Interesting that both Suou brothers have Shadows that try to get them to confront their hatred for someone they love. Katsuya has the potential to deal with it gracefully, but in Innocent Sin, Tatsuya only has the option to deny it, give in, or deflect.
I'm so upset that the options where the Innocent Sin cast regain their memories are seen as the "bad choices" in-game, like I can understand why, with the fate of the world at stake, but god I just want them to remember so badly.
I guess it's to make you symphatize with Tatsuya even more. Both Tatsuya and the player (if previously played IS) just want to spend more time with the old cast and even make them remember the good old days, but sadly doing that is putting the world at risk, so both of them must leave their wish aside just to avoid screwing up everything again.

What I love is that Katsuya and Ulala's voice actors would come back years later in persona 4 to voice Teddie and Yukiko
Granted there are very few dubbed lines in the game, unfortunately.

So Shadow Force forces one of the most irritating things any player has to deal with - playing while having nearly no idea what's happening. I know you can make rough guesses due to damage numbers, but still.

Do the choices in the conversation with the Shadows actually effect anything? Or do Tatsu's friends always wake up regardless?
They might. I haven't played the game myself, but the scene before the fight was different in another video.
I can answer that! They affect how much HP the Shadow Selves have when you fight them and the Nyarlathotep boss fight is harder because he uses more powerful skills, more HP and better stats. First form for example uses Unperishable Black and Omega Cluster (Dark, kills one character every round starting from lowest level)
The choices you make also affect whether Lisa or Eikichi remember what happened in Innocent Sin (and if all three of them do, the world Philemon created is essentially overwritten)
Interesting to know those choices mattered that much.

They do matter, for example, that choice where Maya said: "I believe in you...", stops the awakening, the good choices able the good ending.

my theory is that, while katsuya is giving into his shadow's words, nyarlathotep is manipulating the darkness in his heart while he's in a vulnerable state of mind

No, she isn't. She wants a boyfriend so bad but her unfeminine attitude makes them go away. Katsuya even hints Ulala's moves on Baofu. In the end of p2 Eternal punishment, it IS possible that Ulala and Baofu is in a relationship (since Baofu already moved on from Miki)
