      @TovaMacAffeller I love watching the old video of generation X on Top of the Pops from 1979. He was sooo nervous. It's so funny to look back on those times. Billy and Robert Smith from The Cure (and lots of other great bands/people used to always hang out with us at our local pubs and clubs where they'd get up and just start playing. we had a good laugh.Happy days. Of course I was only a baby then 😉😂 No, honestly !Okay, okay I ain't no spring chicken but still love music. My latest favourite since 2020 (ish) is local guy called Ren. So much talent and swag - and although he’s in his 60s now - he looks and performs like he’s at least 25 years younger. Try to catch a show if you can - you’ll love it!!

When he sang this song, he went crazy on the stage and fell hard on his back under the smoke on the stage. Couldn't see him. He was DOWN... and NEVER missed the More More More part. 😂🤘keep repeating it until he could get up. The band was totally following the lead. Fabulous all the way!! Rock STAR!!

    New trends in music always face negative pushback. People used to vilify Elvis and The Beatles. My mom told me that when she was young, she went to a concert of The Mamas and the Papas. The opening act got booed of the stage. It was Jimi Hendrix. Jazz, rock, rap, punk, heavy metal, all got the same treatment. Some people just fear change. Props to you for opening your mind to new forms of musical expression.

    William Broad, aka Billy Idol was part of the Bromley Contingent in the London punk scene hanging out with The Sex Pistols early 70s. He was part of his own band mid 70s called Generation X who did a song Dancing With Myself which was their hit single, amongst some other notable good tracks. He went solo and moved to USA after the punk scene starting dying out in the UK. I highly recommend his book, absolutely fantastic read and his early days to rising in the 80s with classics such as White Wedding, Rebel Yell, Eyes Without A Face, To Be A Lover, Mony Mony and many many many more hits :)

    I think sometimes the difference between the suggestive or sexual content in rock/pop and some hip hop, was sexual violence, for instance Billy's singing about a consensual situation, not a violent one, whereas some hip hop content was/is about non- consensual situations.

    • @BBStyles777
      @BBStyles777 Před 4 měsíci

      And a lot of times rock depicts a longing for a certain person, wheras, in rap, the people are dispensable... "on to the next one," etc. In other words the sexual acts depicted are enjoyable but meaningful, as opposed to just a sport. That is my opinion. Prime example is NIN's "closer," where the lyrics say, "you get me closer to God." Key word being "You," one person, a special person to the singer. Then listen to "Hey Ya". Although the melody is a banger, I would rather listen to NIN any day because the lyrics to Outcast's "Hey Ya" are depressing as F.

    • @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118
      @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 Před 4 měsíci

      I would like to add that some of the hip hop content that is about sex or contains lyrics about sexual situations also has very derogatory language and narratives about women.
      However pop and rock songs that contained lyrics about sex, no matter how respectful and consensual, also often caused controversy simply because some people think you shouldn't include such things in songs.
      Anyone suggesting that hiphop songs containing sexual lyrics get backlash whilst pop/rock songs containing sexual lyrics don't get backlash because of r4cism is simply ignorant.

    I saw Billy Idol in concert in 2013. Hands down the best concert I've ever been to! He is SO good!!! He was definitely one of the original punk rockers. And yes, white wedding is another one of his songs. But this one is more fun in my opinion. You could also check out "Dancing with myself". That's another really good one. Can I just say btw, I love seeing you diversify your music knowledge. That's awesome to watch.
    As somebody that listens to all genres of music, and somebody born in the early 80s...I have said so many times about people dissing rap when Rock lyrics were just as bad. I think it had to do with rap being performed by people in the hood. I genuinely think it was because it went against the norm. And if I'm being completely honest, the fact that it was mostly black people... I'm sure that had something to do with it too. They gave crap to punk also because they rebelled against mainstream rock. Look up the court case against Dee Snyder and Twisted Sister that happened in the 80s. It went all the way to the Supreme Court over lyrics. Record labels wanted them to remove the bad lyrics from their songs or stop selling albums. Dee Snyder refused. Due to lyrics they didn't like and didn't want their kids listening to. That court case is what made it mandatory that artists had to put a warning label about lyrics onto the outside of an album. So parents could see if the lyrics were bad before they bought the album. So the history of punk was about rebelling against mainstream rock. And I think, anything that went against the norm back then was just flat out considered bad. And that included rap too.
    Hope this helped a little. People just got tired of listening to the same old music over and over again. So they created something new. Radio, punk, all of it was new and unknown. And we all know that a lot of hatred is formed in ignorance and/or fear of the unknown. They were afraid of new. They were afraid to lose control.

    Since the beginning of the 'Not your parents music' they have come down on anything new or different, or anything they thought would make their perfect angels rebel against them. I was 19 when this came out so it was just good rock to me (still crushin on Billy btw) and was there for the birth of rap and I remember how hard they were on all of it. They all hated Elvis and the Beatles too. Check out Sweet Emotion from Aerosmith from 1975 lol.

    They came down hard on rock also. Look up Tipper Gore. She's the reason there are parental warning labels on Records, Cassettes, and CD's.
    In 1985, Gore co-founded the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC), which advocated for labeling of record covers of releases featuring profane language, especially in the heavy metal, punk, and hip hop genres of music.[2] Throughout her decades of public life, she has advocated for placing advisory labels on music (leading critics to call her a censor) -- Wikipedia
    The band, Warrant, protested by putting a track on the end of an album called "Ode To Tipper Gore". Check it out here: czcams.com/video/SeehlZgFUIk/video.html
