  • Bharatanatyam, also spelt Bharathanatyam, is a Classical Dance form of South India, said to be originated in Thanjavoor of Tamil Nadu. Bharatanatyam, It was known as "Daasiyattam" since performed by Devadasies in temples of Tamil Nadu long ago. The name 'Bharatanatyam' is derived from three basic concepts of Bhava, Raga and Thaala. The Modern Bharatanatyam was systematically regularized by well known 'Thanjavoor Brothers', Ponnayya, Chinnayya, Sivanandam and Vativelu. The dance is performed in the stage as Nritham, Nrithyam and Natyam. Bharatanatyam is based on the theories of the books 'Natyasaasthram' and 'Abhinaya Darpanam'. The dance form is based on 'Adavu' (steps) and 'Hasthamudra' (hand gestures). There are 64 basic 'Adavu' and they are divided into 9 parts, on which 'Thattadavu', 'Naatadavu', 'Kuthithumettadavu', 'Mandiadavu', 'Sarikkal' and 'Thattumettu' are very important. Communication is done through 'bhavabhinaya' (facial expression) and 'hasthamudra' (hand gestures). The performance starts with the prayers to God Ganapathi and worship of Nataraja Moorthi. The Music of Bharatanatyam is based on Carnatic Classical Music.

The first time that I saw this video I couldn't understand how this was for beginners. I've recently started to learn Bharatanatyam in a dance school and I can assure hundred percent that this is exactly for beginners! It's really difficult but I love it, and class after class I appreciate even more professional bharatanatyam dancers. I admire how the dancers like this lovely woman dance like is effortless but the path to dance so gracefully is very very hard. Thank you for the tutorial is very helpful! : )

+Anugraha Rose Joy. To be able do it fast, you should first practise doing them slowly. Practise atleast 30 minutes for 5 days before you get to do it easily in quick successions. In Barathanatyam classes they teach you these natadavu and you have to practise it repeatedly for almost 5 months to perfection before they move on.😊 hope that helps.

Thank you for this awesome tutorial...
I was just going thru this because, now doe to some health problem & obesity, i am unable to practically demostrate to my student by doing it myself, so thought of showing this to them>
    It is so very useful...
Just 1 observation & a small query - does the 8th nattaadavu not end with sitting in a muzhumandi (instead of standing straight in a natyarambha postion as shown here) & then standing up again for starting it on the other side - that is how we had learnt!
