My Great Grandmother was a cook to King Edward. She was considered a 2nd class citizen as a servant because of her position. My Great Grandfather was a bricklayer and considered a 3rd class citizen under the class system back in the day. They immigrated to USA and my Great Grandfather opened his own building bussiness and built a lot of the town he moved to including surrounding areas. He was able to buy a house and raise his family. The house still is in the family to this day.

My family came from Ireland and suffered during the famine some moved to the USA my grandmother told me that she was related to Bing Crosby she remembers his mother coming to Ireland to visit them when my grandmother was a child, I don't know if this is true but if it is then I have a famous relation 🙏

That's a shame, it was a good series. Have you ever watched "time team"? That's a historical show where they dig up stuff, not sure if it's exactly the same but you may like it. Victorian Farm or Tudor Farm was on I think on BBC2, interesting stuff too. We love our history here in the UK. The Peasants' Revolt was really good, Tony Robinson does lots of these shows.
I have been loving Kirstie in all of these. She never complains, just jumps right in, does her best and seems to be enjoying herself - Go Kirstie!
I agree, her moment at 40:34 is so poignant "I could get jiggy with it". I hate her politics but she's got a great work ethic and a solve-it attitude.

Having seen several of these experimental archeology shows in the U.S. I am glad to see that she's as enthusiastic about the experience, when in the Colonial House series or the Pioneer House series, the Americans were constantly cheating and sneaking and refusing to embrace the experience fully. Kind of ruins the experience for the viewers and takes away from the experience of living the past.
Right? I was put off because she was cursing in the intro, but she throws herself into it and does the best she can. And she's funny. :)

I am impressed at how capable and resourceful Kirstie Alley was in that series. She can tackle all the tasks and without much fussing and complaining. I didn’t expect that from a Hollywood actress.

Actors in Hollywood are just like all of us;
and usually prior to their big break, would have labored over many varied jobs. I have heard big stars saying they worked as short-order cooks, waiters/waitresses, gas station attendant, barber, garbage collector, landscaper, construction worker, store manager, auto mechanic, dancers/singers, etc.
Perhaps renowned actors discovered as children, like the Olsen twins, may never have learned life skills of making a living. But I think if deep in a person's character they are hard workers with strong discipline, anyone can apply themselves and be good at most things tried.
Why have I never heard of this? Finally a "reality" show worth watching!

You should check out their Edwardian Farm, Georgian Farm, and Victorian Farm series!! They're just as good as this series!!!! I've watched them all, including the Christmas specials, like 3 or 4 times already!! Lol
You might like the "Farm" serieses. Victorian Farm, Edwardian Farm, Tudor Monastery Farm... All are available on CZcams as well as Amazon Prime. They star a historian, Ruth Goodman, and 2 archaeologists, Peter Ginn and Alex Langlands, and they spend an entire year on a farm set in the respective time periods. You actually learn a LOT about the lives of the people who actually lived in those times.

I notice that anything with Ruth, Peter, and/or Alex is entertaining as well as educational. Same with Sir Tony Robinson, the presenter for this show. I fell in love with him on Time Team. He's gonna be 75 this year.
Never thought I'd ever say it, but I like Kirsty Allie in this series. She's mature, confident, and very resourceful.
And she knows a few things about kitchens!! Lots of actresses don’t actually learn to cook-not even well enough to feed themselves. I was impressed the most when Kirsty caught the teeny tiny flame with a candle after the using tinder, flint and steel. I know it’s supposed to be common sense, but it was really good thinking on her part
I can't quite past the fact that she is a very dedicated $cientologist. I feel the same way about Tom Cruise and John Travolta. His wife Kelly Preston.waited too long to see a non-$cientologist oncologist so her breast cancer had already spread. When their son died they were not allowed to grieve.
I feel like she's the strongest in the series. The benefits of being a has-been? I've been rooting for her since Cheers, but she's had some challenges...
@@marthahawkinson-michau9611 She was quite confident when she found herself in the kitchen the first time and was asked to improvise on a failed dish. She said that as a hostess she has done many dinner parties and made many dishes and fixed problems herself. I was especially impressed when she (and the others) excelled in the medieval kitchen. All those meals that she helped pull off was mind boggling. She had the most fun doing this. Good for her!
In all the periods so far Greg and Kirstie would be people I'd hire. Greg mucks in with no complaints and works hard, Kirstie has the widest skill set of all of them. Pity she wasn't in the dairy, she already said in a previous episode she can milk cows too.
As someone who has OCD and a fear of germs I just really want to commend the man for getting into the pen, facing his fears and cleaning the sheep. it's something that probably would have been difficult for him, he did so well.
Me, who's had microbiology classes relating to the food industry....... Listeria, Staphylococcus, E. coli, coliforms.... Whatever may lay in these things wont be good.
But a few good hand washes should be enough to clean everything off.

But when you have OCD and/or a fear of germs. You know logically your hands will clean. But your mind makes it a bigger thing that it is. Sometimes it’s not so much the germs or the dirt. It’s the thought of it. There have been times where I have been in extreme distress over just opening a door in my own home, because of the potential germs.
I know my hands will clean, but it’s still the thought of touching it. That’s why I’m commending him. He faced his fears and got in the pen.

I just think the biggest germs on the planet are humans, so if I can deal with them, nothing else will kill me! Maybe if you can tweak your outlook, that might help? Not easy, I know, especially as you said you realise. Dare those bugs! Touch that door handle! then, when they don't kill you, you have won for a while. Every time you touch things and don't get sick, you have won! Eventually you will be invinceable. . In that you will literally be able to handle things. How do you deal with supermarkets or clothes shops? You are bigger than a germ! Despite Covid!

Bless your heart! You're absolutely right. However, what sucks with OCD is it's not about logical fear. It's Obsessive Compulsive Disorder -- meaning the fear trigger is a larger-than-life fixation that is extremely hard, if impossible, to override with logic. It all depends on the severity of the disorder as to whether mind-over-matter is enough to push through it.
That said, with medication, therapy AND your optimism, one might be able to bring it under a reasonable level of control. Chris’s mind over matter attitude was enough for him. He said it was like a switch went off in his brain--his determination to get the job done was enough to override his irrational fixation and fear. So your optimism and empowering thoughts can help!
You just don't know how much I appreciate these programs... they're like a breath of fresh air and learning as well.

It's basically what the History channel and Discovery Channels departed from to have shows about trucks and constant re-runs of shark shows and useless things.
This channel actually has VERY enjoyable shows and episodes.
Zoey wouldn't last long in these time periods. I love seeing how people were really treated without being made look so rosy like the movies.

Zoey has been the weakest of the cast. It feels like she's not even trying. Sure everyone had an issue of being looked down upon. But they at least made an honest go at it. They were committed to what they signed up for. She just flat out gives up.

Yes, as the other woman got on with the job like adults, even when things didn't go right for them, but kept at it regardless.
Zoe just sat about whining about her tasks, and wanted to be outside with the lads, to play with the animals, or probably flirt wit them..
The dairy maids were very popular also because of their cleanliness, and rightly so. Everything, including their hands, that came into contact with milk for dairy products had to be kept very clean or the effect of their work would get contaminated and spoiled.
And they were fit for a strenuous job which usually meant they were young.
And they were frequently resistant to smallpox, so more likely to have unscarred faces.
nearly everyone else was scarred with smallpox so the dairy maids must have been envied. By catching cow pox, it made them resistant to smallpox. Such a terrible virus...it killed more people than any other virus in history.
and they got the cream... mmmmmm. I'd kiss a milkmaid for some cream.
They didn’t have germ theory yet, but dairy producers have understood the connection between contamination and food spoilage for centuries. It’s exactly why they always kept the dairies spotlessly clean.

This is such a good show, I could watch this every day without getting tired of it. I am a bit amazed that Zoe played a part in all this since she does not take it very seriously or enjoy the experience. I do understand one does not like to pluck feathers when you are vegan, but she isn't. 🤔

I agree it's so frustrating seeing a grown woman act like a dejected teenager who doesn't want to participate. Also I would say that women have only liberated themselves recently and we should all be thankful that they have, but what does she expect going on a living history program apart from cleaning/being in a kitchen? I mean it is highly likely that they would be. They tried to change it for the jousting episode by making them all men but that was more an episode in a bottle. It just frustrates me because however stressful it looks it also looks like a fantastic experience. Weird also that the other sports people on here have such positive attitudes even when Greg was emptying chamber pots.
Good Lord these people cannot take simple instructions! I mean she told them at the very beginning to fill the churn halfway but what did they do shut it all the way and then we’re amazed that it didn’t work. Geniuses 🤦🏻♀️

As someone who grew up on a homestead, I know that having a picturesque farm is a little silly (its REALLY hard to keep farms looking like that) but I've got to admit these model farms probably had excellent livestock health!

I find it amazing how in their last episode of edwardian history they called all of the women "Jane" yet this one they used their actual names..it seemed to be such a huge issue for them to not be called by their names last time so it's kinda interesting to see how that one simple gesture makes !!
The Victorian Edwardian era could be considered a time when the status (in society and financially) of servants are very strict. Well at least compared to earlier periods
(there was still class distinctions between master and servants, but not in the same way in the Victorian and Edwardian era.)
As you can see in the 18th-century servants were allowed to wear clothes ( which enables them to dress as nice as they could afford on their salary) and use their own names.
The servants in the 18th century, have been known to dress so nicely that there have been many satirical prints that make fun of the fact that maids dress as nicely as their mistresses.
Search "John Raphael Smith “Like Mistress-Like Maid” 1781" to see what I mean
Fashion was something accessible to everyone thanks to cast-off clothing from the rich. Daniel Defoe wrote about it in a pamphlet in the 1720s which said ,
" It is a hard Matter to know the Mistress from the Maid by their Dress, nay very often the Maid shall be the much finer of the two… The Apparel of our Women-Servants should be regulated… I am entirely against any Servants wearing of Silks, Laces, and other superfluous Finery; it sets them above themselves, and makes their Mistresses contemptible in their Eyes."

Yeah The Edwardian mistress looked like she had a nasty smell permanently lodged up her nose. The Georgian work while hard and life far from our modern "comforts " was a step up. Of course it's also possible the gang just got lucky this go around.
My understanding is that calling someone by their first name in this time period was actually a sign of their inferiority. For example a mistress would call servants by their first names, but if you read Jane Austen or other works from the Georgian period you will notice everyone calls their equals and superiors "Miss so-and-so" "Mr such-and-such" or by whichever title they hold. Even wives in their homes refer to their husbands as "Mr ". Basically it's being respectful. So in this case calling them by their first names is less friendly and more a sign of reinforcing class and status.
@@--enyo-- Right! So imagine calling them by a first name that isn’t even theirs. Not only are you going by a first name, but they don’t even bother to remember what your first name is to begin with, reminding you yet again of just how inferior you were.
Many viewers on yt don't memorize people's names either. There's many comments who just call people by their appearance or what they do.
I started homesteading a couple years ago and i already learned a couple of these lessons the hard way too, like with the bread and the butter.

At 40:07 that lady’s smile and nod at Meg was personal, not acting. She knew that she worked hard and was showing how proud of her she was. One of my favorite moments on this episode.

Re: dairy maids: Victorian Farm also taught us that dairy maids were considered lovely because they had to keep fastidiously clean so as not to contaminate the milk!

Did they leave a fire going in the bread oven while the bread was baking? That's not how ovens like that are supposed to work. Leaving fire in it made it into a pizza oven. A bake oven has a fire that heats up the body of the oven. Then the fire is raked out, then a mop is used to remove the ash and then the baking is done with the heat that the oven has stored.

***AWESOME TWIST ON PRESENTING HISTORY*** The intro mentioned 2015 as the year they were being "Time Crashed" from... it's 2021 and this is the first I've ever heard of this incredible show!! What an innovative and engaging way to present history!! Seeing real people actually living through, and doing, the hardest and worst parts of the life of a "lower class" person from that time has a way of taking it off the page (or screen, in this case) and making it a very "visceral" experience for the viewer.
Unlike the traditional narrative vehicle or a even a full-on biographical film of the time, the fact that the show is part "Survivor" and part "History Channel", noting things like "matches hadn't been invented yet" and "granulated sugar wouldn't be invented for another century", while watching Kirstie work the tinder box to start fire or Zoe shave the sugar or Michelle spending 4 hours(!!) to make the butter, really brings the struggles of that time period to life in a way that's as close to "virtual reality" as it gets!

The bread came out of the oven almost burnt on the outside and still gooey inside. Is it possible to have too much fire in the oven and thus be too hot? Think of it as a modern oven when baking cake at 500 degrees versus 325 degrees.
