I agree with his super-scholarly theoretical exposition behind this music, but I'm just not feeling it from the song. Connection is with the heart, and years ago I used to feel joy whenever I heard him on the radio at the mall (while shopping for clothes lol). I could sense his telepathical powers throughout every city. And most of all, he looked totally radiant. Nowadays he just looks and feels hostile, no matter how much I still want to be that "Listener" who dreams and dances away. And the music honestly sucks. Freddie's "Hot Space" era had some riffs at least.
Also, I dislike how far from reality he's gone. I mean it's no longer "Let's take on the world through the sheer power of our imagination" - now it's "Let's go back to hedonistic lifestyles that used to be popular decades ago, as if all were privileged rich people who got traumatized in childhood and never received any therapy for it." Is there no climate change where he lives? Is there no Gaza or Ukraine, or persecution of queer people at an all-time high? Is hedonism really going to magically solve these problems? Because really, as said, I believe in escapism, but this music fails to be that. I also believe in sex positivity, but such a narrow definition of it is exclusionary. So why don't we call this what it is, selling out.
