- How do you recognize the sounds of spoken language? How do we
take apart the words that we speak? Learn more about this skill and tips to
improve phonological awareness in kids.
Phonological awareness is a skill that lets us recognize the sounds of spoken
language. In this video, reading expert Margie Gillis breaks down phonological
awareness in kids and how you can help your child develop these skills.
Phonological awareness is all about how kids learn and hear sounds, according to
Margie. You can rhyme words, count syllables, or highlight how sounds can repeat
themselves. Watch as Margie walks through how we can break sentences down
into words, words into syllables, and syllables into sounds.

every educational institute of higher learning should include this video as part of an introduction to Phonological Awareness training course(s). Thank you so much for the simplicity of it...that's a great skill you have to take something soooo dynamic and explain it in such a simple and fundamental way.🙌💐👍
Thanks SO MUCH for your simple clear explanations with great examples!
Interesting. Now I know more about phonological awareness.
Excellent content and clear presentation / explanation. Suggestion: Re-edit it and turn down the background music. It would make it easier for some to focus on what is being said.
Hi Amy Vorwaller, Thank you for the suggestion. We will pass it along to the editorial team.
Great clarification!
A simplistic view, very clear examples, easy to follow, thankyou

What is blending phonological awareness?
Is this to say that phonemic awareness is one component of phonological awareness?
Hi Neighbor to Neighbor, Thanks for your question. Phonemic awareness is recognition of the individual sounds (called phonemes) in a word. For example, the word cat is made up of three phonemes /k/, /æ/, and /t/. When students are asked to find the smallest unit of sound in a word, they are working on phonemic awareness. The article "What is Phonological Awareness" u.org/3v3TLiW expands on this video and explains it in more detail including how phonemic awareness fits in.
We hope this helps.

@@UnderstoodOrg Thank you for the prompt reply. But if this is a place where I can be honest with my feelings, I have to let you know that the answer misses my point. I asked a yes or no question regarding the relationship between two closely connected concepts, phonemic awareness and phonological awareness. Your answer repeated what is well covered in the video and well understood by me, yet fails to address my question head on. So I won’t go so far as to say you insulted my intelligence, but also would’t pretend to be happy with your reply. Still, the promptness in your reply is much appreciated.
Hi again Neighbor to Neighbor,
We certainly were not trying to insult your intelligence, but rather to help clarify the answer if not for you then for anyone else reading the comments. In short, yes, phonemic awareness is one component of phonological awareness.
Thanks for your feedback. We are always striving to improve and we can only do so with help from devoted followers like yourself.

Phonemic awareness is only one part of phonological development. The broader term encompasses so much then just the sound or phoneme.. It is a larger concept and so the video is misleading. Phonological development goes beyond sounds (phonemes). It also encompasses spelling, phonics, etc.
Hi Dr. Jennifer. Thank you for your comment. We sent this to our expert, Dr. Andy Kahn, and here's what he has to say: This video certainly does provide a simplified explanation of phonological awareness. The goal of this short video was to provide a reasonable overview of the concept since the topic could be the focus of an entire college course. We appreciate comments like yours since it shows us the need to link these shorter summary videos with more detailed options that can truly cover the breadth and depth of the topic. Thank you for your comment.
