How can you differentiate sticking through the pain for something you are miserable in from some major goals you’d want. For example, needing to make a major difficult step in your career that will bring about a lot of change to you financially but you don’t really want to be there. Everyone says to work hard and don’t give up but are you just lazy or it’s just not the right fit for you?

It sounds to me like you already know the answer to that (your intuition is stronger than you think). I think it's good to take people's advice with a grain of salt because your life is your life. If you find yourself being lazy, it's most likely not the best fit and there's something else out there that's better for you
