It had it's moments...but, no. The '80s were in many ways the antithesis of this movie, whose spirit belonged to the freewheeling 70s. Shortly after the release of this movie, in fact during the release of this movie as I remember, the dubious reality of the 1980s kicked in; Ronald and Nancy, Reaganomics, sanctimonious PSAs, neo Cons (that bother us still), obnoxious, self-serving Yuppies, GenXers listening to aging rockers, over the top punk-influenced pop, houses that were 3/4s garage, and worst of all, AIDs! The last of these itself, put quite a damper on being young in the 1980s. Also, if any incident should happen in schools and college dormitories, were some irresponsible idiot does something that endangers the well being of themselves, or others, there was nothing that new regulations couldn't solve. Don't like the quiet hours and restricted access? look to the 80's and you will find the source of your discontent.
Of my graduating class, many of my classmates who were dating (someone from my school or a nearby county school) during or shortly after this movie, are still together at our 30th reunion, with the person they went to prom with. It boggles my mind but I'm happy for them.
plastic horror? tf???? first you weirdos criticize the music and movies of our generation. NOW YOURE CRITICIZING THE WOMEN? this is why nobody likes men anymore. from margot robbie to anya taylor joy to bella hadid.. we have some of the most beautiful women ever today. snd you know damn right women from any generation would never ever want you. weird
It's a true testament to the 80s when people who weren't even alive during this era wanna hop in a time machine and go there. As a guy who spent his childhood and early teen years in the 80s, you'd love it.
This song was Jackson Browne's highest charting single of his career. When you think of all of his other hits, it's surprising. This song was created expressly for the soundtrack to Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
Who's up for a roadtrip and to leave the world behind. A few old classic tunes and the open highway. There's nothing you can't do when you listen to soul food like this!
Looking back at my teen years... never realized how significant this time would be, and not just for my generation. This movie has so much relevance. As a kid in Ohio I watched this when it came out on HBO. A couple years later I was stationed in Long Beach CA, at 17, hanging with some kids from Millikan who took a tour of my ship. Fun times.
Hey Jason; class of '79. Am now 59: 2/6/20. I miss the 1970s. Led Zep, ELO, Grand Funk Railroad, Boston, BTO. Elton John. My dad was USN stationed the Central Valley, California.
The best of the best! the music from these years is timeless and we were so blest to have had them. To me that is including a lot of Country music as well !!
Couple of years ago I saw this as a re-release in an AMC in Burbank. I saw it six times when it first came out in '82 but hadn't seen it since early 90s on VHS. tears in my eyes seeing it on big screen.
Mainstream family cars and suvs are definitely all trying to achieve the same look these days. Hard to tell one make from the next. There are some cool sports cars though and I like that muscle cars are back. That said, cars from the past were definitely more distinctive. Automakers tried to set their cars apart instead of try to conform with what everyone else was doing.
It's amazing how many people willingly choose to make themselves depressed over stuff like this video, "oh I wish I was born in the 80's, everything was so much better back then", etc. Comparison is the thief of joy
Takes me back to a simpler, better and more beautiful time in my life. "If only we knew". Still Loving all the classics! And I will continue with God's blessings.🙋 All of you "commenting" really took me back and touched me wionderfully! Keep it up? Signed, Shelly, (Old School)
Although this was 1982, it was culturally the tail end of the 1970s. The late 1980s was much different; Reaganomics, rise of ghetto culture, HIV, crack, it was a grimmer era. These were the last of the good days, the last of old America. Where we went to the arcade to meet friends, buy weed, play Gorf, and try to get laid. Then field parties where both white people and black people listened to the Stones, Zeppelin, Marvin Gaye, and Earth, Wind, and Fire. Weekends at the beach or summer trips to a beach. Less politicized cultural divisions among teenagers. Young kids played in the neighborhood unparented until dusk. It was golden.
This is one of the coolest songs that was recorded in the 1980's. One of those songs that when you hear it you turn up the volume and remember all the fun times you had when this song first came out. Incredible what one song can bring back so many memories and emotions. Would love to be a teenager again.
Every time i hear this song it takes me back to when i was a kid at the Drive In... I remember that evening like it was yesterday .... Priceless Memories
Fast Times at Ridgemont High was one of the funniest movies about teenage life that I've ever seen. I'm so glad that I grew up and in one piece the way that myself and my brothers and peers drove back then .
I will always love this movie and everything about it. The clothing styles, the music soundtrack, even the way people talked was different. It will always remind me of the 80's. I think this was the first movie I saw on a VHS player. Back then they had not been out too long and were very expensive. I always thought this tune by Jackson Browne was cool, his voice is just clean and crisp. The 80's for me was the best decade ever, glad I lived it.
Imagine just how truly special the film Fast Times at Ridgemont High is to those of us in the Class of '83. Why? Think about it. This rite of passage flick came out in the Summer of 1982 and we had just finished our high school Junior year and were clam happy about our Senior year, just around the corner. This was OUR MOVIE, ABOUT ALL OF US IN THE CLASS OF '82 AND '83. BEAUTIFUL TIME TO BE ALIVE AND A SENIOR HIGH STUDENT IN THE EARLY '80S.
Hearing this song makes me nostalgic for the pre pandemic world. Makes me miss hitting the crowded boulevards on Fridays and Saturday nights. Girls, street lights, and good times. I can't wait to get back to those kind of nights. Until then , Jackson Browne can help me reminisce.
50-ish fellow here. Thanks to all of you for writing comments. They are heartwarming to read. Some trivia some may not know about this movie: The actual school it is based on is Clairmont (sp?) High School in San Diego. A young reporter disguised himself as a student at the school for some time, then wrote the book Fast Times at Ridgemont High... After high school, the fellow Spicoli was based on tried to join the Navy but was turned down due to his marijuana use. He became a different sailor and was on the Exxon Valdes when all that oil was spilled...The character who was based on the fellow who dated Jennifer Jason Leigh's character threatened a lawsuit at one point but acquiesced when given a guitar...I thought I'd remember more than I just wrote. Take care and be well, all.
A boy next to me in 7th grade science class was reading the book back in '82. I didn't get to see the movie until about 10th grade though. I wondered why there was an actual book. I know now, thanks for sharing.
I was 21 when this movie came out and although a lot of the actors were playing the role of teenagers, I think most of them were my age. Terrific movie and a sort of “breaking from innocence” theme chronicling a lot of the struggles a lot of us experienced in high school.

Truer words were never spoken.
this is true. very very true. :D
46 years old here true !!!! Lol , love this comment!
I'm 46. I'll trade 90's and all the millenium years to have just the 80's. Just the 80's, that's how good it was.
The 80s was just cool. The years of this new millennium have something lacking. It seems very mundane compared to the 80s.
It would nice if I could go back in time back to the 80's
For me 80s-90s kinda same genre..2000s when ur like man i miss the good ol days..me born 77..so 80s - 90s were jus same...80s tho if had choose
no political correctness..good enough for me :)

This movie came out when I was like 6 ..same as MTV 🎶🎵 Remember when it was MUSIC TV???
Jennifer Jason Leigh never looked better. What a cutie!
She sure was 💞💞

All these clips and no Phoebe Cates coming out of the pool? Great movie tho and filmed in San Diego I think?
The 80's...what a great time to be a teen. Life was good. And every school had their own spicoli!
My best friend was ours lol now he is a millionaire lok
What kind of work did he go into?
A few SPICOLI'S....
My school had a few dozen.
I was late 80s, times were a little changing, but fast times was a great flick.
There were a lot of ‘80s babes but you would be hard pressed to find one better than Phoebe Cates...
Fact!
God, I loved Phoebe Cates...but I also loved Jennifer Jason Leigh in this
Mia Sara, Michelle Pfeiffer, Kelly LeBrock, Rene' Russo, Cindy Crawford.... Just to name a few who easily rivaled Phoebe Cates.
@@Aquascape_Dreaming Add Demi Moore to that list!
With all due respect to Phoebe, * my * cop-the-cup candidate for go-to goddess would have to be... * Betsy Russell * .
Such a great time in America, boy I miss it!!!!!
What a great time to be alive. The 80's was the best decade ever.
You have got that right
would do almost anything to go back!
I was 12 years old through 22 years old in the 80's. Hit it perfect!
70s too...
I also remember slow roller skating to this song with my girlfriend I was 13 she was 11 we are now married and have 5 children. She's my life.
what the fuck is your point?
Dude was just sharing a sweet story. Why be a dick?
Sooooooooo Good 2 hear a true love short story, very very few could say this & not be lieing bout something ❤💙❤
Of my graduating class, many of my classmates who were dating (someone from my school or a nearby county school) during or shortly after this movie, are still together at our 30th reunion, with the person they went to prom with. It boggles my mind but I'm happy for them.
Awe. That's rare these days. Congrats.
I think if mainstream media played more 80s music like this, this style will eventually make a comeback…and there will be world peace!
You should be President so you can make that happen Mr. President Rhapsody :)
You kidding? Main stream media hates every part of this movie except for the abortion and dope smoking.
No matter how many Oscars Sean Penn wins, he'll always remembered as Spiccoli

I so like the older songs better than the music today !!
How much more beautiful are those 80s girls with their slight flaws compared to the plastic horror show we have today?
@Joe SHANGHAI You sir hitting the nail on its head ... if "sir" is allowed in today's society of course e.g. zie, zim, ver etc.

plastic horror? tf???? first you weirdos criticize the music and movies of our generation. It's a true testament to the 80s when people who weren't even alive during this era wanna hop in a time machine and go there. As a guy who spent his childhood and early teen years in the 80s, you'd love it.
Growing up and doing high school in the Southern California 1970's, this captures it. A perfect microcosm of 70's SoCal beach cities.
What's sad is that film would never fly in our PC world we live in today.
The homophobic stuff hasn't dated well at all.
I was in high school myself when this movie came out. Early 80s. 'Twas a great time to be a teenager.
Twas? Now you're a fiftysomething nerd 😄
@@chiefscheider Or nineteenth century. One advantage- 'Tis has a past tense version 'Twas, but "it's" does not.
This song was Jackson Browne's highest charting single of his career. When you think of all of his other hits, it's surprising. This song was created expressly for the soundtrack to Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
I was a teenager in the 80's. Great decade. As fun as you see in movies. Fun music, fun times.
I was 16 and living in L.A. when this movie came out. It was an amazing time to be a teenager in the 1980’s.

Fun times.
I really miss the 80's.
Thank God I grew Up in The 80’s Best decade ever!

Jason Dixon no doubt about that. A wonderful era.
90s was great era too
Hey Jason; class of '79.
If there's a greater movie that captured high school in a particular era, I don't know what it is. So many up and comers are in this one.
Couple of years ago I saw this as a re-release in an AMC in Burbank. I saw it six times when it first came out in '82 but hadn't seen it since early 90s on VHS. tears in my eyes seeing it on big screen.
A TIME WHEN VEHICLES CAME IN DIFFERENT SHAPES.
:D.. good one.
I walk through the junk yard and I don't know what's what anymore.
Huawei is a criminal organization. The last great classic cars were made around 72 or so. They were mostly right.
Hopefully the world will recover from the corona virus & we all go back to 82 & start again 😀

Used that line many times myself & it's actually true. Being cool gets you laid. Just how it is.
It's amazing how many people willingly choose to make themselves depressed over stuff like this video, "oh I wish I was born in the 80's, everything was so much better back then", etc. Comparison is the thief of joy

Epitomizes the 80's..great music & good times. Hands down, best decade & best time to be a kid.
To me one of the greatest 80s song I've ever heard it gets me emotional remembering those great times those great 80s
This movie is like a soundtrack of the 1980s. I miss those years. Time machine please.
Time circuits on... flux capacitor fluxing...
Have you seen Stranger Things before? I know a cool tv series about time travel. They could have a new Quantum Leap series.
The 80s was the greatest
I was 10 to 20 from 1980 to 1990. I see 1,000s of comments how everyone wants to go back to tje 1980s. Lets see why. We were wild, young and free.
The 80's, second only to the '50's
This is one of the coolest songs that was recorded in the 1980's. One of those songs that when you hear it you turn up the volume and remember all the fun times you had when this song first came out. Incredible what one song can bring back so many memories and emotions. Would love to be a teenager again.
How true...gotta luv it.
Sorry kids you missed out on a great decade to grow up in.
I hate it
Read the book in the 8th grade when it came out, seen movie in 9th grade
Right on. My favorite movie.
Yes I agree. Mid 80's was great.
yeah , it was the 60s
Yep, graduated in 1981, this was pretty much how it was. Yep, miss them days...
no smartphones, Internet, but great times of music
hanging out at the arcade and smoking weed
Are there good times these years ?
You might be surprised that if you had no smartphone or internet your life would be just as good.
I know right this was during a time where you couldn't avoid people entirely and had to deal with them directly.
Thank best era EVER!!
miss the 80's like crazy.....

Same here.
Bring it back then dude! stop waiting for someone else to do it! BRING IT BACK!
The real '80's didn't start until about 1983. This movie has a late '70's feel to it.

One of the greatest movies of all time. I grew up in the 80s and miss it tremendously
JF, "One of the greatest movies of all time", Oh good lord, that is like saying London, Paris, Tokyo, "Edmonton".
Fast Times at Ridgemont High was one of the funniest movies about teenage life that I've ever seen. I'm so glad that I grew up and in one piece the way that myself and my brothers and peers drove back then .
I love this song, and movie!! Damn I miss the 80’s 😢
And in hindsight, a very well selected cast for its budget; many of whom kicked on to bigger things
I love this movie and era. Good simple times.. I wish I could go back in time❤️
The 80's,,best time ever!!
I graduated high school in 87 and even though I wasn't a cool kid the 70's and 80's were indeed a great time of freedom.
Rready for round 2 g"oy? You will comply, like the cattle you are and you won't do s"hit.
Yea if you can't remember some stuff that happened back then. You lived in the 80's
I was only 8 lol
Time flies
I’m pretty sure I’ll be listening to this music when I enter the nursing home years of my life! 😅❤❤
