The absolute beauty of this film is this:
    No CGI.
    No ultra violence.
    No blood and gore.
It is a perfectly crafted and exquisitely executed, pure psychological thriller.
It works your mind. It keeps you guessing, on the edge of your mental seat, holding your breath.
Then it delivers a plot twist which, in my humble opinion, is unequivocally the best one ever made.
This film is quite a masterpiece.

    I love this movie - it’s so clever in the way its shot from the perspective of the ghost. Some really cool things to pick up the second time watching, after you know the twist;
    1. The mother suffers migraines because she shot herself in the head. The scene where she is loading the gun (and you commented how cool our Aussie Nicole is) she paused because she was having a memory of loading the gun before she liked herself.
    2. Anne’s hyperventilated breathing is because she was smothered with a pillow. Even the part where the mother says “stop breathing.”
    3. The scene where you said “you could wait until she is awake..” I believe Anne was actually dead and the mother was having a memory of apologising after she killed her children
    4. A give away that the servants are dead also, is that they’re not wearing clothes of the era. The movie was set in the 1940’s, but their clothes are from around the late 1800’s
    5. The father reacts so strangely, because he knows he is dead from the war - he doesn’t know that his wife shot herself and killed her children while he was away, so he is shocked that he is able to communicate with them/that they’re dead.
    6. The fog/haze throughout the movie clears when they realise they’re ghosts

You should have let it play out. It's totally possible to think earlier that the family is dead - especially with the family and the servants having the same number of people, so the gravestones can be for either group - but I've never seen anyone guess that both groups are dead. They think it has to be one group or the other, and so when the reveal of the servants being dead comes, they assume the family's alive and then are genuinely shocked when it's revealed they're dead too! (You can see an example of this if you watch Ash and Hannah's reaction. He guesses it and she agrees with him, then they get fooled!)

Those people in the photos weren't sleeping - they were dead. There was a brief fad in the 1800s of people taking photos of their recently deceased relatives, dressed up and often sitting or lying. An odd method of remembrance but it was a thing for awhile. Hell, some even had them embalmed and displayed. There is still at least one girl in existence, from the period, who had that done. In Italy IIRC.

Back then hiring someone to come take a picture, develop it and such cost a pretty penny.
And people probably didn't think to much of taking pictures of their loved ones when they could just, go see them. Nor could they really afford it. Lower-middle class of course.
So this was to have a picture of them to always remember how they looked before being put in the ground, where you could never see them again.
At least I think that's what I read some time ago.
But getting pictures of someone because cheap and cheaper is time went by. And people could afford to take family pictures together every so often and I believe that is when the dead photo fad faded out.
I think its kinda nice, in a creepy way. At least those left behind had something to look at to remember them.

I lived in a haunted rooming house once almost 15 years ago. I relocated to this city I'm not going to name but I moved there to get set up so my family could join me later. So, it was this house where a guy was unalived by two other renters in that house. They broke into his room one night and b*at him to d*ath with a baseball bat. Apparently, this guy was rather a nice and generous guy and would often lend those other two guys smokes and a little bit of money once in a while. Well, one time, he had gotten tired of their constant begging and finally had had enough. He said he wasn't gonna lend them anything anymore and that was it. That night, they did the deed on him.
Now, I wasn't told about any of this by the landlord or anyone and when I moved in, I was the only one living there. I'd been there a month before anyone else moved in and they were the ones that told me what happened. So, this guy was a bl**dy mess after those two other guys b*at him. They said this guy dragged himself down the hallway, then down the stairs and he d*ed at the bottom of the stairs. They said there was a huge trail of bl**d from his room on the floor and the wall of the hallway and the stairwell. They said management had ripped up the carpeting on the stairs and repainted the walls in a weak attempt to hide it from new renters like my dumba$$. When I moved in, I noticed the new paint and I could see the remnants of the carpeting on the stairwell. Of course, I didn't think anything too untoward about it. I just thought, what a sh*tty clean up job. Some of the carpeting was still visible but there was no bl**d marks so I didn't suspect anything.
So, one night, I was laying in my bed and I JUST about to fall asleep and then, all of a sudden, there was this guy standing in my room. I was renting the room that he used to live in but I didn't know that in that moment. And that night, he was standing there in my room, looking down at my guitar. It felt like a dream. Sometimes, in my dreams, it feels like I can't move and that's just cause my physical body is laying in bed, asleep. Anyway, I felt like I was being intruded upon because here was this guy standing in my room, looking at my guitar. I remember him saying, "Nice guitar". Nobody does this to me for free. You cross me and something's gonna happen to you so I forced myself to get up. It felt like moving in quicksand and once I was sitting up in bed, I jumped up and grabbed my guitar and sat back down. Once I was sitting back down, that guy was gone. So there I was sitting in my room alone, holding my guitar in my lap thinking someone was trying to steal it. And the lights were out. I was like, "What the h3ll?" I was thinking, "Was that a dream?"
So, a month later, someone else finally moved in, too and that's when they told me what happened in that house. I told them about that night. We just laughed,...nervously, of course.
So, a couple weeks go by. This ghost was harassing the new tenant because HE moved into a room one of his m*rderers rented. The new tenant would complain about loud bangs on his door almost daily. I'd often hear him slam his door open and shout, "You're d*ad! You don't live here, anymore! Go to the other side!" Then, one night, I was alone in the house. I was watching The Dark Knight on blueray. This was 2009 so that movie was still relatively new. Then, I could hear foot steps sliding across the floor in my room. The living room where I was watching the movie is directly under my bedroom so I could hear the steps right above me. I paused the movie and listened. Then, I could hear my dresser drawers being opened and closed one at a time, pretty slowly. It was creepy. I got up and went to the bottom of the stairs. So, the stairs led to the beginning of the hallway at the back of the house. There was a bathroom right at the top of the steps. Then, there were the rooms all on one side of the house. MY room was at the front of the house, above the living room as I said. So, my window had a view of the street. Just to give you an idea of the layout. Anyway, this guy opened every drawer in my dresser. Then, I could hear his footsteps move toward the bedroom door and they were getting louder. I knew he was gonna come down the hallway and I was thinking, "Holy sh*t. He's coming downstairs." I freaked out, man lol. I ran back to the couch and just sat there, frozen, staring at the bottom of the stairs. From my spot on the couch, that's all I could see was the bottom of the stairs like the last two or three steps. THEN, there was this haze that came out of nowhere. It looked like static on a t.v. but I could still hear that guy moving toward the beginning of the hallway like you would if you were gonna come downstairs but he didn't. Instead, the footsteps went silent and haze that appeared just vanished. You know what happened? He went to Heaven. I didn't actually see it with my own eyes but I was there, man. I semi-witnessed a soul crossing over to the other side. That's something I will never forget. Good for him. I'm glad he made it but that was freaky has h3ll.
Oh, and by the way, wanna know why he was opening and closing my dresser drawers? He was doing that because he was finally realizing that he was d*ad and someone else was renting that room. HIS clothes were no longer in those drawers and I think that's what finally made him realize he had to move on.
Anyway, great reaction. This movie is one of the most underrated horror movies ever.

11:03 - I laughed when you asked, "Why take pictures of people that are sleeping?" Yeah, that's not sleep - that's death! People used to take lifelike pictures of their dead loved-ones to remember them by. It is a pretty morbid practice but pictures weren't as ubiquitous as they are today, so family photos were quite limited.

Yes, I know it is not possible to know every thing ever, but many people believe that they just know it is not real, and I won't lie, that does get to me, because there is no way we can know every condition ever. Unless maybe you have an eidetic memory and you memorized all of them? So, I don't expect people to just know what it is, of course, but I've seen several where people just flat out say that can't be real. I'm guessing it's because it's a movie? They just think maybe it was made up for the film. Maybe that is part of it? Also, I have a (less severe) version of Photosensitivity, so I won't lie, while I love watching reactions to this movie, it does grate just a little bit to over and over hear people think and sometimes just say it can't be real. But the reactions are always fun, nonetheless. Thanks for commenting this, though. 👍

    Bravo! Excellent choice!
    - Grace's scream right at the beginning is not an ordinary nightmare. It's the realisation of what she has done to her children and herself.
    - Nicole Kidman wanted to quit during rehearsals, as playing Grace gave her nightmares. "At one point I didn't want to make the film because I couldn't even go there emotionally."
    - When the wandering Charles arrives home escorted by Grace, he meets Mrs. Mills, later revealed to be another person among the dead. When he approaches Grace in the fog and as he enters the room to greet his children, Charles' footsteps produce a sound not unlike the clanking of chains - which Anne had previously mentioned is a tell-tale trait of ghosts.
    - In the scene where Grace is loading the shotgun for the first time, she can be seen pausing in a recollective moment after she slams the breach shut. This is most likely due to her faint realization of deja vu, most likely alluding to her suicide by using the same gun

I remember watching this movie when it first came out. I was living alone then. Lying on my couch. The scene with the piano and when the door slammed shut I STOOD on the couch.
After watching it to the end I turned every light on in every room! This movie had a huge impact on me. A masterpiece.

Kidman wasn't nominated for an Oscar for this film. This was the same year she did Moulin Rogue, and she was nominated for that film - which got a ton of Oscar nominations. Although many critics said that she had been nominated for the wrong film that year, as her work in this film was much better.

    Since you asked for recommendations...
    The Menu.
Not entirely a horror film but very unsettling and also some funny moments in there. This features Anya Taylor Joy from the VVITCH and Ralph Fiennes who you may know as Voldemort from the Harry Potter franchise!!
    Suspiria.
An unsettling, yet BEAUTIFUL and VIBRANT set design. The theme song was my fav part of this movie. Suspiria features Jessica Harper.
    X.
A very wtf worthy movie. And also features some parts that'll make u say "AVERT YOUR GAZE" A LOT. Plus there are also fxcked up scenes in this movie. This features Mia Goth, Brittany Snow (who you may know from Pitch Perfect), Kid Cudi and Jenna Ortega who you may know as Wednesday.
    Happy Death Day.
After watching your Final Destination reaction, if you want a REAL groundhog day horror movie, this is what you're looking for. It's also a horror comedy! Lots of funny moments. This stars Jessica Rothe who was fxcking ENTERTAINING in this movie lol.
OH BOY... Was this a long comment.

This movie holds up so well, it's crazy. I recommend you check out The Silenced (2015 Southern Asian film), The Skeleton Key (2005 film), and The Crow (1994 film).

Like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football, I'll recommend it once again to you, Lucy... If you liked THIS movie, you'll LOVE The Changeling, 1980!
    Best to you, Kat! ❤

Hell yeah, this movie is awesome! I'm not the only one whose initial thought was that the kids were vampires, right?

The clothing and hair of the characters are from different eras ,but the movie draws you in and you don't notice it.
