"Rosanna" next. These guys are all "professional" studio musicians. Each one is a virtuoso in their own right. They were (and continued to be) hired guns for other bands (writing, playing) and decided to get together and do their own thing. This was the result. They all take turns writing, and singing lead (between three of them).
For reference "Human Nature" by MICHAEL JACKSON is a TOTO song. Check the credits. It's them playing it too. And many other contributions on the THRILLER album. This is just one example of many.
Check out "Rosanna" RECORD OF THE YEAR grammy for 1983.

We had landlines back then, and an expression, we would use sometimes, was “hold the line”- you couldn’t always get hold of someone on a landline back then. No voicemail, no call waiting, no call forwarding. And you couldn’t carry your landline with you. If you weren’t there to answer, or you were on the phone with someone else, you couldn’t get THAT call! So hold the line - stick around and keep the line clear, so they can get hold of you. And if they were working, were delayed, or no where near a working landline or public pay phone, they couldn’t call - they would call when they could, so “Love isn’t always on time”. And if they didn’t have enough money for the public pay phone, they couldn’t call, or the telephone operator would cut them off after they used up the time they paid for. Even the next county could be considered long distance, and cost extra, even if it’s across the street. Sometimes it was phone tag back and forth, but you wouldn’t know they actually called unless you were there to answer the phone. SOOOOOOOOO much nicer and convenient with cell phones!!!!❤
Love TOTO!!!! And the lead singer is a very soulful singer!!!❤❤❤

First, they're from LA, the San Fernando Valley. Almost all of the band went to school together including the 3 Porcaro brothers.
Their name means total, everthing, as in music genres.
Hold the line came from, I've got another call, hold the line, from another girl.
I couldn't be prouder to say that they were all friends of mine in school. After 50 years, it still blows my mind, a new generation listening to my friends play and digging it.
The musicians in Toto have played on albums, including there own, that have sold more then 750 million albums with Thriller at #1.

Outstanding musicianship and singing on a love song from a somewhat different perspective. A battle cry.

Once the band came together, David Paich began composing what would become the eponymous debut album, Toto. According to popular myth, at the first recording sessions, in order to distinguish their own demo tapes from other bands' in the studio, Jeff Porcaro wrote the word "Toto" on them. In the early 1980s, band members told the press that the band was named after Toto the dog from The Wizard of Oz.[10] After the completion of the first album, the band and record were still unnamed. David Hungate, after viewing the name on the demo tapes, explained to the group that the Latin words "in toto" translated to "all-encompassing". Because the band members played on so many records and so many musical genres, they adopted the name "Toto" as their own

'The origin of the name "Toto" was a cause for debate for quite some time. The band themselves gave differing accounts on different occasions. Initially, rock mythology had it that the name was taken from the word that Porcaro would write on the band's demo tapes to keep them separate from the other bands in the studio. Then the band told the press that they were named after the dog in The Wizard of Oz. Eventually, the "official" story was revealed to be that "Toto" was taken from the Latin words "In Toto," which means "all-encompassing," with the significance of that selection being that the band brought together so many genres and areas of specialization that they could, and did, do anything and everything.' - SongFacts website

Great reaction! I especially the wide-eyed look into the camera and sharing that you have "goosebumps". That's the stuff that makes "reaction" videos great because we get to empathize and share those "first time feelings" all over again through your experience. I love the respect you are putting on these older songs. I grew up on disco/R&B/pop dance in the seventies and eighties and added in rap in the middle eighties (Run DMC, LL Cool J, Sir Mix-a-Lot, Slick Rick, Whodini, Two Live Crew, etc). However, I could not STAND country and hard rock/heavy metal until my late twenties. I suppose growth in life is what it is all about.
JUST ONE MORE THING: No disrespect but the Gun-n-Rose's line from "Paradise City" is "Take me down to the PARADISE CITY; Where the grass is green and the girls are pretty". Second video I've heard you misquote the lyric. I did double check myself in case I was mistaken before making this comment. Cheers!

After achieving success as studio musicians, the high school buddies decided to form a new band in the late 1970s with some of the best musicians in the business …David Hungate, after viewing the name on the demo tapes, explained to the group that the Latin words "in toto" translated to "all-encompassing". Because the band members played on so many records and so many musical genres, they adopted the name "Toto" as their own. THE SINGER IS Bobby Kimball.

Toto is a phenomenal group: Bobby Kimball on lead vocals, Steve Lukather (suspenders) on guitar, Jeff Porcaro on drums, David Hungate on bass(in this video), and Steve Porcaro on keyboards, David Paich on keyboards. Bobby Kimball, Steve Lukather, and David Paich all share in the lead vocals for Toto. David Hungate told the guys in Toto that Toto in Latin meant all-encompassing, but they went with Toto from Wizard Of Oz in the beginning, but learned of the Latin meaning and went with that. Toto is in my top 5 bands of all time: 1. Kansas, 2. Toto, 3. Foreigner, 4. Journey, 5. Styx. Toto has some great songs like: Hydra, Hold The Line, 99, Rosanna, Africa(good just not in my top 10), I'll Be Over You, Pamela, White Sister, Georgy Porgy, I Won't Hold You Back, and more! Great band!

The thing to remember is that these 60s and 70s bands with amazing lead singers like Bobby Kimball (Toto), Steve Perry (Journey), Ann Wilson (Heart) and those featuring their harmonizing like Three Dog Night and CSN&Y and so very many more did not have the advantages of today's technology. There were no in-ear monitors, no auto correct. Heck, wireless mics weren't that popular until the 80s. So when they sounded amazing live there was no crutch or trick. They were just that good. 🤘

Perhaps the finest collection of studio rats in the business, many thousands of tracks recorded between them, stuff you’ve heard tons of, you just don’t know it. Not to mention, 3 of them have fathers that are professional composers, one of which carries the surname Williams. Yes, THAT Williams, though Joseph didn’t join Toto ‘til later than this.
Re: the vocals, many of the members have said Toto was founded as a vocal group, they all can sing, and do so well. You’ll basically always have access to 4 voices, sometimes 5, maybe even 6. Then, on top of it, they’re bad ass players, one foot in jazz, one in rock and the spare leg all over the place.

There’s a video of a full concert from the 80’s where Lukather does a tribute guitar solo to Jimi Hendrix. It’s a must see. The dude was insane. It’s no wonder Michael Jackson used him on his biggest album.

Me and my buddy Bob who was a musician got blasted on qualudes one night and we both had to work the next day so he picked me up the next morning in his 70 coupe Deville that had a state of the art audio system and we both put a few drops of speed in our coffee and as we pulled away from the deli this song came on the radio! We had to pull over! This was so killer the first time I heard it! I get so jealous sometimes when I see you hearing music for the first time because I really don’t remember when the first time I’ve heard so many songs but this one was vivid!😂 great days just glad I survived it!

Timeless music has something about it that speaks a universal truth, weather it is the words in the song that resonate a deep sense of truth that we all acknowledge or the feeling the vibration the music gives our bodies - it gets us to a moment of liberation straight through the heart!
