Can u paint orc only this valley?
Now THIS is exactly what I was looking for. The easiest way to paint the best hive fleet. Good job!
Thanks!
Good to see more xpress paints on the channel, they are easily my favourite "fast paint" product.
Thanks 😘
Yeh, my son has decided this is how I should paint his Leviathan nids. Can't wait to start 🥴
YOU CAN DO IT!
I was waiting for Xpress Colors tutorial for some time. I know that they are quite the same as Contrast but it is always nice to see "tools" from different manufacturers being used as well.
More will come with time but I don't want to change the core of what the channel is
Always great to try as many products as you can (without breaking the bank). Each artist can find a comfort level with different paints from different makers.
love this color scheme!
Always love to watch your tutorials 🫶
Thanks mate
You sir, are a legend.
You made this so simple and fast. Great for getting a whole army table ready fast. Then we just need to go back for some highlighting to really make things pop.
I always find the end results you get with just Contrast/Xpress absolutely amazing. Lovely work as always, Juan
Thanks
Thank you so much! I was looking for an xpress/contrast version of this scheme!
Happy to help
Such a great color scheme.
Thanks
Awesome look!
Thanks
Love seeing vallejo paints used!
Glad you liked it
by far the best hive painting i've seen here! nice job!
Thanks
Juan, you make it look so easy!
I know! I'm an asshole
PERFECT! Looks great, master. You do this things so beatuful, simple, enjoy and effective. Thanks a lot
Happy to help
Beautiful Work, Subscribed!
VIEWS FOR THE VIEWS GOD
SUBS FOR THE SUBS THRONE
Great tutorial!
Thanks
Thanks for acknowledging Heather.
It's the only way
I was pondering how to paint my Nids and now I know. Fantastic expo on how to navigate the biological look but also quick and easy. Great paint scheme and the Peachy manoeuvre!! Top job as always.
Gotta love the Peachy maneuver
Truly impressive!
Thanks
Awesome to see how much you can do with Xpress Colours, thanks!!
Happy to help
Thanks for the tutorial Juan. It’s very interesting on how all the fast painting products from various companies are all rather different.
You take all the confusion out of it to develop a fast and effective technique which gives a good ‘paint by numbers’ to follow as well as informing us on the characteristics of each paint.
Thanks
Juan,
Again, thank you for sharing this scheme with me. Seeing as I have now bought the Levizathan box I have been looking for the scheme that I want to paint my nids in. This looks wonderful. I also want to try this paint range.
Awesome! Sounds like a cool project
Fantastic tutorial. Your explanation and demonstration of feathering were perfect; as a newer painter, this was a new technique for me and I used it for a Hive Fleet Cetu Termagant and it turned out fantastic following your method!
It's one of the most powerful techniques you can master with Contrast type paints
Haha thanks very much for the shout out ❤
Credit where credit is due
Where did he find your recipe?
I asked her gently
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures
Another fantastic video dude
Thanks
I have ben looking for a nice paint scheme for the new tyranids for a while now and this looks so good and all done without highlighting ,,,, i cant wait to get started ,, let the batch painting begin :)
YEAH
It was eyes opening to understand that I can use greyscale cores/contrast to get the under-shading for another colour. Thank you, sir!
Happy to help
Awesome, love your xpress paints videos. Not having Tyranids, but will use some colours in a way you used on other miniatures.
Glad you liked it
This looks great man, good job. Great timing too. I decided to punish myself and go for this scheme for the 'nid half of my Leviathan box and couldn't find a useful tutorial online for it... at least not one that didn't have a ridiculous amount of work per model!
As I say in the video this was about 2 hours and if you batch them, that would drop SIGNIFICANTLY
Lovely work. Need to pick up more Xpress paints when I run out of Contrast.
Do it, they are awesome
Your the first I've seen doing a gradient using a brush instead of an airbrush. Gotta try this on the next model i put together.
Happy to help!
That looks great! Been looking for something like this. I wonder how clean and fast a noob like me could paint it, tempted to give it a try.
Try it, it's a very fun process
Maravilloso!
Gracias guapo
Great job man! You should do videos like this for the other hive fleets.
Maybe in the future
Love it: “if you’re feeling spicy” 😂❤
That's for my Onlyjuans
I like the general idea of this color scheme because I feel like it does a good job mimicking natural color of lobster but I would probably not fade into pure white. I've spent a knot insignificant amount of time in my life thinking about how to get exactly what I want on a tier and model but so far no luck
Only you can come up with what's in your mind. Sometimes modifying an existing scheme is the best way to go
And I say it again and again and again. This man is the god emperah of contrast paints.
Thanks 😘
Great vid, I already feel mad choosing the scheme 😂
Lol
Thanks for getting back to me!
I had another question, I saw the great result you achieved Slapchopping the Guardsman.
Do you think that method could work with this feathering method? If so what colours do you think would Slap well?
Views for the views god! Ha quedado chulo el tiránido 👏👏
Gracias guapo
Thanks for video Juan, I really hope you would do more these simple tutorials like this or the guardsman in the future! Just recently bought all the xpress paints and waiting for their arrival 😍. Also thanks for hosting the competition, would love to enter but im too afraid, would have probably entered with an model 3d print as a gift for someone.. I do hope she likes it tho ☺.
Don't be afraid! There's time yet.
Thanks
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Im sorry I painted it allready, and did not tag my name in any of my photos 🙈
This looks awesome and efficient! I wonder - does the initial grey step have much effect on the carapace? Just wondering if can save time by only using it on the body.
Probably none at all, but I feel like it makes very little difference in terms of time, your mileage may vary
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures makes sense!
Looks great going to try it for sure. Anyone tried this technique on larger scale models. I know contrast paints can be a bit patchy over larger flatter surfaces. Hoping that's not the case with this.
Tyranids are amazing for this, even the jarge ones come out great
Beautiful job, Juan! Anything you can share on the progress of the new Xpress colors you've hinted at a few times?
Nothing I can actually say
I was toying with the idea of selling my Tyranid half of Leviathan. This has inspired me to keep out and paint my first non-Astartes army. 👊🏼
YEAH
Amazing tutorial thank you! I wanted to ask if I wanted to highlight the carapace edges, could you do it with drybrush using this technique? If you can, would you drybrush the base first and contrast over or at the end over the contrast?
Mmmm good question, i think I would do it at the end in this case to maximise the effect
Awesome video! Any advice for highlight colors over top of the Xpress Colors?
You can always mix an off white with the Xpress and highlight using that
Great work and video. I love Xpress Color paints, especially how they dry slower (allowing for more working time) than contrast and speedpaints. Any idea yet if more colors will be available later this year?
Oh yeah, the range will be expanded to 60 VERY soon
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Excellent!
I love this tutorial! If you were to scale the scheme up to say a Neurolictor, how would you paint the face tentacles?
I would probably do them a fleshy colour
What are the the paints used but with citadel contrast. Fantastic looking miniature I really love this colour scheme
Superb tutorial, I am currently painting my nids with it and it's awesome!
Is the carapace really a 1:1 mix? Maybe it's the camera, but with that mix I keep getting a blueish hue, while yours seems to be darker.
Mine is Blue AF too.
The bases are amazing as well, would you mind sharing how you did it?
Watch my desert dunes video
Brother you are awesome with a brush!!! I have a request, could you do a video on how you achieve the OSL on Jump Pack exhaust...I saw a glimps of this on your Dante video
Like this

Amazing! Any more Tyranid tutorials in the future?
Probably
Thank you , Juan .
🐺 Loupis Canis .
Thanks for watching mate
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures My pleasure , Your hard work , Thank you .
Your videos have helped me a lot, thank you very much for them, I have a question, what tones would you recommend for the wings of this scheme?
I would do a pinkish fleshtone
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures ok muchisimas gracias!!!
@pablomartinez8424 ojalá pudiese
This color scheme is 100x better than most tyranid schemes
Thanks
Gracias guapo 😘
Hey hey. You guide is working realy great for me as a beginner! Is there any chance that you can paint a bigger model in this scheme ? Perhaps something from zhe Leviathan box ;)?
Sorry but no, I have too many things to do already.
But it's basically the same just larger
I like to believe you. Could you recommend an Xpress Color for wings and brains :)?
What would be a good comparison to storm blue in citadel. My LGS doesn’t carry that paint so was just curious. Thanks
I don't think there's any. Ultramarine Blue maybe? But it's not really close
Amazing as usual, Juan.
One question, I assume you used the Black Lotus + Storm Blue + Medium mix on the carapace @ 4:02 ?
Of course
When you feature, how are you cleaning the brush. If its licking, how would you recommend for those of who don't want to lock 😅
Clean in water very well, absorb the extra moisture in my mouth. Just use a paper towel instead
I’ve been wondering for this scheme, for winged units, what colour should I paint the wing’s membranes? The fleshy flappy bits have always been a difficult decision
I would probably just mix a kind of Fleshtone
Great video! Does anyone know a rattlecan primer with the same color as corax white, which is still available?
Colour Forge makes an equivalent
Looks great! Typhon is definitely my fav Hive Fleet scheme, but I've been on the fence about actually painting it because it also seems like the most complex.
RIP Corax White, but I'll see how this works out using Grey Seer instead.
Are you going to do any other 'nid colour schemes, or was this a one-off?
I'm sure White Scar would work as a primer if you have that available to you as well.
As I say in the video, yes both will work just fine
What would you use if you couldn’t get your hands on Corax white spray?
Colour Forge makes a Corax White spray alternative, and another option is always to do a layer of Corax White paint over a white or light grey spray.
I did mine with the airbrush over light grey
Which colors do you recommend for green carapace on the nids?
Whatever green you prefer, I tend towards dark carapaces myself
That looks amazing for only using Xpress paints, excellent stuff. How would you tackle models with more 'skin' type areas with this scheme, for example the new Winged Prime?
I think I would go for a mix of a skintone with a pink, something like Cardinal Purple mixed with a lot of Dwarf Skin. That can look cool
@@JuanHidalgoMiniaturesGreat thank you! I will definitely have to pick up some paints from this range and have a play around.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniaturespicked up all the paints from the video, feathering is a lot harder than you make it look 😅
I know, it's intentional you see, because I'm an asshole
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatureshaha creased
So essentially what you are doing is pre-shade with thinned down black lotus and then tinting the surfaces with the desired colour. Interesting. Sort of like slap chop without drybrushing. Thoughts on using a black wash instead of black lotus?
Essentially yes.
Black wash is not intense enough for one also not the same properties as Xpress. The hue is not the same also, loosing a lot of the blue undertones the scheme needs
You say you clean your brush for the second part of feathering: does that mean the brush is dry, or that it's wet with water, or that it's wet with medium?
I clean the brush in the water cup, I remove the extra water. The brush is moist, not wet
Could you do the same with hive fleet Tiamet?
Maybe in the future
Hello juan
😘
Which colours or pigments did you used for the ochre base?
No pigments, just my desert base tutorial
This might seem obvious to others but... other than the the colours having different names, I should be able to reproduce this in Contrast or Speedpaint as well? I think they're the same type of product.
I'm an absolute madman and decided to use Typhon for my very first army... eek
You can but none of the ratios here will work, have that in mind
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures That's what I was thinking too... though, because the video has very good detail I should be able to get an idea on the ratios I need pretty quickly, and just "do the math" after that.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Well... sad to report I lack the skill to match the Vallejo paints using speedpaints. I have the colours right, but the consistency is WAY off. these are coating like a light layer instead of giving any gradients.
I gave myself three minis to test on though... so I won't give up right away. I did notice that the more wash-like steps near the end worked better, maybe I just need extra water for speedpaints.
I think I'm also going too fast... I spent about an hour following this, and I have a feeling this paintjob took you at least 2
This might be a gamble, but would you happen to know what citadel alternatives I could use as I have limited access to paints
Sadly I don't, sorry
BAD Juan, you could've done the contrast alternatives for us (I cant even find a conversion chart fml)
And where do we find heathers original recipe
You will have to ask Heather for that.
As for the alternatives, the issue is even if the hue is similar the intensities are so different that the recipe would be useless anyway
When you "feather" are you using water or dipping the brush into medium?
No medium, it's a waste of money
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures I meant the speed paint medium that you used in the mixes, but I’m guessing that’s still no.
No, no medium at all for feathering, it's slower, worse and more expensive
What does the xpress medium do? What is the difference if you put water?
Thin down the pigment while maintaining the properties. While water doesn't affect Xpress as it does Contrast, you will alter the properties of the paint by thinning it with water, sometimes that's what you want, sometimes like this one, it isn't
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures thank you 🙏
Why using xpress /contrast medium instead of simple water ? Doesnt it has the same result or i missing smthg ?
No, it totally doesn't get the same result at all. Water turns Xpress into a wash, and very light in texture, you want the body and properties of the chemistry while thinning the pigment down
Que pinturas usaste en la base!? :0
Está todo en mi video
How to Base - Desert Dunes
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures gracias x responder!
sorry. what primer did you use now :) ?
Just white if I'm not mistaken
OK thanks. Item going to start with Warhammer and what to use your technique 😊
Always termies though. Not one does anything bigger to see how it translates
Making videos takes a long time and CZcams pace is unforgiving. Painting a small model is fast and efficient and I can record a video in a single session and edit it in time for the week upload
I thought I was the first in the world who tries to paint tyranids with these paints. anyway, I got ahead of you.
That's awesome!
It looks very nice, but i'd be burned out after 10 models.
Understandable, Typhon is not for you. It's a colour scheme choice you make knowing what you get yourself into
: )
😘
