Motley Crue - Dr. Feelgood - Vince Neil - Isolated Vocals - Analysis/Tutorial
Motley Crue's stuff was always incredibly well-produced with great harmonic, melodic structures and very catchy songs with anthemic choruses.
What is your all-time favorite Motley Crue tune? Let me know in the comments!
Vince Neil actually has a really small voice and as we look at his isolated vocals from "Dr. Feelgood", we'll see how both the production and the band really helped to create that big sound we remember.
To show you how the song was produced I'm going to sing a bit of the tune myself with added effect so you can see the difference.
Check it out!
And here's my version of the tune:

I play Vince in a Motley Crue tribute band. I get compliments about how much I sound like him. All I do I sing through my nose.
Happy New Year! 🎉🥂🍾🎈🧨
I wish I was in a tribute band
Ya he uses alot of head voice
I didn’t know you were a Ken T Man!! I’ve learned literally tons from watching his videos!!
Maybe you can stand in for Vince on his 2022 tour. I hear his voice is shot.
Vince Neal’s sleazy sounding voice is perfect for this band
Rock on!
Yip, that's about the size of it, ...but it's worked out well, -Touché! - for them. 👍
@@johnstrika9170 Yeah but Vince's voice is so unique and of course when we think of Mötley Crüe, we think of Vince's voice. Corabi fit well in the self-titled album because it was more grungy and heavier
I listened to an industry level producer once, on a radio interview. He took a question about how these vocalists are able to sound so great on the albums and so empty on stage. He said not to be discouraged by your own voice because it even takes singers like Christina Aguilera & the like an average of 40 takes per song just to have enough cuts to edit from & make a successful album. 👍🏻
That's right. And, in many cases, a lot of production magic.
I’ve read that Phil Anselmo used to record line-by-line for Pantera
@@convexsix he's not the only one.
I've been Mötley Crue fan for ages, since teen years. And Vince Neil is my favorite singer for 35 years. 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
I'd like to suggest a new series slamming the modern pop icons excess use of autotune. I'm sure you'll get triple the views... And earn a few more haters too 😂.
Great job as always my man Sensei Tamplin.
Noted!
@@kentamplin yes please.i am sick of autotune>vince neil always sucked.
Begin with Taylor Swift 😆
I couldn't sing my way out of a broom closet but I love watching your videos. I'm really enjoying this series. Could you do a Skid Row song?
I may! Thanks for listening!
You will eventually and even better if you don't give up!😊
Ken, please do KISS, Paul Stanley.
“Over thinking, over doing” is so true. You go to sing the part and you give it your all. You listen carefully and you realize the singer isn’t giving it all. Half the time not much louder, harder then a talking voice
Thanks for the visit! Rock on!
I totally agree with what you say about Nikki Sixx. Been saying this for a long time, especially after the first 2 Sixx AM albums...
Rock on!
Six a.m. is incredible..would like to have you review some James Michael!
I've sang in a national touring Motley Crue tribute band for the better part of 20 years now and would like to thank you for stating the fact that, (to do it properly), "it's not easy". Thank you for all the great videos! Keep up the great work!
Rock on!
I will be signing up to take your course very soon as I just turned 45 and want to make sure I am still singing properly and utilizing everything I can. Thanks again!

I work in the worship of my church. Your lessons and vocal analysis help me to recognize articulations and interpretations in our songs.
Thank you very much.
My pleasure!
I use to listen to these Isolated vocals a lot but you helped remind me of the importance of checking them out more often. Myself being an audio producer and a vocalist, it's so great to hear the processing involved in some of our fav vocalists and songs. I love ALL your videos and I'm always learning something. Thanks Ken :)
Happy to hear that, Steve!
This was hilarious, you do a great job imatating these singers.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I just used that low-octave double with the gated reverb (effect only) trick and it sounds great. I've always found my low octave doubles to be cheesy. By muting the original track and hearing the reverb only, you can add some weight and depth to the vocal without making it obvious. Thanks so much! I have learned so much from watching your videos!
Very cool! Happy to hear that! Rock on!
Don't feel bad about not knowing Vince's lyrics. Vince doesn't know Vince's lyrics either.
Haha!
LMAO. SO TRUE.
Another very good analysis Ken! Vince might not be the greatest singer in history for sure but I love this guy! Once again you prove to us that the effects and the production in the studio do a lot of things, which can sometimes make a live performance seem disappointing ... But as you say, between the flow of words, the high tone and the Vince's very agitated stage play, it is ultimately very difficult or even impossible to do the same thing live as in the studio !!! Anyway I love Vince and Motley !!!
Rock on!
Vince=Rock Legend. Is he Steve Perry? No but would we really want Perry singing Dr. feel-good? Vince has a unique tone and a great live presence that just worked for that band.
Rock on!
There's a talent in itself the way a lot of these 80's sang. Most of them were young non trained rocker kids just making it up as best they could. But honestly most of us didn't like true vibrato type vocals? We used to call them opera singers😂👍 look at who has the most popular songs that have stood the test of time 🤔 now that I'm older and have put 30+ yrs into playing in original bands and most recently cover bands, I can really appreciate the Steve perry/Bruce Dickinson type vocals👍 I just think it's comparing apples to Orange's because a trained singer would never have given us what Vince,Joe Elliot, Stephen Pearcy ect.. gave us ...
@@anthonybustos8901 He’s a vocal coach, it’s literally his job to analyze voices. Jesus...What a great guy you are sticking up for a bloated, alcoholic has-been, murderer like Vince. I’m sure he appreciates it. Maybe he’ll send you a cameo video for your “burpday”.
Seen them every time they came thru starting in 84 all the way to the stadium tour. Back in the day Vince sounded pretty dam good live. Not so much theses days but they still rock🤘🤘🤘🤘
Vince's vocals fit this band perfectly back in the day! Enjoyed the video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I think it’s so AMAZING u r doing this series.... you might have been reading my. Mind. Because, awhile back maybe 4 months ago ended up in the isolated vocals rabbit hole and was binge listening to some REALLY GREAT ONES. I’ve ALWAYS said the true test of a singers ability is in the acoustic/isolated vocal. Nowhere to hide. Thanks, Ken!!!
So glad you are enjoying it, SuperHero LOVES Akita's
Analyze Tesla!! Modern Day Cowboy! They are suuuper underrated, great video 👍🏻
Great suggestion!
Jeff Keith is a kickass vocalist Vince on the other hand is not.
Jeff Keith has a unique voice
I read an interview (maybe Tommy Lee's book...) that in the studio with Bob Rock they spent an entire day just punches in a single word of Vince's vocals on this record! Not sure if that's speculation but thought it was interesting.
Interesting, Steve!
Loving this isolated vocal series! Thanks a bunch for doing this.
Glad you enjoy it!
Can you please do an isolated vocal analysis of a more recent 2000’s Ozzy song like one from Down To Earth like Gets Me Through or Facing Hell?
Thanks for the suggestion.
Great album
We all know Vince is not the most proficient singer in the world, he was a cover band singer! Now he's been the Voice of Motley going on 40 yrs.! Do I wish He would get in better shape physically and vocally...Yes! I would just like to see him sound like himself live!
He can do it! He's a great singer! When he's disciplined and in shape, Vince is entertaining! And does a great job! Let's Go! Motley 2021 Stadium Tour! We can at least, hope and pray for it!
Thanks for weighing in, Spiccoli Rocks!
I love ❤️ Motley Crue, I really love there music 🎶 and songs, this was very cool listening to and back in the day Vince was a real showman! I really agree with you Nikki Sixx is a great song writer! How about from SixxAm on Life Is Beautiful! I would love it if you could do isolated voice for Adam Lambert! Motley Crue would’nt be the same without Vince Neil’s voice, I’ve enjoyed you breaking down of these isolated tracks, have a great day Ken🥰
Glad you're enjoying them, karen.
Would be interesting to see you analyze Blackie Lawless of W.A.S.P, a very underrated frontman in my opinion. Keep up the good work!
Great suggestion!
@@kentamplin Golgotha! Great song

Widowmaker .
Lawless is a pretty good singer too .... very unique
I seen them live and its a shame he was lip syncing
Guess I have a pretty good ear. I could always hear the punch on the “Jigsaw Jimmy he’s a runnin’ a gang / but I hear he’s doin’ ok!” I always thought it wasn’t so much he couldn’t sing the line continuous, but more that the lines are in such rapid fire that when you sing “gang” and then try to come out of it to “but I hear” you lose some of the accent of the word gang. My thoughts are they couldn’t quite nail that transition smoothly enough. Notice how strong he hits the word gang and then “ok”. Keeps the same intunation and strength in his voice. That’s just my observation, I could be wrong as well. I too tend to analyze tracks like this to see how they did it. Glad to hear someone give props to Vince. It’s not easy doing what he does.
Rock on!
I love the way you break these down so singers aren't thinking they have to hurt themselves. Would love to hear you do a Michael Sweet one, like To Hell With The Devil. Thanks Maestro 😊
Great suggestion, Marcus!
So, saw Motley for 1st time in Vegas 2013 during residency. Basically it was a preview of the 2014 farewell tour in ‘14. Yes, his voice is not same. The big sound from the band made up. But it was still good and we saw them 3 more times in ‘14. Their kickoff show, Louisville and Nashville. Nashville was hands down their best performance. Probably because it’s music city? I enjoyed. Even met Nikki in Vegas.
Thanks for the visit! Rock on!
How about Vince's isolated vocal for looks that kill.He was a few years younger..His instrument not so worn out from the abuse of touring for years.Think he went to Seth Riggs too.sls.That might explain his tiny sound?
Thanks for the suggestion, Shane!
Ken-- another awesome video. I am a huge Motley fan and was waiting for You to do Vince. Thank you!!
No problem!
I respect all singers for that I always notice when their singing and running around ,gald you put point that out
Great breakdown!

I feel like cruising in my Trans Am cranking up the Alpine and singing along! 😎👍
Have you ever done a video on the Japanese band Loudness?
Hahaha! I can picture it! No, I haven't.
Vince should watch this video.
Super interesting - thanks for doing these! Another singer that gets a lot of flack is David Lee Roth. However, when I listen to the isolated vocals on early Van Halen tracks, I can’t imagine anyone else pulling them off as effectively. Would love your take on early Van Halen with David Lee Roth!
Thanks for the visit! Happy New Year! 🎉🥂
Wow, this popped up in my recommendations, I never even thought of listening to Vince's isolated vocals but this was cool and insightful, I've always wondered Why even in his prime Vince skipped some words live, now I know why.
Thanks for the visit. Rock on!
This is really difficult doing live. Too much words. But in this episode the secret is exposed. His vocal style really is like Axl Rose's. Really high pitched. The vocal fx has similarities with Judas Priests'. Glam rock and metal is really the birth of Producers, i think. Great production compared to Grunge Era. Another great episode in this series. Thanks a lot sir Ken for the information shared.
My pleasure!
I would LOVE for you to do a vocal analysis of Paul Stanley's voice from the 1980s or 1990s. "Heaven's On Fire" would be a good one. This is when his voice was in it's peak. Paul was born with only one ear, so he had to learn to sing in a completely different way.
Noted! Rock on!
I have been to several Motley Crue concerts and stretched many of tapes out back in the day! (1980's problem, you had to be there!) But Vince Neil, as a performer, did not age well. The last concert I went to, in fact, he was terrible. Half the songs he didn't even try to sing, drawing the mic away when ever it got to a hard part - or pointing the mic away completely to the crowd. It became painfully obvious he couldn't do it any more. Conversely, Tommy Lee became an even larger showman over the years - and was amazing. Great video, Ken. I hope your Christmas was great, and that you have a blessed new year. Cheers!
That's when you bring the hot chicks on stage. Oldest trick in the book.

Hi Ken, I don't know if you were serious, but your take on Vince Neil was hilarious😂
Hey Ken! What can i say about Motley Crue? Are they retiring? Are they ending the band? A signed contract by the band in 2015 said just that. We now know that contract was blown up by the band! I highly recommend the dvd MOTLEY CRUE - THE END LIVE IN LOS ANGELES. Back where it all started on December 31, 2015. A New Years Eve bash that was supposed to be their last show forever. A packed Staples Center was treated to an awesome show. For those who haven't seen this dvd i won't spoil the incredible highlights. What i will say is the band left the crowd in tears with an emotional encore of Home Sweet Home from the second stage riser in the center of the audience. PHENOMENAL!!! To all Crue fans this show is a MUST see!
Jeff Schielka 🤘
Wonderful job! I’m enjoying these series so much! My son was watching the video with me and said that Vince sounds like a Chipmunk! Lol ... Have you done any isolated vocal track analysis for Kip Winger and Lou Gramm? That would be another interesting video.

Ken, this series (and others too) is freaking awesome, and you`re so pro man! :) Greetings from Finland! And can you please do some Sabbath era songs with Ozzy, cause in those songs Ozzman was in his prime and his voice was brilliant and high... not same old ones Paranoid or Iron man, BUT for example: Sabbra Cadabra, Symptom of the universe, Megalomania, Hole in the sky etc... You will be surprised ! Happy new year!
I'm glad you are enjoying it, hädi h!
The Dr. Feelgood mix is neither an accident nor an exercise in making lemons into lemonade. Bob Rock and the Crue put on a clinic on how to create a hard rock wall of sound whose impact is still felt today. There are only four main instruments to work with here, so multi-tracking is obviously appropriate. The second secret is in focusing these instruments in the frequency mix. Big full-range vocals are great for some types of music, but in a wall of sound full-range instruments will step on each other. Guitarists use scooped tones and wah pedals, but vocalists have to be more creative. Vince has mastered the nasal tone (cut lows and boosted mids) which is just bright enough to cut through. You can't bury a lead vocal in a mix and expect to sell records, and Bob Rock hasn't done that here. There have to be quality tracks to work with as only so much can realistically be achieved during post-production. So I give Vince a lot of credit for bringing his A-game in the studio here. His live reproductions are what they are, it doesn't subtract from this achievement to me.
I think Neil's prime on his vocals was the girls, girls, girls album, it seems that they double layered his vocals here
Thanks for weighing in!
Ken you're a true pro! Your analysis/tutorials are the best on youtube. Thanks again
Thank you!
I love This Video, really enjoyed this .Thanks 🙂 I love Motley Crue.❤

Hey ken, this is off-topic but I'm currently struggling with bad anxiety and have started doing your exercises for a month. It's been really good for my voice (2 more notes on my range) so thank you!
I wanted to know if antidepressants can make your voice weaker and make you unable to increase your range. This has been amazing for me but this anxiety is killing me and I don't know what to do.
Hi Pedro, I'm so sorry that you are going through this. It's important to know you aren't alone and this is a difficult time for many.
I would strongly recommend not taking antidepressants or anti-anxiety medication as it is extremely addicting and very hard to get off.
Regardless of what you do with your singing career this would be my first suggestion.
I also suggest not drinking your way into a relaxed state is this can also be a terrible road to go down.
The best way is to watch the videos I've put out on anxiety and the live stream I've done on this as well as there are many things in there that will help you overcoming this this.
Very good and interesting analysis of a great song. This made clade it's hard to catch vince tone, never realised that his style is so difficult to sing. Maybe we all underestimate him

Nikki is a really good songwriter, but he does write like a bass player and not a vocalist/songwriter. What I mean by that is the pacing and wordiness of his lyrics often leaves Vince very little time to breathe or have any recovery between lines.
Vince is often out of breath and frankly out of shape, but even if you listen to Shout at the Devil live from '83, Vince only sings about half the song. I believe that's the fault of the lyrical pacing.
Definitely a factor! Thanks for the thoughtful comment.
As a vocalist and principal songwriter I’ve actually done this to myself lol
Nekem az az érzésem, hogy Nikki Sixx ír egy dalszöveget és egy zenei elgondolást, amire Mick Mars csinálja meg a számomra zseniális zenét. A Mötley Crüe zenei hangzása Mick Mars!
I've heard many other singers sing Crue songs without any trouble. The problem is Vince. There's no getting around it. He has never cared about perfecting his craft. Find an interview where he talks about vocal technique to any significant extent. Good luck with that.
Well this would explain why Vince ALWAYS had a hard time live and its a known fact that the producers ESPESIALLY BOB ROCK had his work really cut out for him and it was the hardest part of making a CRUE record and hearing this now, definately makes sense and this is just one track!!not to mention on DR FEELGOOD u can tell that they most likely brought in BOB ROCK for the vocals cuz VINCE sounds quite a bit different then on previous albums,so I'm gonna assume they really edited the crap out of this album so they could bring out his BEST vocal for basically imo, each line,if not each word!!also pretty well known that BOB ROCK also plays Bass and not knockin Nikki and hes a great song writer but even up until this record could BARELY play Bass and if u listen to old crue records the Bass Is turned WAY DOWN and of course TOMMY LEE was/is good enough to make up some of the difference as well as CRUE wanting the guitar to be out in front and MICK gets my vote as the most underrated of all time!!
Rock on!
I remember reading that Beau Hill had a similar time with Ratt, and may have suggested that they maybe get a new singer-!!
(I liked Dance, Dance, Dance and Reach For The Sky, both similarly good, and made for when you wanna keep going like a Bat Outa Hell, while still having good melody & rhythm, etc. (as far a metal goes, that is).
Thanks Ken. Not a big Heavy Metal fan, but still respect the genre.
