. Here in Germany just 25 % have automatics. Many people here have problems to drive automatics

    This is the sound I've been looking for for 50 years. When I was a kid in the early 60s I lived about a mile from a refinery that had a fleet of these. They drove by my house every day, all day, screaming like demons from hell. It's a sound I can still hear in my head. This video is the closest I've heard since.

    • @gilb8072
      @gilb8072 Před 3 lety +11

      When I was a kid there was a big trucking company 1 mile from the house. They weren't allowed to run on Sundays before 9pm. At 9, I would go in my sister's room to listen to those White Mustangs and B Model Macks start up and leave. IT was beautiful.....one of the reasons I drove for 45 years.......and yes, hard of hearing!lol!

      It just sounds like its running fast because of the engine being a 2 stroke. It fires everytime the piston hits top dead center, unlike a 4 stroke. If you look closely at the gauge the most it hits is about 3k rpm.

    Ok This is a Detroit 4/53 T meaning 53 cubic inches per cylinder and 4 of them. So that makes it only 3.48 litres in capacity. Look at 27 seconds in the video how it builds speed, impressive. Some people bag the Two stroke Detroits blah ,blah, but realize no four stroke engine of this capacity has its performance then and only maybe now with computers ,common rail injection, and multi-shot piezo electric injectors. Not bad for an engine designed in and around WW2. Its a two stroke so its supercharged and turbo charged hence the crazy sound. Its also a modular engine meaning the rods, pistons etc was common whether 3,4,6,8 cylinder etc. Completely bananas and I love it. Thank so much Glen Tuckey truckin. Loved them when I was a little boy, love em now.

      my old man taught me how to doubeclutch with twin stick fuller transmission long time ago.i ws 15 or so. it was an old truck from the 50s with a great Perkins diesel engine in the front . i loved to drive it. it is not that difficult, it is also about feeling. not just stamping down that pedal and jerk it into another gear.big fun to drive though. i still do it in my car, although completely unnecessary, but old habits die slowly i guess..

      actually the hardest part to me was always down shifting at first revving the engine to lose speed thru me for a loop for a week

      Stephenie Grenoble bit late but couldn’t get over your ignorant comment, they didn’t say anything about the setup as it’s quite obvious what it all does. When driving the hard part IS remembering what gear you’re in, especially if you haven’t driven it before and can’t telling by looking at or touching the left shifter..

    I love all the you tube twin stick cowboys. All the one I see on here have power steering. It was a lot tougher without power steering back in the day. Most old trucks never had it.

    Someone mentioned today (as I recall) no modern two stroke diesel are made. Electromotive Division GM has been using a turbo supercharger since the 1960's the Turbo is spooled off the cam shaft like a supercharger. When the boost reaches a certain point where the boost matches the throttle/RPM, the clutch disengages and the turbo will free wheel providing both boost and scavenging. This eliminates turbo lag. Detroit Diesel came up with something similar called the by-pass blower. Fairbanks Morse opposed piston engines, are turbocharged and have no roots type blower. Huge Marine diesel most are two stroke are turbocharged. EMD has not made a two stroke in years because of EPA Tier 4 particulate emission standards. They use computers and EFI to control swirl and make a more efficient engine. But I love the sound of a Detroit. As far as I know Detroit Two strokes are produced for off road such as in construction equipment.

    Drove a 5 x 4 x 3 3 stick in the early 70's, hauled heavy equipment. Most of the time starting out the only way to upshift up was with the jake. I'll never forget
