What do you think is more important: having a nice bike or a being strong rider? 🤔
Being a strong rider 100% for me. Though if you want to own a nice bike also, there’s nothing wrong with that either!
If you're racing: both (unfortunately). We know that World Tour riders are faster than ever, expected due to the bike.
For average riders? Being stronger is more important.
I'm just excited to see Darren's newest (and cheapest!) bike build yet!!
Take an amateur on a superbike, say, a carbon dura ace, then pit him against Peter Sagan on an aluminium Claris, that should be a decent experiment whether its really the bike, or the rider that counts lol
Is this really a serious question?
Poor Alfred just can't catch a break. Looking forward to his upcoming series on building a world beating bike on a budget.
Thank you Alex and Ollie for featuring the new Portofino G!
It's a great looking bike! 🙌
Great show this week Bingo and Bluey.
" I'm going to have to train more". Truer words have never been said!
I’m loving more and more GCNTech shows! Thank you Ollie and Marlin, love you guys!
Great to hear you are getting into it! What would you like to see us cover next? 👀
Wow the new guy Alan is so thoughtful yet everyone give him so much grief 😔
Hahahah we love Alan! 🙌
Ollie saying he doesn’t think he got faster but everyone else just got slower hits hard. Would’ve been fun to see an all out battle with everyone at their peak form.
Did you catch our big GCN presenters race on Zwift? We finally got to find out who the fastest is! 👉czcams.com/video/XUj1BpKE5Fc/video.html
@@gcntech did they all have their correct heights put in? We know a certain cheeky presenter has form 🤨
Good to see ollie and Bob again
I've become a bike tourist. Used to be a racer. When I raced, it was all about the rider, since back in the day we all raced on steel bikes with tubular tires and Campagnolo drivetrains. A Peugeot PX 10 was no slower than a Colnago in those days.
Now its a matter of how comfortable and reliable the bike is. And do I have the strength and endurance for the tour.
By the way, I just turned 74.
Great to hear you are still enjoying cycling 🙌Touring is a great way to take in your surroundings. What trips have you got lined up? 🗺
📈With nearly 600,000 subscribers to your tech channel alone, I would agree that you’ve likely influenced the racing scene quite a bit.
And that’s good, because when you’re not plugging your sponsors (I understand, I’m not hating) you’re providing a great deal of unbiased data and performance comparisons.
🌬️You’ve been harping the benefit of aero for years, and we’ve been listening.
Thanks for the comment! You know who to blame when everyone rocks up in parachute pants and capes to their next local crit race 😂
i like the new Pete Paton's Patents section :)
Honestly, Comments of the Week is the superior tech show segment. It promotes banter and engages the community much more than the Bike Vault.
For next week's show, can Brian do a review of his Superdry undies?
You have heard of "Am I smarter than a 10 year old". But Alex's new series of "Am I faster than a 10 year old" is going to be a great watch 😜😂
A 10 year old on a Eurobike
Hahah this could be great! The cogs are whirling at GCN HQ ⚙
The answer is "no"
Great idea for a series, Alex! Looking forward to seeing this. I have certainly avoided racing (group rides too) precisely because I don’t have a (fill in the blank) pro grade bike.
Hold our beer! 🍺 Video out soon 🙌
Excellant show Bill & Ted dudes
Ahh Pedro, you can't help it that Fred not only has you on the bike but also the banter. Good work rinsing him Ollie.
Pedro made me laugh
Loved Ollie’s “Something about Mary” hair during the wahoo ‘ad’ at about 15:30 into the show.
Make Ollie ride with biopace chainrings next week
Thanks for the supernice!!!❤❤❤
Ernie 😜, my wife is an Optometrist and yes tint for blue light is a real thing and works
Wahoo needs to bye the rights to the old "Road Rash" game. RGT AND Road Rash would be the ultimate esports combo game.
To be fair, the things you mentioned (socks, clothes) are reasonably affordable upgrades compared to, say, wheels, bars and frames. The helmet you have to buy anyway, so you’re probably £100-150 over a standard jersey and socks. It’s not mega cheap but not the £1000 a good wheel set can cost!
When I was in bike retail we said: "We have everything you need here to win....except the legs. You can't buy those." May it ever be so. We used to laugh those with $10K bicycles and .79 legs.
Video idea - Alex on an aero bike Vs Fred Meredith on the Eurobike. Should level the playing field
Ollie missed his chance to say "Superdry" instead of "Super nice" as Alex reached for cupcakes...
Never realised Ollie is so young at only 21. I thought he’s early 30’s
Bill & Ted’s Tech’scellent adventures were awesome this week! Like Bill, I tend to burn on the warm side too, sweat for fun! 🥵
Thanks Nicolas & Ollie great show
That Cadex tri bike looks like a stationary bike on wheels 🤣
Great show Ollie and Steve!
Great show guys👌🏻😍
Nice picks of oics on this weeks nice/supernice!
9:08 come on Ashton! Don’t give up
That’s me snookered then. I can’t justify spending so much money on top notch gear and have all the cycling prowess of an asthmatic ant.
I like the idea of the £500 bike series.
Turn those notifications on and don't miss the series! 🙌
Thanks "Superdry Derek " and Ollie ....
That last bike was super duper nice.
Alvin looks smart with the glasses on.
Maybe Fred should get a Jersey with Alex’s face on it as that’s as close as Alex is gonna get to Fred on his bike
Fred if your reading this... the challenge has been set!!! 👀
Happy birthday Ollie. 🎂
i have 2 bikes: a second hand 20 year old specialized hardtail which i use for going to places and messing around and a recently bought specialized diverge e5 2022 gravel, which i am currently only using on the road (to keep nice and new) and for rides. As with the hardtail, there is 100% a limit to how fast the bike can go (on flat) no matter how much power i put down. On my gravel bike, i have not reached that limit. So, I think it depends on the rider but the bike has to be good enough quality.
Regarding your bike vault criteria... A 53T (or whatever size big chainring is being used) and a 14T (on a Shimano 11sp cassette for example) gear choice, is the most efficient gear ratio regarding drivetrain efficiency (according to Friction Facts) as it gives you the straightest possible chainline. In my opinion, this should be the ideal gear choice for the bike vault and should not be judged harshly for not being on the 11t
You can argue, but it comes down to the fact that GCN (and most people agree) makes the rules.
@@billkallas1762 I'm not arguing, just stating my opinion
@@yogatriathlete Everyone thinks that their opinions are good.
@@billkallas1762 In a previous episode, Ollie himself mentioned a straight chainline would be an acceptable alternative gear ratio for the bike vault, especially since he's all about marginal gains
Alan missed an opportunity when he gave Ollie his cake. He should have brought it out on a pudding trolley...
Maverick the film even said "It's not the plane, it's the pilot" make believe but still relevant!
Alex is feeling his own GCN wrath. Everyone has got good kit cause everyone watches GCN 🎉
Ollie's face at 5k for frame only 🤣🤣
Alex, what a brilliant idea, a bike for £500. I shall be watching. What would be better still would be a racing series for £500 bikes so everyone can have a go without needing to be mega rich.
Happy birthday Ollie.
Great idea! Do you think racing is too elite and that it's stopping people get involved? 👀
You mean Alan, right?
@@gcntech If you need to spend thousands of pounds you don't have in order to be competitive, then what do you think?
Paytons Patent Patrol needs its own jingle...
Happy Birthday, Professor!
I’m not afraid to admit it. That’s me. All the gear, no idea. It is what is is, but it’s a learning curve.
Great vid. Hopefully superdry whens his next race against Fred.
I like how Alex realizing he's getting older (and slower) on camera. That's funny af. It's also pretty meta that GCN presenters are talking about the proliferation of expensive tech in cycling on a show whose raison d'etre is promoting expensive cycling tech. #GCNTech
I have to admit, the first thing that came to mind with Zwift steering is shoving someone off a cliff. And then you said it won't allow that. I felt a mix of embarrassment and disappointment.
Are those Superdry underpants nice or super-nice? And how aero are they?
Just a nice. Wasn’t in biggie smalls
Cycling demands SO much time on the saddle and if we can’t squeeze out any more time away from our families, jobs and other commitments it has become attractive to invest more in the tech. Great shows like this have allowed us to sift through the products for the ones that make a difference.
interesting point! Do you think the rise in tech is a bad thing for grassroots racing? 👀
@@gcntech I do not... At grass root sport (most sports) there is clear division between elite and recreational athletes, the main difference in all those sports is time spent training. Moreover, it's clear from this episode that gear does not challenge consistent good training over the long term... (I could go on about this topic in greater detail, but I'll tell you now... that wouldn't sell #boring)
Golfing is a clearer analogy for me. Could you beat Nick Faldo with expensive clubs and his were cheap? Goodness no! Agreed skill is more important than gear.
Maybe we should start doing like some of the car racing series where there is a low budget limit on the bike and clothing. That way you get the same level playing field and less expense.
Appreciate the vote on my Madone! For the record only the pedal was contacting the seawall. No Tron bikes were harmed in the making of the bikevault
That fellow, Sly Superfly or whatever he goes by today is such a thoughtful guy to bring birthday fixings.
Wooooo The Portofino G ...my god , vintage feel i would hang this on the wall lol...
Nooo bikes are meant be ridden! This one is calling out to get dirty 👀
Blue light triggers your responses to waking up as natural light has more blue tones in the morning. The reason you are advised to avoid screens before bed is because that screens emit a higher volume of blue light which can disrupt your sleeping pattern. Whilst everyone's circadian rhythm is different, they all take cues from your surrounding environment.
It’s all about the wang. Good rider great tyres. And a time trial rear set.
How big is it?
"Everyone got slower..." 😉 Nice one!
17:09 I think Ollie just invented a brilliant new game mode. Hill Climbs with Burnout 3 style Takedowns. Whoever is first to market with this could win the indoor cycling market!
Hahaha a GTA does online cycling 👀
@@gcntech You just reminded me that this exists, but it's sadly single player only.
czcams.com/video/81NpHMbSfR0/video.html
Where can we get a custom jersey with Wifey's face?!? Love the idea. Would do a Bob Marley face or something like that.
Am I the only one that noticed Ollie's massive lateral knee movement on the bit about the wahoo steering device?
31:25 Triathletes gonna hate you. Yes we will!
The years did not roll by fast. Ollie get through the years with aero!
New mini series, Alex Vs Fred 1 on 1 😂
Is that Lloydy‘s beer cupboard behind Ollie‘s left ellbow?
Cheers crew.
So, what I'm hearing about the RGT steerer is that there needs to be a PvP Mario Cart racing mode. So that you /can/ push your mates off a cliff.
Ollie is only 21? How early did he join gcn?
70 percent human. 30 percent bike
Just means the barrier to entry means competitive cycling is exclusive to the few who can afford it
Battaglin really got it… finally a bike tha looks, feels and handles like a road bike but with clearance for cross/gravel tires 😊 and MOST important a frame WITHOUT a trisillion mounting points and bolts scattered around the hole frame 👍
Whole*
Didn’t agree much with the poll pairings.. Giant next to the F12 😅
poor cameraman having war flashbacks to Si's giggling meltdown
For a brief moment (pardon the pun) at 10:59, I thought Alex had a Shimano tattoo.
Re: patent on wireless charging. Impossible to do without adding weight because of the extra components. Whilst I can see this being added lower down the stack at the top weight is too important. It would need to be sufficiently good that a smaller battery that weighs less is okay. Also I can’t think of anything as big as an e-bike battery that wireless charges.
Yikes! That Cadex Tri might be so bad it shouldn’t even get a ‘Nice’ 😬
#askgcntech
Dear GCN presenters,
First of all, thank you for producing such a great and diversified show.
I have a question regarding training VS aging.
I have heard/read/listened (somewhere on the internets) that it is very difficult to develop muscles after the venerable age of 60. I am wondering if FTP can be improved by training when you reach that age or if it is only possible to maintain what you had? I guess that aerobic capacity can be improved but what about FTP?
If it is possible to improve, are there exercices that are more suited for that goal?
Thanks!
Wow, I can't believe Ollie an Derek got changed into kit and onto their trainers for a Hack/Bodge f the week! The 3D printed phone tray's finish is good for a homemade device but the thumb shifters and stability of the unit looks horrible. I guess it's only the first version so could become a Hack.
You guys are a hoot.
10:57 Alex’s flappy superdrys are not aero.
It’s all about the rider ‘ 10% bike 90% rider
Put Fred on the eurobike and when he still beats mr Paton Alex should be driving a Fiat Multipla and wear the Specialized TT 5 helmet for a whole year.
I think having him ride that Cadex Tri is more of a punishment that a Fiat Multipla
@@rob-c. That thing was what made me think of a Multipla in the first place ;)
The Canyon is fine bike, yes. But there should not be any surprise that the Collage C68 won in the poll. I know Canyon is a major sponsor but there is no comparison if the poll is for most desirable. They are clearly in separate leagues.
"That bike looks like it might be leaning against a wall !! Oooo, scratched paint - we can't give that a super-nice !"
(Next bike, leaning up against a wall)
"Ooooo - is it too soon to give it a super-nice ?" :(
I think leaning your bike against a wall supported by its (wrapped) handlebars is a little more forgiving than leaning a bike against a low concrete barrier supported by its cranks and forks.
@@johnwestwell2241 Well, it was more tongue in cheek, but to me looks like the Madone _may_ have been resting against a pedal, and given how far the wheels are from the base, and the apparent angle of the bike nothing is really going to be cut to ribbons - and really not worth the hysterics :D
Blue light filtering specs were featured on BBC's Sliced Bread programme - believe they were deemed to be "marketing BS" rather than "the best thing since sliced bread"
I am watching this at work. I paused it at 21:09 to answer a phone call from my doctor and when I went back to unpause it I was surprised to see Ollie giving me a sexy look.
Global bike festival... Alex who? We've got an Adam on the list
Go Fred!
How about interviewing Alex’s nemesis? I’d love to hear from the next generation of cyclists.
Hahahah shall settle the battle once and for all 🥊
Press fit or threaded BB. If the threads on each side are not concentric and parallel it’s no different!

Hey guys. We love your show!!! But I’ve been trying to get the Passo Stelvio shirt for my guy (who’s a huge fan of your channel) but was told you will no longer be making the shirt! So why are you teasing us by flaunting a product I can’t get my hands on 😜 😂🤣 Sincerely Lissa & Mr. E
Sorry about that! We've got some great shirts in the pipeline don't you worry! 🙌
When can we expect Fred on the show?
To be fair, Ollie...you could probably do an entire feature on why you feel oval chainrings are rubbish, with science backing it up.
