This training session with Michael Jackson and Seth Riggs is pure gold!
...But if we simply go through this routine with our own voices without making some key concessions and observations, we are going to fall flat and possibly even injure ourselves.
I've personally worked with vocalists who have tried this approach and push through the discomfort because they "need to train like the best to be the best" and really mess themselves up!
Don't be that vocalists who strives during warmups. Let me show you how to take the best and most accessible parts of this legendary training session and put it to work for you... For YOUR voice... For YOUR goals! - Hudba
I love how you love him. 🥰 I appreciate how you talk about him (and call him Michael 😊) 🙏 This is what he deserves. To be remembered as a brilliant singer and to be a Master we can learn from. ❤
Well said
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
✨👌💯
Totally agree ❤
Musicians talk about how MJ didn't play instruments... His voice and body was the instrument...superb 🤌🏾🤌🏾
MJ is probably the only artist that would make you listen religiously to his warm up session!
What made Michael who he was is the willingness to fervently train what was already a naturally amazing voice. He constantly kept his instrument tuned and then some.
This is why MJ is one of the greatest of all time. He put in the work. People just saw the end product but look at all the work that goes into it. MJ was perfectionist in everything from vocals to dancing.
Seth is still alive. I think he's 92. That might be a great interview.
totally!
I would love to hear that interview!
If this could happen 😱
Seth and MJ would do this for two hours everyday before recording sessions in the studio.
If I remember right MJ practiced a lot not only dance during his glorious Bad tour, but also his vocals together with Seth Riggs. Thank you Mr. Liepe for this! If it's possible I shall not ask again abt Heartbreak hotel, but could you instead try Streetwalker, an unreleased MJ song from Bad? What he does with his voice there....wild!
Mj's talking voice is so sweet and pure
5:28 Chris: I love the nasality in that vowel shape.. that really healthy mix 👌
5:53 Michael : Thanks!
22:30 yes, they were working on the song "D.S." on the HIStory album where michael at the end of the song sings ".... is a cold man, cold man, cold man" ... refering to the District Attorney Tom Sneddon
Or stranger in Moscow “when you’re cold inside”
ETA: Nah it likely DS!
How can that be though ? Tom Sneddon was the prosecutor in 2003 accusations.
@@SeldomPooper and 1993
Michael has been gone for nearly fourteen years--but hearing this and watching your videos almost allows me to believe that, somewhere, in another time and place, he’s still in a studio, with Seth, preparing to thrill his devoted fans.
Thanks, Chris.❤
Oah that made me cry :(
michael was really impressive
“TOM SNEDDON IS A COLD MAN” Michael has to be referring to recording D.S. So awesome to hear him work on little things like that before going in and laying it down.
Том Снеддон подлый человек, гнобивший Майкла Джексона более 10 лет. Чтобы его черти жарили на том свете и днем и ночью. Сволочь он был.
I always love when you showcase Micheal Jackson, I didn't think I'd ever hear Micheal sing lip frills lol. Honestly I've always tried these and I can never really seem to get it right , I'll keep practicing😂. He makes it sound so easy😢
Can you imagine there a people who think Michael was not a vocalist!!?????????
Thanks for bringing Michael to us again ^_^
You bet!
1:55 I've always been told that the "Rossini scale" exercise has to be practised at a speed for the student to avoid having the time to contract wrong muscles / create tension.
Even Michael’s vocal warmups sound amazing. 😊
Wow, what a treasure! So great to hear Michael in teacher student mode
Amazing and unexpected to hear an actual MJ training session. Love your reactions too, along with explaining and coaching how to approach a training session such as these.
i found it really cool when i realised the "is a cold" was him talking about the song D.S. he must've been in the process of making that song when he did this vocal training session! that was the coolest thing!
Love your mj analysis
Yay! Thanks for showcasing MJ again. I will watch this as soon as I can. Thanks!
Wow, Michael was an absolute legend. ❤
22:41 "is a cold" that's from Michael's song D.S. "Dom Sheldon is a cold man." :)
He wants Michael to consistently maintain the fast vibrato that is Michael's trademark vibrato
I love this!! The way you break down Michael’s vocals is so interesting and entertaining. I actually learn more from these videos. Thank you for showing Michael’s musical genius like this. Been a fan of his all my life and watching these videos just shows me another wonderful side of him. If you can, please please please do “Stranger In Moscow”
Its nice to see MJ using that much of nasality in a very strategic way
it helps a LOT with mixed voice
also
About his vibrato
I've heard from one of my coaches that make it faster can help release the tension a bit
speaking of his vibrato- he had a mean vibrato, strong asf
Love it Chris! So insightful! Great job! (ps this is the warm up session for his song D.S from his HiStory album! Confirmed by the “is a cold” line) so cool!
The GOAT!!!
I love it when I see people understand how incredibly talented Michael Jackson was. It's mind boggling to me when he gets left off of "Best Of" lists.
What?
@@japo137 nothing about my post was confusing.
@@InfectiousGroovePodcast It was the wondering why or in which best of lists he is missing.
@@japo137 he's missing from many "best of" lists, which is mind boggling to me
As a non-singer, I loved the commentary. I've heard the training session before but missed a lot of stuff. Thank you very much!
i love his voice so much❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
If you're curious, the song he was trying to get the right approach for towards the end is called "D.S"
thank you for the love
Hi Chris,
You answered my request on my last comment on a video of Michael Jackson and I thank you with all my heart for this beautiful surprise.
You’re the best 💪💪💪💪
thank you for analyzing this! very helpful❤️
I think that reason for vibrato might be that it's related to the frequency. Certain pitches have certain frequencies and changing your vibrato might dissonate with the frequency. Also maybe it's about having the control when we talk about just exercise.
That fry though😊
Doing same exercices since I discoved his warm up many years ago 😊😊. I agree that without the correct technic it can be dommaging for the voices.
Someone handed him a drink, you can hear the packet and the spoon tinkling later and he’s moving about on the call. Love this man ❤
Is a cold I believe is from DS on the History Album.
You're awesome, thank you for sharing this with us!
Glad you enjoyed it!
If I wasn't a fan of MJ I'm sure I would be after watching your videos Chris.
Thank u so much for this respectful content ❤
I once said i will have this vocal training be played at my funeral and force everyone to listen to his magical gift 😅
Listening to this makes me feel like being "at home". His voice has been part of my life since 36 yrs. I feel his warmth immediately embracing my soul.
In tears. Miss him.
OH MY GOD coolest comment!
You are so right, many people underrate him. I can not understand how you are able not to like his music. And I feel so sorry for them :D
I never loved him more than right now !
P.S. You has met him?? o.O
yes i did.
@@japo137
Fascinating, thank you!!!
OMG thank you so much
Thanks for doing this video Chris - I remember recommending this a couple months ago.
I knew you'd break it down and examine his vocals thoroughly
I love how the vocal warm ups are so simple even in death metal warm up is a must another good coach i learned from her videos is Melissa Cross
Wounderful work Chris!!!!
Fascinating video and glimpse into MJ's warm-up.
I love watching your videos Chris and I am learning so much from the way you breakdown singers I have always admired.
Didn't think I was a very good singer for a long time, until I realized that wasn't true, I was just unfamiliar with how to use my voice and my body.
Just wanted to drop this comment here to say thank you for being a part of my own musical journey and trying to improve my singing.
I definitely need to do more of this kind of thing - I have a bad, bad habit of just jumping straight into recording vocals for whatever song I'm working on rather than warming up properly. You straight called me out hard saying that will just make you tired before you even get going, and yes! that is exactly one of the issues I constantly fight.
Thanks for the reminder and the encouraging lesson!
I would love to hear give into me by Michael Jackson with just the vocals in one of your videos that song is such a masterpiece that he let three days grace cover it
oop yeah!!
Thank you, this is awesome! I think (but I am not sure) that Seth Riggs comes from classical voice training technique. That MIGHT explain why he asked Michael to maintain a steady vibrato (for the warm up/training). Love all the details you went into! Hearing Michael taking his chest / mixed voice all the way up gives me a lump in my throat lmao! It is very hard for me (soprano) to do this, and I tend to strain and have to be very careful.
Hey! You're right. Mr Riggs does come from a classical background. His approach has been described as "bel canto adapted for pop and rock singers" and is based on the teachings of the old Italian school.
Thanks for sharing this with us!!
Your videos are awesome Chris! Love all the insights, I started your videos knowing nothing and now I feel so proud that I understand what you're talking about in videos like this, you're a great teacher!
Thank you Chris! Really amazing video (as always)!!!!
Love your MJ vids-please please do Morphine if you can. It’s such a varied but seemingly personal song that’s highly under heard.
That's beautiful ☺
Well done video!
Thanks!
super Video , Thank you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Glad you liked it!
Thanks for your content! I would love to see a vocal analysis of Keith Buckley from the band Every Time I Die, specifically the song Wanderlust would be a good one.
Fast vibrato is MJ way of doing his own vibrato in all or his songs. It's is voice personality
This is GOLD Chris! How on earth did you manage to get your hands into this??!! Awesome stuff!
It's just floating around on CZcams believe it or not!! :) !! I was surprised too!
@@chrisliepe awesome, I'll search for it, thank you!!!
It was uploaded long ago
I' m looking out for Jaafar Jackson. Not to wait for a second M.J.
I beleave in Jackson famely and that come out a singer next generation. There are also 3T.
I hope the fathers have also the know how as we can learn in this great contribution to promote the boys.
Bless you for share this session.❤
I LOVE THESE. can you please do xscape, tabloid junkie, blue gangster, or maybe shout?? although that one might be impossible to get because it’s unreleased
" I want to be all the way open " ( if I remember these practice sessions are for the You are not alone recordings )Been listening to this for years .Thanks coach
This is for D.S.. the "a cold" with those notes appear in that song. In You are not alone it's "so cold", not "a cold"
@@richardkovacs2006 and sounds like it's particularly for the backing / harmony vocals.
I would love to see a video on Remember the Time!
I liked the unedited videos you used to do (i mean the small spaces between your phrases)
Thanks after all
This is for the song D.S. from the 1995 HIStory album, which is a diss track against the district attorney Tom Sneddon (renamed Dom Sheldon in the lyrics for legal reasons), so when MJ says that the line is "is a cold" it is from the part of the song that goes: "Tom Sneddon is a cold man"
This is so amazing! Do you by any chance have video uploaded that show how to better sing lower tones? I got to know how to sing high powerful notes, but at the second octave I lose my tone and sound weak and reaching
I saw a comment a while ago from the actual video saying that this actually was a warm up for a recording session. Since he’s on a mic and people are coming in and out, it’s safe to say he’s in the studio. Then Seth asks is there any specific phrase you need help with? D.S. Is the only song with the phrase “is a cold” as in “Dom Sheldon is a cold man”. Which was recorded around the same time. And when you listen to that song, you can hear him harmonize that phrase in the same range as the warm up.
Thank you making this though! Such a great analysis that will help me and I will take all of your advise! 🙌🏻
I agree with you, but I do find it funny that the warm-up Michael is doing on the line is in the intro of Ghosts
Hi Chris, I am a very big fan of your videos and have been learning intensively with your videos for 3 months
I think this video is very awesome I wanted to ask, since I am a huge fan of Lady Gaga, could you please do more voice reactions and analyzes of her voice, I would be very happy
And maybe also to Roger Cicero, he was also such a brilliant singer and certainly has a couple of very interesting singing techniques.
I would be very happy about an answer
Thank you for your videos
Hello, I really like all your videos. I just have one question, how Michael did the saturated voice like the song Scream please?
I'd love to see you analyse Dimash Qudaibergens' voice. Over 6 octave range with the ability to sing every genre of music! And he's hugely inspired by MJ (my all time favourite artist) 🥰
:/
I LOVEEEEE THIS!!
Michael Jackson was a living musical instrument.
It's so beautiful for me to hear his voice. LOVE HIM.
Chris !
Please please please next time can you play Man in the mirror…
Think you so much 👍👍👍
Please do THEY DONT CARE ABOUT US.which has such incredible intrument.
How do you even control the speed of your vibrato? My vibrato is always going at the same frequency. Not that I'd want a much faster or slower vibrato, but being able to tempo match it would be cool.
Chris, is this similar to stamina builder? Could this be used as a workout as well 🤔
It totally could! As long as you don't strive to be like Mike when you're doing it! It has to be tailored to where the specific vocalist is like Seth tailored this to Michael!
@@chrisliepe that's so cool, ok I'll save this for later then
" Is a cold man?"Is that the lyric? From D.S?
Can We Get Remember The Time
So toward the beginning, why would one go nasal vs not? Is it to stay out of head voice and have good tone?
And at end, what is he meaning by "open"?
Because nasality is a gateway to so many amazing sounds and range opportunities. We naturally avoid nasality when we sing and this is actually the opposite of what we want to do so warming up with it helps us resonate in the ways we really want for a great sounding and feeling voice!
can you please try and find the multi tracks for they don’t care about us
I've tried and tried :( No luck :(
@@chrisliepeoh understandable the tracks are quite rare i think but hopefully you will get ur hands on them one day and can’t for for that day to happen
I wonder if he didn’t tell Michael to keep the vibrato speed because of something stylistic he wanted to hear Michael maintain 🤔. Not so much a universal coaching principle but possibly something unique to the student at the time?
I think this is a really good perspective on it!
How can Michael get to F2 ? as a tenor ? I can barely get a G2 on a good day . All in all everything below B2 Is not really an option XD
Practice like this? 😂
@@Gabrielle4870 😂👍🏻
he had a huge range lol
They brought him hot tea on a plate, as you can here the cup and spoon
Where can we get the original audio?
Search CZcams :)
peaeee dooooo
Wtf
Do you think Michael added nasality because the high notes would've been too difficult to comfortably reach without it?
I don’t think he consciously thought that way but yes. Dynamic resonance is the key and lots of great singers stumble upon this!
@@chrisliepe Him having to do that would suggest that the notes were too high and he was singing out of his natural range but when you listen to his vibrato at 21:35 it sounds even and relaxed which suggests he was comfortable singing that high.
Was Michael a tenor or an alto?
Tenor
@@chrisliepea mid-light tenor, mostly full lyric
A video in which a popular South Korean 4-member group performed Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal is getting a good response. Take a look. And Bohemian Rhapsody is the best. It's not a reaction request, so see it as you like.

Sorry but this is not for training session !!
He warm up and training ,but focus is on warm up,this was before a concert/
You can hear him say am i all the way open, and Seth Riggs says i dont wanna push you up,because he have to sing whole concert, and he wasked is he open for hightest parts for the night.
Not a concert but a recording session at the studio
The "a cold" question (and this is why MJ asked foe training) ia feon the recorsibg session for HIStory. The "a cold" with those notes is in the song D.S.
This sounds sped up. But I’m not sure.
it isn't
Micheal is very much speech level as set rings taught. Not loud at all.
Comment for da algorithm
Streak count: 202
We need another deep dive into Josh from Greta Van Fleet's singing (live or recorded) recently in late 2022 and 2023. There has been some excellent live recordings in 2022/23.
wait till ai finds this
Ha! AI will NEVER touch the real MJ
4:16 sounds like Auto tune was used.
This is from 93. And it's a training seasion. I don't think auto tune was in play in any sense...
but IMHO...its like the more he did those kind of practice the more he lost his character as a funky playful, authentic kind of singer. He won more technique but he lost character. Very dangerous. Songs like childhood, smile etc. were too exaggerated, almost theatrical -- singing to please someone else....The Lady in my life, She's out of my life etc were just Michael Jackson.
Interesting take but I kind of disagree he needed technique and training to be able to sustain a career over decades. smile and childhood those songs were purposefully sung in that style because it suits the song. At the same time he could be aggressive and powerful in songs like scream and they don’t really care about us or full and smooth in remember the time or rock my world. His style of music did change as well and he adapted his voice to do the same. I think he took on a different character in his adult years rather than losing it if that makes sense
I cannot dissagree more...his voice evolved into orbit
Training doesn't change your personality, it helps to keep your vocal chords trained to save it from injuries. I
What you say is a bit like if you said: the other MJ shouldn't have trained his muscles so much, because he lost his raw style of playing basketball. But if he didn't train he would have put himself more vulnerable to injuries. The vocal chords are just like that: they are muscles after all. You confuse trained voice with the style of the song.
Yes and no. Those songs were recorded at different times not necessarily in the era they were released.
@@Gabrielle4870yup
i question that Seth Riggs is the best Vocal Coach, if you know anything about vocalising, each singer has a different warm up what is good for one singer is not good for another and thats a fact, and i will prove it, do you think Freddy uses the same method as Jackson, no of course not, or Celine the same as Streisand its rubbish, if a singer can truly sing, he could pick a warm up on youtube and be a great singer, and you can take that to the bank.
