There's something really fun about watching devs cheer on their game's final boss to defeat streamers live!
It would be amazing if the devs added a mode where Supergiant devs could mess with streamers live (similar to Twitch integration). It would be great for the community and the streamer as well.
That must be From Software's daily enjoyment
@@AuspexAO ... Ya mean like... Dev controlled boss rush mode? Oh yeah, it'd be awesome if there were dev specific game breaking troll moves that are exclusive to that. >)X^D
That's why the Demon's Souls servers were up for as long as they were :) @@JoonasSariola

I’m amazed by the level of composure and self discipline these guys keep to maintain healthy working hours and pace to not burn themselves out, understanding that it’s a long run, not a sprint. As funny as it sounds, it takes a lot of maturity and self control to just simply rest and not obsessively overwork, when you’re working on a passion project and feel all sorts of anxiety. Big respect.
It is neither composure nor discipline. It's actually the extreme strict pro-union commie labor laws of California, NorCal most of all.
they're some of the most veteran devs around, they know how to get it done
It's not just self-discipline and this is why "indie devs" are so importantf for the industry: the publicly traded game dev companies have a fiduciary duty to maximize profits for their shareholders. That often means a rapid release of games, that are often multi-sequel franchises and/or infused front-to-back with microtransactions and loot boxes. ActiVision isn't gonna take the risk of developing a brand-new IP from the ground up when they can just publish another entry in the COD series instead.
It's so interesting to me how different the BTS stuff at Supergiant is vs Moon Studios. They're two of the best indie studios and both have long anticipated games launching in open access within the next few months, but Supergiant BTS is such a wholesome and healthy working environment while Moon is a toxic and horrible place to work that just happens to have a philosophy that is toxic to people but ends up with really good games
@@apersonwhomayormaynotexist9868 I just think Moon Studios has great staff that is held back by the philosophy
I'm coming back after the announcement of Hades 2. I wanted to re-immerse myself in the magical world of Hades... Really hoping Noclip does a new documentary with Supergiant.
same here! this is one my noclips faves for sure.
I hope too
Although I'd definitely watch it, it's probably not the best use of their resources. It'd probably have a lot of stuff in common with this documentary and not a lot of added value, although there's bound to be some story here and there that is cool to know about (like the 404 problem in this episode)
I love that the game studio is driving the narration. Don't get me wrong, I love when Danny or another noclip creators narrate their videos but this is a nice change and it shows you're trying something new. It feels like we're truly a fly on the wall. Also, the 90 min play test meetings, reviewing bugs and experiences are awesome. What a great way to collaborate on a game.
Thanks, really glad to hear it! Myself (Danny) and Jeremy talked a lot about how we wanted to communicate the story most authentically. Having the studio drive the story and talking directly to the camera was something we planned out with Jeremy conducting screen-tests in pre-production to ensure it would feel right. It's always been the plan to use me as little as possible in the docs (it's why we've never filmed my questions for instance) and this was the next step we needed to make in fulfilling that goal. So this is a relief to hear! Thanks! :)
There's no harm in experimenting with the idea of filming you in some interviews if it makes sense. It would be something different for the channel and we all know you do fine on camera. It would probably also help those of us understand how to hold yourself when conducting the interview, even though you have spoken to that in the past. Something to consider if you're looking for a new approach.
Wouldn't be surprised if it's "Dev Ops" I think it's called. A lot of older systems were "waterfall", one direction development which had it's pro's and con's. Now it's cyclical, so that all parts of the game get combed over multiple times before it gets shipped; Also, allows them to catch things mid-stride and track changes in versions way more effectively. :) I used to work in Game Development QA in San Francisco, some really awesome people work there. Literally talent on every corner of that city.
I'd like to have both styles in their content for sure. It gains my attention and keeps me interested in the updates.
"I agree, this is some quality documentary content. Especially for free.
It seriously makes me happy to see these guys with the hindsight that Hades is a 10/10 legendary tier roguelike
Yeah! It makes me want to go back and tell them "hey, no worries. Hades will go down as one of the greatest roguelikes ever made. You did it." And now that Hades II is coming out I can't wait to see how they shoot for 11/10
I'm getting second hand anxiety from a video of over 2 years ago about the release of the game that I've now played for over 50 hours and loved. This is how you know you've nailed in the documentary department, real intimate view inside this team which deserves all the success and recognition they're getting.
Man missed real documentaries about development! The 2000s were full of good movie documentaries showing real struggles, and then it was like all the companies suddenly realized at the same time they could withhold footage for later (unecessary) releases. Disney in particular was the worst at this--any "documentary" included in their disks was so clean and PRd that it felt like an advertisement for the film. And short at that.
I want grit, I want to see the exhaustion and hope, I want the pitfalls and triumphs! I want to see the actual *development.*
Good to know. I’ll save this video for when I beat Hades, which I’ve only just bought yesterday. It’s great so far!
Darren Korb's music just doesn't stop being absolutely amazing. It just doesn't.
It's one of those situations where the game studio is as readily identified by the music their games have been graced with, as their own logo or game title art.
Yeah Transistor was just goosebumps form top to bottom
Aa@@thant0s
Literally one minute in and I already love it
yesss
Hey Jacob! Love your stuff man!
nice ending, with my favorite transistor song. man, the supergiant music is just god-tier
My favorite too. Ending anything with "Old Friends" is practically cheating. It adds so much dramatic weight.
Supergiant's music and Logan's voice is the subliminal drug that keeps us coming back for more of their games.
I love how humble the devs are in this. These guys and girls have released two of the best indie games in the last decade, and still worry about reception for their products. Excellent series thus far.
Master craftspeople!
Just two?
Maybe I'm a fanboy but all their games have special places in my heart.
Okay, to clear things up : Yes, it was a bug, but i actually won another run right after ! Incredible game, incredible Video, it was an amazing discovery for me !
Oh what's your twitch?
That was such an exhilarating experience! Felt really happy when I saw the relief and happiness they felt when they saw that streamer having fun with their product that they poured their hearts and souls into for years.
This format is definitely a great addition to the already top notch documentaries. Thanks for the astounding work Danny! That Patreon pledge is definitely worth it :)
Thanks for watching!
Wow I’m so glad this was made omg!!!! Thank you! Running to episode 2
Wild to see gibi on a hades video haha
Loved your playthrough Gibi!
This is really cool. My brother has been talking up Hades a lot recently and it got me curious into seeing what it was all about besides what he had told me. I just discovered this channel and this is the content I love! Game documentaries filled to the brim with heart and soul! The production levels are so amazing, I’m surprised you don’t just have these go straight to Netflix or DVD! You provide that level of quality, for free (with ads)! New sub, new fan!
Thanks so much, we're delighted to have you! Just so you know we don't actually put adds on the videos either. (although sometimes we can't help it if somebody else monetizes the video but we work hard to not let that happen). Welcome, and thanks for watching :)
@@NoclipDocs Ah, I didn’t notice cause I’ve been using CZcams Premium. I hope that even on non-monetized videos you get a cut of the subscription since Google doesn’t have to worry about advertisers.
Bro,play it
@@stevenbard8026 Oh I have been playing it! Last time I was so close to finishing off the final boss, but then I died! But that’s what so fun about the game, the challenge!
Man, that Bastion song at the beginning just gets my jumblies janglin'... whatever that means... but it does it.
Hell yeah. Third song on the Bastion soundtrack, "In Case of Trouble." Darren Korb is a goddamn legend between Bastion and Transistor's soundtracks (have yet to try Pyre but have heard good things). All four of the soundtracks are up on his Spotify if you've got that, I put em on when coding sometimes, way comfy.
You and me both,
You and me both!
Well this ended extremely well. Hades finally made its full release and multiple game reporters and magazines treat it as a Game of the Year candidate at least. So glad to see Supergiant deliver another banger.
I got this game today, but I haven't played it yet. I heard it was really good though, so I'm looking forward to it.
I'll be waiting for it to exit early access, but love the look of the game supergiant
also that vegeta shirt is rocking
I'm the same, I'm thinking do they want us to play an early access version or not? I really want the full experience as the devs envision it and when I think of early access I envision it more being come play our game and help us out with testing stuff rather than this is the experience we envisioned
@@Keregosh what they failed to explain is that the final version is still a rogue-like game, so if you expect the 1.0 version to be a tradition single player beginning-to-end Supergiant game you'll probably be disappointed. They are doing something like Dead Cells but with their pedigree. Im still not sure if I'm gonna wait or not, because I would like to have it on Steam.
No I understood that it would be a rogue-like games. Just looking at the trailer at first I was thinking, this seems like a game that is more generic. However since I know this is supergiant games I'm hoping their take will explore some new stuff. I generally like rogue-likes, Rogue Legacy and Dead Cells i still play to this day :)
Same, but my reasoning for that is, I just want to have all my supergiant games in a neat location in steam. Also I love you indei, pls keep being awesome!
k
As a Pole, I love a phrase 'Taking a trip to Poland'
gotta add some polish in poland!!!
OH THAT FANART WAS MADE BY MY FRIEND @7:15 I'm so glad they still have it! She's going to be so excited!
The people of Supergiant are extremely enduring, passionate, and genuine people and it shows in their work. I own all of their games and enjoyed each one immensely. Thank you very much.
I genuinely have not found a rogue-like I enjoyed before playing Hades. This game is freaking amazing and makes me want to try out their earlier work too. This dev team just earnt themselves a new fan.
roguelikes slap tho
After playing Hades, I picked up Dead Cells and loving it as well. Both games go well together
Bastion and Transistor. The combat in Bastion can get a little clunky but man, the overall experience of the game was just amazing. It's still my favorite game from Supergiant just because of how amazing that first experience is.
Bruh have you tried The Binding of Isaac?
I'm from the future, who started playing at 1.0
Same here and man do I love it
Joining the club a bit late but damn, they did a good job!
Hi there, started at 1.0 and I think it might be the greatest game ever made. It's so amazing seeing it get made here.
This is your best work to date. Greg’s quote at the very end of the video rang really true - this makes me desperately want to learn to make games now
"We want to make games that spark your imagination like the games you played as a kid." You MADE the games that sparked my imagination as a kid!
This is beautiful. Love supergiant and getting this inside look is priceless. Stay awesome supergiant, and thanks noclip for this series.
You have totally nailed my feelings with this video. Super cool insight!
Watching this makes me miss the pre-corona times.
I totally feel ya. I almost can't imagine just being able to chill with people without someone freaking out about corona.
It's wild to think about the way games are developed and delivered these days. Something can be announced and put live and within hours the developers can be watching a streamer playing their game and getting feedback.
Supergiant is one of my favorite indie developers and I want to see them succeed, but I'm probably going to avoid Hades until it's closer to complete just because of the frustrations that go along with Early Access.
Abbreviated Reviews you can buy it now, but play later. Just to support them, if they are truly one of your favorites. Hopefully game is not expensive.
honestly it's probably the most complete early access game I've ever played. ive dunked probably like 30 hrs already and I the only 2 things I noticed was 1 conversation didn't have voice over yet, and an enemy got stuck.
Hey folks. We're excited to go on this journey with our community as we continue to cover the development of Hades throughout its time in Early Access. If you have any questions you'd like us to ask the team or specific areas of development you are interested in, please let us know in the comments. And if you want to watch some more from the team at Supergiant consider becoming a Patron (or CZcams Channel Member) to get access to our first Delete Scenes episode later this week. www.patreon.com/noclip
Thanks so much, we hope you enjoyed the first episode.
Hearing that guy's voice is unmistakable. All the Game Spot reviews.
I knew I heard that voice somewhere before
yeah lol i was like "whoa its the old school gamespot review guy" when he came on
Greg is a legend
Yes as i was watching the review i quickly looked up supergiant on wikipedia and ctrl f'ed greg haha
as stater by others, hades is probably their best game to date. they took everything that was good from bastion, transistor, and pyre and polished it into something that's better than most AAA titles.
... I can almost hear his soul leaving the body while remembering - "The trailer starts playing, but the URL 404s!" D^B(
Came back to rewatch the series now that I've played the game post launch on Switch. Thanks for the great content.
playing it on the switch since version 1.0 . im addicted. I played it 70 hours in just one week. no end in sight yet
The part with the streamer at the end was so cool.
Thank you !
Greetings from Poland :D We gamers, love to see polished games, especially in current state of gamedev around the world. We encourage all of you to come here for more polish ;)
12:15 Shoutout to keeping your bed bath & beyond coupons in the nintendo switch dock
"Gavin's car would routinely break down from not being operated for many days at a time"
Don't think they realized at the time how relatable this line would become.
Wow this game is way older than I thought. I saw this game on the Nintendo eShop for $20 and bought it on a whim bc I love Greek mythology. Wow never expected alllllll of this
The choice to reward the player with extra darkness by using a random weapon was a brilliant move, it made me use all the weapons in the game and it was a delight in doing so, without that small incentive I prob would have stuck with one due to choice paralysis. This game is incredible.
That's one of the thingsI love most about Supergiant's design: findings effective ways to make using all the game system's rewarding, rather than punishing you for not doing it. I think Transistor and Pyre were even better in that regard.
Came back to this vid after playing the Switch release for the first time, and I gotta say, this game is AMAZING. Great job Supergiant, and thanks Noclip for the doc!
This is literally the first game I ever bought in Early Access. That's due to the trust in the studio to deliver a game that I know I will enjoy, as I already did with all of their previous games.
And it's great. The art and audio are excellent, the combat is snappy, the writing toes the line between funny and serious perfectly and I feel a steady progression in my abilities. I died to the first "mini-boss" encounter like five times until I figured out the pattern and how to deal with the enemies and overcame them not because of my passive bonuses but because I got better at the encounter. Same with the first boss. I can now reliably get past them every single time.
All of the weapons already in here feel very different yet balanced. I basically always take the one suggested to me by the +10% bonus darkness and had great results with all of them. The way you have to adapt on the fly based on the powers offered leads to different playstyles, sometimes relying on souped-up Casts, while other times preferring the Special or Normal attacks. One annoyance I had was with how long the shield can stay out when you throw it in the second zone, so hopefully that'll change. I also didn't find the Ares powers to be as useful as some of the other ones, though I haven't played with them nearly as much as with the other gods' powers (due to the perceived weakness).
Also, Dusa
It's crazy to think of all the different games that Noclip could have covered and they pick the one that would be THE game of 2020. Pretty awesome for all of the us millions of fans.
'Old friends' always gives me chills, even after all this time
Totally agree!!!
37:08 Zagreus emerges from the orange juice springs.
I bought this for $20 mostly based of how likeable the devs were in this video since I wasn't a huge fan of Bastion or Transistor. And off course the amazing art and music. But I'm so glad I did. Well worth it.
Is that dude using a Switch dock as a letter holder at 12:12 ?
I had to pause the video because of that, this is hilarious!
Nice catch
Good eye!! Can’t play BOTW until you pay your bills😂

Haha, paused and came straight to the comments to find this
I’m not sure if many other developers do this, but I really love the way Super Giant handles their internal play-testing. Having everyone play alone and then having all departments meet to give feedback on all aspects of the game seems really constructive. I normally can’t stand early-access but I may just have to pick this one up.
Super cool to watch this in between playing the v1.0 of the game. In my opinion, all their work paid off. This is my favourite Supergiant game. And I loved all their other games.
Hades is a great game imo, arguably the most polished early access I've ever played. well done guys & keep up the works!
Really cool video!
Interesting points for me as a game developer :
- Weekly review process (8:30)
- Monthly internal playtest process (12:35)
- Polishing (18:20)
- What we fight for (29:50)
Guys... This is one of the best games I've ever played. I haven't had a game that I couldn't put down since I was a child some 20+ years ago.
I keep telling myself just one more run... Just one more run. Before I know it... It's nearly 5am and I've been playing for over 6 hours straight. Very well done. Thank your work
You can tell the love they put into this. Got it on switch today and LOVE IT!
"Great intention and gravitas." I felt it, Amir; their paths were wearing unseen grooves!
Words cannot explain how much I respect these people. I will remember all of their games for the rest of my life.
This is, hands down, the best channel on CZcams.
Bought Hades last year, just completed it 100% during the Christmas holiday, amazing title!
Just amazing! Love the behind the scenes look, certainly looking forward for more! Love you, Supergiant
These guys are brilliant game devs! Love all their stuff... Got this too and it is a fantastic blend between Transistor and Dead Cells. From one dev to another, keep it up!
Hades to yr character in the new game Hades:
"BOY"
Super lovely and ultimately uplifting. Bravo Supergiant, and bravo Noclip for portraying their journey in such an uncluttered, pure fashion. The countless clever editing and coverage choices really make this a joy to watch. :)
With the announcement of Hades 2, going in for a third rewatch! Incredible documentary series.
I rewatch this biannually 😂
Having bought 1.0 and played and finished a run I'm rewarding myself with watching through these docs through. Really excellent work by Danny and the team. I really like how the edit is given the space to breathe - it really humanises the staff involved. Well done NoClip on another great series and well done to supergiant for a fantastic beast of a game!
Excelent documentary as always, Danny! Congrats to you and all your team, mate! I'm really looking forward to watch the next episodes!
I'm gettitng shivers just watching this,
reminds me of my own experiences during the month before my game released on Steam.
Well done NoClip on capturing all these feelings.
Also a bravo to the dev team for being so open to discuss all this stuff, perfectly encapsulating the pure chaos and pleasure a game release creates.
Thank you so much Noclip & Supergiant. This is incredibly helpful, inspirational, and motivating. I can't wait to see the rest of this!!
This is my favorite video game documentary series. I have seen this whole batch of videos at least 10 times. It is so inspiring and so exciting to watch. Noclip, amazing job! Now I need to play Hades!
This is a dope video. Great work capturing these moments.
It was a really nice message Greg had at the end, thank you Noclip and Supergiant for allowing us to peer into the game creating process and get inspired by your work
Awesome. really looking forward to the next episode. This is why I started my dev diary videos and streaming my current game dev project. Great stuff, I can wait for Ep #2.
This was so enjoyable to watch. That heartbreaking opening ("It was a 404" - oh man) and heartwarming ending was an amazing start to this series. Fantastic work! I was initially a little iffy about the lack of smooth Irish narration, but I figured this was that development team's story and in that respect I really like the way this was presented :D
FANTASTIC first episode. Love Supergiant, love you guys, this is a great collaboration. Thank you for making this. 😀
Possibly my favorite episode yet!!! You did an amazing job encapsulating the emotions of the dev team, and well....we got to go along for the ride and it was kick ass!! Top shelf!! and hats off to the team @ Supergiant for making such an amazing and thoughtful game!
It's so emtional watching this after Hades 2 announcement in The Game Award, such an inspiration for a lot of indie game studio ♥
Excited for this, very interesting to see the inner workings.
Bastion, Transistor and Pyre are three of my all-time favorite narrative indie games. Pyre especially. That game was utterly unique in the strictest sense. I absolutely devoured it.
I never quite finished Transistor, but I should go back to it.
I really hope Hades is coming to PS4? Ive only just started this video so maybe they say at some point? Very much looking forward to this series, as well. I'll be staying tuned!!
Transistor is the best for me out of three. Unbelievable game. The atmosphere, sound, art, everything. All of their games are amazing though. I wish characters in Pyre would talk all their lines, i liked that language to be honest.
Oh, definitely finish Transistor!! It is MARVELOUS!
@@princessthyemis I actually redownloaded it last night and I'm trying it again right now 😁
Great first episode! That was fun, and a nice look at things heading up to launch. Excited to see what happens as it goes!
This is so inspiring! Thank you for making this series and thank Supergiant for making their games!
I LOVE THIS STUFF. I love watching how freakibg hard they work to make something special. I've been a supergiant fan for a long time and I'm so pumped to see more of this series!
THANK YOU SO MUCH for captions that are well-written. Huge accessibility boon! 🥰
I was applying for a 3D modeling job at Super Giant Games only a few months ago. I was late for a week and was super frustrated;
To see what I could have worked on If only I had had the time (and luck) pains me.
Super Giant Games is amazing; and kudos to Darren Korb - what a LEGEND of a composer. One of my all time faves.
Supergiant is 3 for 3 so far in knocking it out of the park. Looking SO forward to Hades
This is my favourite Noclip episode yet, amazing work team!
Can't wait for the rest of the journey.
Beautiful documentary. I’ve always loved Supergiant, and I can’t wait to see where hades goes next. Good work, noclip; and good work Supergiant.
Thank you very much for the subtitles and for the documentary video ofcourse!
one of the most inspiring things I've ever watched in my whole life! you are one of the best! :) keep up the good work.
This was easily one of my favourite docs that you've put out. Can't wait for more episodes!
Great job Jeremy and Danny! Looking forward to the rest of the series and playing Hades once its out of early access.
This is a fantastic series of docs. Awesome seeing the passion and hard work that went into Hades. Makes you appreciate the awesome game even more.
Amazing episode Danny! Hades is a masterpiece! Having so much fun playing the game on PS5, love the art style, gameplay is so polished, truly a classic game 👏👏👏
lmao "going to Poland" Shout out from Poland guys, love yall
It's the land with the most polish!
"Polish that sausage!"
I just copped this game this week and I can't believe how polished and addictive it is!!!
honestly the flow of the story makes me feel like starting at the beginning doesn't feel like I'm starting at the beginning again!
Thanks for creating a fantastic game! and for it's price on Steam it's a steal!!! once I get more funds I'm buying all your games to support the devs so they can create another kick ass game!
Making the moment you get dropped back at the beginning not feel dull or demoralizing is a key aspect of making a roguelike feel good, and Supergiant absolutely nails it in Hades. Such a great game.
Thank you no clip for bringing this awesome video from one of the best studios out there. I really hope to see more soon.
Absolutely wonderful series Danny. I'm so excited to see more documentary about what goes on behind the scenes of video games, there just isn't enough. Since Double Fine's own foray into the world of Video Game Documentary Making, I've wished we had more transparency into this sort of thing. It's a really amazing way to feel empathy towards creators and to get even more excited for a game than you already were. I don't think I'd have enjoyed Broken Age half as much if it wasn't for seeing the daily struggles of the team behind it and their pure passion and joy for making a product for their fans. This format is wonderful and I will be pledging on your Patreon as soon as possible.
Watched the documentary. Bought the game. Rewatching the documentary. Noclip and Supergiant Games, titans of their industries.
Love this game and the people behind it!! Great job guys ! Re played it recently had to check more background 😌
That was fantastic! Really looking forward to continuing this series over the next year.
Crazy to come back here after watching the final episode. Congrats to Noclip and Supergiant Games for all the success in the series and the game! I can't believe that we all followed a game become a game of the year
Love this, absolutely fantastic idea to do a documentary like this. Looking forward to the rest.
What an amazing bunch of talented creators! Love the honeycomb design of their studio/office
When your name is "Jen Zee" But you aren't apart of "Gen Z"
This had never occurred to me and now it will never un-occur to me. I hope you're proud of what you've done.
(this is a sorely underrated comment, though, seriously)
