  • Philip Roth, who died on May 22, 2018, has been called "America's greatest living novelist" many times over. Roth rarely did interviews, but he invited "Sunday Morning" into his home. And that's where Rita Braver sat down with him to talk about his work, his life, and his legacy, in a story originally broadcast on October 3, 2010.

God, I love Philip Roth so much. I can't, still can't believe they didn't give him a Nobel...

I think it's important to note that the Nobel Prize for Literature isn't simply given to the best writer. There's a famous clause; it's given to an author who has "produced the most outstanding work in an idealistic direction." I think this is probably the reason he was never given the prize.

I was really fascinated by his response to the question about God: "I'm afraid there isn't, no." That can be understood in several ways. I wonder which one he meant (or if he might have meant them all). I can think of at least two people I know who are sure there is no God but really wish there were. It's a very difficult and stoic position to take.

The first book I read of his was Portnoy's Complaint and that was back in 1972, have read a few more since and thankfully still have more to discover. I don't know who this Rita Braver is but how insulting of Sunday Morning to send a gossip columnist only interested in fishing out titbits to interview Philip Roth. His annoyance was visible.
