Don, Danube, Dnister and Dnipro, all derivatives of Danylo and were the original realm of our lands. The trident in my opinion is derived from this. I had the A blue yellow and Hutsul coloured Trident woven by my grandmother on my wall since a child.

In America we have the bald eagle since it was officially adopted in 1787. I really admire the Ukrainian Trident. It even looks like a bird in a sense. An emblem of courage and strength.

It was the correct guess. One of the Trident meaning is an attacking falcon. BTW There is a trident-falcon on the wall in Vatican that depicts Ukraine-Rus symbolics, moreover in old times in pagan religions and early christianity such bird means a soul.
It's not a "Trident". It's a Peregrin falcon diving for prey. Eagles and falcons were symbols of power in the Middle Ages, and therefore used on almost every single military patch, family symbol for prince and kings. Anna is wrong.
I only knew trident as a symbol of Poseidon, the god of sea, so I was surprised it's a national symbol of Ukraine too. Now it's firmly associated with your brave country! Slava Ukraini

I also only knew the association to Poseidon or Neptune (same god, like so many of the Greek gods also received Latin versions.). The idea that it might also be seen as a diving falcon is also nice.
It's a really simple and striking symbol. And now the whole free world knows it symbolizes Ukraine and it's heroic fight for freedom and independence!
I love that the Moskva was sunk with two Ukranian Neptune naval missiles! Sweden sent our best naval missiles in the beginning of the full scale invasion, when Odesa was really at risk. But it feels much better that genuine Ukraine missiles sunk the Moskva!
The Russian fleet needs to go away. Preferrably sunk! It's the fleet of an evil imperialistic country.
P.S. When I was a kid, I thought it was fun to try and write Swedish words with cyrillic letters. My father told me about some letters actually sounding diffrent, so it became a little extra tricky.😅But children like such games.
I guess future tourists to Ukraine from the free world will learn to read a few words in Ukranian cyrillic script.

The trident symbol is minimum 2300 years old. The Nazis stole it and used it as a symbol of their ideology.
It is nowadays banned in Sweden but those using it outside Sweden is somehow saluted even with the knowledge that they got it from the Nazis.
I don't want Ucraine to lose the war but it is actually a country that strictly follow the German 1940 ideology.

The people of Constantinople would immediately recognize what it meant. It was the symbol of destruction coming from the sea to them.
It is the same reason the submarine-launched nuclear missiles are the Trident and Trident II missiles. If Putin is stupid enough to use a nuclear weapon, it will be a Trident II that wipes Moscow off the map permanently. It is strangely fitting that a Trident will be the end of Moscow if Russia decides to use nuclear weapons, isn’t it?

Anna 'forgot' to say than the trizub was invented by Russian historian Karamzin at the beginning of 19th century. And it is only after a century it was chosen as a symbol by Ukrainian (and Russian!) nationalists

I travel a lot for work, and admittedly look for anybody wearing Ukrainian symbols in the airport to pass the time. I’ve met a couple of Ukrainians that way… I also look for Ukrainian flags wherever I go. I’m always happy to see them when I do come across them!

I have always wondered about the version of the trident used by Ukraine. It looks like a stylized bird.
Looking into the history of the place, I find that in struggles in the 17th century, the Hawk was the symbol of the zaporozhian Cossacks. More than one Ukrainian song I have read in translation, talks about the ‘hawk’ in a way that seems to mean an untamed Cossack.
If there is a connection here, can you give us any detail?

With you having mentioned it now, I'm really fascinated by how much it looks like a diving falcon.
I admittedly saw that in it before I learned what it was a few months into the war. A beautiful symbol, either way.
I think the simple answer is usually true. In ancient times the Black Sea was abundant with fish and trade, so a trident seems obvious. Some ancient ruler took it as the symbol and the dynasty lasted long enough for it to stick. Since the trident can also be a weapon, it also projects strength. It may go all the way back to the ancient Greeks since they had settlements around Odessa for centuries.
Yes, the Greeks lived along the Black Sea coast for millennia. In Ukraine they traded with the Scythians for gold and other goods.

I have the trident on my travel wallet, made in Ukraine 🙂. When ruzzia is ended and contained, I would like to come back to Ukraine. I have friends and people i worry about there. I think it would be great therapy to help and rebuild. This must not be forgotten.

It’s very much a conversation starter. I travel for work, and am always looking for people wearing the trident and other Ukrainian symbols wherever I go… So far I’ve met a couple of Ukrainians that way. I’m planning on getting some shirts with the trident on them pretty soon here to wear when I’m traveling to hopefully meet more Ukrainians and supporters of Ukraine…
The raven theory seems plausible, the Norse definitely used that on coins and other things and it was quite stylised.

I learned about the trezub/trident in the 70’s when I studied at our parish Ukrainian schools on weekends (ugh!). Both in English and Ukrainian, the meaning translates literally as “three teeth”, like Neptune’s spear. I always loved the design, so as soon as the Orcs invaded, I had one tattooed on my wrist

I could understand how people might see a resemblance to a trident symbol derived from the ancient fishing spear, but looking at the way tryzub is drawn, and the way it appears on old relics, it does look more like the wings and tail of a diving bird, and the oval shape pointing down at the bottom looks like the body and beak of such a bird. I could see how a medieval king could wish to compare himself to a diving falcon as a warning to potential enemies that he was a dangerous person to offend.
My research of the symbol have lead me to a kings crown with center being a jewel.

My initial impression of the tryzub was that this was stylized rendition (Celtic-like to my eyes) of the Holy Ghost/Spirit representing the spirit of Pentecost, and that the trident aspect itself represented the Blessed Trinity. Combined with the image of a diving falcon, it seems to be to be a powerful merging of the religious with the national secular. The power of this icon cannot be ignored! It is on the Ukrainian flag that I display at home, superimposed on the traditional bi-color flag! Слава Україні! 🇺🇦
Far older is the steppe peoples' recognition of the eagle as the animal who flies highest, fathest-seeing, who is the intermediary who visits both the Great Sky, and taught a woman to speak the language of the animals, which humans had forgotten.
The tale is ancient, and more complex than i here relate, though, as you see, informs us that we had forgotten our relationship with all other life.
You might find more allegorical truth by extending beyond narrow and mistaken solipsistic myth.
Pantheists at least recognized that their pantheons represented both human mental traits and limitations, as well as physical forces.
Manichaean delusion is entirely overly simplistic, as what is "good"
- you may subtract one o if you like and still remain accurate - for one individual living organism may not be the same for another.

Here's a proposal you may not have heard...
Your Tryzub resembles a medieval Wolf Trap, especially the modern symbol.
Often they were tall boards stuck into the ground with two deep V cuts at the top. Meat was stuck on the central higher spike. The wolf jumps up and catches his big front feet in the Vees, then hangs there until the hunter comes to collect him. The openings at the V bottoms simply help to hold his feet in. Years ago I bought a book with a medieval wolf trap illustration in it from a period woodcut that was printed. I saw the resemblance immediately. The Tryzub's higher central spike, the constricting wings and the places for his paws to lock in at the bottom.
Very neat symbol. I never have seen such illustrations or excellent explanation as yours and I looked it up on our English language internet. Publish to Wikipedia!

Since I became aware of the trident as the symbol of Ukraine at the beginning of the full-scale invasion, I’ve been a fan of it! I would agree that it looks very stylish, and think it is simultaneously ancient and modern. I think it fits well in a variety of situations, ranging from professional settings to being worn on t-shirts. I personally have a trident keychain that I keep on my keys.
At Christmas time I had my nieces and nephew make cards for my friends and acquaintances in Ukraine. I taught them some words and phrases, and taught them about the Ukrainian flag and the trident so they could use these in their cards. My nephew thought the trident was the coolest thing, and as such included the trident as a focal point of every card he made. So it definitely has his stamp of approval! 🙂

@@irenes.2807 it was a meaningful activity that I’m glad I was able to do with the kids. I was originally thinking they’d each make a card or two, but they were very enthusiastic. Between the four of them, they made 17 cards! 😳😂 The youngest is five and has Down Syndrome, so she’s not to the point of drawing actual pictures yet, but she made a couple herself. She mainly scribbled on paper and demonstrated her ability to use scissors… 😂 Then the other kids helped out and added a nice message to them. I printed out a few phrases for them to copy in Cyrillic (“Merry Christmas”, “Glory to Ukraine” and “We love you”) and they did a wonderful job with them! Honestly, their handwriting was remarkably good (much better than mine, and I’ve been actually studying the language! 😂)
I scanned all the cards in and sent them to all my Ukrainian friends, including Anna, as well as to any other Ukrainians I follow on CZcams. I was questioning if I should send them to a couple of the channels that I don’t watch as regularly or that I haven’t had as much interaction with, but felt it was our gift to the Ukrainian people and sent it to everybody that I was able to. It turns out, one of the people I was questioning sending them to ended up being very touched by it. He told me that it was what he woke up to in the morning, and that it set a positive tone for the whole day. 😊 He also told me that he was going to print them off and send them to the soldiers on the front line. So I was very happy that it brought some joy to the Ukrainians that I sent them to. 🙂

Never underestimate the patriotic value of a really nice t-shirt.
My trident tattoo will come. I have contact with a tattoo artist in Kyiv, and when the moment comes I can come, I will be there to have it set (just like the Cossack I have on my right arm, I want to have it set in Ukraine). There is 1 open square left on my left arm (which carries images that tell stories, hopes and dreams of my life). Since 2013 Ukraine has become a part as well. Couldn't find a better spot.

The trident was originally a fishing spear and is often seen with sea Gods like Poseidon. It also doubled as a land weapon as did many farming tools like pitch forks which were often three pronged, scythes, hammers and sickles.

Last year I put a trident sticker on my truck, as an obvious show of support, but recently I wondered if it wasn't right, since I am not Ukrainian. I didn't want to seem like I was appropriating something. But if Anna says it's okay, then I'll proudly display this symbol of courage and strength until the orcs have been driven from Ukraine permanently. And it actually has started a few conversations with curious strangers, so all the better. Slava Ukraine!

In the Ukrainian alphabet, the "V" Volodymyr Velykyj is a "B." One "B" forward facing and one in reverse, along with a center cross, form the Trident. Volodymyr Velykyj baptized Rus "original name of Ukraine" as a Christian country in the year 988, 150 year before Moscow was even a swamp hut.

These were displayed in my Ukrainian class in Junior High School, and were on the cover of my textbook. Ukrainians in Canada proudly displayed the flag and trident crest all through the Soviet Dark Ages. We still do, and we are even more proud of them now!
