  • In this film breakdown, we take a look at New York Giants NT Dexter Lawrence. This season, Lawrence has put up historic numbers at the nose tackle position, causing havoc nearly every snap in the middle of the Giants defensive front. Here, we analyze what makes him so effective, how the Giants have set him up for success in their scheme, and what his ceiling is as an elite pass rusher and run stopper.

Do you think Dexter Lawrence can sustain this level of play for multiple years?

Craziest thing about Dexy is his conditioning, I’m pretty sure he’s been playing at 340lbs this year yet he still moves with such suddenness and almost every game he’s playing 90% of snaps at 340lbs which is absolutely insane, it’ll be highway robbery if he doesn’t get all pro this year

Amazing what a change in scheme can do for a guy. Everyone loved Patrick Graham when he was here, the Giants wanted him to come back but he didn't like how Judge was treated so he left. Enter Wink Martindale, who insisted on sliding Dex over to NT. He went from solid DT but underwhelming 1st round pick to an absolute game wrecker. It's not only the talent around him improving either as he's been next to Leo for most of his career. Winks attacking style and that slight positional alignment have unlocked him. Somewhere Dave Gettleman is saying "I told you so" as both Dex and Danny Dimes have come into their own under this new regime. Daboll for COTY.

I've been thinking about this - I think nose tackle is the only tertiary defense position in sports. Let me explain.
Most team sports have offense and defense. That's pretty self-explanatory. But not everyone on offense is directly in charge of scoring. Rather, they get in the defense's way so that other players can score. They "defend the defenders," or play "secondary" defense. Think offensive linemen, or screens and box-outs in basketball.
Is there any other position besides nose tackle where a player's main job is to play tertiary defense? Where their primary job is to defend *against* secondary defenders, who themselves defend the other offensive players from primary defenders? Many people say a nose tackle's main role is to occupy multiple lineman so as to create mismatches. They aren't so much focused on rushing passes or tackling, they mainly clog up the o-line so that the other players can better pressure the offense. I'm interested to know if there's another position in sports like this.
