One of the guys hanging out with Mick Jagger on the stoop is Reggae legend Peter Tosh. And that building is supposedly the same building used for the cover of Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti album. And the saxophone lines are played by legendary musician Sonny Rollins. The Stones dropped their Tattoo You album when I was in ninth grade. My buddies and I played the hell out of that record back when -- "Start Me Up", "Waiting On A Friend", "Hang Fire", "Slave", and "Little T&A" round out a great album.
I so love learning new stuff about my “oldies”!
I was 18 when that album came out and had a friend who covered Start Me Up in their band. They actually did a pretty good job on it. Another friend and I used to roadie for them just to get into the Hollywood clubs in the early 80's.
I think I knew all of that at one point, but I sure did forget it. Great info!
Some Girls, Emotional Rescue and Tattoo You is probably my favorite period of the Stones.
That is the building from Physical Graffiti, 96 and 98 St. Mark's Place in the East Village. Tattoo You is a fantastic album, I recently found a near perfect original Robert Ludwig mastered copy in the vinyl bins at a local shop for $14. Sounds amazing!

I love this Stones tune. Keith's cute in this.
The sax player is none other than great Sonny Rollins. He is one of the greatest jazz sax players of all time.
Truth! Sonny's sax elevates this song to the highest heights.
The great Sonny Rollins asked the Stones what he should play , ultimately he played the solo based on the way Mick Jagger was dancing in the studio to the track
The Saxophone Colossus himself
amazing !
@007ndc I think my favorite story about this is one that Mick tells. They were so intimidated by the towering reputation of Sonny that they were embarrassed to ask him and thought he would refuse.
That sax solo tho....Fun Wikipedia fact: Jagger said in 1985:
"I had a lot of trepidation about working with Sonny Rollins. This guy's a giant of the saxophone. Charlie said, 'He's never going to want to play on a Rolling Stones record!' I said, 'Yes he is going to want to.' And he did and he was wonderful
Since Charlie was also. JAZZ man, drummed in his own band, when time away from the Stones, I wish we could hear out-takes of those two playing, or talking together. 😎
That saxophone gives chills ❤
I’ve never been a huge Stones fan. But this song always gets me.
same here
The Stones are like the Beatles, each song is a new trip.
April 28, 2024 - Stones tour in Houston Jagger is now 80. If you are going to see the Stones, time is now.
Yup, they're coming near me and this time gonna get hit it. Last time I saw them was Steel Wheels tour!
Lol. People have been saying that for 30 years. These dudes just don't quit. Crazy.
They said it in 1982, have to see the Stones in Rotterdam it will probably the last one. LOL.@@jxchamb
he's still cool and laid back at 80!.
First of all, the song is a favorite of mine. But as a video, wow! So simple yet so effective. Filmed on the lower east side in New York City. I just love the setting, with New Yorkers who just happen to be standing around and going about their day. Watch the video again and you'll see some of the people staring and wondering, "Say, isn't that...KEITH RICHARDS?!" (At one point he even kind of chuckles at being recognized.) Also, imagine being in a bar and some guys get up to start playing, and it's the freakin' Rolling Stones. I know it's just made up for the sake of the video, but what a fantasy!
Long time ago, a pro musician friend of mine went to a little cub in Austin featuring Live music. The place was packed but he kept catching a glimpse in the mirror of the guy at the bar next to him, and thought he looked like Jagger, but the dude was wearing a hat like the one in this video and purposely hiding his face and talking to the woman he was with. Finally, he caught a full profile of him as he turned to focus on his drink. My friend says, "Mick?" and Jagger looks at him, smiles, and gives him the 'ssshhhh', then recognizes him since they jammed together years earlier - "How you doin', mate?" and they find out they both came to town to see the same band. Anyway, my friend's girlfriend was totally impressed.
I sat next to a guy on a recent flight from Italy to London...got talking ... he'd been to Mick Jagger's 80th birthday party ! Showed me all the photos on his phone .... I was so jealous , he said Mick was incredibly charismatic. How cool it would be to hang out with him 😊 as Jay says : you'd always have fun
That outro is legendary. The sax is so great.
A gem from one of the GOATS! A great vibe.
Jay & Amber, you'll love their "Shattered"!!! Saw them in concert 1997.
edit- thats reggae artist Peter Tosh on the stoop with Mick. They did a song together "(You Gotta Walk) Don't Look Back !!
The apartment building they're sitting in front of us was used for Led Zepplin's Physical Graffiti album
Good call, that’s exactly what I was going to say..
I feel like Kevin in “Home Alone”. YES!! This is one of my favorite Rolling Stones songs! Keith Richards looks and acts so chill in the video for this song. It’s the story of one cool dude waiting on his cool friend to show up. Awesome. ❤️
...the fantastic line of "A smile relieves a heart that grieves..." Simple but so true! This is in my Top 5 Rolling Stones songs, for sure.
"Don't need a whore, I don't need no booze, don't need a virgin priest". Some of the words are difficult to understand. Mick does that, a LOT
So true!
An absolute classic in a catalog of them
Love this old video!! My favorite Stones song has always been “Ruby Tuesday”. Loved it as a young kid and love it still as a 65 year old kid! 😉😁
The building they are sitting in front of in the beginning is in Manhattan's, East Village. It is the same building that is on the cover of Led Zeppelin's Physical Grafitti album. My niece lived there for about 4 months, but before I could get to visit her, she decided to move to Chicago. Very disappointed for me, but on the bright side, she met her husband in Chicago! ❤
I adore this song ❤
One of my favorites boy has swag timeless music Stones forever forever 🎉🎉❤
From the very moment I heard the Rolling Stones way back in the 60s it always puts a smile to my face, who else can say that?
My favorite Rolling Stones song and one of my favorite songs ever!
The Rolling Stones is my favorite band! This is a great song! I became a true fan when this album came out in 1981 and they did their North American Tour.
Loved your reaction! Peter Tosh (the other charismatic man in the music video) was a pioneer of reggae music and the Rastafari movement. He was a former member of the Wailers. His biggest hit was the duet with Mick Jagger "(You Gotta Walk) Don't Look Back" from the late '70s. You can put that one on your list too. 😊 Thank you!
This is one of my all-time favorite Rolling Stones songs. Love the video too.
I've always loved this song, great to chill out to
I'm hoping they will react to Gimme Shelter soon, the opening of that song always gives me chills
I have been following the Keith Richards regimen for longevity for 40 years. 🙂
The guy is made of tough stuff
Lol me too
One of my favorites. I wasn’t attracted by the Stones until the era of this song. Now I am sold on all of it.
The Rolling Stones on October 20th released their first studio album of all new material in 18 years and it’s as good as anything they have done in 40 plus years and will be remembered as their last classic album. It’s called Hackney Diamonds and you must given it a good hard listen as it has the Stones style and formula and the sound is very modern with a young 30 something year old producer by the name of Andrew Watt. Two standouts for me at the moment are the Rocker called Whole Wide World and a lyrically and heartbreakingly ballad called Depending On You which is beautiful and brilliant.
yea its an absolutley brilliant album cant think of another rock band that could make a track like sweet sounds of heaven
A stone cold groove. The vibe, the vocals, the sax! Plenty cool. Never want it to end.
I love The Stones and I love Mick Jagger! This is one of my favorite Rolling Stones tune! ❤❤
This is one of my favorite Stones songs. The beauty of friendship comes through. So glad you have heard it!!!
One of my favorite Stones songs. That vocal melody in the background and that fire sax combine to give this song that New York City vibe. Love it!
Don't forget Keith, Charlie, Bill & Ronnie when thinking of The Rolling Stones. The root of many of their song come from Keith.
And Keith will always be the ultimate rock star.
Great choice. I’m from New York City and seeing that old neighborhood brings back a lot of memories. The song “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking“ is a stand out that I highly recommend. It’s truly one of the best Rolling Stone jams ever and I believe it was all done on one take. When you hear it, you’ll be stunned by the musicianship and vocals by Mick.
🕊❤️🎼
One of my favorite Stones songs! That sax just carries you away. This video always reminds me of the early days of MTV... when I was in my early 20s and life was easy and simple just hanging with friends.
A smile relieves a heart that grieves. A very relevant bar when you live as long as cats from my generation.
They have got to be the greatest Band ever
SAW STONES ON MY 50TH BIRTHDAY!!! THEY PLAYED THREE HOURS!!! AND MICK NEVER STOPPED ROCKIN' TILL HE SAT ON STOOL AND SANG "ANGIE"👍👍👍👍👍❤❤❤❤❤👍👍👍
Was this Knebworth '76 Cynthia? I was there too. They played almost 3 hours their longest live show ever got home at 6 in the morning 🕺🔥💎
One of the coolest vids The Stones ever did. Remember watching it on MTV when it first played- like it was yesterday👍
Mick is fun to watch live. Never stops and it’s funny to watch him switch between his dozen or so moves.
you are not the only one whit (mixed emotions ) a great one,,,,
Keith and Ronny are just brilliant. There playing together in all their songs is amazing.
A classic song about friendship.
BTW, “Walk and Don’t Look Back” is a great collaboration with Jagger & Peter Tosh.
Once you hear that Mick looks like Don Knotts in this video, you can never unsee it!😂
I've never been a very big Stones fan.The jazz/ R&B influence is great! I love this one. I was 11 almost 12 when this came out and I loved it! ❣️
This has always been one of my Top 5 Stones tunes
❤❤ You two really need to experience the joy of watching and hearing Mick and Bette Midler sing "Beast of burden" ❤❤❤
Grew up with the Stones......great times ....love the meaning of this waiting on a friend
This has always been one of my favorite RS songs! It's So Chill!! The music reminds me of, not country, but westerns with a Tex/Mex feel. And that sax!!! Love it!
The Stones … longest lasting and a most fabulous band.
Even though I never cared too much for Mick Jagger, I always loved this hit by the Rolling Stones. That's Jazz Great Sonny Rollins on Tenor Sax.
Mick Jagger has charisma and all the moves. The Stones had great band members as well.
I really think this is one of my top ten Rolling Stones hits, with Wild Horses, Jumping Jack Flash, Tumbling Dice, and their ear!y R&B albums.
This was an EXCELLENT choice for a reaction video. Thanks!
"Fool To Cry" is a very good slow song too... 🔥🔥🔥
My favorite song from the Stones !
I went to his farewell concert at the orange bowl in I think 1980 and I was amazed at how much energy he had I was exhausted watching him. I was 22.Almost 44 years later he’s still at it.
You may not have noticed in the video but the building stoop where this video was shot is the same building (98 St. Mark's Place) in NYC that was featured on the cover of Led Zeppelin's great Physical Graffiti album.
Their latest album just released a few weeks ago, "Hackney Diamonds" is one of their best albums in many years.
Their best since "Some Girls."
and still no 1 in the album charts@@donaldkennedy9573
❤ (Class of 71)❤"May I have this Dance"😊
Mick's not waitin' on a lady, he's just waitin' on Keith Richards. And that's a LOT more trouble than any lady ;) I was taken aback when I first heard this song, and then the more I listened to it the more a loved it.
Congratulations you finally got to one of my favorite Stones Songs!
LOVED the Tattoo You album!! A LOT of bangers on it!!! No Use In Crying, Little T&A, Black Limousine, Hang Fire, Neighbours, Slave, and Start Me Up!! ALL GREAT TUNES!! (Gosh - I just realized I named almost the whole album - and, the others are GREAT, TOO! :) HUGS!
Now Do Paul Simon's Late In The Evening. You'll love that vibe too. Great horn section.
Yes, please!
Yep...keep waiting for Kodachrome as well.
"Tattoo You" had some great tunes, but it was this last track on side two that had me gobsmacked, and it was all due to that sax. Sonny Rollins is a straight up treasure and every bit the "Saxophone Colossus". The Stones always delivered the mail, but getting Sonny, well that was brilliant.
You will LOVE Saint of Me.......love it. a little known hidden gem.
My favourite Stones song.
One of the best Stones track of all time ❤️
Cool trivia - it was originally recorded in 1972 for album Goats Head Soup, but didn’t make the cut!
Gotta love Mick & Keith just chillin’ on the block
One of their best, IMHO.
Next Stones song should be "Girl with Far Away Eyes" the official promo video. In it Mick is sitting at the keyboard, and he couldn't be more entertaining if he tried!!!!
They're comin' here to Vancouver July 2024...so looking forward to their concert especially at 63....'bout time Mick...😉🎤
'Waiting On A Friend' was actually the first video I saw on MTV, after it had been on the air for only about a week back in August of 1981.
one of my favorite songs of theirs
Oh yeah the Rolling Stones 👅
Also the new Stones album has a great punk rock sounding song called Bite My Head Off with none other than Paul McCartney playing a heavy sounding fuzz bass.
My favorite Stones song!
Spot on. Sometimes you have to just kick it with your friends sometimes.
Now you’re talking! One of my favorite Stones songs. It’s definitely the same building that’s on Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti album-the iconic St. Mark’s Place in Greenwich Village in Manhattan. The street is a spectacle for people watching while waiting on a friend.
I was 18 when this album was released. This is my favorite songs on this album. Listen to Black Limousines off this album as well.
Greatest Rock N Roll Band ever 🤘
Rolling Stones "ANYBODY SEEN MY BABY" (Angelina Jolie is the girl in the video). Great song! ❤
as a late bloomer to the stones music I have come to admire their outros. songs like this one, Has anybody seen my baby or Time waits for no one, are my favs bacause of the outro.
My favorite Stones song
This has been my shit ever since I was 10 yo in 1981. Thar guitar riff sets the stage so cool.
Thru and Thru is a really good Stones song
My favourite rolling stones song
Miss those days. I had forgotten about this video. It's right on the money for the times
Funny, back then when we watched this video, we didn't say look they are hanging with some black guys. It was just guys hanging out.
Times have really changed.
Love watching Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts laughing it up in the background.
As an older person, this one hits me in the feels
Just FYI, they are singing on a familiar location...if you are a Led Zeppelin fan.
Yes, the bulding they are singing in front of is the same as the one used on the Cover of Physical Graffiti. :)
So...two reasons for me to love this song :)
Have seen The Stones, twice in concert. They're still kicking' . One of the few after so many years. Thanks for the smile.
One of my favorites by them
It's a beautiful song.
My fav Stones tune. Thanks
Always loved it.. never will forget this video and start me up on mtv the first year it was on… I was 7 and those videos made me a lifelong stones fan
I would always play this for friends when I lived in San Francisco.
They are....just too cool for School 🤗❣️🔥
the building where he's standing in the doorway is also on the cover of Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti album
Jazz legend Sonny Rollins on the saxophone.
Hanging out with the brothers? That’s Legendary Peter Tosh
And, as it turns out, all his friends he picks up along the way turn out to be members of a band. Cool.
