That's what happened in the book (Kinda). It was just lust at the beginning then it developed into love.
Imo, their story is the weakest even though I love LOVE Pen, the other 3 books that I read were better imo. (Benedict's, Eloise's and Francesca's).
I think the scene with the hand cut was more of the romantic moment. She gave him words of affirmation and he closed his hand to hold her hand longer. There was hints of jealousy when talking with another suitor was going well. They were kinda flirting and giggling the whole time then he got nervous seeing her actually stray a bit.
Idk I buy it because a lot of friends to lovers irl do kind of have a sudden watershed moment or the mixed up dormant feelings inside start clicking and you realize ‘wait, I’m going above and beyond compared to my other friendships and this is something that is consuming my thoughts.’
You see that in him being unsettled that she didn’t write him back, with him leaving the brothel early only to wait for her at the market (despite saying he was late.) Him breaking every law in propriety to have her undivided attention or be in close quarters with her.
I would even dare to say the moment she asked for a kiss was when he was like ’ooooooh, I want this. And now there is hope and she might want me as well.’
That little beat where he got timid and looked down because her asking for a kiss (before she said it wouldn’t mean anything) is like a bold af proposal on the woman’s end.
Would I have liked more character centred episodes, flashback scenes or them mingling more before the kiss? Sure. but I blame Netflix for this fixed runtime and ensemble set up that is getting harder to manage with how big the cast is getting.
But keep in mind the show runners are pretty apt about couple screen time. S1 daphne and Simon had like 33 minutes out of the 4-ish hours of the first 4 eps together and Colin and pen came up pretty much at the same time.

It feels like Colin only wants Penelope because he can’t stand seeing her with anyone else. That is what the vibe is to me. I think they wasted the chance for Lady Danbury/Penelope mentorship. Penelope could have really bloomed in her own right under Lady D’s guidance. If I were Penelope I would have never even entertained the idea of marrying Colin after what he did at season two. This Season feels rushed and empty!

Right? Wouldn't it have been great if Penelope couldn't let go of Colins terrible comment about her from the previous year and he worked really hard to EARN just her friendship back. So that he could demonstrate his sincerity about caring for her and it would allow him to SEE her by humbling himself to doing things she liked. Maybe he takes on the hunt for Lady Whistledown because he believes it is something Pen would enjoy, since Eloise isn't accompanying her anymore, and he could discover more about her. She could say some very Whistledown things and he could even see her ink stained hands. He could go back to read those letters of hers with his new found focus on the hunt and then follow Pen to the printer where he finds her out and confronts her. In his efforts to right the wrong he had committed against her last season, he could put forth that he will maintain her secret. Then he could properly start to see her differently, as she is. She could thank him at a ball for his silence and counsel him on publication for himself. He has flashbacks to their childhood where Penelope is insightful and Penelope sees him as empathetic and sensitive. He starts to realize how brilliant and brave she is. He also realizes this brilliant and brave woman cares about him and takes him seriously. I think that first romantic encounter THEN would feel earned. His proposal THEN would be to the real Penelope. Unfortunately, they bungled the order to where you just feel things are missing when he goes in for the romance. The stakes of Whistledown shouldn't have been treated as more important than the stakes of the leads' emotions.

I noticed in seasons 1 and 2 that each couple allowed the viewers to have insight to why each character was in love and how each of them accepted one anothers flaws. Season 3 just gave a simple kiss, in a very depressing situation for pen and made colin lust for her after it which is so off putting. We as viewers know pen and who she really is but when u really look into his perspective he rlly knows nothing about her
I don’t know how they’re going to tie everything up in Part 2. Lady Whistledown is a big part of Penelope that Colin is oblivious to.
This is my last comment but it is definitely forced. I am not convinced that the one kiss just awakened his realization of love for pen in a romantic way compared to how he viewed her previously so just as you said, he did not deserve everything that occured in the carriage scene. The feelings do feel forced and he definitely has not worked to prove himself. In addition, it seems he only "likes" her because he realizes that Pen is actually the only girl in the ton that takes him seriously like how he thought of marina but also sees him for who he is and debling coming into the picture and taking her would rob him of that which is why he tried to convince her that "she doesn't know debling" even though the courtships dont seem to take that long anyway so the couples truly wouldnt know each other that well when they get married anyway in my humble opinion. As I said, I don't see chemistry or love, I see fear and almost possessiveness in a way. I'm done now, lol.

Fr he feels like a "not abusive but he treated me more like a prize he just won" guy and the way he hates whistledown so much is unintentionally reminding the viewer everytime that he does NOT understand even 1% of the life pen has had to live. I thought part of their romance would be that he saw and understood what she had been going through but really? Not even a scene showing he might think she's smart and poetic enough to be whistledown? Makes him look wildly self centered
I agree with everything with you said. Penelope deserved courtship, pining, and groveling. I feel like the writers didn't trust that we would be invested and they gave Francesca more attention. Colin needed to be humbled more and I needed to see him brought to his knees in his love for her not his gross 3somes.
This was something my friends and I were discussing, too. I don't believe Colin has truly "earned" Pen yet - like yes, he's been suffering in the first two seasons with his lack of direction, but I don't think he's suffered enough over Penelope specifically. I want him to truly pine after her the way Pen has done for him and really work through what she is to him, and not spurned on because of Debling's advances. He hasn't truly earned her respect or her love, at least not yet.
Why should he pine??? This conversation feels so fucking weird because if the roles were reversed, it would sound rightfully icky. She doesn’t deserve his pining all because she liked after him

I have the feeling some fans see Luke and Nicola on the promo tour and they ship them so they are saying the polin chemistry is off the charts when in my opinion their chemistry is not the same in the show that how is is in real life. I think also we needed some flashbacks, we’ve been told they’re friends but sure they are friendly but to me they don’t feel as friends friends
I agree that there was not enough screen time for the main couple, but I hard disagree that Colin needed 3-4 episodes of earning back Pen’s trust after his comment last season. Ant needed that time with Kate because they were complete strangers and that was basically her first impression of him. Colin and Pen have been friends since childhood and I have no problem that she would forgive him immediately after a sincere apology from him. Dragging out the suffering of Colin trying to earn her forgiveness would ultimately harm the relationship between them because it would show that they don’t have a strong foundation of trust and friendship between them.
Thank you. Many people forget that all the lead characters in previous seasons were complete strangers before They met. I honestly feel like Colin and Pen's story is playing out well in this season because Colin always cared for Penelope and this was shown in previous seasons. And most friends to lovers In real life always say how a certain experience changed the way they viewed each other. And in Colin and Pen's case, it was the kiss they shared.
You know what, i think after an apology from him, she should forgive him but not let him be super close and friendly wirh her kike before. There can be forgiveness but if he cares about repairing the relationahip, he should put in the work! If I were Penelope, i'd say "Thank you for your apology, I appreciate it and i forgive you.
But I hope you can understand because of what you said I don't feel as close with you as before, and I am still hurt by your words. I trusted and loved you as someone to not hurt me. I don't know if we can be as we were before, whatever we had at least." Like the friendship was a lie.
Or she can give tough love and say "You didn't care how your words would effect my reputation or future prospects in the event that I would want to find a husband. You words have influence!
And you know it hurts that you had to say you'd never court me or see me in a romantic way but you'd say that about a supposed friend. Did you ever feel friendship with me at all or did i make it up in my head? Why were compelled to say such words?

Something like that and then he'd want to earn her trust and respect back. He can reevaluate their fruendship or whatever from there.
‘Earning” for the audiences sake more than Penelope. Which could be accomplished by us watching him subtly noticing her and slowly realizing his feelings for her. As the OP suggested. That is the satisfying story that I was looking forward to. Watching someone who has been overlooked truly become loved. And because it happened so quickly, and with almost no tension, it’s not really believable. It’s certainly not satisfying. Theirs was my favorite book of the series. There are so many missed opportunities.
What’s missing: pining, angst, banter, tension, better build up of Colin’s romantic feelings and showing the audience that Penelope’s love for Colin is more than infatuation like one would have for a celebrity crush. Honestly, after Queen Charlotte everything is a tough act to follow. But season 3 has been the hardest season for me to watch without feeling like I was forcing myself to care for the storyline. I just didn’t feel the chemistry which sucks because I forced myself to catchup on everything in the Bridgeton universe (season 2 and Queen Charlotte) just to be able to watch season 3. I guess it’s easier for those who read the books to feel their chemistry but for watchers of the show only, there wasn’t much build up to make this love confession feel earned and now I fear we’ll spend the rest of the season with the lady whistledown drama.
Oh don’t worry, as a book reader I felt that it was forced too, he just didn’t yet deserve her love because he never had the realization he actually loved her, in the books Daphne mentions to him that it’s not like a thunderbolt in the sky but you just realize and learn to accept them, and he just didn’t have it at all. To me it was all lust from start to finish, I was even pining for Lord Debling after how petty Colin was during some scenes in both part 1 and 2
@@Alexarose06 I swear I would sign a petition to Shonda to rewrite(new writers) and reshoot season 3 with a closer adaptation to the book. And I will gladly erase this first attempt from my mind. Polin deserves so much better and I don’t want to accept this season at all
I read the book. I definitely didn’t feel it part 1…part 2 i JUST started seeing the glimpses of their friendship that would have sold me. They could have shown more but we wasted it on the mondrakes and benedict and his throuple. Next thing I know they’re married.
Agree. I think the actors have good chemistry, but the story is so underdeveloped. Specifically, we don't see much of the changes Colin goes through. Penelope has already had a crush on him this whole time, but we needed to see Colin go through this shift gradually. Instead, he reluctantly kisses her and suddenly likes her overnight. The writing is too rushed.

Why does Colin need to earn anything? Love isn’t earned. It’s given. Colin was unaware of her feelings for years, and when he developed his own feelings he acted upon them far more swiftly than Penelope. Book Colin needed to grovel bc he knew Pen had feelings for him. TV Colin was oblivious.
What they are complaining about is a lack of an arc. Stories are about characters working towards things and the pay off is them achieving their goal. What if halfway through the Wizard of Oz someone just walked up to Dorothy and told her the way home is on her feet and she just needs to click her heels together? It'd be a much less satisfying story because the growth done on the journey was the point. Colin kissed her, had a dream, decided he wants her, told her and now she's his. No growth needed. While she is over there glamming up, learning how to talk to guys, improving in multiple areas while he's just there.
Still, I think a little more accountability/contrition for speaking about her in the way that he did/for not seeing her for who she was couldn't hurt.

@@MissKashira But this is where you are wrong. He has an arc, he plays the rake, he tries to fit in and he slowly realises that this is not what he wants. And this realization allows him to go after Pen and accept his own feelings for her.
@@willdo2909 I suspect you are right and that was meant to be his arc, but it was so easily resolved I did not notice it. I remembered him coming back and acting a certain way, then Pen mocks him in her newsletter and he immediately stops acting like that. While I do agree him getting over his toxic masculinity was the arc they were going for, I do not feel it was a particularly strong arc. Now that it's concluded, I'll say, it was fine.

I'm so immensely glad the algorithm recommended this to me, because it captures exactly my gripes with season 3 so far! I thought I was missing something with the general notion that Polin's chemistry was bursting off the charts, and with how often I've rewatched the season so far up to this point, I still find myself scratching my head because I can't for the life of me find it. The actors undeniably have chemistry, but it just didn't translate to their characters. I feel like the writing of this season and the way their relationship was handled in particular that did a disservice to what was supposedly their season. Their romance, especially from Colin's end, came out of nowhere.
Friends to lovers (especially childhood friends to lovers) is one of the most rewarding tropes in romance that can lead to the most tooth rotting, toe curling fluff and the most soul crushing outpouring of emotions, as long as it's handled well. Emphasis on handled. Admittedly, my favorite childhood friends to lovers ships aren't at all canon and is more on the fandom side of things (hello haikyuu lol), but for those ships, there's actually development in their relationship. There's a fair balance of showing and telling, but most importantly, there's a buildup that if things were to turn romantic, it felt real and earned. Polin as they were written in this season felt like it alluded to them being friends, but I couldn't feel or see the childhood friends who supposedly have a deep history between them.
As much as I empathized with Pen when she begged Colin to kiss her, it didn't feel like an earned enough "oh" moment, which is arguably the bread and butter of any good romance worth its salt. He kissed her, and suddenly realized "oh wait??? i... love????? penelope????" It was so infuriating watching those first couple of episodes because, like you said, Colin did her dirty after the end of season 2. He's a man and a Bridgerton, and he essentially gets off scot free. Then you have Penelope, who was already being passed over and ridiculed by the ton, is part of a family who isn't the most well regarded, has had her heart broken by both her crush and her best friend in the same night, but she just... forgives him? He gets redeemed, just like that?
We know from previous seasons (I can't say much to season 1 because from what I've heard and seen, it's not my cup of tea and I honestly have no intention to watch it, but I've seen the scene compilations that focus on Polin) that Pen has held a torch for him for forever, but we know how hurt she was by Colin's words. The argument can be made that time has passed so it might not have been as "raw", but the fact remains that he hurt her feelings and Pen wasn't over it. The emotional payoff would have been so much better had he actually slowly earned her trust and forgiveness back through those lessons, and have it all lead into the feelings realization, especially for Colin.
I admit, I might be biased, but as much as I liked the carriage scene, him having his whole "you don't deserve Debling, he's not right for you" moment wasn't earned. I needed him to beg, I needed him to grovel, I wanted him to pine, I wanted him to be fighting in the trenches for Pen and for her love. So much of the marketing hyped up this idea of a love triangle for who would win Pen over, but Debling was such a non-threat (even if we know that she wouldn't pick him) that when we finally get to the carriage scene, where it's supposed to be his big feelings realization/love confession, it was just... oh, so that's how it happens? Honestly, I felt more of the tension and yearning from the behind the scenes dance practices than in the actual show. We know Polin is endgame. We know that they're going to fall in love, but it lacked so much in that department. We hardly get to see any significant build up for their romance.
With a show that has a scope like Bridgerton, and a cast as large as it has, it's unavoidable that at some point, certain story threads need to be introduced in previous seasons. To some extent, that was Polin, so that we get the establishment of friends to lovers and the payoff in this season. I personally find that we see more of Penelope pining after Colin, and Colin either being completely dense or not returning her feelings, but I digress. I feel that the writers might have operated under the assumption that because we see Polin in seasons 1 and 2, that's enough groundwork for their relationship and it would give them more free reign to focus on other plotlines, when this is where they should've put more work into fleshing out their characters and their relationship. They were restricted by the eight episode limit, and it shows. Had they taken the time to show Colin falling for Pen similar to how they showed us Pen's side of things in earlier seasons (because this is the hill I'm dying on, their relationship in earlier seasons was so clearly one sided), it would've helped his character arc immensely.
There was so much missed opportunities because of the scattered focus. It's not just a "Polin" season-- it's Penelope and Colin's season. It would have been so rewarding to see their individual character arcs develop alongside their romantic arc. Penelope wants to become more independent and take her life into her own hands? Yes! I love that for her! But... it doesn't go far. We don't see her grow into her confidence enough, and it honestly sucks. Colin is an even bigger case here, because he feels so flat in a season where he's meant to be the main lead.
My gripes aside for how he went about his romance with Pen... we don't know him. He's a travel guy, he's suddenly raking around town, and he's making himself out to be the Regency era ~cool guy~, but Violet tells us otherwise. She says he's sensitive and caring and the total opposite of how he's carrying himself. Pen certainly saw something in him while they were growing up, but as an audience... where was that? Where was Colin's character development? I was swooning over Anthony and George midway through their seasons, but with Colin? We're halfway through season 3, and I don't care about him. Personally, that's one of this season's biggest failings. I want to root for them, but how can I do that when I know next to nothing about one of the leads? If we are being made to believe he loved her the whole time and it took almost losing her to realize it... it just didn't show.
I'm honestly very wary of the second half, because it looks like it's going to be honeymoon bliss, and then we're diving headfirst into angst because of the Lady Whistledown reveal. Personally, if they do go down the route of show everything is fine and dandy, and then bring about the emotional divide that'll come as a result of Colin finding out Pen was LW, with the way their romance is going so far... the angst won't deliver. Again, had we seen more time to properly explore and develop their relationship, the inevitable hurt would hit so much harder. The emotional turmoil between them would feel like a gut punch that's an actual threat to their relationship, and not just something that was pulled out for drama's sake to move the plot forward.
I honestly didn't expect my comment to go on this long HAHAHAHA but!! My thoughts on this half of the season aside, you did an amazing job on this video! Polin had more chemistry in S1 & 2 than in their own season
Maybe the purpose is that colin has to learn to love penelope especially with the lady whistledown secret however as of now, I see no chemistry. Also, maybe with him figuring out her secret identity, he will perhaps grow up and learn that love isn't conditional and this will mold him into a proper husband too because quitely frankly, I think pen is settling with him due to his lack of identity. She would also be settling if she chose debling as well because he cant provide her with the love she wants in her marriage. I would choose neither men tbh.
I hear you. I think dividing the season in half hurt the flow of the show. I wasn't feeling her begging for a kiss and then automatically he realizes he loves her. I think second part will make up for the flow in the first.

I agree 100%!!! He hasn’t earned Penelope’s forgiveness or shown her enough respect, and he still takes her for granted. She loves him WAAAAY more than he could ever love her. And his temporary insanity of lust doesn’t equal love. Also based on the trailer for part two of the season, it seems Penelope’s main focus will be on keeping Colin, worrying about losing him if he finds out her secret, etc. For the entire duration of their connection, she has been trying to win him over, make him notice her, earn his approval and love. At the start of the season, she admits why she’s upset, he apologizes….and she instantly forgives him. He finally notices her….and she’s his fiancé just like that? He didn’t have to earn her favor, approval, or love. It still feels like a completely one-sided relationship. Yes he got jealous over Lord Dublin…however it was completely obvious that Penelope was just planning to settle for Deblin, but not in love with him anyway. I could go on and on…
Wow!!!! Very well said and done. I felt something was lacking in those first four episodes. I couldn’t put my finger on it. But your commentary lays it out perfectly. I sure hope those next four episodes are significantly better. That said. I still loved all four episodes. Amazing costumes and scenery etc. the multiple story lines they managed to fit in. Although I must admit, I am enjoying the episodes for the sake of the story...I do agree it is too rushed and not a lot of these moments are earned. I wish this season could have been 10 episodes because I think this could have helped a lot. We needed more time for Colin (in my opinion) to work towards being forgiven for his previous behavior and also his putting the dots together on how he feels. I think it is much better observed from his thought process (although definitely red flags in moments from him) in the book that helped make him understand that he is seeing her in a different light. I do though think both actors have chemistry together. But I think they needed at least two episodes (AT LEAST) to showcase the work towards that earning of forgiveness and appreciation of who she is as well as him pining for her.

I loved season and I love polin as couple. I went back and watched S1 and 2 and there are moments where Colin is looking at pen with so much love that there is definitely feelings there so I don’t think they came out of no where. Also before they kissed there were moments of jealousy to me. Also I don’t feel it’s rushed it very realistic because this couple definitely reminds me of my relationship and a lot of my friends relationships they move fast. Their very awkward and sweet and that is what polin gives me. Also why should Colin suffer he said one comment but he shouldn’t suffer because he didn’t have feelings for penelope just because she did that not the worst behavior unlike other seasons. I also believe that one kiss is what it took because we would see moments before and that kiss kinda awakened him because in his journal it said he had been having intimacy but still felt lonely there was no emotional connection. I could go on lol. The only thing I agree with you with is we could’ve had more polin and to me that’s because I already loved them so much lol.
I normally don't chime in. It's ok for other fans to have a opinion on the show. If some fans don't think the chemistry isn't there yet and colin needs to do more, pleading, apologizing and begging. They are in their right to have that opinion.
Telling people S1 and S2 is enough Polin buildup is straight up gaslighting 😂 I hate when other content creators run with that lie ! All we got was Penelope being friendzoned and ignored and sidelined in favor of Colin's affections for Marina. Not a soul on this earth will ever make me believe a single kiss given out of pity suddenly made Colin realize his feelings all along. Miss me with that bullshit ! Their seduction lessons should have been longer at least. Lord Debling was also severely underused in the romantic plot. Their happy ending doesn’t feel earned y'all. It certainly doesn’t help that they got sidelined on their own season as well 😢

I don't know that much about this series and much less about the books. I think that seeing the other seasons affect the way we see this season. Unlike other seasons, the main male lead has not been a very noticeable character. Everyone knows Anthony and Benedict from season 1. Then Anthony has his own season. I also think the Friends to Lovers trope is a difficult one to do because you don't know when the feelings ignite. I absolutely believe that Colin esteemed Pen from the very beginning. He enjoyed her company and he loved being around her. They wrote letters to eachother, so to some degree, they had a very deep connection. He always shows a disdain when Pen speaks negatively about herself. When she asks to kiss her, I feel like he hesitated because he was afraid where it would all lead to, but I think there's a part of him that wanted to kiss her. He did it so gently and kissed her again. I think the kiss allowed him to realize the feelings his been afraid to feel.
I don't know about all of you but if I start loving my friend, I'll be afraid to feel those feelings. It can potentially ruin so many things. Once Colin knew how he felt, I don't think there was any reason to hesitate. Also, on her part too, she finally has the man of her dreams telling her all the things she dreamt of hearing, so she went for it.
We need to give Pen credit, she loved Colin because he was kind towards her and a good person. She knew that he meant his confessions.

The writing was so bad, it felt like a soap opera only relying on promotion hinting fans about sex scenes. They have 30 minutes of air time in 4 episodes and the emptiness of their interactions makes it completely unbelievable to buy their story.
When you think of Anthony and Kate you don’t think about their sex scene, people just talk about carriages and mirrors in this one… and the mkt is relying on that because they have nothing else to offer.

THIS! The writing was so bad, it felt like a soap opera only relying on promotion hinting fans about sex scenes. They have 30 minutes of air time in 4 episodes and the emptiness of their interactions makes it completely unbelievable to buy their story.
When you think of Anthony and Kate you don’t think about their sex scene only, people just talk about carriages and mirrors in this one… and the mkt is relying on that because they have nothing else to offer.

I agree with you. I feel like Colin only confessed when he did because they needed a cliffhanger for the second half.
They didn't have 8 episodes to reveal the romance, they had 4, and much of that was given over to other characters so, in reality, it was more like 2 episodes and Colin was flirting with, and sleeping with, other women for much of that time. That's a weird way to court a clever friend and respectable lady, Colin. I'm going to need more than "Colin was a bit jealous and wasn't enjoying the sex workers as much as he had previously" to feel anything here. Mate, Anthony had a full-on crisis over Kate.
I've been more excited about a nice meal than Colin is shown being about Penelope for 99% of season 3 (so far).
Agree-the Lord kinda took the danbury relationship. Colin basically lusted when he no longer had her, and, then, married because he is a 'gentleman'. I would have run as fast as possible to the dear Lord and denied all about ever going for colin. It would have blocked the incredible Featherington arc, though.
I find it believable. He always loved her, but as a romantic he was waiting for a bolt of lightning. His jealousy of Debling provided that.
Okay, so a long essay here on my take of Colin and Penelope's relationship, Sorry about being so lon😅
So basically, for the other two couples, it kind of started with a mutual attraction and with misunderstandings and bad communication between the couples, and during the episodes of their seasons, they got to know each other more deeply and thus fell in love and solved the problems they had in the final.
Pen and Colin, there's no reason to have this. They've both known each other since they were children, it's not something new. Their story/ this season has already started with love because, yes, friendship is love too.
Penelope was mad at the start but Colin didn't drag the drama by pride or whatever other reason and did not apologise like many male protagonists would do, no, Colin is sensitive about other people's feelings and cares deeply and he is a person who takes actions immediately, so he immediately knew he was in the wrong and the very next day he went to search her and apologise and offered his help to Penelope. Clearly through the seasons we see that Colin cares about what others think about him and he wants to feel accepted in the group of "grown ups", so I think that is why he says what he said last season. Is that okay? Obviously not, but he regrets it and he apologises, offered his help and in this first part he finally released that he doesn't care what others think about him or their expectations and he went for the person he truly cares about and who cares about him: Penelope. That is very human. Colin was just immature, and he needed to grow up more to be more in tune with his feelings and be more confident about who he really is.
Since the first season, and if we are to use our imagination and think that their story began much earlier as children (like it was said by Colin who talked about how they met, how charming he thought Pen was when he met her, how he remembered all the details of theid first meeting), they have been showing us how they understand and care for each other and respect each other too.
Colin always searched for Pen at the balls to talk to her and make jokes about society, how Pen is the only one who really pays attention to the philosophies that Colin wants to share with others about the trips he takes, but no one cares, including his family that or ignores it or complains about how much he talked about it, except Pen. How he talks it easily, as he doesn't do it with anyone else, the insecurities he feels because he doesn't feel like he hasn't found his purpose in life yet and Pen also shares her dreams with him. Colin asks Pen if she's okay when he feels something is wrong because he knows when something isn't right because he knows her better than anyone because he cares because he pays attention to her. How he defends Pen's family- because of her of course, the look of admiration and connection they both give at each other in the ball in season 1 when they are making jokes or in the second season, the look of longing he gives her when he returns from his trips and see her after months, or the look of pure joy when he sees her in the horse race and went immediately to talk to her or the look of enchantment he gives Pen when she tells him about her dreams, the letters exchanged between them (and how he said in episode 1 how he missed her/her letters), Colin defending Pen from Cressida bulling her, Colin dancing with her because he truly likes dancing with Penelope, always touching her when he can (like holding her hand), calling each other by their 1st name, breaking all the rules of etiquette with Penelope etc etc etc, this moments, for the high society of the 19th century, it is literally them already courting each other, so much so that Fife in the last season asks if Colin was courting her, they practically behave as married people might behave towards each other at that century. They know each other a thousand times more than many couples who got married in the 19th century.
The difference is that with Pen's insecurities plus people constantly saying he would never see as a woman, she thinks there's no chance of him wanting to be with her and Colin who doesn't see beyond their friendship (perhaps for fear of losing her friendship) and can't see beyond the little girl he met many years ago, they both remain in this friendship that borders on something more, but without both realising it.
Also, there is this aspect, in a lot of their scenes, Penelope is almost always with Eloise too or Eloise comes and interrupts their conversation/moments and takes Pen away, so it is hard for Colin to come about his feelings for Penelope before, because how much his sister is always with Penelope, however even him says in season 2 in Anthony's failed marriage, that he didn't know how Pen and Eloise were friends when they were nothing alike, showing he didn't see her as his sister or something like that, but because she was so constant in his life and in his family and with his sister, it was hard for him to see beyond the friendship. It took for him not having any correspondence with Penelope throughout his travels and missing it, her being mad and him having more time alone with her without Eloise constant presence or intervention for him to finally open his eyes, it had nothing to do with her change of wardrobe or another person being interested in her, though obviously he was jealous. Also, in the previous seasons Penelope dressed a lot like a "child", the cut of dresses and even the hair styles were very childlike, so obviously Colin, who for the first time wasn't virgin anymore, would notice Penelope started to dress more like a woman.
Basically, there are certain things that, even as friends, we have difficulty sharing, but they already have the important foundation in a love story being shown since season 1. Friendship, understanding, respect, protection, admiration, the care for one another, and loyalty.
What was missing in their relationship in till this point, unlike the other couples, was desire. Even Pen, who already had the idea that she was in love with him, was more innocent and without any idea of the awakening of sexual desire in their relationship and the same thing happens to him, Colin from the first season who never went to a brothel as Anthony says, so he was probably a virgin (and he is a romantic at his core just like Penelope) and in the second season he didn't even want to think about women, the only women he let near him were his sisters, his mother and of course his dear friend, Penelope who is special enough to overcome the barriers he imposed.
This first part, they are exploring more the desire that awakens in both parties after the first kiss, and even before the kiss Colin was already jealous when Pen was talking with that lord who the horse die and she almost touchex his arms we can see him given a look like he is bother by it and that lord who was a fan of lw, for example, the Nick Jonas music, Jealous was playing in the background in that moment. He is jealous not exactly because man are seeing how beautiful she is physically or because she changed the couleur of her dresses, but because when she can be more open and more herself with others, when she shows a slightly interest with others, when she only shows this side of her with him in till this moment, and like Colin said he loves this side of her so witty, cleaver and warm (like he said in the 1st episode), he knows others will too love her for it and that started to open his eyes why he was feeling the way he was feeling, why it bothered him so much and that started before the first kiss or Colin or Pen notice Debbling as a real prospect. Meanwhile Colin tries to help Pen and at the same time he tries to suppress what he feels and the desire to continue to go to her like before and talk freely without holding back, without worrying what others might think and without needing to change his personality like he is doing with the people around him. He tries to respect her choices by not interfering, but more time passes, and he can't hold any longer.
When Pen reads his diary that he's been with women and he writes: "I'm amazed at how it's possible to feel so much intimacy (physically), but also such great distance (emotionally).", it's basically him admitting that he's in shock that one person can be with people so intimately, but without a sentimental connection and this bothers him a lot and he tells his "friends" in the bar, how much he feels lonely. He can't be like Anthony from the first season, or Benedict or any man in society, he doesn't feel satisfied with himself by having 5 minutes of intimacy with unknown women and leaving them as if it meant nothing (so much so that is shown how much he wants to get over with this persona like is shown in episode 2 when he is in the brothel with those two women he looks to the clock saying he was late to a meeting (with Pen in the market) and cuts to him being early and actually being waiting for her), he tries to follow what other men do but he doesn't likes it, he needs to feel a more deeply connection in these most vulnerable moments (even him being with 2 women in the brothel shows a detachment of being a libertine, of form a connection), he doesn't feel that passion and the connection that he is searching for. Colin is posing a persona to the high society because it seems only like this people praise him (like Anthony congratulate him for his admires, his "friends"/peers saying he is more fun because now he speaks about women and tries to behave like them), while he becomes more like himself because of Penelope, in till the point he can't no longer pretend to be someone he is not.
He finally feels this complete connection that he longs for the moment he kisses Penelope for the first time. He feels the feelings, the love and the care that were always there for her and finally with a first more intimate touch with Penelope, with her authorisation for him to kiss her, the physical desire for Penelope finally awakes/is discovered (though I think it was hidden this desire, like in season 2 when he talks that he wanted to invest in her cousin Jack mine because he saw the "exquisite necklace" she was wearing in Anthony's weeding, indicating he was looking to her bosom). Basically, everything he was looking for in a person, what he was looking for since the first season and what he was looking for in the 17 cities he visited, it was always there in London in front of his house, and that the only one kiss and everything got aligned in his mind.
Everything culminates and explodes in the carriage scene where he feels true connection and a passion like they never felt before. But first Colin asks everything with Pen's consente. First to enter the carriage, then he needs confirmation that she chose/is in love with Debbling because if she did he would respect her decisions and feelings and when she denied he finally confess, then when is touching her, he is always checking that she wants it too. Colin has the courage to declare himself, he doesn't waste time to get the girl because of fears or pride no he has the courage to try to change the status of their relationship at the risk of losing the connection/friendship that he has always kept in his heart for Penelope so dearly and it is so important to him and Penelope finally admits what she's always held dear and a truth she held because of her insecurities and fears : that she wants more than friendship from him.
Even the first kiss, that she asked, it was already a bold move from her, the shy little girl of season 1 or 2 would never do it, but for the first time, with fear of never marrying and never feeling the intimacy of another person and of become a spinster (everyone saying/whispering in the ball about it, her own mother saying this to her), she asks to the one person she trusts and she has feelings for. It is the first time she forgets her fears and gains courage for asking what she really wants and confessing what she truly fears while also thinking she would completely let go of Colin (It would mean anything, she said) and with that Colin go down bad for her (because it mean everything for him), we see in his expression that he just had a revelation that the kiss had much more significance and feelings that any others he had (and that was before Debbling and Penelope were trying to get to know one another), so much so that he really do what he said in episode 8 of season 2, he wouldn't officially court her or wait another minute or put obstacles for them, he will take action immediately and directly ask her to marry him.
Thank you for eloquently talking about things I did not have the words to describe when watching this first half of the season (I truly hope some things are solved in the second part).
It definitely feels like...we were robbed of Colin this season as well.
We know Pen loves him, but because we are meant to see most of the series up until season 3 from her perspective, we are right there with her questioning every hint. Every word. Every glance. Does he love her? Am I reading too much into it? Only to be struck with that "I would never dream of courting Penelope Featherington." We are expected to have as much understanding of him that Pen has. Final nail on coffin. Cue season 3.
Too much emphasis was placed on Colin's "persona" he took on...and he took it on a little too convincingly to the point where when Violet was calling him sensitive I about did a double take (what he said about Penelope at the end of s2 is hardly what I would call sensitive but sure, okay). Why not have him hesitate a bit more when the ladies are flirting with him if they get a bit too forward to show how this is really an act? You don't have to show him actually picking up stis paying for...well...*that* only to then be like "isn't it tiresome/lonely." Like...what happened to his honor? He was a flirt before. We knew this. So many people, myself included, thought it was Benedict in that scene with the two ladies at first only to be horrified that Colin had gone that route. Ew.
They could have achieved a lot simply by *showing* flashbacks to seasons 1 and 2 from Colin's perspective when he's contemplating in the room with the lamp that eventually brightens. Show him wearing the outfits from back then and being genuinely excited to see Penelope (don't just tell us and expect us to believe it after the crud he put her through in that insufficient apology). Show him talking to other people and then eagerly leaving them when he spots her without her noticing because her back was turned. Show a moment when he is in one of those 17 cities and sad because no letters came for him again. Don't show him smug when he told her he missed her! Show him actually BEING SAD THAT HE DIDN'T HEAR FROM HER AT ALL! Show us that moment when he saw her again after returning in s2 and his gaze was fixed on her before Hyacinth and Gregory ran in to greet him. What was he thinking in that moment? Why did he look at her that long? GIVE US COLD HARD EVIDENCE THAT THE LOVE WAS THERE ALL ALONG AND HE JUST DIDN'T REALIZE IT!
The actors did a fantastic job, too but it was in spite of the writing and directing choices, not because of it. It's Netflix that's the problem. They just had to break things in half and give less screen time to the main couple because the ensemble cast demanded more screen time. They can afford more episodes to give all of the storylines tender loving care. They just chose not to bother with it, and because of there being less screen time they broke the show don't tell rule. It hurt the storytelling badly.
Yikes, this might be the first time I disagree with you but that’s ok, we’re allowed to have different opinions.
As for me, I do feel like Colin likes Penelope as a person, and what made me realise this was the market scene in episode 2. In that scene, we have Colin saying she doesn’t need lessons, to which Penelope argues she’s a lost cause. Colin again refutes it, and then he goes on about the story of how they met. He’s affirming her as a person, something which Penelope didn’t even get from Eloise. I think that people are so annoyed that this scene in particular is told in words instead of using a flashback that they don’t focus on what Colin in particular says, and how they interact with each other (which credit to both Luke and Nicola since they did a really good job with the banter and chemistry here). He says that in the first time they met, she was charming, teasing him mercilessly. We’ve never seen this side of Penelope come out fully with Colin in prior seasons, but in this scene in particular, that charming, teasing side of her comes out around him. They are flirting with each other without realising it. The way they lean into each other, the witty back and forth they have in this scene, it encapsulates all that he said he likes about her in episode 1 “you are warm, kind and smart”. They can be at ease around each other, in a way that they can’t with others. I think they are in love with each other because they can be themselves around each other, and it feels weird to see people dismiss this valid reason as to why Colin feels that way in turn for Penelope, because that it why Penelope loves Colin too, is it not?
I think of it this way: whereas Anthony and Kate challenged each other and that’s why they love each other, Colin and Penelope make each other feel at ease and that’s why they love each other. In prior seasons, we got Colin enquiring after Penelope so we took that to understand that was why she liked him (the purpose conversation, when he noticed that Penelope was wearing a new dress in season 1, the “what-a-barb” scene in the same season, the philosophical musings they share in season 2, he’s shown invested interest in her, again in ways even Eloise hasn’t, he asks “and what of you?”, he makes sure the conversation isn’t just about him, even if it starts that way, and even this season with asking why she is looking for a husband, asking whether she is ok, constantly enquiring after her this season). Also people who are confused by Penelope ending up with an insecure man forget that she is insecure too. That is the whole reason they find solace in each other, they are insecure, but they tend to lift each other up, something which I’m sure will be pretty prevalent in part 2 as Penelope learns to reconcile the Lady Whistledown side of herself with Miss Penelope Featherington and as Colin finds his purpose in his writing (still kinda mad that they didn’t make the journal scene last longer).
But yeah, it is clear to me that Colin loves Penelope for the same reason she does him: they are at ease around each other, enough to be flirting without seeing it at least. And again, credit to Luke Newton because you can see Colin feel confused by the attraction to the banter they had just shared in the market scene, you see him linger in the market, and the small smile that stays on his face, then he shakes himself out of the stupor and he walks off. The camera lingered on him long enough for me to catch on to look at his expressions. This season in particular is carried by both his and Nicola’s acting as they rely on so much of the micro-expressions since Colin in particular is such an internal character, but I would argue even Penelope tends to be an internal character, though to a lesser extent since she has LW to externalise her feelings. I am mad that the cameraman doesn’t catch more of Luke’s hand acting (the sweets scene in episode 3 in particular did have a lot of Mr Darcy-esque hand acting from him that unfortunately most people don’t catch because the cameraman doesn’t focus some shots on his hands which is very frustrating.)
Also, kinda annoyed about the scenes they chose for flashbacks in the candlelight scene in episode 4, I would’ve chosen the market scene and some scenes from prior seasons to convey that he’s realising that Penelope might like him back, not the hand cut scene. Also it’s not clear to a lot of people that episode 4 is him realising that Penelope may have feelings for him and not him realising his feelings for Pen. We see that by episode 3 that he has realised that he has feelings for Penelope, to such an extent that he was about to confess his feelings, so it only makes sense that episode 4 is him realising that Penelope has feelings for him. But yeah, the flashback scenes chosen don’t help with the audience realising that Colin himself is realising that Penelope may have feelings for him, I had to add two and two and fill in the gaps which kinda makes me annoyed at the writers for making me do that. Also, I think we all can agree the brothel scenes were useless in the grand scheme of things. I already know Colin is putting on a rakish facade, no need to hammer it in with these two scenes, gosh!
Well, reading some of the comments about Colin (here and elsewhere), a surprising number of people did not get the fact that he was putting on a front. Maybe the showrunners/producers didn't hammer hard enough! 😂I totally agree with you about the Polin - situation though. He just needs a little longer to realise what's going on because he tries so hard to fit in with society's expectations that he must let go of that first before he can rediscover his true self and his own feelings. THANK YOU. I've been watching this with my friend and in every single episode I exclaim at least once how I "don't ship them" or "I hate them together". I've never bought it. It's never felt genuine. I get angry whenever they're on screen. Disgusted even. Francesca and Kilmartin are dull too. Nothing in this show is worth rooting for so far.
Also we didn’t really get to know Colin like in S1 and 2 in the second episodes we get to know Simon’s history w his dad and Anthony after his dad is stung by the bee. Would have been nice to see a clip of Colin maybe on his travels. Learning about him deeper. I did appreciate them showing him reading the letters Pen wrote to him. He realized she is in fact Lady Whistledown
I haven’t read the books, but i think from the tv series plots, with Ladt Danbury so close with the Bridgertons and their love life, it would seem a lot of work and screentime to also havebher helping the Featherington girls. Maybe even like a betrayal to work both at the same time.
Hi, I’m back after pondering this to say expand even further in my point and say that they are not supposed to be in love with each other at this point, none of the couples were, they just loved the feelings that were evoked when they were around the other person: Simon loved the ease of conversation around Daphne, not Daphne herself at this point. Anthony loved the fact that Kate challenged him at this point, he didn’t know much about Kate other than she was the overprotective sister of Edwina, the girl she wanted to marry. Likewise Colin doesn’t truly know Penelope yet, he just loves the way he can be himself around her. The difference is they are engaged because of the arrogance that comes with friends to lovers: the question that is posed by even Eloise in the trailer is: can he love you if he truly doesn’t know you? Colin likes Penelope, Colin has feelings for Penelope as he has said, he is intrigued by her, he enquires about her in a way no one has, but he doesn’t fully know her. I feel the same applies to Penelope, she doesn’t know Colin, she doesn’t know this man is almost as insecure as she is about herself. This doesn’t feel earned because it is not earned. It is the arrogance of friends to lovers that this season is questioning, how well do you truly know each other? Can you accept these parts of your partner that you have recently discovered within the relationship? When you can, that is when you are truly in love with each other. Both have put each other up on a pedestal: Colin thinks Penelope is the sweet girl next door, which is partly true, but he doesn’t know she has a vicious nature about her. Penelope thinks that Colin is distinguished, he is not grappling with much, we know that is not true, he is struggling with his own purpose, his own insecurities. I think we’re used to the couples sorting out these issues about themselves before getting together, but because of the arrogance of friends to lovers, these fools think that they are done with their journey, they are not. Until they learn to fully trust each other enough to lay all their insecurities on the table, how can they love each other?

I think it’s sad how fanatics of this series don’t allow others who actually have a brain, expose eloquently their criticism of this season and have a different opinion.
Dreaming of a crush is a huge sign of both attraction & affection. However I wish they had shown more of it, of how it was effecting him emotionally as well. They kept setting them apart for some reason or another.
I have that feeling with Kate and Anthony. I don't feel their love. There is too much bitterness and too little sweetness between them in season 2. They lacked those sweet moments where they would get along (similar with pen and colin and their friendship ), which would make me feel like they were a match. I get the enemies to lovers, but there was too much anger to make me believe that they like each other. That feels like lust and being horny, not loving each other. I tried to see it, but I can't. I felt the chemistry between Daphne and Simon. I have seen the moments where they just liked each other beyond lust; with Kate and Anthony, I didn't. I had to let it out of my chest. I feel like I'm the only one who feels that way, and I am confused.
Honestly tho I haven’t even watched this video yet I just came to agree LMAO. I thought Colin would slowly start to realize how great Penelope was but it all felt so rushed🥲 and throughout part 2 of this season I just kept feeling like he really didn’t love her and only cared abt himself. 😭
100% They needed more screentime. We needed to see their friendship! Especially in part 2...where is their friendship? Where are their jokes, their connection. Colin is too serious and doesn't even feel like himself due to the writing. We needed some flashbacks. We needed to see Colin's POV. They sidelined him and did him dirty!!
I disagree that they have little to no chemistry. They have chemistry, the writers and producers just didnt feed off of it. They focused on them for two minutes before showing another character. Watching this season I could see that this couldn't possibly be the same people that created s1 &2, and I was right. One of the show frontrunners were changed. And you see that with how they DONT focus on developing them like in past seasons. Penelope has such potential, I cant wait for part 2. It seems the second part will address alot.
With all the different stories happening it‘s hard to think this season should be on Colin and Pen.. with Daphne it was so much about her, it was clear. With Anthony it was the same. Sure there were side stories but the focus was clear.. this time tho it was all over the place. And Polin could have used all screentime there was.. friend to lovers can‘t happen as fast as love at first sight. Collin says he won‘t marry Pen, goes on vacation and 4 episodes later he proposes?
7:03 In my opinion the same treatment wasn't given to Colin is because different from Kate and Anthony who didn't know one another and so Anthony needed to show/prove to her he wasn't the man she thought he was because of Kate first impression of him, this couple didn't have to.
Colin and Penelope have known one another for years. She knows when he is truthful or not, when he is being serious or not, when he truly feels sorry or not, and he immediately went to apologise when he knew why she was mad, he didn't drag it by pride or whatever, the next day the man was there asking for her forgiveness and with a warm and lovely speech about how much he was sorry and how much he wanted her in his life, showing how much he care for her and her opinion about him. Because of this new persona that he took, he didn't told her the reason, but in the carriage he basically says it, he tries to be part of the "grown ups", he doesn't feel like people takes him seriously, that he is part of the society because they don't accept him the way he is. He made that comment with those man, because he saw her as a friend but also because he was embarrassed, not of Pen, but how everyone was mocking about his feelings/vulnerability (who never with family or friends who start to tease you about someone and get embarrassed), he was immature, he didn't have the confidence to own up to his feelings, that is human. Penelope, because she knows him and she has a butter heart, she forgave him, and he offered his help in return, showing how serious he was and how much he cares for what she needs and wants.
Different from Anthony, who let his pride to get in the way to admit he was in the wrong, though to be fare to Anthony, he too didn't know Kate and so he didn't need to give her any explanations at the time, well except when he started to curt her sister, he never explained or apologise in the beginning, and so Kate had no reason to like him or believed in any of his intention even with him trying to be a good suitor to win he pass to curt Edwina.
Honestly I’m glad that I’m not the only one who feels the relationship wasn’t earned because while I do like how it was mentioned that Colin and Penelope were probably closer when they were children, but with how things were like in season 1 and 2 between it just felt like Colin was just saying they were friends was because Pen hung out with Eloise a lot. If the show gave us flashbacks from the time from when they were really close as kids and how they slowly drifted away from each other due to society having certain expectations of them due to their titles and positions in society. Then I would feel like the banter would have more meaning and more a spark to it.

I don't think the writers took into account that *Colin, no matter what kind of dreams he was having about our Queen Penelope, would have been reticent to **_trust_** his feelings about her **_because of Marina._* He wanted to marry Marina in season 1, felt completely disillusioned once her deception was uncovered by Lady Whistledown, so his guard would be up even with Penelope. They desperately needed to have 12 episodes, and drop two episodes each week for six weeks. We needed at least 4 episodes to watch Colin fight himself, while Penelope ruminated over her hurt at what he had said about her at the end of season two. Have Penelope being courted by Lord Debling, and perhaps at the end of the 5th episode, have Colin declare his love for her and spend two episodes _EARNING_ her love. Even if they then have their intimate encounter, let the very next thing be him finding out that Penelope is Lady Whistledown. The writers FAILED miserably.
Polin feels very much like what they did with Colin and Marina, he’s all in all the way. And as much as I love the fell first/fell harder dynamic, it wasn’t very well executed at all. I wish they had done something with Penelope full on Resenting him ever since that comment at her Own Mother’s Ball and just be angry that not only does he basically say he cannot love her, but that it’s beyond imagining To Love Her. Essentially rejecting her And ruining her prospects in one fell swoop because men Talk just as much as women and if someone as in good standing as a Bridgerton, and someone who’s known her all her life, doesn’t consider her worth marrying than there Must be something wrong with her. I wanted her to be Mad or despondent, I wanted him to grovel to make it up to her and he basically got of scott free for it and as much as I love Polin, it was infuriating.

For me, in order to watch S3 right, I view it in the way that Colin already has tender feelings for Pen in S1 & S2. (In regency era is really difficult for 2 unmarried opposite sex to be good friends), so when she is not replying to his letters off season he panicked because she is important. Then together with that kiss in S3 Ep 2 sorta awaken all his feelings, though I do agree to a certain point lust weighs more. 🙊
I didn't feel their chemistry at all. In fact, at times, it felt cringey. I wish they would've showed Colin's growth a bit more.

No because even after part 2 I still don't believe it... I think the main problem is that they just didn't focus on polin enough with all the other storylines going on but on top of that... Colin just seems so indifferent the whole time??.. idk man very unsatisfying imo
I do not understand all the comments about letting Colin pine and grovel. First of all that seems a very skewed concept of what love is. Do you all think you want to make the person you love grovel and pine for whatever reason? That's not love, that is at most a very stereotypical trope in romance novels. Secondly, I don't think that Pen is mentally and within the storyline in a position to say no to Colin's proposal. She has been in love with him for ages, she had her chances with Deblin ruined and is again in a position of desperation. And here comes an offer for the better option! Colin proposes - I mean seriously, ladies, you think she should have gone all haughty and say no and risk the one thing (besides LW) that she really really wants? And thirdly, in books and sadly in real life, women love the most undeserving men. Since this is a story, they will work it out somehow, the real struggle comes after the commitment and that's also a story worth telling. Remember, Pen has a not so nice secret, which will be difficult enough for Colin to take in, accept and forgive, and I feel it kind of balances the not so nice behaviour of Colin before they get together.
In movies Penelope's family is more agreeable compared to books. Yes, Portia doesn't notice Penelope, before she gets engaged with Colin. But Portia is trying to survive and have the best possible life for her and her daughters. In the book they tries to rob Penelope.
No he doesn't yet. Even in the book, his love confession come later when Pen published the last paper revealing that Cressida wasn't LW and made Colin angry.
Excellent video!!! I watched your previous one on Polin and I largely shared your sentiments with regard to how the show is handling this pairing (as well as the overwhelming amount of storylines). Colin did not work hard enough in the show to earn being with Penelope, and it would have been good to show more of Lady Danbury's involvement too (thank you for bringing up the books! I haven't read them so you including that context is so important!). I susbcribed when i watched the first one 😄💗💗💗

It's so upsetting that they didn't make proper friends to lovers (because Colin and Penelope aren't friends - we are told that they are friends, characters and writers constantly discuss how they are friends, but they are more of acquaintances than anything else)
I was waiting for so much pinning and drama. I wanted Colin to realise that he's been in love with Pen this whole time. I wanted him to see her wardrobe changed and new hair and makeup and realise that she's the most beautiful woman he's ever seen. I wanted him to stare at her across the room and missing everything around him. I wanted him to want her, and instead he wants her not being with somebody else.
That's a bummer. They rather redeemed themselves in second half, otherwise I'll be seething
I never liked show Colin. there is this valiant savior complex is there with the show colin. "I am the one who should protect this women. I am the one who is capable and all of these women cannot handle the life without my help" Sort of mentality. Then he would give the women the sweet chuckled lines to hide that fact. There is such a superior manliness is there in his character. So was Anthony and Kate cut the cord right there. And that caused Anthony to fell for her. Penelope is the only possible person for colin to realize that, all women as not this helpless creatures waiting to be rescued by him. He should have learned it from Marina, but he didn't. And in the books, Colin really admired and enjoyed Penelope. Her wits, her meaningful and wise conversation between them actually caused him to realize the quality of the woman that Penelope is. May be they might have had it through the letters, but we never saw that. Literally he is the only one who read that. Then show colin was running here and there without an idea what to do and rushed to this mess of an ending. Where he stood there being utterly stupid without literally knowing anything about his wife. He still don't know about the scam his mother in law pulled off which he himself is invested in. This is a mess. And un popular opinion: Luke Newton doesn't have the charisma to be the main lead. Just because you look good doesn't make you the lead

On the 2nd point of Colin saying he’d never marry Pen and then how that plays out in the first half of this season, I 💯 agree and this is the part that bothers me. What I really hoped to see from Pen this season was her standing her ground and defending her value. I thought that’s the direction we were headed after she confronted him for what he said, and even after the way she’s pushed back on her mother. But then, as soon as Colin shows interest in her, poof! She’s a doe-eyed puppy dog for him all over again. C’mon, Pen. Make the boy work for it! What makes these stories so interesting (imo at least) is the character growth. Where is Pen’s character growth this season?????
The ending scene Was so weird, Unhealthy. Who professes their love after being friends since childhood, Then fingers their "love". I get it carnal desire , But not even a make out? Like he went straight to it and something about it feels like she deserves more. It's like teenage sex or objectification. It does feel forced.
I think they didn't give enough time to give Colin's point of view of falling in love. With Penelope we have had 2 seasons now.
There was just too much happening, they didn't put enough efforts in showing how & why Colin realized his love for Penelope. How he fell deeper in love after falling for her.

You made excellent points. I didn't really think about it that way before. The writers really rushed their story, which is a real shame because to me it seems as though Pen and Colin story is much more intimate. I'll still be watching Thursday but damn why they do my girl like this!
You’re right. It wasn’t earned. The fact it took a sympathy kiss for Colin to realize his feelings for Pen gave cliche high school rom-com vibes. He seems to love her loyalty to him. Pen knows him more than he knows himself. But it is not the other way around. Plus what can he offer besides “I’m a Bridgerton.” Lord Debling is wealthy too but at least he has interesting hobbies.
I too found it to be a bit forced. But I'm willing to suspend disbelief and see how it unfolds!
no, bc u are right TT they were the reason that I starthed watching Bridgerton, I was sooo exited to get to their season, like, if it wasn't for them I would've dropped it at s1 and when it was finally their moment it felt... incomplete? I needed a little more of Colin falling for Pen :(

This is exactly what I felt watching this season. I am still very interested in seeing how their love story unfolds on screen, especially with the big reveal, but nothing so far as felt earned with them. I mean, him barging in and making a scene at the ball, in FRONT of the incredibly wealthy man that had expressed his intent to marry her... I would have been HOT. The fact that he does not even begin to understand how damning that could have been for her.... how that could have been her one and only shot. I mean that nature man basically implied that Penelope would have cheated on him with Colin. In a way, it kind of felt like his marriage proposal to her at the end was so very rushed. At the very least I think they should have had that argument and proposal BEFORE they got down and dirty to settle her mind about whether or not she was really off the market foreal this time. Idk that scene felt so disrespectful to me considering their time period and the stakes involved.
The book is better of explaining the Romance between pen and Colin as some one that read the booo the season disappointed me
All this is proving me to me is that she show would thrive as a 20 episode formula structure. Especially considering the following siblings to come who already have huge personalities. For some shows the 8 episode systems works. It worked Simon and Daphne we were being introduced to them. Season 2 was still fairly new and they managed to establish Kate and her family dynamic. I fully believe season 3 should have been the expansion of episodes. Y
Use specific episode to expand on your characters and tell their stories. One thing I’m gonna say though you can’t tell Fran’s story in 8 episodes. 💀💀
Penelope deserves better. Colin is not the one for her in my opinion. This is me after watching the part 2. Not a single chemistry....the whole thing seems forced.

I dont think Colins in love with Penelope either (or rather he still doesnt realize it in the show yet) . Yeah we got a "confession" and it was decent but he said he had FEELINGS for her not that he LOVED her. I think his real love confession is gonna be after he finds out about Penelope being LW and thats gonna give him the push he needs (I hope!).Mind you I read their book before s3 release, so my opinions on somethings can be biased lol but I agree with you! overall, my opinion on the season is though its NOT bad, it definitely couldve been better if they did things differently (mainly more screen time/moment of them falling for each other and other common criticisms its gotten) but despite that I cant say Im personally not enjoying the show!

have you read the book? it's the same he even goes to ask Daphne how do you know when you are in love, it is called slow burn he does not realise he loves her until nearly the end when she is threatened for being LW. I think you will be satisfied with the ending as it sounds dramatic when he declares his love
As someone who does not know the books and only the show I do not feel Polin at all. I think the show relies too heavily on telling instead of showing. I neither got that Colin is supposed to be the sensitive one nor that he is a passionate writer. In the show it is said that Pen and Colin write letters to each other but firstly I took it as a normal way of communication as they didn't have phones, hello, and secondly they never read any of their letters aloud that would make me feel there was any special connection between them.
Both the Duke and Anthony also got flashbacks of their pasts but we haven't gotten that with Colin so i feel a bit disconnected form him too
2:18 I think Lady Danbury suspects that Penelope is Lady Whistledown… which is why she would let everyone else busy themselves with trying to figure it out… and the monetary prize more than likely would influence the author to confess… not necessarily to the ton but to her privately.
At the beginning of season 2, Lady Danbury already knew that Kate arrived late because she went horseback riding without a chaperone. She let Kate know that she knows all that goes on in her home. She hosts the first ball of every season, which is written about afterwards, which means the author is someone in attendance…someone who isn’t too busy mingling and therefore has all the time to be meddling. I don’t think she would expose her identity to anyone simply because she understands her. She was once in a similar precarious position which we learned about in Queen Charlotte. She also knew that Kate liked Anthony early on. The conversation she had with Kate the night after she watched their first dance was pivotal in helping Kate to acknowledge her true feelings. When Kate insisted that she disliked him, instead of telling her how she felt she simply replied “whatever it is you feel.” We learned in Queen Charlotte that Lady Danbury disliked her husband, and therefore she knew what dislike was enough to know that Kate did not dislike Anthony. She wanted Kate to be honest with herself. I think she wants the same thing for “Lady Whistledown”
I think there is a friendship but it’s a silent friendship since Lady Whistledown is supposed to be anonymous.

It’s straight out of their book though of Colin falling for Pen thjs quickly. In the book actually he falls the second he kisses her cux the carriage scene takes place the day after their first kiss😂🤷♀️ in the show though, I would’ve made it more romantic, if I were to direct this story, since they are already changing the story, I would’ve had Pen and Colin’s letters to each other played in the background as a narration when Colin starts falling for Pen to show the progression of his feelings instead of him just looking at her time to time 🤷♀️ I would’ve added more weight into their conversation after Colin cuts his hand about his purpose in life, like how the book suggested it cuz it was during that time that Pen encourages Colin to publish his journals cuz as a man he doesn’t have anything to lose, and In the book Colin only interacts with Pen during her visits to Bridgerton house or when he dances with her atleast once in every ball. So he sort of starts realizing how easy it is to talk to Pen as suppose to any other lady. I also think the director mixed up the stories of Colin and Ben’s internal problems cuz of the orders of their story changed, that’s why its really hard to dish out Colin’s problem of finding his purpose in life🤷♀️🤔 cuz in the book, Colin feels left behind but then he sees Pen and realizes he too can do anything if she as a woman can be successful writer for 12 years. But in the show, Ben is the one whose having the same problem so they changed Colin’s problem as to not being able to fit in the society just like Pen 🤷♀️but If you read the book, then you’ll actually know how quickly they fall for each other. Like literally Pen waits for Colin 12 years, but it only takes Colin first kiss and the carriage ride to ask Pen to marry him. In the book Colin moves so quickly into marrying Pen, that he goes to Daphne to ask how do you know you are in love? And Daphne replies that it’s different for everyone and love grows with time.
Hey there! I thought him falling in love with Pen in the book was more gradually kinda like in the show. He did start liking her romantically quickly but there was a lot of moments where he seem to be questioning if he was in love. He didnt accept/realized he loved her until that "moment" that happened at their engagement party.
I think thats the way Show Colin is gonna be. He asked to marry her yes and said he had feelings for her but to me that wasnt he REAL love confession. That's gonna come up later (hopefully with some lines i liked from his speech❤)

During that time Pen will comfort him and let him know that she loves him and always has. And I hope Pen calls him a mess “but you are my mess” line even though in the book it’s Colin who says that! Cuz the shows Colin is actually a mess
Lady Danbury has been like a mother to Violet and therefore has looked after her and her family. And I see her mothering people who are associated with the Bridgertons.
Colin is definitely giving more so jealousy than passionate love.
I think they moved the relationship fast because they are going to have a blowout with Colin finding out Penelope is Lady Whistledown whom Colin hates with a passion.
I don't recall Lady Danbury has interact with any of the Featherington throughout the whole show. In fact I've seen her interact with everyone else but teh Featheringtons
You put out some really good points and its would have been nice to see Polin being friends maybe not as close as how Penelope and Eloise but still. To me after watching the first time I thought the kiss was too quick to giving Colin the reason to fall for Pen? So if he kissed her in season two he will never have said he wouldn't be caught courting her? On the positive side at least the Body plus woman is seen as desirable because of a kiss.
I yhink that one gesture he could make would be to write her love letters or let her read his diary.
I think he took for granted she would always be around. A spinster in the making so he could have all of the words of affirmation and praise he needed from his neighbor and little sisters bff. But free to rake or marry some conventional trophy babe. As soon as his security blanket was gone though he felt her absence. Despite h5us newfound bravado. The Estrangement between the girls was palpable to him. Her makeover and the interest of a socially superior rival made him see her differently not just as a woman but as one who was actually willing and capable of leaving far away and of being both worthy and desirable beyond what he could offer. Suddenly she wouldn't be available, accessible or interested in him. And he was the one who didn't measure up. And she looked at Debling the way she previously reserved for him. She didn't need him to give her a dance at every gathering. Ad he realized had she been loooking she Could have done better than him all along. He was lucky she had chosen him for her affection or attentionand if he didn't choose her someone else would. And she wasn't waiting.
