    I don’t need to watch reviews, since I’ve already purchased and played the hell out of both Sunless Seas and Sunless Skies. I was feeling nostalgic today though, and wanted to find a video of someone who loved Sunless Skies as much as I did just talking about it so I could go “oh yeah, I loved that!”
    Thanks for making the perfect video for today!

    What sunless sea achieved, what no other game could, was the relieve You feeled deep inside, when returning to London Harbour.
    I have much less time in Sunless Skies as in Sunless Seas, but both games are great! Thank You for reminding me to pick Sunless Skies uo again!

    7 Months late but it's great to see such an in depth look at one of my favourite games. Shame that so few people have played it because it's an absolute gem.

    Man, I fell in live with this game when I first got it, but always died early on so I played it on and off. But I was replaying it yesterday, and when I discovered the secrets withing the Parzival, I was literally slackjawed

    You certainly seem very passionate about it. Picked them both up today, not my usual type of game or RPG but will give it a shot and see. Thanks for your vid.

    Check out Cultist Simulator and Book of Hours, written by the lead writer of Sunless Sea. Also, a House of Many Doors is inspired by Sunless Sea and is pretty solid~

      In his other video about sunless zea he mentioned he couldn't get into cultists simulator.
      But he also said he had a hard time getting into sunless seas too so maybe one day!

    My biggest complaint was the unending dread and anticipation. I want to explore and navigate the world without being in a constant state of panic. The brief moments of respite do not last long enough to let fear dissipate.

      I definitely got that feeling at the start, but after getting more and more familiar with the mechanics, world, and enemies, I defo got more confident with venturing farther out, though you're never totally safe in this game, true.

    • @eamonmulholland3159
      @eamonmulholland3159 Před 9 měsíci +5

      I felt that way in Sunless Sea, especially Zubmariner, but Skies is a lot more forgiving in some ways, and in my Truth playthrough I definitely crossed a power threshold where I had no financial worries, the best engine, the best 3 guns, and lots of health, to the point that even the Blue Kingdom enemies where not too scary. I think that was fitting for the end of that questline though.

    i wish this game made a better job of explaining what is inside each well and why (spoilers follow). supposedly old toms well only holds the bones of the judgement of the reach, but in the old tom questline he makes a bargain with something in the well and then throws you in and you see some kind of golden garden where you spend the rest of eternity since you cant climb out. in the well of the wolf there is some kind of ur devil who was cast in there cause he refused to sing but for some reason the incognito princess wants to marry him? and in the well in eleutheria there is some kind of playwright stuck in there who starts to drag you into a forced theatre play to escape? very weird.

    Great review! Agreed on almost all points, I just came to love skies more than seas 😊
    My favorite track is London Lights. Ever since my first time getting to retire my captain (instead of dying lol) I've set up shop with my home base in Albion. Whenever I pick up the gane and go on long quests to different regions and I fly back to port in London my song comes on and it feels like home

    One of the Writers from Fallen London/Sunless Sea created his own game, Cultist Simulator. I would LOVE to hear your opinion of it and even if you dont make a video I would 100% recommend just because of its atmosphere and gameplay!

    • @candletype1a447
      @candletype1a447  Před 11 měsíci +7

      Ah, my experience with Cultist Simulator wasn't too great unfortunately haha. I was really hyped to try it based on how much I love Alexis Kennedy's writing, but despite trying on three different occasions, I couldn't get into it at all. The vibe and themes seem fantastic, but I just couldn't quite wrap my head round the gameplay mechanics. That said, there's a chance I'll give it another go at some point, or his new game Book of Hours which is out in a couple weeks.

    • @Ezghoul1
      @Ezghoul1 Před 11 měsíci +2

      @candletype1a447 if it's been a while since you've last played, I guess they have updated the ui and tool tips a bit. Just enough that it isn't completely abstract now >< . I bounced pretty hard off Cultist Simulator when it first came out also just because I couldn't progress after a while but I loved the setting/writing.

    • @rowanwilson5859
      @rowanwilson5859 Před 6 měsíci

      Try Book of Hours! Its exceptional and far less weird and frustrating mechanically than skies. Fallen London is a banger game too if you can stand the play for 10 minutes twice a day type of thing it is. The questline "Seeking Mr. Eatens Name" is imo the best piece of writing in the whole FL universe, topping even the Uttermost East from Seas.
      House of Many Doors is another game similar to Seas thats great as well. @@candletype1a447

      @@candletype1a447 i hate cultist simulator because everything is on a timer. i just cant deal with that. but book of hours i enjoy quite a lot (although these games are more puzzle and less exploration, hard to compare to the sunless titles, they come with a similar athmosphere and worldbuilding which is cool)

  • @weertangel7231

    Its been ages since i played this game, it has such a great vibe to it and it was the first Fallen London game i came across.
    I tried Sunless Sea after i played this one but it just does't compare gameplay wise to this one.
    All in all a great video though i'm suprised u did't touch on the characters u can recruit couse i love some of their stories alot.

      The devs admit that they didn't really know what they were doing with seas. I still love it because I've been playing fallen london since launch, and I could get past the jank to enjoy the setting, but I'm super happy they decided to revisit and polish the concept with skies

    This is a great video on a great game, but with how much you seem to give attention to it, I want to point out that unlike in Seas, the headlights of your Locomotive do not consume fuel. Disabling your lights is mainly for enemy detection

      I actually did buy it yeah! Was on the lookout for other games which were similar to the Sunless series, though tbh only played it for about an hour. The writing was great from what I saw but the visuals and actual gameplay were very rough round the edges.

    It's a cool game, but really tedious, in my opinion. You're constantly running out of money, and if you want to get more of them, you need to do busywork like trading resources. Combat is fun, though.
