I have an old garage door (metal) which is currently not painted, Do i need to prime before painting? I am going to paint light blue to match our front door? Thanks

Hi there, the paint used on metal garage doors is formulated to provide a tough and durable finish that's highly resistant to flaking and discolouration. Primer might not be needed for all types of top coat paint, more information will be found on the manufacturing instructions. Preparation is always key for a good finish. However, at your own discretion, you could use any multi-surface sealant that's suitable for outdoors, such as this bit.ly/3uyAHxq. Although it's not something we would typically recommend. Does the old paint from the garage door need to be totally bare/back to metal?
Hi, there. Thanks for your questions! The old paint doesn't need to be completely gone from the garage door however any flaking or uneven patches should be removed & the surface cleaned appropriately (as shown in the video) to get rid of anyhting that might prevent the new paint from sticking to the surface properly. I need to paint a metal shed (9x5) the whole thing, these little cans are expensive with small coverage, is there another product I can use?
@Old School Not the whole thing just the patches that needed doing. I will have another look for something this summer.

Surely you should paint garage doors with Hammerite Direct to Galvanised Metal Paint instead?
@@bandq You should inform people to use Direct to Galvanised Metal Paint if the door isn't already painted.
I normally use a advanced multi surface primer for all metals then use a exterior primer undercoat then satin or gloss don't use stuff like hammerite especially on a garage door it's terriable stuff to use coverge ant great and you also need a extra thinner like celloius thinners or hammerite thinners go's gluppy very quickly.
