"I'm so wet" Well, you ARE underwater
I need a formal apology for having to see the word "mermussy" and having it stuck in my head.
*Mermussy
@@Topdoggie7 thanks Topdoggie7. Now after a month of not seeing that word, i had to see it twice.
@@happystoryfamily4830 Happy to help you remember it's mermussy with two m's. ;3
no, no, it's MERMUSSY.
@@dangernoodle9961 its been 3 months. I'll correct it 😭😩
The “darling it’s better down where it’s wetter” took me the fuck out. I’m deceased. Good day to you all 🤣🤣🤣☠️☠️☠️
So I know this video is a week old, but hey I've never been punctual. I recently read Skin of the Sea by Natasha Bowen. It's a historical fantasy that explores mermaids using West African mythology. I enjoyed it. And the romance was cute. Hopefully it's closer to what you're looking for!
yess that book was really good! glad to see that someone else also enjoyed it, since mermaid fantasy is pretty hard to come by in ya ^^
I hate when that happens 💔 when there’s soooo much potential but it just is failed by pussy choices and the writing
I think reading the word, “mermussy” has possibly ruined my weekend. 🤣
I have read thousands of books in my lifetime and have never once wanted to know about character’s poops. Not once.
Thank you for the giggles. You legit made me laugh.
I really liked The Deep by Rivers Solomon, which is a sapphic mermaid novella
I loved the deep! I’m looking for a more adventurous mermaid fantasy though. I’ve read and liked the deep, into the drowning deep, and a song below water. Still looking for a mermaid fantasy that I love.
@@ReadswithRachel Oh right!
Shark babies are called "Pups"... Is that an "Easter Egg" reason why the Hounds are called hounds?
So much anattomy for something that doesn't even exist! I have to say that 'mermussy' is an amazing word though. I'm always on the lookout for mermaid stories, too, but good ones are so hard to find, I wonder why. I recently read In Deeper Waters and really liked it, but the focus is not on the merpeople. It definitely doesn't have anyone talking about missing body parts, so I recommend!
Oh my GOD, this is kind of wild body horror
I really liked The Mermaid, the Witch, and the Sea by Maggie Tokuda-Hall. It’s YA but it’s got some mature themes and the magic system and world building were really cool! And it is sapphic and wonderful.
That’s been on my tbr way too long
If it helps, the venom is supposed to replaced the blood in edward cullens, um, member....
A good Sapphic mermaid book series is Ice Massacre by Tiana Warner.
what the what. I'm a changed person but not for the better.
It took me longer than I'd like to admit to notice that the cover actually had a woman on it. I legit thought it was just a picture of rippling waves and when you mentioned it, I was trying to figure out what was wrong. It took a while, but I caught on.
Breathlessly by Heather Relken might be something you’re interested in. I’ve not read it, but it is something I plan on reading. A book I have read, and do recommend though is Mermaid by Carolyn Turgeon. You may like that one actually.
Edit: Okay actually hearing what happened in the book…ngl I found that kinda funny. XD to be fair, if I started turning into a mermaid suddenly, I’d probably be thinking the same thing.
after this book into the drowning deep stops being terrifying and starts being a glimmer of hope
you are too good of a human being to think you might find something of substance on KU
is it worth being sex positive if the sex that is positively depicted is THAT
"send it to my friends" I DID NOT CONSENT TO BE SENT THAT
This is only slightly related but I would give the world to have a book with fat mermaids!
Why? Obesity is a serious health issue, not something that should be celebrated.
All I could think about during this was The Lighthouse haha. There's a mermussy in that and I still haven't recovered.
Can confirm. Rachel does love bagels.
Hahahaha 6:47
Try Mira Grant's "Into The Drowning Deep" for a good mermaid horror story. Mira Grant also writes several really good urban fantasy series under her name, Seanan McGuire.
I’m familiar! I’ve read into the drowning deep and enjoyed it.
Ha I just commented to read it too - it’s great!
now I want a bagel and never want to think about magic mussy
Hey Rachel! This was a good video! And my recommendation for good mermaid stories and lore would be the abc show Siren. It only has three seasons unfortunately because it had a lot of potential in my opinion. I cringed when you described the mermussy sex scenes but this book could’ve been great especially with the lore you told us about. I too am in search of the one mermaid book to top them all. I hope you find it 👍🏻
i loved season 1!
@@ReadswithRachel same! I loved how the sirens looked they were amazing.
Bruh!! When you played the little mermaid song I literally screamed GO TO H3LL!! And woke my kid up 😭🤣
Have you read Monstrous Beauty? I remember kinda liking that one. It's not Sapphic though if that's a dealbreaker. If I remember right, there's a rape scene in the beginning that briefly describes a mermussy. I was going to suggest Into the Drowning Deep but I see in the comments you've read that one.
I’ll put it on my list! I will, obviously, try anything at this point
This review is so funny 😆 great job!
I believe Ms. Meyers explained somewhere that the vampire venom replaces and fills in for the functions of blood. So basically a cop out that doesn’t explain why male vampires can still make viable babies, but 🤷♀️.
IIRC, the reason Edward could father Renesme was that his sperm he'd been turned into a vampire with was still... in cold storage, effectively. Which means that this eternal teenage boy went around 100 years without so much as a nocturnal emission. It's very "weird repressed purity culture for guys, too!" and I hate that I know this.
I am simultaneously ready and not ready for this video 😆
"Nothing can come out or go in" ☠☠☠ she really just slipped in that ref--pun totally intended!
😂🤣Just…mermussy!😂🤣 And then it got bad funnier!
But ‘he must save her’ is my first red flag. Like a literal fish needs a bicycle.
Maybe this was an attempt at a distopic viewpoint with body dysphoria?
Let's play a drinking game. For every mermussy take a shot. CHEERS! 😂
This sounds like such body horror tbh
Oh gosh this really feels like a problem I have haha. I keep getting ideas for a setting or minor characters or other small things (which I recall you saying you frequently like even in sjm books), but when it comes to the big building blocks of a story like plot or character arcs, I always end up with stuff like "uhhh there's an evil empire so someone should do something about it" xD
That sounds fun as hell actually, I need to read this!
I'm sorry, I know you're suffering, but hearing Under the Sea during that sex scene fucking sent me.
mermussy is a word that i didn't want to learn today
It's been obvious to me for years that a mermaid's vagina would be on her front side, among her scales, about a handspan below where the scales begin, and about a handspan above her vagina.
If you ask if a mermaid's carpet matches the drapes, the answer is, "The floor is tiled".
Now I'll listen to the review and see if the "mermussy" in the book matches my speculation.
[After watching the video.]
Hmmm.... Not extremely.
This story has some Shadow Over Innsmouth vibes.
I haven't read it yet, but have you read Into the Gray by Margaret Killjoy. Yes that's the last name.
I read that that the vampire venom acts like blood, so Edward Cullen's erections are venomous 😂
I read the first book in Daughters of the Sea Hannah, it was a pretty good book I think, but it is Young Adult and I read it a long time ago.
A friend of mine recommended the Mermaid of the Black Conch by Monique Roffey. I haven't read it yet, but her taste is usually pretty good.
I am disappointed and my day is ruined by the word mermussy existing in the public lexicon.
If you think mermussy is bad, wait until you see the skelenis
Honestly all the (somewhat gross) anatomy stuff if pretty fun. Quirky, if you will.
The Seafarer's Kiss is pretty decent
Have you read "A Song Below Water" by Bethany C Morrow? It's more about sirens than mermaids, so maybe it's not quite what you're looking for, but it's a wonderful read.
I have! I really enjoyed it
I’d recommend “Out of the Blue” by Jason June
Have you tried The Mermaid's Daughter by Ann Claycomb? It's a retelling of The Little Mermaid, and it's adult and sapphic. It's not really horror, but it does have some darker elements.
Am I still catching up on my subscription box? Yes. Did i click on this super fast knowing full well that I will be traumatized bc of your tweet? Yes. Am i ready? No. No i am not
ITS SUCH A WEIRD THING TO FOCUS ON?! WHY DOES SHE NEED TO FOCUS ON THAT ONE BIT
FLOWERING NO NO NO
This sounds so ridiculous that I think I need to try it out 😂 should be a good laugh
The "pussy" to "slit" switch almost feels like commentary, as "her slit" is also used often to refer to ladyparts but almost exclusively in a "men who know nothing about women writing women" sort of situation. Like, the author is almost making fun of the concept of "slit" as a euphemism for lady bits with the whole mermussy thing.
Or I could just be reading waaay too much into this.
Have you tried Siren by Kiera Cass? 3 stars at best but maybe fits the bill? Fortune's Fool by Mercedes Lackey is the only other merfolk book I can think of. 3-4 stars I'd say.
You're really funny!! Good review.
Thank you! I appreciate that
Advice to Authors: Repetition is for things you want your readers to remember. If your book isn't full-on body horror. Stop mentioning freaky things happening to a character's body parts every two seconds. A missing clit isn't sexy. I don't know who lied to this writer. I'm more bothered by the repeated mention of that slit than the mermussy itself. Does the fish have a slit too? Like...why?
Emperor ECTHELION?????? As in, THE TOWER OF ECTHELION?????? THE WHITE TOWER OF GONDOR??? Jesus Christ
Have you read Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant? I love all of her books!
I have, and I love that book I gave it five stars
I own To Kill a Kingdom but its currently in storage in California and I now live in South Carolina so I have not read it yet clearly however sadly I don't think there are good mermaid books! I love mermaids, I say I am one like it's my thing, I have read soooo many and none of them are good some are okay but most are just fumbled ideas and it makes me sad.
I am really late, and you may have read this already, but i didn't see anyone mention this book ( the salt grows heavy ). It isn't set in water, but a mermaid is a main character. I haven't read it yet, but it sounds good from the sample i listened to. I too am always looking for dark mermaid stories
I guess I’m a little freak cuz mermussy got me going 😂
No shame my friend!
🧜🏻♀️ Have you read “The Gloaming” by Kirsty Logan? I went to an event in which the author was interviewed and she was really well spoken and made me want to pick up her book. I haven’t actually read it yet but I do believe it’s a sapphic romance with some eerie vibes… it may be what you’re looking for?! 🧜🏻♀️
in deeper waters by ft lukens is ya i think but it's a super cute m4m mermaid romance that i absolutely loved and recommend, the plot is a little bit batshit but i think that's what makes it fun
If I know the plot is batshit going in I can probably accept it
Have you read Into the Drowning Deep? I’m pretty sure it’s right up your alley - lightly sapphic but also horror that would rival any zombie book. Check it out!
Not sapphic but horror and pretty good - Abe Moss's "Gills" also free on kindle .
in the drowning deep by mira grant!!
have you read into the drowning deep by mira grant?
Yeah I loved it! 5 stars
@@ReadswithRachel ahhh!!! it was so good!!!
Have you tried A Song Below Water?
Yeah I loved it! But I didn’t really find it to be a mermaid fantasy book, it was more of a contemporary
Whenever I eat a bagel, I always think of you 😂
You ma’am will not get the wall ❤
I haven't watched all your videos to see if you have read it but Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant literally has all of the requirements you listed for a mermaid book you want to read. It was fantastic.
I got snapped out of bg listening at the name noelani because I always get suspicious at randomly placed Hawaiian names. This one doesn’t make sense? Sky whale now.
Try the Merman’s Children by Paul Anderson.
I'm sorry, Ecthelion? Like...like Tolkien?
I imagine vampires, having no circulatory system, get boners through sheer willpower. Or telekinesis. Perhaps a complex system of pumps.
I would recommend The Mermaid, The Witch, and The Sea by Maggie Tokuda-Hall. Has cool mermaids some sapphic/trans romance and some very lovely gender fluid rep
Rachel! I know this is an old video but ever since I watched back when it came out for some reason I can't stop thinking about it. Are there any mermaid books you WOULD recommend? Im super curious because I feel like all the ones I have read don't really dig deep enough into what a mermaid society could be or are very very young (looking at you Deep Blue!) but at the same time I dont wanna learn about mermussy lmfao, pls help.
The Deep by Rivers Solomon (5 stars) or To Kill A Kingdom by Alexandra Christo (3 stars)!
@@ReadswithRachel Thank you, you absolute queen!! Love your videos, never stop doing what you are doing
@@ReadswithRachel I’m confused. At the start of the video you dissed “To Kill a Kingdom,” and now you’re giving it 3 stars? What gives?
@@ashleygenova1582what gives is that since I read to kill a kingdom like three years ago I’ve read SO MUCH WORSE since then LMAO and thinking back it’s a 3 in comparison to Lightlark and fourth wing and the night and it’s moon and once upon a broken heart.
I read a YA mermaid series that I loved it's the Waterfire Saga by Jennifer Donnelly which does have some horror, some romance, some politics, I enjoyed it
Oh gods make it stop
I liked Mermaid by Christina Henry
“Inundated by mermussy” 💀 You’re so funny.
It bugs me that Odessa is a city.
I was searching for this comment. Thank you. Somehow I didn't realise it till seeing goodreads review. This is so bizarre. At least it's a port city I guess .. so a connection to water fantasy nonsense can be made. But yeah. To make it part of the series title is so weird to me.
@@prinzessinanka you're very welcome. That was literally all I kept thinking so I had to share and I'm glad someone else gets it.
I enjoyed Into the Drowning Deep - mermaid book with scary, sapphic, death
oh youve already read it!:p
Ugh if you find a dark sapphic mermaid book please let us know 😩💗🧜🏻♀️
You’re looking for SD Simper’s the fate of stars.
Is it bad that I'm low-key interested XD??
Not at all! This book has an audience that will love it
I WANT TO JOIN AN ONLINE BOOK CLUB !!
help!
xoxo 😢
You NEED to read The Deep by Rivers Solomon. I will ALWAYS recommend this book! Pleas, please, 🙏🏼 read it I promise you will like it
BTW there is a queer love
Oh I have! Read it as soon as it came out and I loved it. 5 stars.
It really sounds like the author was just weirdly fascinated with mermaid genitals and how they'd work without having any legs and so decided to write this whole fantasy book as a way to explain her headcanons on mermaid anatomy. I mean not that there's anything wrong with being curious as to how a fantasy creature's anatomy would work, but I feel like she could've written a sort of personal anatomy textbook for herself to keep all these ideas in instead of sharing it with the world under the guise of a fantasy book.
If you want a good story with mermaids then One Piece is a good one because it's one piece
So weird
V
Sameeeee lol
When you've been ruminating on a title for ages and then you find out it's already the title of a terrible book... -_-
So 1st time reading this I have an answer about the twilight. You can kind of piece everything together but instead of blood they have venom running through them in every format AKA there's lava is venom there whatever is going through their blood is venom so if you got a boner it's a little bit of cause that's what he kept talking about how he would bout venom being like a big part of just like physical anatomy within midnight sun
This book sounds pretty cool, I wish it were more gay. Merdudes getting it on in detail. No joke.
ok wait but the prince also has a mermussy? based trans rep 😂 unironically tho if that was just mentioned in passing thats rad
edit: awww i commented too soon. still cool that they both basically have cloacas tho
