    Hey - I'm just commenting to say thanks - was looking at upgrading from the Hero 4 Black for running/hiking use and this was mega useful in deciding between the two for our use case. Went with the 9 mainly for quality of life advantages (water drainage and toggling hyperlapse on the hoof) rather than image quality reasons. Subbed to your channel because it looks bloody useful!

  • @LillySchwartz
    @LillySchwartz Před 3 lety +1

    Personally I can’t see much of a difference between my Hero 7 at 1080 and this Hero 9 4K footage when watching it on CZcams at 1080p. There might be a difference watching at 4K but only few people do that anyway! I thought in your comparison between the Hero 8 and the Hero 9 it looked somewhat over sharpened in the background. I definitely don’t see a need to upgrade from my Hero 7!
    Thank you for making these comparison videos and really testing it out properly in the real world. Incredibly helpful! Now Hero 10 1inch, that would be something that would make upgrading worth it!

    • @StephenJReid
      @StephenJReid  Před 3 lety

      Thanks Lilly! There’s a firmware update on the way to address Hero9 sharpness. Yeah I did notice that background seemed a bit sharper than foreground. I wondered if the new sensor and lens has a slightly different min focus distance.

    Brilliant review. Before the studio section I honestly thought the video quality was better, it just seemed to handle light and colours better. It also seemed to do a better job at keeping the horizon level - a problem I always get when using my gimbal.

    • @StephenJReid
      @StephenJReid  Před 3 lety +1

      Yeah as I said at the end I think there’s something about the video that is better, but it’s hard to quantify and in that case it means most people can’t tell. Probably due to the new sensor.

    Hey Stephen,
    Has anything changed since 4 weeks ago? Has the firmware been fixed? Is it still buggy? Etc? I’m coming from the Hero 5. Would you go with 8 or 9? Does the 8 have the preset ability?

    • @StephenJReid
      @StephenJReid  Před 3 lety

      I think there's been one firmware update since. I haven't really come across any bad bugs. Occasionally it freezes and sometimes when I use timewarp the real time audio function is out of sync. But nothing that's been a deal breaker for me so far. yeah 8 still has preset.
      If you aren't bothered about the front LCD screen or the improved battery life etc, the 8 is a great option. Overall I prefer the 9 though.

      @@Lilbizkit Ah ok. That's just a stabilisation test though. I'm showing what it can do for making actual running vlogs. I never use a chest mount, it's the worst mounting method for running. Best option is handheld, then headmounted.

    Nice review, Stephen. I get so fed up of seeing action camera reviews entirely from a studio or just walking down the street or something! A couple of things. Screen responsiveness is getting addressed in a new firmware from GoPro on precisely this coming Tuesday, along with improvements to the sharpness settings in 4K modes, which are currently way over the top. Hypersmooth is getting more improvements in Nov along with compatibility with the external mic adaptor and a new slow motion shortcut.
    Regarding picture quality differences, apart from the digital sharpness issue that will be addressed next week, there is one absolutely massive difference between the Hero9 and, well, most GoPros that came before it, including the 8. And that's that the absolutely horrific colour channel clipping that used to occur in bright lighting has been drastically improved. A lot of shots I took with the 8 had some butt ugly colour clipping on the highly saturated blues of my kayak that couldn't be corrected in post. You can get a similar result by pointing your GoPro at a highly saturated bright red or blue outdoor waterproof jacket in very strong sunshine and look at how the highlights clip. It isn't quite as bad in flat mode, but it still used to happen. On the 9 however, some of the colour channels can still clip when presented with extremely highly saturated colours, but it does so in a much more natural way so it doesn't actually stand to ruin the shot like it did with previous cameras.
    On the wind noise front I have come across a few issues. At the moment I am using windjammers over the mics, which I have literally sewn into one of GoPro's silicon protector cases. This is the only way I can get the things to stay on given that most of what I do is watersports. But at the same time I have to turn all processing off. This is because for some reason if you leave the wind filter setting to on or to auto, once the camera is dunked into water and comes out again, the sound is all muffled for a long while afterwards. I thought at first that this was due to the mics getting clogged up with water. But it isn't the case. If you turn the wind processing off completely this issue doesn't exist. So for anyone that does watersports and finds the sound muffled after the camera takes a dunking, I'd recommend getting the silicon case cover and sewing the Rycote micro windjammers to it so they stay on when wet and for now turning all wind processing off. Additionally I have been giving the windjammers a coating of Nikwax water repellent to help prevent them getting too sodden.
    That was more than a couple of things, sorry!

      @StephenJReid  Před 3 lety +1

      Haha thanks Simon! Definitely looking forward to the updates and good points on the image quality. It’s definitely better in tricky lighting I think.
      I was going to be making my wind noise video today. But it’s not windy 😂 That’s a great idea with the silicone cover. Might try that. Allow if it’s grippy, it might just snag in my running pack.
