Ukraine’s struggle to find new men for front line | BBC News

  • Almost two years into Russia's full-scale invasion, there are no longer volunteers on Ukraine’s front line.
Most of those who wanted to fight at the start of the war are either dead, injured or still stuck at the front waiting to be relieved by new recruits.
Ukraine’s goal of liberating its territory hasn’t changed, but the price it's having to pay is rising all the time, the BBC’s Eastern Europe correspondent reports.

Officially even Ukrainian media outlets admit that Johnson spoiled the chance for peace for Ukraine. Boris Johnson has Ukrainian blood on his hands.
The agreement achieved in Stambul in 2022 gave Ukraine a hundred times better conditions than Ukraine can get now. There is a question if Ukraine will cease to exist.
in 2022 the Russians agreed to withdraw from all territories taken in 2022. Donbas was to be a part of Ukraine. Only Krimea and joining NATO were Russians' non-negotiable conditions. The rest was meant in favour of Ukraine. Now Ukraine is in ruins, millions fled abroad, thousands upon thousands are dead or cripple, and industry is in the rubble
This is Boris Johnson who made the Ukrainian catastrophe. Where is he now? I he hiding like a rat?

No no it was maybe not a lie, i heard recently Ukraine army is about 600 000 right now more or less like Russia (in Ukraine indeed). That is not impossible at all that Ukraine suffered 200k KIA and 200K crippled (like this guy int he interwiew) to be honest there's also some crippled who get back to the fight with prosthestis. In a recent interwiew they also said there is 60K women actually in Ukraine army and it was like10% of all soldiers, so that totally match. This would means Ukraine lose 200K men (100K KIA and 100k crippled) a year and that next year if they can't replace those 200K with the newest age class because too many peoples have flee the country it will become very complicated. 100K KIA a year for Ukraine is totally realistic it is 275KIA/DAY inaverage considering the difference in artillery and airsuperiortiy that Russia have: it's actually not surprising at all. This war is between 50-500 KIA a day, as an exemple Bhakmut for Ukraine was in the 300KIA/day for Ukraine and the "counter offensive" reach 500 KIA/day the worst days. From Ukrainian sodliers testimonies infrench tv report Adiivka losses were worse than Bhakmut. Next year will start to be very very hard for Ukraine. In my opinion Russian losses have always been lower except the two first month of the invasion, i think all in all Russians losses are in the 100K KIA in two years and many of thoses were inmates or foreign mercenaries or troops from DPR&LPR who were people already at war since 2014: that's in the 140KIA/day in average for Russia considering 70% of casualities of this war are done by artillery its totally logical.

His political career started when he played a role of honest president in a series and people believed that he was going to be the same in reality. During elections he promised to stop the war with Russia and come back to partnership with it - the major part of russians in Ukrane believed him and voted for him. As an Englishman who has been in and out of Ukraine since May 2022 and continues to go there every 6 weeks or so taking aid and distributing etc, the tragedy does not end. The war has touched every family in Ukraine and in any small village no matter how small and remote, you will find a section with graves of warriors and the flags flying. Driving through villages you often need to stop to pay respects as a funeral is moving along the road. Pavlo is right in that all the old enlisted soldiers mostly are gone, it is now a conscripts battle and the conscripts coming through now are either those caught by the patrols or those who never wanted to enlist; their hear is simply not in it. Thousands have paid their way out of Ukraine and out of service and its sickening seeing those with wealth and assets crossing the borders. Every time I cross from the Romanian border at Siret, you see late model cars with fighting age men and often 3 or 4 young guys together laughing and carrying on and you just know they have paid to be exempt. Or you get those in Kyiv and Lyviv in their sports cars, roaring around the cities while other countrymen are dying. Its a sad situation all round and needs to end. The West has a lot to answer for as we helped provoke this conflict and gave false assurances to Ukraine about their security. My prayers for all those Ukrainian brothers in arms who have already given their lives and for those warriors still serving. 💛💙🙏

In order to keep the land and people sacrificed, then in the end the land can not be kept, and the temporary loss of the land, people keep it, the land can be regained. This is Mao Zedong's military thinking, and he believes that the goal of a campaign should be to destroy the enemy's living forces, and not to care about the gains or losses of one place or one city. A strategic retreat in the face of a powerful enemy is to accumulate strength for future counterattacks. Mao Zedong believed that the side with weak forces should not engage in positional warfare with a strong enemy, but should annihilate the enemy in a war of movement. The more land the enemy occupies, the more dispersed the enemy's forces become, and then it is possible to concentrate superior forces to attack in the weak points of the enemy's forces due to the dispersion.

They had to fight and they have fought very well, but it's crazy to just focus on fighting while not trying to achieve a political solution at the same time. I don't think this war can be won by Ukraine on the battlefield, so the longer it goes on, the more people will have to die. This 2008 cable was written by William Burns, the current CIA Director, during his time as US Ambassador to Russia.
"5. (C) Ukraine and Georgia's NATO aspirations not only touch a raw nerve in Russia, they engender serious concerns about the consequences for stability in the region. Not only does Russia perceive encirclement, and efforts to undermine Russia's influence in the region, but it also fears unpredictable and uncontrolled consequences which would seriously affect Russian security interests. Experts tell us that Russia is particularly worried that the strong divisions in Ukraine over NATO membership, with much of the ethnic-Russian community against membership, could lead to a major split, involving violence or at worst, civil war. In that eventuality, Russia would have to decide whether to intervene; a decision Russia does not want to have to face."

If the other side is having trouble getting volunteers and resorting to forcefully send people to frontline, maybe there is something wrong with what they are doing. On the other hand, when Russians did partial mobilisation, they let those who did not want to fight leave the country, they didn't stop them at gunpoint like the Ukrainians do to those fleeing for their lives to EU or Moldova. The past month we've seen more vids from Ukraine of people fighting these recruiting officers, family members and neighbors jumping in to prevent them taking someone. Conscripts get three weeks "training" and then sent to the front where the average time to become a casualty is three days. Yesterday a group of about 8 Territorial troops (the old men), made a video saying they've been at the front 18 months without rotation and for Kyiv to send the "sons of rich people, politicians, police, etc." to come replace them. In Forbes there was an article last week about Kyiv freezing bank accounts of those who won't come back (and incredibly the US is OK with this). Who can blame them? This isn't 2022 anymore; to be sent to the front to face Storm-Z means the end of you.

I'm not a politician but is that piece of land that Russia got really worth all of these people dying? Almost feels like this is getting closer to something like a suicide mission but the ones that will be dying are drafted innocent civilians and not the rich politicians who started the whole thing. Where are the peace talks?

little do u know how tough Ukr women have always been, they r well known as tough, and not small bodied either, i.e the avg height of the younger gen is unbelievabl tall actually, often taller than many Ukr men! And not just and thin but strong. U have no idea. Russian women do not compare to Ukr women and many russian men are smaller than the avg Ukrainian man and some women ,overall.

Both Ukraine and Russia conscript only men to war. Where are all the gender equality advocates? Are male lives and health less valuable? If so, then it turns out that men are oppressed and women are privileged and not vice versa.
