Half Life Alyx was my first Half Life game

- Half Life Alyx is probably the best VR game of all time. Virtual Reality games have a habit of either being cheap ports or just great tech demos, but Half Life Alyx was neither. Half Life Alyx was an amazing game and VR only served to make it better. It never leaned to heavily on it, but it certainty took advantage of it. I know it's unforgivable that I haven't played Half Life or Half Life 2. but I hope that I can be somewhat forgiven, and I hope you got a chortle out of this video. thank you for watching, thank you for reading this description.
Side note, if you want to see me play through the JEFF level without any editing, basically live, I am going to put that up on my second channel which I just made now for the first time... / @habie2475 - Hry

fun fact: the bottles dont actually have anything inside of them. one of the developers just made (i think it was post launch) a super convincing shader for the bottles so it looks as if they had liquids inside of them
but it's all about the illusion
I'd be more surprised if they *had* liquid in them. Simulating liquid in a VR shooter game is inefficient as hell.
Sine waves
I've collectively spent a good hour playing with the liquid in those bottles, seriously, that dev was a mad genius and I'm still amazed trying to understand how they pulled that off
Even funner fact: there is no bottle it's a vr game on a screen
The fact that you slowly reloaded your gun after falling over and killing an enemy is so in character for the tone of Half Life. It's like, "Yeah, just got done killing someone, give me a minute to reload while I'm face down on the ground." I love it.
That was some of my favorite parts

@@firestuka8850 I would deffinitly love a Halo game built from the ground up for VR, Microsoft has taunted us with a short wave shooter "demo" game available on the WMR headsets
@@firestuka8850 I feel like we should appreciate the fact that we have a 3rd half life installment
They didn't add a full body on purpose, the more realistic you make a game, the more the unrealistic stuff sticks out.
tbh I would've preferred having a full body. As much as Blade & Sorcery can be janky, I forget that the ingame body isn't my real body most of the time.
Full bodies have a lot of work ahead before they're more than a novelty. B&S and Boneworks both suffer from issue that is visibility. VR already tunnel visions me hard enough without needing to do neck gymnastics to just look down past a full body. And I'm tall so it's extra weird when the height detaches and you stand there in a half squat when I'm just relaxing my posture.
without perfect full body tracking a full ik body in vr is far less immersive. certainly cool. but not realistic. i would be curious to see if that changed with perfect full body tracking so everything is 1:1. but as it is i think they made the right choice with just physics based floating hands.
@@The1337guy1 Still, I do appreciate the effort. Having a full body in Boneworks can be counter-intuitive, but being able to jump on enemies until they yell in pain is always fun. It just needs more time to develop, and I see why it wouldn't be in Alyx.
I dislike full body because most games that have them place items on the in-game-hip instead MY hip, so if I’m crouched in a shooter and need to find a magazine from my in-game-hip and my “body” is folded the wrong way, then I can’t reach the mag. I personally have this as a huge problem in Boneworks, Onward, and Zero Caliber. The games that solve not needing to reach for my in-game hips have been games like Population One with float-load mags, and Stormland with weapons being attached to the specific viewpoints such as where my real hips and real shoulders are. It’s ok for my character to have a body, but don’t make it so I have to play twister when I’m crouched just for something that I could just grab from my real hip.
Good....
Now play the rest of the games.
Agree
Even better! Play Half Life 2 in VR through the VR mods in GMod with some of the vr weapons they have for it. Most of it is infact playable with some settings adjusted and GMod alone in VR is low key pretty fun as well
Ahhhh yes ceiling pimples
They are call barnicals
in vr
Stay AWAY from HL2 vr by way of GMod. It's an unplayable mess. Especially for a first timer. HL1VR is good, definitely. Wait for the real HL2VR mod.
People generally don't want Alyx to be the first game just for MASSIVE spoiler reasons. Other than that, totally agree. Especially your point about boneworks. Alyx was intended to be people's introduction to VR. Valve succeeded splendidly with that. How ever, I wish they pushed it just a bit further. It makes me enjoy boneworks a lot more than alyx for the gameplay alone.
Also, I hope you have caught up on the other Half-Life games since this video LOL
At this point you can't have spoilers about HL and HL2. It's like expecting people to be surprised by "Luke, I am your father!"

BUT WHAT DOES IT TASTE LIKE?? --Russell
i just love Russell, he is like an unserious version of Cave Johnson.
3:22 While this is true, I feel like in most of my time with Alyx, I just naturally moved around obstacles like one would expect anyways. I imagine Valve realized that, and also decided having full arm collision ended up hurting the experience more than helping it- imagine being in a shoot out but then not being able to throw a grenade because your virtual elbow that you cant control catches on a brick.
This is actually very true, you CAN physically move to do every action. Just because it prompts you to use a jump/teleport doesn't mean you actually have to do it that way. There is even a large vent later in the game that you can remove the panel on and have to crawl into, you find a live headcrab next to a hardhat, and after killing the headcrab you can crawl to a vertical shaft where you can stand up and get a resin. If you try to use any of the 'normal' movement types to get in you are kept outside the vent.
Based on just the controlers they can't figure out where your arms are really. Having floaty hands was the greatest move they did for immersion.
Well this game was in development before boneworks was around and was always built with teleporting and floating hands which was the standard at the time of developing
But VR players got more and more used to things like having a full body
Using melee weapons and smooth locomotion
One advantage alyx has though is that its very accesible if you want someone to try VR for the first time
@@bzqp2 Boneworks does a VERY good job of it, you stop paying attention to the little differences between your real elbows and your VR elbows after a while, but you're aware enough of them that you move in such a way your arms don't collide with stuff. The brain is a strange organ, it'll figure stuff out even when it doesn't make sense
@@sirspamalot4014 Idk, I like Boneworks for the fact that it's doing all that full body physics stuff, these systems are what make Boneworks fun.
At the same time tho, so much of that game is just trying to get past all the jank.
Valve has a history with physics in their games, but I think they generally don't like to rely on systematic game design to such an extend. Everything you can see and do in Alyx is pretty much perfectly polished, I definitely can't say the same about boneworks.
and the fact that you have to cover your mouth IRL so Jeff doesnt hear you, and that wit hthe valve knuckle controllers it feels like the needles are going into you when you get health, this game was one of the best experiences i have ever had.

love the cinema jokes at the start. keep those up, and the rest
Obviously I don't watch your videos because I agree with them, but man I cannot disagree more about having a body in VR. Since there is no actual full body tracking having a body that doesn't match my actual body takes me out of vr so much more than having floating hands.
Editing to say, obviously this is not a dig on the video. Top notch as always 👌
I can totally agree! Having a body in a vr game should be entirely dependent on if you have full body trackers. I don’t, and games that give you an untracked, confusing meat torso are way less immersive
Interesting, I'm the exact opposite. I much prefer having a full body like in Boneworks/Blade amd Sorcery rather than floaty hand in almost every other VR game. I don't have full body tracking (yet) but seeing my forarm and elbows in game allow me to completely forget about my real form and focus on my in game actions more.
i would agree other than all the times I have fallen off things because I was looking over a ledge and fell because I didn't know where my virtual body was.
@@Penut63 yeah that is true, I’ve been there... some games have a little shadow on the ground letting you know where you are, but videogame standards for vr are still emerging
I don't really pay attention either way. But in certain games, I definitely prefer having a body; skyrim is waaaaay better with a body and I don't know why haha (and I don't have full body btw)

Damn, I didn't think I was that fast. Your probably gonna see this, so thanks for making great videos man. Your gonna go far.
Unless you have full body tracking, having a body outline when you look down is difficult. In Pavlov there's specific pouches you have to grab things from and when your body is further back from the outline in VR it's then difficult and breaks the immersion
I think HLA is an incredible first half-life experience. It's one of the most impressive games I've ever played

Your reaction to the antlion grub getting crushed was priceless.
On a serious note, I've grown up on the Half-Life games which are and always will be my favorite fictional series of any medium, to the extent that they are my number 1 inspiration for my own creative drive as an aspiring author. So after 10 years of no new Half-Life games after such an infamous cliff hanger, it took a bit of a toll on my mental state and creative drive. I started accepting that I would never see a continuation of the series that grew up watching my dad and brother play before finally playing it myself. Then I saw the trailer for Half-Life Alyx and I had to do everything in my power to not become a bumbling mess of joyful tears while at work. Fast forward a few months, and I'm sitting on the floor of my bedroom with an Index strapped to my face, half laughing, half crying because I finally played a new Half-Life game and GOD DAMN WAS IT THE BEST GAME I'VE EVER PLAYED.
As a life long Half-Life fanatic, HLA is beyond special to me. It re-vitalized a part of me that was damn near dead after 13 years of waiting for a new Half-Life game, without any official acknowledgement that one was indeed coming.

On subject, I agree it certainly could be done with the right use of bass and sound frequency. Not that I know a vast amount on the subject but it's certainly doable - I'm thinking along the lines of those bone conduction headphones that allow you to hear music through vibrations without actually wearing them over your ears. No reason that logic couldn't be applied to some kind of suit or floor surface to simulate ground shaking, or perhaps your ship's engines in a space sim, that would be really neat!
