My daughter has a teacher like Mr. Hand in high school 2023. Things havent changed that much. They carry chromebooks in place of paper text books & r expected to successfully utilize technology such as e-mail & search engines online. As well, they r required to earn more credits in order to obtain the same diploma we earned with less back in the 80’s. All while still taking tests with multiple choice & essay questions, homework, & social pitfalls that go beyond our in person bullying & into online culture that can b extremely difficult to navigate. We had it good. Even with a chromebook replacing regular books for somethings, their back packs r still heavier, full of notebooks & papers, supplies, just as we had plus more……

Let's be honest. If a teacher told you to go and fetch a student who you knew was skipping, you wouldn't go get him and come right back to class. You'd walk around the whole school, come back with 5 minutes left and say you couldn't find him.

Josey Bojangles He's a stoner which slowed him down. Didn't cut class on purpose. Besides, class just started. (Doesn't make sense class starting then ending 2 minutes later...unless Mr. Hand gave back the tests at the end of class and didn't notice Spicoli absent until the very end.)

My 13 year old said "I don't know" a few weeks ago. I wrote it on a little white board, told it was for all to see, and that I found be giving her full credit. She looked at me very oddly. But, then again, she does that a lot...

Gah, as someone who had a teacher as articulate and cutting as Mr. Hand, I cringe watching this. She cut our entire class down after we turned in English essays that were not up to her standard (former university professor, now teaching high school). This was an AP English class, we were all products of years of Talented and Gifted programs (or whatever they were called), and fragile snowflakes who'd received nothing but praise. A contingent of students trotted down to the principle after class to complain about her inability to teach and her harsh grading. The next class period, she apologized with the kind of sharp, dry sarcasm that left us all like Spicoli's "alright" at the end. Took a couple days to realize we'd been burned.

Mr. Hand is frustrated by Spicoli. However, it is evident that he likes the kid. As for Spicoli, he doesn't have a mean bone in his body. Just a kid who wants to be good to everyone. That's what's great about Spicoli.

It's amazing that Spicoli seriously believed that Mr. Hand was paying him a compliment when he told him that he would leave "I don't know" up on the board for all to see and Spicoli would get "full credit" for it! Hilarious!

I actually wish I'd had Mr. Hand for US History in high school. I always liked history, and he really cared about his subject, and wanted his students to care too. While I think Spicoli is hilarious, he would've annoyed me in that class, wasting everyone's time...
