Interesting port of the game. PlayStation didn't get Quake as it was thought impossible but somehow Hammerhead managed to bring Quake II to the playstation which is no small feat considering how limited the psx hardware is compared with premium pc hardware at the time. As per usual with playstation games it uses mixed resolutions and the game part uses a native resolution of 256x240 so you may want to set your video play to a 16:9 to aspect correct this part (or download the aspect corrected version). The 50 fps (PAL) Version is being played here as its the version I own which may explain why the video length is a bit longer than other existing videos on ytube.
Sure lots of cuts had to made, but how they have been done sort of makes the playstation version unique (maybe n64 too) in it's own right with a slightly different plot and level layout compared with the pc original. This game is about half the length but still plenty long enough with only 19 levels spread over 5 missions compared with the pcs 39 levels. The levels should look familiar to players of the pc version but routes and rooms orders have changed. There are some nice lens flares from the lights when up close. I have played on Hard mode and show all secret areas.
This was also one of the few games that also supported Mouse support for looking/aiming and combines with the joypad for movement made for a very nice control system. Unfortunately for me, using a pad only to record this the controls are not so nice. Halo didn't exist yet for standardising fps controls so I am constantly fighting the controls to be able to do what I want. I do think I have improved by half way into the longplay once I got a hang of it. I would have been better to let me configure the pad buttons How I wanted then it would have made the game more enjoyable.
00:00:00 - Mission 1: Strogg outpost, Outer Base, Installation, Comm centre, Installation 2.
00:20:30 - Mission 2: Detention Area, Security complex, Guard House, Torture Chambers, Grid Control.
00:54:33 - Mission 3: Powerplant, The Reactor, Toxic Waste Dump, Pumping Station, Waste Disposal.
01:29:25 - Mission 4: Defence Command, research Lab, Gravity Booster.
01:54:30 - Mission 5: Inner Chamber, Final Showdown. -

That PS1 intro sound , soundtrack of my childhood :)
It's actually from Ground Zero
Also the design is much better than the PC version's, IMO.
When you die and go to heaven imagine hearing that sound at the entrance haha.
Sim um dos jogos que tem a melhor trilha sonora
Loved the soundtrack to this game
+Steve Ozone Far as I know Nine Inch Nails made the Soundtrack for this game! :)
+XrackProject NiN did the soundtrack for the first game. Sonic Mayhem worked on this game! :)
I thought it was sonic mayhem?
Da666ManIsBak Oh, alright! My mistake, sorry! I thought they made the soundtrack for the whole game. Good to know! Thank you! :D But honestly it still sounds like NIN... but probably its only the same style.
I honestly thought it was NiN, too, at first!
Truth be told, I prefer the original game's OST over this one. I guess I enjoyed the ambient tones much more than the 'driven' nature of this one! :)
The devs did a great job, this is an amazing version of Quake on the Ps1!
quake 2*
Wish Quake 1 was on PS1 as well...
@@George18798 same, I have a ps1 and sega saturn.
I had to get quake 1 on sega saturn because ps1 doesn't have it for some reason.
The music and the sound effects... it throws you right back into the 90's, what a great atmosphere!
Steven Hunt It's a port of the PC version which came out in 1997.
@@r_z1 And quite the technically impressive port
Without a doubt the best FPS on PSOne. An amazing port that was a technical masterpiece for the PSOne hardware.
port??? it's an entirely different game from what came out on PC!
It's a downgraded port of the PC original in terms of remaking the PC levels using the Shadow Master engine instead of ID Tech 2. Roughly half of the PC game made it to the PSOne version, hence the frequent but thankfully short loading times. What was achieved with PSOne Quake 2 was quite incredible considering the hardware was very dated by 1999. The N64 version of Quake 2 was an entirely new game with entirely new levels, but was very short, but still decent.
Sorry, it was a new engine inspired by the Shadow Master engine
The level design is completely different from the PC version and there are less levels as well!
Without a doubt the best? I have doubts.
I remember getting this for Christmas 1999 - blew me away, loved it! Was aware beforehand that there was a chunk of levels cut but this was still a great FPS on the PS1
Honestly loved this more than the pc version lol
Still have my game save on memory card from when I completed this in 1999
I never got anywhere near it (, I’m
A deficient)
This was like playing a game from the future back in the 90s. Just look at it! When I stumbled upon it as a kid I was mind blown.
what a spectacular game, one of the best if not THE best fps on psone hands down.
you will notice that on this game the textures dont warp like in other psx games! (or rather it does but way less)
this is because the game starts giving surfaces more polgons as you get closer to keep the UV coordinates aligned.
john carmack insisted that this needed to be done because he hated how the textures warped on the playstation.
this actually makes the game more heavy on the processing but the levels are simplified from the pc version a little bit to compensate i think.
In simple terms, most fps on ps1 were raycasters, but this was fully 3d
The sondtrack is brutal!
A milestone in gaming. Groundbreaking. At the time it was scary, raw and nothing like anything seen before. The ps1 version is completley different to the PC version.
Back then it was just insane port. Yeah, levels were divided on small chunks, but it was the only real problem. Rest of the game was so solid and well tuned for PS1 game. In comparison with other way more clunky and rough-around-corners games like Medal of Honor this game was a blast. Now, when I am well known about PS1 specs this port amaze me even more.
Couldn't agree more. Quake 2 por PSX is still playable to this day.
It a wizard port, It amazing how they managed to hide the texture warping. Has a lot things going on screen yet is a solid 30fps.
Delta Force Urban Warfare is another PS1 FPS game that really blew my mind visually speaking. That one could almost pass as an early ps2 game, pretty crazy if you think about it.
It's annoying people forget to mention how much more diverse this version is in comparison to the PC one despite being smaller (or maybe thanks to that)
music volume, increase, fuck yeah :D love the soundtrack
+Merlin ORKO épic
Wow the soundtrack and all the sounds, they are so freshly familiar... I was 3-4 years old last time i played this game, now i'm 24 and everything sounds like i heard it yesterday... Immediately got flashbacks from that menu music, doors opening, and the jumping moan..
Gotta admire the skill of the team who ported Quake 2 to PSX. The hardware in the console was seriously limited compared to most PCs with 3D accelerator cards.
my parents was young in 1999 and i remember hes played this to morning
This game was the epitome of cool as a teenager. Still is, actually
I remember that game having a nice multiplayer mode. :D nice
yeah, I used to play that a lot with my sister xD
taengusan Quake 2 is best played on PC for the insane graphics (for 1998) and amount of players, but the PSX version is best for playing with friends locally, as it runs and plays much better with 4 players than the fucking N64 version (with expansion pack) with 4 players XD.
Blank Blank Does the ps1 version have Bots
Opel Corsa Gang no it doesn't
After a lot of recent Gameplays with no soundtrack, I found this one. Seven years ago, with no strike from CZcams due to copyright. Keep it up!
I really like the lens flares in this version of the game
This is one of the best shooter of all time, I spend on it childrenhood and I still go back to play even as adult and even novadays dont understa how they can create something like this these ages. The graphics, sound and atmosphere is incredible.
The sound track and the graphics bring me home
I remember those old days when this game was my favorite :(
The ps1 version was so much better that the n64 version. Ps1 had parts that were cut out in the n64 port.
The N64 was mostly new content. So I find it still worth playing.
Remember one weeken' just playing this for like 8 hours in a row in the ol' days. The music got me so hype I couldn't stop playing.
So much time with friends and a PSX multitap :D
keep playing little fella, keep the long plays coming lil man
Absolutely loved this game one of the best in its time and 1 of the best soundtracks ever
+lordkramGB do you know who did Quake II's soundtrack?
The main provider was _Sonic Mayhem_, but _Bill Brown_ do some tracks, and also the main theme with Rob Zombie. And _Jer Sypult_ do just 1 theme.
You can find easily the composer(s) of videogame soundtracks by tiping the game's name followed by the word "Composer".
This was one of my childhood games back in 2008-2010
Es increíble que una ps1 pueda hacer esos graficos
This game runs at 512x240p not 256x240p. The DF Retro video shows info about this version. Looks absolutely incredible for a PS1 game and still it's a gorgeous game imo.
Much more colourful than the PC version and the graphics are really... crispy. The lighting seems to be overall a bit more moody compared to the pretty flat lighting of the PC release.
Weapons seems to have the right weight to them and is it just me or is that shotgun shooting way faster?
If it wasn't for the controls I'd probably prefer this version.
You can play this with a mouse actually
I have the entire PC series of Quake but I love this one too,I love the levels
WoL thanks for channel! i already "rewinded" all your playlist without AdBlock... its not much what i can do, but its something...
My childhood! Sometimes it's good to look back and remember the good things we experienced. Like this masterpiece. Gotta love the music. Music is something I can't play the game without.
huh, interesting that the levels are different from the PC version
+OMGCaptRaven The intro is different too They both start the same but when you see the marines flying in formation your guy gets clipped and they start swearing up a storm and your guy ends up crashing and throughout the missions this annoying robotic voice keeps saying "Computer updated!"
Yupyup I remember it being more open world at beginning not immediately in base
The crashed elevator is the first one I recognized but even wall computer wasn't there
+Gary Beltz the intro on the pc version is much more detailed? The FMV video is one of the best parts of the original game as it sets up your expectations as your shitty pod fly around all the places your due to visit game. and you get to see the giant space gun which is ace in my book...
Because the ps couldn't handle it
I was over the moon when I got this Christmas 1999! What a game! (Yeah I know there's a bunch of levels missing but it was still an incredible game on the PS1)
Finally found a good channel for old games :o
4:45 when you remember that it isn't doom
The split screen multiplayer seemed to use Quake 3 assets. The player model head looked like, 'Visor'. Audio for the weapons and Quad were also a 'mix' of QII and QIII.. I used the Playstation mouse with this!
Plz take me back man good times with this and jaming what a classic fps man great vid too
uno de los mejores en su tiempo y mi favorito que nostalgia
Quero jogar este jogo novamente adoraria se tivesse como joga lo no ps3
Awesome game, I still play it from time to time on my psx.
What an incredible port!
This port is incredible, didn't know that PSX was able to push graphics like those. It's nearly PS2 level if we make abstraction of the limited texturing capabilities and loading. (Even loading is freaking fast)
Its not the PSX. Its an Emulator which adds missing Z Buffering.
@@segaunited3855 it's PSX, you dumbfuck!
The quake 2 on psx is outstanding. Plays beautifuly. It looks 100 times better on my lenovo laptop than on this video
@@B-26354 I got a copy since my last comment to play on real hardware. It loads very fast for a PSX game. Didn't compare with the video... but it's a lot faster than the average stuff that we used to see on the console...
Oh God, the best game in the Quake saga! and his soundtrack is very good! I remember those times :)
What a game! I remember coming back from school and playing this 😄 the good old days
El mejor first person shooter de la historia
That soundtrack is just fucking amaizing. Loved it then, still love it now.
It took me a while to notice it but the cutscenes for this version of Quake 2 is straight up from Ground Zero
Descent into Cerberon, oh the goosebumps listening to this music 🎉🎉
my god, the soundtrack, its beutiful
Las mejores pistas de rock de este excelente juego
Don't remember much about this game other than thinking it had an awesome soundtrack when I originally played it.
Old memories one of the best games
MY CHILDHOOD THANKS! (:
This was one the best looking fps games on PSX.
Great game!! how did you change for analog pad in option I can't do it for some reason :(
why it use the intro of Ground Zero?
This version should be on the remaster I’m disappointed it’s not!
İ felt something amazing when İ see the intro of PS and game.Sound,video.Nostalgia
Super funny how the grunt gets squished @ 5:58 😆
i remember the good old times when i first time got ps1 console its was owsome :)
Love the game ! Love the option to play multiplayer the most, cause it was more popular way of playing it !!! I Love soundtracks ! Thanks for the run sir ! Pleasure to watch ))) Nowadays fps have a huge lack of nice music don't you think ??
Now this right here was a fuckin' A+ game back in the day, still is!
5 levels throughout the whole game? Dang....
Yeah, I was just getting into it then suddenly I'm in the endgame.
04:07 GOOD SONG
How do you know where to find a "secret location" as you go through in the Quake2 game? Thx
Never could beat this one
Tell me one game with a better soundtrack!
PSX Doom!
GTA London
Medal of Honor 1 and 2!
Half-Life!
The first quake game was better . It had NIN doing it's thing .
awesome video 😄
Some of these tracks are unfamiliar to me. Did they make a couple new songs for the port, or was this from the expansion pack?
Sarpado el soundtrack de este juego, pega bastante con el mismo también
11:28 I have so many memories of playing team deathmatch here
dam my childhood right here
I grew up playing the N64 version and i loved it
In mission 4, the portal door does not open, how did you manage to do this? I killed the boss and took the item from him
Максим Филатов ты решил эту проблему? Может дело в русской локализации? 🤔
Looks pretty damn good for PS1!
Looking ok on the ps1. But question? The super shotgun is located in a secret spot? But on the pc, it got its own secret level
prefer the PC version, but still a good port.
Pc version was much muuuuch better looking
@@jldp24 design wise, this one is more nuanced and colorful, which I appreciate more
Buckle up bois cuz Quake 2 PSX is about to be added on the Quake 2 remaster as an free add-on.
Nightdive is just based honestly...
AWESOME! Thanks a lot!
Amazing player man
Still one the best FPS ever!
Please make a Longplay from the N64 Version of this Game, Thanks!
I spend many many hours on this game! Sometime i turned sound fx off just because i wanna heard game soundtrack lol.
what are you playing this with? looks 100 times better on my lenovo laptop running psx.
27:21 And this thing right there shows a fundamental flaw of this port. The lack of "inventory" of sorts. All this damn power shield does is... It makes you lose hyperblaster (and BFG, but it's rather impractical to use on its own in most standart encounters). And, in this port, you can't just unequip it, it's stuck with you for good. Sure, you can just not pick it up, but what if you didn't know that part? At least insta-used Quad Damage and Invincibility can be used somewhat effectively, unlike the power shield.
Still, considering the limitations of a PS1, I'll admit it's a fairly decent port.
игра детства,лучшая из игр в то время на ps1
Gladiators are kinda my favorite strogg, aside from the Tank
Una hermosura de juego cuando era niño como unos 7 años tenía ahora tengo 25 :'( me costó volver a pillarlo pero se me venían recuerdos x los perros que lanzaban lazer.
A bit odd to me they used the opening and ending FMVs from the Ground Zero expansion to the PC version but I guess Hammerhead wanted to use the cutscenes that felt more "conclusive."
Most of the start is a mix of GROUND ZERO and the original PC version
The sounds of my childhood
how would you play this without the analog? :(
Que lembrança 👏👏👏👏😎
I finally found this game it took so long but I found it
Can you use a PS2 to run the game and use a common USB mouse?
Uhhhh that ps1 boot screen 😍
in pc, outer base some levels are removed?
