    Motley Crue - Dr. Feelgood - Vince Neil - Isolated Vocals - Analysis/Tutorial
    Motley Crue's stuff was always incredibly well-produced with great harmonic, melodic structures and very catchy songs with anthemic choruses.
    What is your all-time favorite Motley Crue tune? Let me know in the comments!
    Vince Neil actually has a really small voice and as we look at his isolated vocals from "Dr. Feelgood", we'll see how both the production and the band really helped to create that big sound we remember.
    To show you how the song was produced I'm going to sing a bit of the tune myself with added effect so you can see the difference.
    Check it out!
    And here's my version of the tune:

    I listened to an industry level producer once, on a radio interview. He took a question about how these vocalists are able to sound so great on the albums and so empty on stage. He said not to be discouraged by your own voice because it even takes singers like Christina Aguilera & the like an average of 40 takes per song just to have enough cuts to edit from & make a successful album. 👍🏻

By muting the original track and hearing the reverb only, you can add some weight and depth to the vocal without making it obvious. Thanks so much! I have learned so much from watching your videos!

    Another very good analysis Ken! Vince might not be the greatest singer in history for sure but I love this guy! Once again you prove to us that the effects and the production in the studio do a lot of things, which can sometimes make a live performance seem disappointing ... But as you say, between the flow of words, the high tone and the Vince's very agitated stage play, it is ultimately very difficult or even impossible to do the same thing live as in the studio !!! Anyway I love Vince and Motley !!!

      There's a talent in itself the way a lot of these 80's sang. Most of them were young non trained rocker kids just making it up as best they could. But honestly most of us didn't like true vibrato type vocals? We used to call them opera singers😂👍 look at who has the most popular songs that have stood the test of time 🤔 now that I'm older and have put 30+ yrs into playing in original bands and most recently cover bands, I can really appreciate the Steve perry/Bruce Dickinson type vocals👍 I just think it's comparing apples to Orange's because a trained singer would never have given us what Vince,Joe Elliot, Stephen Pearcy ect.. gave us ...

    Guess I have a pretty good ear. I could always hear the punch on the “Jigsaw Jimmy he’s a runnin’ a gang / but I hear he’s doin’ ok!” I always thought it wasn’t so much he couldn’t sing the line continuous, but more that the lines are in such rapid fire that when you sing “gang” and then try to come out of it to “but I hear” you lose some of the accent of the word gang. My thoughts are they couldn’t quite nail that transition smoothly enough. Notice how strong he hits the word gang and then “ok”. Keeps the same intunation and strength in his voice. That’s just my observation, I could be wrong as well. I too tend to analyze tracks like this to see how they did it. Glad to hear someone give props to Vince. It’s not easy doing what he does.

But it was still good and we saw them 3 more times in ‘14. Their kickoff show, Louisville and Nashville. Nashville was hands down their best performance. Probably because it’s music city? I enjoyed. The vocal fx has similarities with Judas Priests'. Glam rock and metal is really the birth of Producers, i think. Great production compared to Grunge Era. Another great episode in this series. I have been to several Motley Crue concerts and stretched many of tapes out back in the day! (1980's problem, you had to be there!) But Vince Neil, as a performer, did not age well. The last concert I went to, in fact, he was terrible. Half the songs he didn't even try to sing, drawing the mic away when ever it got to a hard part - or pointing the mic away completely to the crowd. It became painfully obvious he couldn't do it any more. Conversely, Tommy Lee became an even larger showman over the years - and was amazing. Great video, Ken. I hope your Christmas was great, and that you have a blessed new year. Cheers!

I highly recommend the dvd MOTLEY CRUE - THE END LIVE IN LOS ANGELES. Back where it all started on December 31, 2015. A New Years Eve bash that was supposed to be their last show forever. A packed Staples Center was treated to an awesome show. For those who haven't seen this dvd i won't spoil the incredible highlights. The Dr. Feelgood mix is neither an accident nor an exercise in making lemons into lemonade. Bob Rock and the Crue put on a clinic on how to create a hard rock wall of sound whose impact is still felt today. There are only four main instruments to work with here, so multi-tracking is obviously appropriate. The second secret is in focusing these instruments in the frequency mix. Big full-range vocals are great for some types of music, but in a wall of sound full-range instruments will step on each other. Guitarists use scooped tones and wah pedals, but vocalists have to be more creative. Vince has mastered the nasal tone (cut lows and boosted mids) which is just bright enough to cut through. You can't bury a lead vocal in a mix and expect to sell records, and Bob Rock hasn't done that here. There have to be quality tracks to work with as only so much can realistically be achieved during post-production. So I give Vince a lot of credit for bringing his A-game in the studio here. His live reproductions are what they are, it doesn't subtract from this achievement to me.

    Hey ken, this is off-topic but I'm currently struggling with bad anxiety and have started doing your exercises for a month. It's been really good for my voice (2 more notes on my range) so thank you!
    I wanted to know if antidepressants can make your voice weaker and make you unable to increase your range. This has been amazing for me but this anxiety is killing me and I don't know what to do.

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  Před 3 lety +4

      Hi Pedro, I'm so sorry that you are going through this. It's important to know you aren't alone and this is a difficult time for many.
      I would strongly recommend not taking antidepressants or anti-anxiety medication as it is extremely addicting and very hard to get off.
      Regardless of what you do with your singing career this would be my first suggestion.
      I also suggest not drinking your way into a relaxed state is this can also be a terrible road to go down.
      The best way is to watch the videos I've put out on anxiety and the live stream I've done on this as well as there are many things in there that will help you overcoming this this.

    Nikki is a really good songwriter, but he does write like a bass player and not a vocalist/songwriter. What I mean by that is the pacing and wordiness of his lyrics often leaves Vince very little time to breathe or have any recovery between lines.
    Vince is often out of breath and frankly out of shape, but even if you listen to Shout at the Devil live from '83, Vince only sings about half the song. I believe that's the fault of the lyrical pacing.

      I've heard many other singers sing Crue songs without any trouble. The problem is Vince. There's no getting around it. He has never cared about perfecting his craft. Find an interview where he talks about vocal technique to any significant extent. Good luck with that.

  • @raypratt3611
    @raypratt3611 Před 3 lety +10

    Well this would explain why Vince ALWAYS had a hard time live and its a known fact that the producers ESPESIALLY BOB ROCK had his work really cut out for him and it was the hardest part of making a CRUE record and hearing this now,definately makes sense and this is just one track!!not to mention on DR FEELGOOD u can tell that they most likely brought in BOB ROCK for the vocals cuz VINCE sounds quite a bit different then on previous albums,so I'm gonna assume they really edited the crap out of this album so they could bring out his BEST vocal for basically imo,each line,if not each word!!also pretty well known that BOB ROCK also plays Bass and not knockin Nikki and hes a great song writer but even up until this record could BARELY play Bass and if u listen to old crue records the Bass Is turned WAY DOWN and of course TOMMY LEE was/is good enough to make up some of the difference as well as CRUE wanting the guitar to be out in front and MICK gets my vote as the most underrated of all time!!
