    As a formerly avid hiker from Appalachia, can confirm this happens. Had an albino cave ghoul steal the catalytic converter off my dad's truck one time, had to chase it off with a shovel. Also, probably my favorite experience seeing a movie in theaters was from this movie. At the first reveal of the monsters, everyone in the audience was audibly startled, but that's also when I found out some parent-of-the-year candidate had brought their toddler with them to this this. The very second that thing appeared on screen the kid just started sobbing uncontrollably. I probably missed the next 3-4 minutes of the movie due to the tears in my eyes from trying to stifle my laughter. Another great movie by this same director is Dog Soldiers. It's about werewolves!

    • @neilbiggs1353
      @neilbiggs1353 Před rokem +19

      Did you notice that the roads in Appalachia have UK markings? It was filmed about 30 minutes outside London if I recall, and one of the few technical gaffs in the film is that the road markings at the end weren't either painted over, or digitally corrected in post, so you get the UK broken lines rather than the double continuous lines of the US (IIRC)
      As for that parent, what a ^&*&%$! What would make them think that taking a kid to a horror film was a good idea?

    • @avtomatt554
      @avtomatt554 Před rokem +24

      @@neilbiggs1353 I'll be damned, I've seen this movie a handful of times but I never caught that, good eye. I guess a big tell-tale sign it wasn't Appalachia (and especially not WV) is that they weren't swerving every 30 feet to avoid potholes the size of impact craters and that the gravel road wasn't half washed-out. As for the parent thing, your guess is as good as mine. I can't imagine. The first movie my parents ever took me to was Ghostbusters II when I was about 4, and I had to look away anytime Vigo was on the screen. I absolutely could not fathom having seen this at that age.

    • @neilbiggs1353
      @neilbiggs1353 Před rokem +3

      @@avtomatt554 I think it might have been the director's commentary that talked about the road markings, and it's only in that one scene at the end with the truck going past, so it is easy to miss - I still don't think I'd have noticed as those markings are normal to me, it wouldn't occur to me that they aren't the US style ones until someone said it. I enjoy Neil Marshall's commentary tracks as he comes across as pretty down to earth. He directed the Battle Of The Blackwater in Game Of Thrones and he was gleeful about a happy accident when he had a pool of blood flowing towards the water! I hope he gets another shot at a blockbuster, his Hellboy movie wasn't good, but I feel like he still deserves a chance to show what he can do with a big budget. That said, I won't be disappointed if he keeps working on low budget films and TV as he clearly has a gift for getting a lot done with not much.
      As for the kid? There are times when it seems like parents are either oblivious or selfish. In this case, I'd say that the person thought they could watch it and the kid would amuse themselves rather than look at the screen, so they didn't need to get a sitter. I'd have been furious if that had been at a screening I was in (or maybe not as this is not a dialogue heavy movie). I know in the UK cinemas used to be very careful about who could watch a film, you couldn't bring kids in with you if the film wasn't rated PG or below, but now we have multiplexes, you often don't get that same kind of care and attention from the staff. Is (or was) it the case in the US that parents could bring kids in to any screening? I could see it being either way to be honest. You've got the personal choice and freedom argument, but at the same time, the US is pretty restrictive on ratings for certain types of content

    I don't know if anyone's mentioned it, but this is the "edited for Americans" version, where they chopped off the last thirty seconds. After the jump scare in the truck, Sarah wakes up and is still in the cave, thinking she sees her daughter holding a birthday cake, which is just the flickering light of the torch lying in front of her. The camera pulls back and she's on a ledge in the middle of nowhere, and the sounds of the creatures are growing louder. Apparently the US distributors thought that was too depressing and cut it.

    Not sure if you caught it, but another reason she hurt Juno other than leaving Beth to die was because she realized she was having an affair with her husband (Beth says the necklace is ‘from Paul’ before Sarah smashes her head in) hence the weird looks in the beginning, his distracted driving, the necklace that said ‘love each day’, which Sarah said was something Paul used to say a lot.

      Paul also gave exactly the same necklace to Sarah as a very intimate gift, signalling that Juno and Paul's relationship was apparently very serious and probably quite long-standing, possibly throughout the birth of Sarah's daughter. That really puts Juno well into unforgivable territory; continuing to pursue your best friend's husband while the two of them are conceiving and raising a small child, and never coming clean about it, even after the collision? Wow.
      The duplicate necklaces was also a pretty low move on Paul's part, so Sarah may have dodged a bit of a bullet in the midst of the crap tornado that destroyed her life, but Paul's quality isn't the main subject, so I'll let it lie.

    The way the director originally wanted the film to end, as it does in the UK version, was with Sarah still hopelessly trapped in the cave, her escape being a delusion. After test screenings however it was deemed too bleak for US audiences and it was cut. For me this is definitely one of the scariest films ever. Technically the bleaker original ending wasn't 'cut', it was simply replaced for western audiences. Both versions of the ending still exist and are watchable. This ending I guess is 'officially' cannon, simply because of The Descent 2, but if you don't care about that movie, the original is still perfectly viable. They each have their pluses and minuses. This will probably be the cheapest movie you will watch for your channel, it was made for £3.5m! The caves and tunnels are all made from polystyrene blocks, rearranged and shot differently so you can't tell. Something I love is all the different ways they have of illuminating the scenes - torches, fire, flares, the night vision camera, glow-sticks, it keeps everything fresh but also makes sense with the situation in the story. The use of colour overall is brilliant, that shot of the blue eyes surrounded by blood is just fantastic. Neil Marshall directed some huge episodes of Game Of Thrones and you have to think his ability to maximise a budget played in to that.
    Not sure how you've watched this, but the cast and director commentary was a lot of fun on the DVD, it had an anecdote where the Irish girl who broke her leg (Nora Jane Noone) had a prop head of her made for the film, and she had it in the fridge when her mum visited... It sounded like they had great chemistry off camera and it translated to how well it came across on screen. It's really economical how it builds up their backstory, but for me it really works. In terms of bringing stuff on screen, the cast didn't get to see the 'crawlers' until the scene itself to make the fear more organic!
    Also on the economy side, possibly a negative with how some people miss it is the infidelity subplot between Juno and Sarah's husband. You only get very oblique mentions of it like Juno's necklace engraved with what he said to Sarah (Love Each Day). It's way Sarah lets the necklace hang so Juno can see it before stabbing her leg and leaving her to die - it was making sure she knew why, not just for the friend who was stabbed in the neck, but for the betrayal with the husband.
    If you want to see another British low budget but very well made horror, 28 Days Later might be right up your street!

    Saw a documentary years ago about spelunking. The reached a point where the section they were crawling through was so narrow the only way to get through it was to breath all the air out of their lungs, and then squeeze through. Making sure to not move to slow, and to not panic and get stuck, because then you’d die. also? If that happened, people would be stuck on their side if they couldn’t get your body unwedged. And I wanted to scream at the tv “Why would you ever do this?!! This is not fun!!”

    I do enjoy your reaction to this movie and I never went cave diving. But you need to have a flame to find where the air is coming from to find a way out. Rambo taught me that lol. Plus, in cave diving though you have to make sure you do not run out of air so I do not know why they would use a flame to find out which way the air is flowing. For flames on a candle to a lighter eats oxygen and without oxygen you die.

    You do realise that as well as putting them in this horrific situation and killing one of their friends, Juno had been sleeping with Sarah's husband? That's why they shared that look at the beginning and why Sarah said in the car that he was distant.
    Also, the locket (or bracelet) was engraved with something that HE used to say.
    One more reason why Sarah left Juno to die.
    I'd like to suggest A Cabin In The Woods.

    You thought this ending was crazy? This was the ending in the US version because test screenings showed that American audiences found the original ending to be too depressing. In the original UK ending, Sarah sees Juno in the car and then wakes up to reveal that the whole escape was a dream and that she's still in the cave. She then has another hallucination of her daughter as the camera pans out showing that she is nowhere near any kind of an exit and we hear crawlers closing in on her.

    Reading the comments, I think a lot of people are missing the fact that there was no way both Juno and Sarah were getting out. You saw how fast the wave of creatures descended on Juno, and how carefully they were guarding the exit. These creatures had successfully hunted parties of humans before; they knew what they were about. Had they not been distracted, the predators would have run both women down as they made an inevitable racket climbing the bone-pile. Sarah knew this, knew Juno's call would be exactly the same one it always was (as it was with Paul, and Beth, and all of them in selfishly tricking them into that cave in the first place, etc), and decided that she was not about to let Juno's narcissism kill her twice (or, arguably, thrice).
    And, sure, killing Beth was unintentional. But leaving her to be eaten alive alone in the dark wasn't.

    I will not deny how terrifying I found this film when I first watched it. Especially because many creatures quite similar have been captured on video all over the world. They are called Rakes or Wendigos. Careful in the woods, mountains and the plains folks. They like to mimic sounds of babies, adults and animals, usually in some pain or yelling for help. Run if you hear it. Run like the dickens. They look quite similar. I get your attempts at tensing your fear into seizure like holds. It’s like “hey hand. Hey arms. Take this FEAR so my heart can keep pumping.”
