I had many happy hours working at and based at Poulton No 3. Of the nine Boxes and Crossings I worked between 1978-88, this was always my favourite; esp Early turn., with all the Wyre Branch Freights.. I had several crews visit the box to watch the shunt with 25 Target. Apparently it was a unique type of movement. Happier days/nights.

Thanks for capturing these sights before they went forever David. Never to hear the clunk of a dropping signal arm again on that line let alone the clanking of rods from the box. Take care - Chris

Thank you for your comment and sharing those details and memories, the sign was a lovely touch and it must have been a strange feeling to finish the last ever shift. Funny to hear someone was interested in buying!

Hi, it's so sad to see the boxes & semaphore signals being abolished. I can't believe that Network Rail have demolished them, they were surely listed structures, I would have thought? The same has just happened on the North Wales coast line, re-signalling with 6 boxes closed.

poulton no3 was a listed building , network rail applies to wyre council and english heritage and surprise they got to demolish it !
so much for listed buildings eh .

another note of carleton crossing signalbox , since demolishion and the line re opening , the crossing barriers fail to re open after a train has crossed ,quite regular , painfull delays on the roads . now there is a man in a van to sort it out when it goes wrong .
no saving on money here , should have kept the signalbox , never had any problems as it was .
as of 8 june still buses replacing trains and lots of delays and cancellations to the trains .
if your going to blackpool or trying to leave blackpool .. good luck its hopless since the upgrade . utter mess up they have made !

Poulton signal-box was quite a modest structure that coukd have been dismantled for reassembly on a "heritage line", with or without the signalling-equipment.
That new gantrywork for the overhead power-lines looks elephantine and visually obtrusive: was it designed to some E.U. specification ?

I had a negative e-mail exchange with Wyre Council to try to get at least one box saved, but his view was- Well what can WE do"?

So what happened to the semaphore signals? Did they go to some kind of preserved railway organisation?

Poulton station once had the longest platform in the world! Absolutely true fact.

Indeed - I believe it was so long it connected with Kirkham and Salwick stations?

A very interesting study, David, marking a bit of history. On the technical side, a first-class demonstration of Bokeh at c. 03:45. Kind regards, Bob.

Thank you very much Bob - greatly appreciated. Can't bit of bokeh, and that situation seemed to lend itself to it. It looks as though the station has retained some of its atmosphere but the improvements will certainly have eroded some of its special character.

Nice video David. The times are a changing. Sorry to see the old signals disappearing. You were a night owl then. Kind regards C&A

Many thanks C&A - they certainly are, although in many ways it's perhaps surprising how long semaphore signalling has survived. I blame the short days for the night shots! ;) Many thanks, David.
