- A visit to Folkestone, on Kent's coast. A vibrant seaside town you are going to want to discover.
Our video will hopefully explain why you will want to travel to the southeastern edge of England for a mix of history, culture, fine food (Or maybe naughty food), perhaps a pint, or a nice cup of tea.
We'll walk you through the different areas of the town to show you what this rejuvenated town has to offer the visitor
Folkestone is known as a terminus for the Eurotunnel, or 'The Chunnel', but there's so much more to see and do here - are you ready to discover more?

I was in Folkestone in the 8th grade (2014) with my class, I loved Folkestone and I miss it.
Greetings from Germany â€ïžđŹđ§đ©đȘâ€ïž
đ Danke,- I'm so glad you liked the video, and it brought back fond memories.đ What part of Germany are you from? We're a little sad that we haven't visited Germany this year, we love your country, so many fond memories. Let's hope next year we'll be back and we can discover a bit more. Take care - stay safe đ
p
Itâs so nice to see that Folkestone didnât end up in loss and decay as it once started to become after the ferries and railways stopped at the harbour dealing a mortal wound to the town, My Mother who was born and bred in Folkestone would be happy at its survival, Although Iâm not sure what my Grandfather would have made of it as he worked on the Harbour after returning from WW1 would make of it all, Iâm glad myself that it has a new lease of life as I have very fond memories of Folkestone.
I agree with you totally; I like to see need life breathed into a place that's had tough times in the past (even if it does come with a little too much moustache wax!). I like what I see now, and the town seems to have a will for a better future. I hope Covid19 hasn't wrecked too many dreams.
I'm fascinated by the story of your Grandfather, that must of been one tough life and Folkestone today would probably make no sense, but I guess the same is true of the Victorians who promenaded from the Grand, along the Lees, the ever-changing world.
Where are you based now? Have you had a chance to see Folkestone recently? We want to head back and explore a little more because it was just so nice.
Our World For You Iâm living in Herefordshire now and I havenât been back to Folkestone for 20+ years, Perhaps I will visit again when we can all travel for Leisure again, My Grandfather left the Harbour and was working on the Railway during WW2 and yes he was a hard worker on the Harbour especially as people were visiting battlegrounds of WW1 during the 1920âs or the summer trips to Lourdes they wee very busy he said, My Motherâs memories of Folkestone and growing up there during the 1920âs are still with me even now, Yes please do revisit the town and film some more Iâll be pleased to see more.
Wow - You'll notice a difference, and for the better, I hope (I had the idea you may have emigrated so a return may be a challenge!) . I'm fascinated by the idea of history seen through real peoples eyes. I hadn't considered the 'pilgrimages' made after the war because the dead were not returned, and how that would have focused on one point. We've visited many Commonwealth War Graves on our travels. We actually dedicated a day trip to finding as many of those that fell from our village, just before Remembrance day in 2018. I like the fact that despite the changes in Folkestone it hasn't forgotten the past. Here's to heading back someday soon. đ„
I had a holiday there in 1950 when i was a small child, still got a picture of me and my family on a pebble beach.I believe my ancestors originated from there, but we moved to Australia soon after. Never forgot it though . cheers
đ That is fabulous, and do you know what, I suspect some parts have not changed in that time. Glad you like our little clip, Cheers to you, and stay safe & well. đ
Lovely,my childhood holiday destination, for several years.Last visited in 1968 ! This has rekindled many memories.Thank you.
Thanks Richard, it must have changed a bit over the years. So glad it brought back front memories. Take care, Janis & Gary
Watching this from Australia. Sent to me by my cousin Jason who lives in Folkestone. Its amazing to look and see where Jason lives, it makes my heart thrill.. I can't travel there yet can see it via this video. Blessed.
đ Wow, that's so nice to hear - đ€ we get a grip on the pandemic, and you can head over to enjoy Folkestone for yourself - There are some really nice parts to the town, and it's got a good heart. Take care, Stay Safe
I live in Folkestone and i have seen things come and go, It is such a grand town and there is so many hidden treasures. I remember standing on the Railway bridge on Tram Road watching the Flying Scotsman come through and the oriental express. Now with the new developments planned i think it will put Folkestone on another level.
I have to be honest I'm intrigued with the hidden treasures, I know we only touched on the surface with our video, but we'll be back so there may be a Folkestone II at some point. I love your positivity, that change is a good thing - I'm with you on that, I think Folkestone has a bright future, and I'm looking forward to returning in 2021.
@@OurWorldForYou I moved down here 4 years ago and the hidden treasure were the first thing I fell in love with here and I'm still discovering them now. Wonderful.
The great thing is Folkestone is evolving all the time, we need to pop back soon and catch up - need to see the new skate park, and all the other things that have happened since we were last in town.
Beautiful. I consider Folkestone my second home, gone there almost every summer of my life (I'm 16) and even lived there for a year. I live in the Czech Republic but my mum's English
That is so cool - long may you return. It's great having the diversity of heritage. There's so much history on your Czech & English sides for you to explore, and you'll have a unique perspective. Stay safe, stay well, and happy travels đ
Lovely little town Folkestone is, been going regularly since 2009 and always enjoy the scenery and the atmosphere. I donât know what it is, but the stink of fish while walking down the harbour next to bobs is nostalgic.
đ€Ł I'm sure Bob's happy about that. I think Folkestone great. We'd been a few times over the years but only really discovered it in 2019 - we're lucky it's only 45 minutes away by car so bring on the sun đ, and we'll be there đ
Iâm just here to see if people talk about the place I live in. I was happy to see this here.
Cool, lovely place to live đ - Hopes all's okay with you at the moment, we're looking forward to popping back to enjoying Folkestone again - we may be less than 40 miles away, but at the moment it could be the other side of the world. Take care, stay safe and we'll be along shortly đ - Gary
I've been there in summer 1982 , with school. One of my best vacations ever. I Will return, someday.
It's going to have changed a bit since then, but so's the whole world I guess - it's definitely worth a look, but probably better after the school holidays.
I loved it, I spent my holidays in Folkstone and it left me with an impression of loss when I returned, as the place is very welcoming and engaging... at the same time you feel the old soul of the city!!! It's inexplicable, it's a mix of past and present... as if souls were finally walking in peace through those wonderful places!!!
đčđčđčâ€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïžđđđ
đ Thanks so much Teresa đ Folkestone has changed so much over the years, and that change is continuing at pace, but I guess that's life; nothing stands still. There is something in the air here though, maybe the souls of those who went to the 'Great War', only never to return. If you wander down to the Harbour Arm, you can imagine the trains arriving and departing, bringing travellers from all over the continent.
Glad you like the video, thanks for taking the time to comment
Regards,
Gary & Janis
About to travel 400 miles from Glasgow to visit Folkestone for the first time. We may move for keeps...Loved your tour video.
Peter,
That's great; hope you like it. We love Folkestone, but some of the coastal towns are great too - make sure you take a look around if you get the chance (or there will be plenty to explore if you do head down here)
Of, and remember, if you head another 400 miles from Folkestone, you can visit;
Paris - 226mls
Bruges - 112 mls
Cologne - 304 mls
Amsterdam - 269 mls
Have fun, have fish 'n' chips, enjoy Folkestone.
All the best,
Gary & Janis
I didnât know all this was here! Iâve always passed through Folkestone on the way to somewhere else. Iâd love to visit the Warren as Iâve seen videos and it is a really interesting and beautiful place for wildlife.
Lucieni, Folkestone is worth discovering. It surprised us - in a good way. Like Margate it has turned a corner; whether you like the direction it has taken, well, it is for you to decide, but our words of advice are, give it a try - what have you got to loose?
Gary & Janis
What a great video, I am off to Folkestone tomorrow for three nights :)
Fabulous, have a great time - hopefully a few days in the sun đ
Me too, I'm off tomorrow morning for 5 nights!
Here's hoping you have a great time đ€ - weather doesn't look too bad đ
Channel cars is in folkenoel
What a great video! Very informative đ Planning on moving here from London. Must be so nice living by the sea! Thanks for the tips đ
đ Thanks, so kind. It's a great location, plan on heading back sometime soon to rediscover. You must be looking forward to relocating, a different world, and we love the creative side of the town. (It'll be great for some drone flying - too) đ
I just this and your soothing voice with music , and I stumbled on your channel at right time when im actually thinking positively to move into any seaside beauty of kent ! More power to you . Cheers !
Thank You
What a wonderful video of beautiful Folkestone. Very much appreciated - thank you đ
đ Thanks so much. It's nice to hear that our view of the world, and in this case Folkestone, is appreciated. I long for the day I can return, and we're not that far away. đ€ that will be some day soon.
Brings back very fond childhood memories of escaping north London for long summer holidays in Folkestone in the 1960s. The huge funfair with boating pool, watching rock making at Rowlands and taking the Leas funicular. I went back a few years ago and though a lot remains as I recall, a lot of the charming and quaint character had gone and a surprising number of very fine Victorian and Edwardian hotels had been replaced by architecturally-terrible modern buildings - like the Grand Burstin monstrosity - what were the town planners on in the 1970s and 80s? Having seen your excellent video though, I will give it another visit and see if I can re-embrace it for what it is now.
đ Thank you so much - I agree that a lot of harm was done in the '70's & '80's, I think they are working on concreting over the countryside now! Anyway, another story. I think the decline of the British Coastal resorts is a common one, but the good news is Folkestone, like so many is coming out of it. I think the Covid period may have dented its recovery, but hope it continues to spring back. We'll be back as soon as we can. Anyway, take care, stay safe and here's to a sunny day in Folkestone đ»
Stunning Folkestone!
We've got to pop back soon, perhaps after the school holidays, to look at it again - bet it's just a little bit better đ
Our parents had a small hotel / guest house here before ww2 up in Cheriton Gardens. They had to sell up in 1955/56 and take live in staff positions among the wealthy country house families still abundant in the UK at that time. We two twins, born in 1953, have almost no memories of Folkestone at all, but our older sisters enjoyed their first few years here and so did our parents and the extended members of the family who often came from Essex to stay with us.
We twins didn't know what we were missing!!
Rosie, thanks so much for that. Where are you now? Do you have the chance to visit? I think it might be very different now, those coastal towns have gone through ups 'n' downs over the years. There there are other places in Kent that I think may have changed very little. Places like Chilham that featured on our second little Kentish road trip. Anyway, thanks for the comment; stay safe, stay well and big smilesđ
Thank you for your lovely reply!
We ended up in Winchester, Hampshire, where our parents eventually retired after 4 upheavals/employments following their "Upstairs, Downstairs" careers.
I was lucky enough to be able to bring our Mum back to Folkestone for a weekend during the 1990's, Dad having passed away in 1971. However, they did get to spend a week at the Grand Hotel the year before he died which was really special for them both.
I've sent a link to your video over to my elder sister in Auckland hoping to motivate her into a future visit đ. We had been planning something similar prior to Covid-19 rearranging everyone's plans, but if it's too much for her to manage, I'll have to jump on the train later on this year for some seaside time on my own.
I'm so glad to have found your video and will be checking out more of them now for further information on the surrounding area.
All the very best, and thank you for making and posting such an excellent piece of work. Rosie x
Rosie, that's fabulous, let's hope your sister can get here - New Zealand is on the green list, but I know it takes much more than that to make it happen.
My sister went to college in Winchester in the '90s, and the only time we visited the city was for her graduation. We'll return (Covid had made us focus on a lot more of the UK) , just not sure when.
On the video front, we've a few more of our Iceland Series to run, and then we return to Kent, and we plan on returning to Folkestone for another look.
Anyway, thanks again. I try to make each video a little bit better, so hopefully, you'll keep on enjoying them. Take care, and happy & safe travels.
My grandfather was in the Canadian army was Stationed at Radnor park in 1944. And met my nana. she was a cleaner at the hospital and got the sack. She was to Scared to tell he dad she been sacked. She would hang around on the swings in Radnor park and then met my grandfather. One's the war over he went back to ontario canada sold his house and came back to england and married my nana
What a wonderful story, one of those examples of good things coming out of the war. A bit of a change from Ontario for Grandpa, though. A big city, capital of Canada to Folkestone. Still, Ontario has a bit of a European feel to it, I guess at the time another outpost of the Empire. Thanks for sharing
I was there in summer 2019 for an exchange. Your video just brought back memories of my best vacation of my whole life! Thank you so much
đ Thank you so much - love the feedback - where is home? And where else did you visit whilst you were in the UK?
@@OurWorldForYou I also went to Canterbury, London and Rye. It was just amazing and I hope to come back as soon as possible! I'm from Germany by the way â„ïž
Tino, how cool, we've both Rye & Canterbury on our list, but we just need to get out of this lockdown first đ€š. I'm just working on this week's video, which will be from Germany đ - Which part are you from? We'll hopefully be heading back for Christmas, plans are Aachen, Munster, Cologne & maybe another - who knows. Anyway, take care, stay safe and best wishes from us.
@@OurWorldForYou I live near Cologne and it's very beautiful, but if you are looking for a charming, nice, historic city you should visit Leipzig it has beautiful old houses and a lot of German culture and charm. I'm really looking forward for your next video! đđ» Greetingsđ©đȘ!
Leipzig is on our list, perhaps 2022 đ€ We've been to Cologne many times at Christmas, I think it's 11 or 12, but it's mostly motorway/Autobahn from home, but it only takes 5 hours from home so pretty easy đ
Lovely as always ...â€

Great video of Folkestone, we love the Kent coast too!
đ Thanks so much, we've a bit more of the Kent coast to discover, then there's the journey inland so much to see & do. Looks like there's gonna be more UK content for the early part of the year.

great idea, when we're out and about again shooting footage we'll make sure we'll include some. We're still working our way through our archive - in fact, working on next Friday's release at the moment. A little further afield though.
@@OurWorldForYou I look forward to it!
I live in Folkestone and have done so for most of my life. I love this town and it is so sad to see this town go down hill because of the decisions the local council have made by over-charging for the commercial tax rates. As the months and years go by there are more and more vacant shops and with each there has been a steady decline in the town tourism. The local council think that over-charging the commercial rates and turning the town is what is best for the town, and this might be for the short term however thanks to this narrow minded thought process the local council have doom Folkestone to become a ghost town.
Steve interesting points from a local, and you are not the only one to comment on the local politics in play at Folkestone. As an outsider, I see somewhere that looked vibrant and interesting, a different type of coastal regeneration, and we will be back to explore a little more - so as a tourist, it worked for us - How it looks post-Covid, and post-Brexit, who knows - maybe that will bring local issues to a head. Anyway, I hope you are staying safe & well and here's to a better future đ» (In your opinion, what's the best pub in Folkestone?)
@@OurWorldForYou Folkestone has been staying safe during the pandemic, we were confused when the government put us into tier 3 when London was put into tier 2 even though we had a much lower rate of infection per 100,000 than most, if not all London districts at the time. Myself and others believe it must be because the Members of Parliament must need some of the Pubs to be open so they can spend our hard earned tax money getting drunk... lol...
As for the best pub in the town, that would have to depend on what kind of atmosphere you are looking for, personally I like a quiet drink with a good view, so I like to drink in the Ship and when I am with my children I like to have a drink at The George as during the summer I can let my Children play in the fountain outside
Steve with you there - we're in a village just of Junction 5 of the M20 and we were also in T3, still avoided Covid so far. Looking forward to the first pint in a pub đș - looks like I'll have to check out the Ship - bit too old for the fountains myself đ - Take care - Gary
Nice Vlog!
đ Thanks so much - appreciate that đ
Very nice.. Thank you..!
đ Thanks so much, appreciate the kind comment đ
Taker,,!
Used to go there with the army cadets, And we had the best time there nearly 30years ago now
Jamie, that made me smile - I was an Air Cadet; now what was that saying... Anyway, Folkestone's changed a lot in 30 years, but I guess, as a country, we've changed in that time too.
super video! My Folkstone video are very very far from this one. Great work
đ Thank you Andris - I loved your video - a nice honest view of Folkestone đ It's what I love we all have unique views of a place, and you're is an alternative - all good, stay safe, and happy travels.
