EC mentions this in his autobiography. The band actually played this at the famous concert for the Queen where John Lennon suggested the audience rattle their jewelry. He brought home their autographs and a young Declan pasted them in his autograph book. 25 years later he wrote songs with Macca.
I’m an EC fan. First saw him in 1977 at my university when he was part of the Stiffs tour. I remember playing his ‘My aim is true’ album at home that year. My father had met Ross and said that Ross had the better voice. Hard to disagree, but EC’s voice is well suited to his songs. I’m currently listening to the audiobook of EC’s memoir, read by the man himself, which I’d recommend.
A favourite of my mother's from my childhood. I have a sneaking suspicion little Ross's musician pals are laughing at his hyperactive moves rather than with him.
This is the Claude Francois version, he's just knocking it off. Cloclo called it "Si j'avais un marteau" and changed the lyrics so that they'd work in French, Mr McManus used Cloclo's arrangement but sang the English lyrics. Sounds pretty good in both languages.
Otherwise known as a cover. I recall Elvis talking of the demands of his father's work; having to very quickly learn each week, with little to go on, song versions in preparation for performance or recording.
Can't get over Elvis Costello being the spitting image of his dad! I love the way he dances and moves about to the song!😅
For the life of me I can't figure out why I keep watching this and enjoying it.
Cause this tune slaps, Tom. 😁
Costello daddy O
Just a silly happy song..We need more of them.
Probably simply because Ross was a wildly entertaining performer.
It's fire cuz
This version SLAPS!!!🤩
Love this clip so much
The 3 guys on the rotisserie are mesmerizing! 😎
Lol

This is a sight you'll never see today - a nerdy looking guy with a naff dance move belting out a hit song.
The best version hands down. Elvis Costello's dad.
What is??
What a great sound, all achieved with harmonising vocals and percussion instruments.
And a little swinging guitar!
This is soooo good
Pure musical confection perfection
An old protest song this... turned into a calypso. Joyous and brilliant.
I saw Elvis Costello in concert and he includes this clip in his show.
Everything that's wrong about this makes it truly great
Steve schirippa brought me here!!
Awesome - thanks so much for sharing this
Elvis Costello's dad
Wow..Didn't know that ..Look at him though of course he's his Dad.
Fantastic!
The love between by brothers and my sisters is so important.
Amazing Track..
This is amazing!

Just imagine if they had been brothers or his dad had come of age in the 60s.
The part where he's sliding backwards with both feet, is that an early Michael Jackson Moon Walk?
Excellent!
Very cool, this version seems to have influenced Malagasy, French group, Les Surfs' Si J'avais Un Marteau.
Joyous

groovy!
Great!!!
He was also a secret lemonade drinker.
Elvis’s dad
Awsome ❤
awesome
Is this available to buy anywhere? Was it ever released on CD or LP? Best version of this song I've heard.
His son looks so like him
Vic Reeves has definitely seen this.
😂
I hope he managed to get his lemonade problem under control

Not really fair to accuse him of ripping it off. He's only the singer in the orchestra.
It's a cover of an arrangement. It's hardly knocking anything off.
Yeah yeah yeah well maybe, but Rita Pavone's version blows everything.

This is so Austin Powers
It should’ve been him with Burt Bacharach in Spy Who Shagged Me instead of Elvis/Declan.
Gaza
The father is an altogether groovier product than the son. But hey both are brilliant in their own way.
So Ross DID have a better voice than his son! no lack of talent in either, though.
I think he had a better singing voice than his son..
Perfect
Thank God he does not have a Bell :-) He would drive me nuts.
