If Ray Evernham is in the hall of fame with 47 wins and 3 championships then Kirk Shelmerdine needs to be in the hall of fame with 46 wins and 4 championships.
The King said it best. Nascar is no longer a sport but a show, so personality & popularity wins the day. As much as Ray is genius, Krk worked with 2nd or 3rd tier products to help Sr., win, no matter how talented Sr., was.
He's been nominated for induction and will likely be inducted eventually.
Ray Evernham was also a race winning owner, I think that's what pushes him over the edge.
@@neonbodystyle He was, but it was not in Winston or Busch. Ray is one of the GOAT CC, but KS does should have been in the there already.
Dale yeah
Congrats to Kirk on getting into the NASCAR Hall Of Fame!!!
I love to see the pride on JRs face, when he hears the stories about "Dad".
its not just Jrs face, most fans light up when they hear these stories too!
@@warrenmichael918 everybody is supposed to feel that way about their dad no matter what he does for a living .. well. i mean most people should.. i know i do
Mee too it somehow makes me feel better
One of, if not the most underrated crew chief in NASCAR history. Thanks again, Dale. And thank you, Mr. Shelmerdine.
Your opening statement describes exactly why fans loved your Dad. To a tee. Perfect, just perfect.
Imagine hearing Dale saying "stay on that gas boy!" hahaha. How cool. Wish there was a recording of that.
Hows that f_cking neck feeling about now?
Kirk Shelmerdine deserves to be a H.O.F.er!
For Kirk to say, why he stepped away without putting it into these exact words, "I couldn't give the team what they needed to win" and to admit that he didn't know what to do to make the cars better takes a lot of guts. Kirk was definitely the master of building cars that ran on the bias ply tire, but when NASCAR was graduating to run the radials at every track, I feel like Kirk didn't want to change his ways. But seriously... What a guy and Crew chief and he was a great race car driver too.
I agree on what your saying Tre
Good for him to admit his own shortcomings. He probably could’ve stuck around a few more years in a different role, hung out with Larry McReynolds and Andy Petree and would probably be a high end crew chief today.
Why is this man NOT in the HOF?? Great clip. Ton of respect for Kirk.
Shelmerdine and Earnhardt were a tough duo to beat. They were good everywhere and every week.
Awesome. With Kirk here these were the glory days. I was a rabid fan in those days and was until he died. NASCAR for me has now faded into a memory. I do love catching this podcast though because of guests like this.
You are exactly right!
100% agree. NASCAR died to me the after the Daytona 500 in 2001. Dale was NASCAR to me.
The story about the neck was amazing. Dale was a genius.
Got a lot of respect for Kirk Shelmerdine. Really impressed with Kirk's insights. -"know when to fold 'em"
I could listen to this interview for days. It's hard to find someone to talk about Dale Sr. and not sensationalized every story. You could tell from his voice he loved Dale and also the passion he had for what he did.
How many men have a job at the top of a success story and fold up shop as soon as they know they have reached the end of their skill set? Not many. Most ride UT out til they have exhausted themselves and their supporters. Tip of the hat to you Sir
"Where you beat them at, is before you ever show up!" Well said. So True
One word, LOYALTY!!!
Kirk Shelmerdine.........wow......that’s a name that I haven’t heard in a long time. I just started getting into NASCAR in ‘92, when Kirk was getting out. Love seeing these guys that are a blast from the past!
Ran his own team for a long time after
All of Dale Junior downloads are freaking awesome!!! Thank you Junior for keeping Nascar alive.
Best podcast out there! I was sad the day I heard jr was retiring as a driver. But now I couldn’t be happier for myself but more for Dale. He’s having so much fun with podcast and broadcasting it’s nice to see him happy. I believe the pressure of all his fans made him a very unhappy person sometimes.
We need stories from Chocolate Myers.
Heck yeah, great idea
Yes great idea
I would LOVE to hear some stories from Chocolate Myers!!!!
Oh...
That would be epic!
Terresa would probably never allow him to be on the podcast
Dale and Mike are a great interview team. Always cool to see whose next.
I hear people giving Mike a hard time in the comments on other videos and I don't get it. There's been several times when I wanted to know more on a topic and Mike asks the important follow up that gives the story the context it needs. I think he makes the podcast much better.
You guys are killing it with your guests!
This is my fav podcast now by far. I could listen to these older guys talk about 70's-90's NASCAR, especially Sr., all day.
@8:24 "i wood dent of sold out like that" he got my respect from now on !!
Minute 9:09 look how excited dale gets, I love watching these pod cast.
@Daniel Johnston he ACTUALLY loves bowman field raceway and go kart. Racing also...
Dale - need more from the “older” guys! Love to hear from Mark Martin, or Geoff Bodine, or Lake Speed, or Morgan Shepherd.
Rusty Wallace is on next week
I can't agree more. Dale Jr. is using his platform to immortalize the guys that many of the new fans may have never heard of.
@@bwthor this is what nascar should be doing--- you go dale!!!!!
Rick Mast
I'm all ears when Mark talks. Smart man. Thats why he was my driver from the get-go. Great idea!
Dale & Mike- It would be do great if you could talk about Lloyd Ruby. That cowboy hat, his calm demeanor, how great he was. When I was a small kid watching NASCAR he was my favorite
Man, I'm a late-comer to NASCAR and I feel like I missed all the best parts of the sport.
Welcome Sage and maybe you have missed alot but maybe the best is to come?...I've been into Racing since I was born...LOL Not my fault but Daddy and Uncle raced so Every day involved around racing. Hope Racing can become racing once again with the likes of Joey logano bouncing Truex out for the win is what is needed in this sport, Ya, sorry to say but the ole adig of "Lead, Follow or get the F**k out of the way" is Nascar in a nutshell. .... Bring it back!, And don't count yellow flag laps within 50 laps to go dammit!
You did
You just missed the part of the timeline where nascar got really big. In the future, it'll probably go through another growth spurt and it'll be really fun again. I only caught the end of it. But I remember being about 7 when the big clunkers came to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It was huge. Really fun, but it's still a fun sport. Don't let people talk you out of enjoying it RIGHT NOW.
Bill Carroll
John Schwindt
Well it don’t matter how “big” it is if the racing sucks and selfish whiners like Logano are the only ‘color’ the sport has in it.
What made those old days so good was people did it, not computers, fuel mileage, and managers.
Racing was a spectacle; guys showed up and went at it broke or not, but now it’s an advertising format first and foremost. The goal is money and viewers.
I wasn’t a Sr. fan but he made it colorful, right or wrong. He wanted to win, sure, and he wrecked himself and others ON HIS WAY TO A WIN. Nowadays they wreck people just so they CAN win. It sucks.
Indeed you did
This show is pure gold
These interviews are great, Jr! Awesome, Kirk!
Another great Dale story. Imagine Dale as your spotter, that is golden. Thanks for sharing. By the way, you were a great crew chief.
Kirk Shelmerdine and the Flying Aces....I had that poster up in my garage for years.
I am loving the guests this year
So there are Dale Jr's dads friends?
I stopped following NASCAR after that day in 2001. The recent chats have really put a small on my face.
Love his loyalty
Kirk, one of NASCAR's greatest Crew chiefs. Hes definitely in my top 5 behind Dale Inman, Ray Evernham, and Chad Knaus.
that was a hot day to watch the 600 that was the last daylight race to see dale win was badass
That has to be one of the top stories of all time. I don't think there is a guy out there that wouldn't have his ass pucker with Dale spotting for you. I would love to hear what he was saying for that race. Awesome.
How this guy is not in the hall of fame absolutely blows my mind considering the guys whongotnin this year........and no disrespect to them but this man was the best crew chief for almost a decade
this is such a great series. its great to listen to junior now that he has matured and some of the others talk about the years past. way better entertainment than any nascar stuff on tv now.
Keeps getting better and better. Awesome talk with Kirk Shelmerdine. Would love to see some other connections with Jr.’s dad on the show. Love the old stories. How about Richard Childress, Chocolate Myers, and Andy Petree. Would also love to see The Rooster on the show
I happened to see that race and Kurt was running well. I remember he was talking about it afterwards saying.he told Dale the car was fine untill someone got close behind him taking the air off the spoiler then it got really loose. Dale calmly told Kurt " just drive off and leave them " .
I actually did a search to see if Jr had a podcast with Shelmerdine as his guest and was pleased when I found this because those races were where I became the Earnhardt fan I was. I really miss those times. Every Sunday a fair crowd showed up with something to put on the grill or go with it . The only exceptions were Darlington , the Rock and Charlotte, tracks just down the road and we usually were there. Ahhh the good Ole days.
Pure GOLD.
I was there back in the day when boy scouts got free tickets and my grandparents took me I cheered for Kurt rocking the #3
Frank honesty. Every man needs to recognize when it’s time to leave the party.
I am a huge Earnhardt fan I have watched this video many times it’s better ever time
Sooooo awesome hearing this and Dale as a spotter! What? Classic incorporated! Dale Jr. loved you driving (still love you in iRacing) and what you are doing now with your show is filling a huge void for us fans! Thank you and Mike for making the world's greatest sport even more amazing!
You have them beat before you get to the track. That is great
Kirk is a good guy and a outstanding crew chief
Best channel that has anything to do with nascar including most races
Awesome Bill, Schrader , Any drivers from the past would be great. Love the podcast format !
This is awesome. Until you hear stories from behind the scenes, you never understand exactly the people and their personalities, what makes them tick. Love it, Agree with some of the other comment. would love to hear from Chocolate and MM.
I really wish dale sr would have made it to our current time in history, him and jr having a sit down on his podcast would easily be one of the most viewed podcast in history. Earnhardt was a man’s man, I’m proud to say I named my son after him. You couldn’t help but respect the number 3
Shouldnt have pushed the smart people out of your life. I love Dale more then most, he killed himself... the truth can be hard and i dont enjoy typing this... but Dale Sr. killed himself whether he or his fans get it or not.
Tell em Dale Jr... DAMN
I own that car he drove.. pretty cool
Piece of history. 🙏
If I remember right, Kirk had told Dale the aero coupe Montes were a better car than the Luninas and that’s what Kirk drove? It’s been around 30 years now, but it had the same black paint scheme but the number was changed?
Awesome stories of the good times! Keep the interviews coming @Dalejr.
Love theses stories
Awesome content!! Great hearing stories from NASCAR's past!
I love these stories.
I bet Kirk has some amazing behind the scenes and never discussed stories...I would love to hear what is in his memory bank unfiltered and raw!!!
Amazing crew chief..💎
When He retired..I retired. Best race I ever saw was Talladega..Jr ran in first Micheal Waltrip second. Loved seeing them two run together especially on Dega!
Really enjoyed this emotionally charged interview... Nice!!
Looking forward to Ron Hornaday jr
You can really see the emotion in his body language
That was a awesome interview.
This one and Park are my favorites. How’s that neck and red headed stepchild 😂
Interviews are killin it. Your channel will grow quick. Keep it up.
This was so good!
Great stories... thanks
These are golden
Kirk needs to be in the hall of Fame
This video is gold
Great stuff love hearing stories about ur dad,
Thank you for this. As a fan during those times I had never heard Kirk relate why he stepped away.
I think he left to restart his own driving career. Kirk wound up running some cup races in the 2002-2006 era
a real racer thanks kirk
I Love these shows!!!!
Great interview
Another great interview - really enjoyed this!! As 2 guys who had multiple run ins with your Dad, I'll echo some previous comments and beg for interviews with Geoff Bodine and Ricky Rudd!!
Fantastic!
Just love fox nascar and nfl dale sr was such a unique guy my family say I’m unique and when see something unique or invention they gift me and show me. I just love my 2 children time home educating them both was country best. It’s never the cost their art hangs in my rooms and walls.
Awesome interview! Never knew who Kirk was but great stories and you can see the emotion about the past in his eyes. Keep it up yall!
That's the interviews that will make the best videos,,, awesome
That was one of my favorites to watch. So sincere. Was he getting choked up when he was talking about leaving the team?
Maybe I'm having a "senior moment," but I seem to recall an "alliance" of sorts many years ago. Was it called "R.A.D." ??? RCR, Andy Petree Racing and DEI got their heads together on the superspeedway stuff? Am I remembering this right? If I am I recall it leading to some awful dominating plate track races for those three teams for several years. I'd love to see Richard Childress, Andy Petree and someone that was with DEI back then come one the show and talk about those "glory days" of plate track dominance!
those Senior stories are just the best
I would like to see dale do a interview with Jeff Hammond
so good.
Kirk is great guy! He know how to tell a good story for sure. Can you invite some of the "old" guys ? Mark Martin or Sterlin Marlin ? i would love to see Kenseth or McMurray also. Great job Jr, keep it up!
I remember back in the day, after the race when questioned about an incident. The drivers would shrug it off as " just one of those racing deals" or my favorite, " rubbing is racing".
it's very rare these days.
Love eating breadfast and seeing this videos
I love your podcasts I love car racing. Can you please do longer podcasts 2.5 to 4 hours long. The longer ones you can go over more
Awesome..insight... you can’t get this anywhere else..I’m a jersey guy.. if Ray can be in the hof..so can Kirk!
Love it
Dale Earnhardt was truly the best Cup driver of all time no doubt Jr. would've been a multi time Cup champion had he not passed away from his crash at Daytona in 2001.
I f*cking love this!!!
SHRADER!! Get him on!!
YES
and it was a moving show
Dale did good with young crew chiefs like Kirk and Doug Richert
Chocolate Myers has been on this podcast, called: chocolate myers, nascar beginnings. Great stories
Bill Elliott. Not only do i miss that Dawsonville drawl- I gotta hear some stories.
Earnhardt was the Oakland Raiders of NASCAR. I was as big a fan of the #3 as I was the bump and run.
