Eating a meal has been THE social activity for all of human history. It makes sense in our technological era that we supplement our lack of community with videos of people eating food together.
I think eating together is also a very important thing for a lot of animals

@@jellojiggler1693 That was kinda the person's point. I think a lot of humans, including myself at points, forget that we are animals in nature.
We need the same social and psychological stimulus that other animals do in nature. Trying to run from our animal instincts leads to a ton of negative health problems.
I'm not saying ignore society and starting to fling your feces like monkeys do, or sexually assaulting people.
Just that a sense of community and socializing is something that helps most animals be healthy. It's not different for humans, our socialization just gets a little more complicated.

I genuinely usually HATE watching people eat, but something about shows like Hot Ones and mythical kitchen's Last Meals appeal to me so much because of the actual interviews and the context around them. I wouldnt watch interviews where the food is unrelated because the idea of just like. watching someone eat is gross to me. But i think its interesting when the food is relevant
I relate completely. I do not like watching people eat. I actively avoid it…but hot ones is so good I deal with the eating part to enjoy the interviews. Sean Evans is excellent. ❤ 🔥

Same! Mukbangs are just viscerally gross and horrifying to me if they’re not talking, but I really enjoy watching Last Meals and some food reviewers. I also hate eating in front of people and avoid it as much as I can-obviously dates and work dinners are inevitable but I will just cover my mouth with a napkin the whole time.

last meals is definitely my favourite of these that ive tried to get into, not only is josh an extremely talented individual in many ways but the show has an extremely creative interview style talking about topics most dont bring up

Yeah, and the food they prepare is often really thoughtful with a ton of effort put in. Hot ones is just like, “eat these shitty wings with hot sauce!”

i love both hot ones and last meals but last meals is definitely my favorite! its one thing to have a great concept, but nailing the execution too, that doesn't always happen. josh and his team absolutely kill it and make it the best it could possibly be. the only downside is they're heavy enough i sometimes cant even finish in one sitting lol

I think what also helps is the fact it really breaks down the “awe” of celebrities. Like yah I eat and so does Jenna Ortega we are literally the same person. Like we all eat, poop, and sleep. And quite frankly I personally don’t wanna see celebrities poop or sleep. So eating works quite well.
it's the talking with your mouth full effect, honestly. immediately breaks down some of the social barriers and makes people more human
Considering giving food or eating next to each other is considered an act of friendship with many animals, I think our brains innately associate food as a sign to relax..it’s a universal thing we all need, and it’s easy to transition from just questions to a conversation.
As an Incredibles super fan, I really appreciate the “I think not” clip, put it in every video as far as I’m concerned
Hot Ones NEEDS a spin-off called Cold Ones. It's the same premise, but with alcoholic drinks.
There is a show like that with the same title, just not by the same people as Hot Ones

@@shaynalange7488 it's called Cold Ones. They're not getting huge guests (streamer Ludwig, comedy rapper Yung Gravy, bad-tech reviewer? Dankpods (even as a fan, I don't know how to describe what he does, mostly just yells at old mp3 players and takes things apart)) and it's more kind of a comedy podcast/commentary channel vibe. It's a couple lads having a laugh over some beers. If you vibe with the lads, it's pretty fun.
I think that would work a bit less due to how often celebrities struggle with alcoholism
@@shaynalange7488 it’s called cold ones. It’s more of a comedy podcast with small time internet creator guests than a big production. It’s a couple lads being lads; if you catch their vibe, it’s pretty fun.

I don’t know if this is mentioned but I also think the relative affordability of food makes it more relatable. I might never be able to afford to vacation where these celebrities vacation, but I could probably afford a celebrities’ favorite meal after they mention it in an interview.

I'm Argentinian, over here there is a famous tv show called "Having lunch with Mirtha Legrand". It was this very very very fancy living room, Mirtha Legrand (who was 41 when the show started airing) and around 6 guests every week. They would eat lunch and talk about whatever. Every Sunday at lunch. The show has been airing for 56 years. It is still ongoing. Her granddaughter took over a couple of years ago, but I believe Mirtha came back this year.
The show started in 1968.

In a similar vein, one of my favorite series on CZcams is Tasting History with Max Miller, where Max creates a dish using a historical recipe, then explores the context and history of that dish. For example, he did several videos on the Titanic where he made a dish from each class of passengers on the day of the sinking, then described what their experiences on the ship would have been like. Obviously, the food is there to grab your attention, but it's also an excuse to better understand the daily lives of people who lived decades, centuries, even millennia ago.
P.S. I was, in fact, eating while watching this video, so that call out really got me.

My favorite one of these was the Conan O'Brien episode of Hot Ones. Dude just straight up drinks the bottle of hot sauce
the cool thing about last meals is how every episode has such a different variety of foods that not only gives a different conversation about food each episode but can also give us insight on the guest based on the foods they like
I’d say the off menu podcast is also a fun play on this format because it’s not real food involved but the conversation still stems from anecdotes and talking around food and I think it’s comforting in the same way
I heard somewhere families who eat dinner, phones put away, and have conversations, are happier. I feel like a similar psychology could be applied here
this!! i took a food & sustainability course in university and one of my big takeaways was how there’s this inherent communality in preparing/sharing a meal. same reason a lot of us watch YT while eating- we don’t want to be alone
My favorite spin on these is Not Ones by the Yogscast. It’s just Hot Ones but with the Yogs, they have a host, Sarah, who CANNOT consume spice. They just go through all the spiciest ones and talk about things with joke questions.

@@loganbass9969 no but they did go more into why. They wanted to do a big rendered cg animated finale and a bunch of things went wrong the world save got corrupted the animation was very expensive. Lewis showed a short clip of the unfinished animation somewhere.
A newer member called Boba is a long time fan and has expressed an interest in finishing it herself

You're forgetting the most important example: Sundae Conversation. Where host Caleb asks interviewees absolutely ridiculous questions as Glenny Balls quietly eats an ice cream sundae between them.

I actually recently did a presentation on malnutrition in the elderly and one of the risk factors is not having the social aspect of it, in other words elders may become depressed and stop eating because they don’t have anyone to eat with. So yes there is definitely a social aspect of eating.

"What about shows that aren't about food..." Oh man you just made me realize Getting Doug With High can cover the spectrum of these shows depending on how much people smoke in their lives. Like Jack Black basically got a Hot Ones experience. Whereas B-Real is basically doing a chicken shop lunch situation.
I’d HIGHLY recommend the “Off Menu Podcast” hosted by James Acaster and Ed Gamble. It’s premise is that the guest is in a mythical restaurant and they construct their perfect, not always realistic, menu. Not only is it hilarious but it’s so interesting to hear the guests reasons as to why they’ve picked what they have. My favourite answers have been “chicken and waffles that end the bite before they become too much” (the Romesh Ranganathan episode) and “two greggs pasties for my side dish” (the Sarah Millican episode)

ohhh thanks for the recommendation, I love James but I hadn't heard of this. I recently listened to his audiobook "Classic Scrapes" and it was so much fun, we listened to it on a long drive.
If you're from the UK this will be a silly recommendation because I understand it's really popular there but I also love the show TaskMaster. I think they have it for free here on CZcams but James has been on that as well. The premise is a gameshow, but honestly it's a bunch of comedians just goofing off and torturing one of the hosts.

I understand it's common for humans to bond over food but I can't be the only one who hates eating in front of other people! Also this validates my complete inability to sit down for one of those roundtable videos. I've been feeling vague guilt about it this whole time and I never even realized
Nope same. I hate hearing people eat and having them hear me. I hate watching slimy food and I hate the feeling of being greasy and gluttonous after eating to fullness. I hate bodily waste and the lingering taste of whatever paste you ground up in your mouth 2 hours ago.

I got fooled by the title and waited a couple of days to watch because I like food interview shows. 😅 But this was a great video as usual! 💕 Also so funny, I was listening to Yummy earlier and I got confused at the end thinking it was playing again over the video somehow. 😂
I love that Last Meals has a gimmick on top of the food in that the he talks about life and mortality. But then the food itself usually connects back to it in really heartwarming ways when the food has fond memories attached. The MatPat interview was a great example of why the format is so amazing.

I think Anthony Bourdain would fit in this, but like an uno reverse version. He would often talk to someone from the place he was visiting over a table of food from that place and he would ask them about the specifics of the food, important historical events as well as just chatting

I truly think Hot Ones,Chicken Shop Date, and Last Meals are doing something so fun and unique. Amelia and Josh are such great interviewers even if Amelia's persona is awkward. Sean is really great. Even Conan said he was a great interviewer.
