    Nice. I'm just going to take my door and screen off to keep it simple & clean looking. My apartment doesn't allow fires anymore due to insurance reasons, so I'm gonna pack it full of flameless candles of varying sizes. You, sir, have helped inspired me to get to work.

    I used CLR to clean the windows and it worked perfectly. I let the CLR sit on the glass for hours while I did other stuff. CalciumLimeRust remover. Thank you for your vid :) Plus I am painting the "brass" black. Excited. Thank you!!

    You have a drop dead gorgeous set of glass doors. They are exactly like mine. The prior owner of my house removed all the screens and I will not operate it without a screen and I have been looking all over the place for them. I found them on Amazon and ordered a pair. When they arrived I removed the whole unit by lossening the pair of thumb screws on each side. I took it outside and I needed to clean it up. My glass was not as bad as yours. I removed the fiberglass insulation and set the three pieces a side. Then I went grabbed my spray can of PB Blaster penetrating oil and sprayed it down and wiped it down with cloth rags. Then I used Windex to clean the glass. I would have used a razor scraper and Windex to clean the glass if it was like yours. I would have grabbed the one to clean the creamic stove top that gets rid of all that burnt on stuff. My glass doors just needed Windex. Then I turned it upsinde down and removed the rods and threaded the new screens on the rods and reinstalled the rods. Connecting the pull chains were tricky because the rods are actually slightly too short to fit right. Put the insulation in and reinstalled. I even fixed the air damper at the bottom with the PB Blaster and replaced the missing antique brass knob from Lowes.
    The difference in appearance is remarkable and after seening yours, you need to clean the brass. Antique brass is gorgeous, and a lot better than the black people are painting them with.
    I hope I have inspired your next video. Wait for warmer weather and do it outside on a table that you can get oil and dirt on.
    FYI, close the damper to keep varmits out. My flue cap blew off in a hurricane and later I had a baby and momma squirrel in my fireplace behind the glass doors. Our pets were going crazy. Do you know how to get squirrels out of the house? I do. Open the house doors and they run out. Momma out the front and the baby out the back and a dog and a cat chasing them. Enertainment was had by all.

    This man just saved me at least 300 bucks in the first three minutes of this video. I have a broken glass panel and had no idea how to go about fixing it. Taking off the door was a huge help! Thank you!! Now that I know how to take the panels off, as lazy as I am, I'm going to put them in the dishwasher by themselves and see how clean they turn out. Thumbs up and subscribed.

    We dismantled a '70s vintage brass insert for an update with matte black paint. It came out great and went back together with surprising ease despite the 8 months it sat in the shed before it rose to the top of the jobs list in a whole-house reno. Until we tried to put the doors back into the tracks. We are neither ignorant nor foolish men, yet we couldn't figure out how to get the doors back on their tracks. We struggled! Our prolonged efforts only served to gouge the new paint revealing the underlying shiny brass. The heavy, sharp bottom was danced across the new den flooring. The foulest of vocabulary was hurled to the heavens out of maws dripping with frustrated sweat. There had to be a secret to this; the answer couldn't be to pop the rivets and come from behind... The last ditch effort was to fire up the laptop to see if anyone else had solved this conundrum. Dude, you saved that insert from being hurled out behind the barn If we were in that position, I'd wager there are a whole gaggle of us. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

    Great tip to take the doors off, but a cheaper product to use that cleans them even easier is Dollar General's "No Fume" oven cleaner. It's half the price, and all you do is spray it on, wait ten minutes, then rinse it off in your shower.

    What is the track or main piece that holds the doors called? Mine started coming loose and is almost identical to this. You can see what looks like some kind of foam insulation between the wall and the frame of the fireplace doors. It doesn't look like nearly enough if it's supposed to be adhesive. I was thinking I might be able to use fireplace caulking like Rutland.

    • @KWwest
      @KWwest Před 2 lety +1

      Yes! Glass door are to be open when burning a fire, mesh screens closed. They can be closed when there are only small embers about to go out. Glass doors are tempered and will explode if left closed - he’s pretty lucky I’d say!

    • @terryzajda5974
      @terryzajda5974 Před 2 lety

      Huh....I've been closing the doors for 37 years. AND I stoke it up before I close them. Then it keeps heat going for hours after I go to bed. I also upgraded to a new blower with a 90 degree temp shutoff so it doesn't keep blowing after the box gets cool. My ceramic glass is rated to 1360 degrees, it came standard with my insert. You can upgrade to ceramic glass, check online, they can cut custom sizes.

    Best way to clean the glass. Dip newspaper into water then press wet part onto Ashes then use that to wipe off the glass doors. Once the newspaper gets to dirty get another sheet of newspaper and repeat the process. You will go through a dozen or so sheets of newspaper. It's super fast and easy.

      There may be 2 thumb screws on each side that may take a pair of pliers to loosen. Then just lift it up and off. Some others are screwed into the brick. Stick your head in with a flashlight and takea look.
