Ben Stokes lit up north London with an extraordinary 85-ball Test century. It was the fastest Test century by an Englishman for 113 years, and the fastest by anyone at Lord's. And most importantly, it swing the match England's way.

Cook might have only scored a few runs whilst Stokes was batting, but that's just as important. Him being there gave Stokes the freedom to play his shots. That is why he was such a great.

@@karthikj6975 fastest = speed, as in elapsed time taken from at wicket to reaching a 100 runs. So you come into bat and take 70 minutes to reach a century. Fewest deliveries faced is different, that is regarding strike rate. So for instance if you have a lot of spin bowling you could attain a 100 in faster time but actually face more deliveries.
The record for fastest 100 runs scored does not necessarily equal fewest deliveries, in fact in the record books that's the case

in the 1st inning of this test match stokes missed his century by 8 runs..and in 4th inning took 3 wickets two of them are macculam and williamson in consecutive balls.

Great knock from Stokes. England are so fortunate that as a boy Stokes' family moved from NZ to Britain and young Ben learned most of his cricket in this country. He is hugely talented.
The salient point for me is that Cook is on 103 not out when Stokes begins this innings.....when Stokes hits the stroke that takes him over 100, Cook is just 119.....a partnership of approximately 116, of which Cook's contribution is 16 ?

You should see the County Championship 4-day games, there's usually about 12 people there with blankets over their legs, huddled under umbrellas sipping tea from a Thermos... there is nothing more british.

I love the way NZ play the game, hard and fair, and the way Australia like to think they play the game.
Very very similar to Botham and Tavare in the Old Trafford test in 1981, except Tavare didn't make a ton, but he stood there watching Botham as Cook watched Stokes.
