    Stuff we use:
    CAMERA - This is the camera we have used to film 90+% of our interviews (over 200 interviews and counting) It continues to be our workhorse - amzn.to/2u66V1J
    LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
    AUDIO
    Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
    Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
    LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
    COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
    EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

    Very inspiring. I assumed that when he stated he shot a feature in 3 days that it would look crappy but I just watched the trailer for Pocketman and Cargoboy and was very impressed. I'm going to watch it this weekend on Amazon with the kids.

    This is massive. This past Saturday I began shooting for my short film, and an actor pulled out...day of. The short film was planned for a 2 day shoot. However the script is 40 pages. Enough detail, that shouldn’t be shot in 2 days. It made me pull back and change a lot of things about my production that I am really excited to strip it down, and start fresh. His words are exactly what I was aiming for, but realized I need to take my time. Every artist is different!

    Very informative. Yes, sometimes you don't get a location back, so best to finish all the scenes there, no matter what. Congratulations on its completion.

    Great interview. I just wish he expanded on how he actually shot in 3 days. That just seems insane - I need 2 days to shoot a 10 page short. I feel like if I went super minimal, I can maybe shoot that 10 pages in a day.

      Polan, I have worked directly with Clay and essentially what allows him to shoot in 3 days is having his actors know their lines well, getting simple shots and very basic lighting set up, and knocking out a performance in one or two takes, then moving on. Another way he saves a lot of time is by having only 1 or 2 locations (for example, PMCB 2 was mostly filmed at a VERY large AirBnB house rented for a few days) that can look like more if needed. He has a small crew which works fast and they don't try and be perfectionist but stick to the schedule. No fancy shots. There is also no makeup (actors that need it put on their own makeup prior to showing up) which speeds things up considerably.
      I hope that helps.

      I had 5 days to shoot my last movie with a budget of R$1,000 (about 176 Dollars)
      The script had 16 pages but was kinda complex with some stuff like the protagonist was a kid, he walk around the city a lot (and here in Brazil the sun dont play around, there are always people in the streets, and the list goes on and on ) so i think if the story is contained, not too much external scenes, characters, you can menage to make it in a few days.
      I know im going to try this next year, i have written 6 screenplays and 3 outlines that i want to shoot. The ideia is one short film for every month, all contained storys except for 2 of them until now.

    Keep in mind that guy is clearly a hobbyist. Every piece of advice he gives should be taken with a huge grain of salt and some of it just outright ignored. For example his advice regarding how many takes of a scene should be done should be completely disregarded.

    • @h.ar.2937
      @h.ar.2937 Před 4 lety +1

      Yes you're right. And when he says that they make mistakes they just keep going. Obviously this guy does not have the time to constantly do re-shoots because of his tight schedule, but what this guy's motto is "Just do it"

    • @h.ar.2937
      @h.ar.2937 Před 4 lety +2

      To add to that I think Film Courage knows that this guy is a hobbyist but they just want to tell their viewers "Y'all got no excuse"

    • @MLFILMSTV
      @MLFILMSTV Před 2 lety +1

      why should it be disregarded? If you see the perfect whilst working with loads of time restrictions, what's the need to shoot the same scene again?

    • @ddei989
      @ddei989 Před 2 lety

      @@MLFILMSTV because rarely if ever is the first take perfect. Giving your actors a couple more takes can help them with the scene and having options for your editor is better than giving them nothing. It's the difference between a good film and a bad film that is unwatchable and unremarkable.
      If you're only goal is to pad out your resume to trick others into thinking you're a legitimate film maker then go for it I guess. But I'd like to make something that's decent and I can be proud of. And speaking as someone who has worked with time restrictions there is always time for another take or two. If you don't have the time then you shouldn't be on set in the first place. Go back to drawing board to better prepare and stop wasting other people's time.

      If you wrote the script and will edit and are director, I can see how you could get away with limited takes. Because you know what shots you will use whenever you shoot the scene.

    TL:DR
    “When I was a kid I started fucking around with a camera and I didn’t get better, just older. Also I don’t know what quality is or why it’s important.”
    I like his spirit, but I don’t take him seriously at all as a filmmaker.

    If you want to see a great documentary on making a movie in three days, check out "Popatopolis", a 2009 doc about director Jim Wynorski and the making of "The Witches of Breastwick". It's brilliant. (...the doc, not the movie they made.)

    I was going to say something like "I would discourage the film courage team to let people like him get exposure on such a great channel because he is definitely not at the level of skill to be giving advice" but actually, I realised we could all just use this interview as a short guide of everything you should NOT do if you want to make good quality, professional features. Viewed like the latter option makes it great tbqh.
