- In this lesson I do a deep dive into how I learned and practiced an old-time tune called "The Old Bunch Of Keys." It's not a lesson on how to play the tune...more a glimpse into my practice process.
A lot of what's challenging about Old-Time music is getting the bowing and rhythmic feel. I developed a practice technique called "Extracting The Rhythm" to help you practice the rhythm for this (and anything else).
I created a free guide for beginning fiddlers and violinists called "How To Play Violin - An Illustrated Beginner's Guide." Read it here: fiddlehed.co/PlayViolin

I have been trying to learn from this very book and was just listening to this tune thinking, "This book is a lot harder than circle or figure-8 bowing my way through the key notes of a tune. I wonder if Fiddlehed has anything to say about Tommy and Brad's rhythm structures." Clicked on your channel, and here's a video of you pointing at the very same book, explaining the thing I am struggling with. A couple patterns have stuck but neither Tommy nor Leftwich use the same bowing through a tune or even a single part of a tune, they weave together these patterns seamlessly and that's what makes it sound as layered and nuanced as it does. A big part of that isn't just learning the pattern but connecting them, and this is a great practice. I'm gonna try this on Reuben.

At first I thought this would be about practicing in different keys 😂
