These bits always reminds me of a short they watched on an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 called CENTURY 21 CALLING (1962), which predicted such innovations as turning on your air conditioner, oven or lawn sprinklers by phone...but not cordless phones, cellphones or the internet.
To be fair to the Tricorders/communicators on Star Trek, they go from the surface of a planet to a ship in orbit and still manage to work as long as there isn't some severe interference.
