"Across 110th Street" (1972) opening REMIXED

  • This is the Opening of 1972's "Across 110th Street" with RE-MIXED SOUNDTRACK: specifically instead of the original version of the song the film used, I've swapped out that track for the other more well known, more orchestrated recorded version, also with Bobby Womack on vocals, just to see hear how it would work. And man DOES it work -- albeit now minus some of those funky 70's rough edges the original version had (congas) which did give it that great 70s 'blaxplotation vibe. Anyway I've got both versions up here on the Tube so you can compare them, the original here
    • Across 110th Street (1...
    and this Remix one.
    See what you think!
If you don't agree Bobby Womack just kills this song, man something is wrong with you!
Tarantino used this version of the great Bobby Womack's song in his film, "Jackie Brown". Not once, he used the song twice (!) Under the Opening credits sequence with Pam Greer seeming to float through the airport on the moving sidewalk (pretty cool shot) and then in the closing scene with Robert Foster. Both times to very good effect. More recently the same track was used in "American Gangster". So I hope Mr. Womack is catching some nice royalties.
I hope you enjoy this - it seems very popular and I cant get over the number of hits it gets.
    More info:
"Across 110th Street" (1972) is one of the better Blaxploitation Films of the 1970's. It has some great 70's vibe and feel, especially for New York City and & Harlem back then.
"Across 110th Street", the song, is both well written and beautifully sung in this version - credited to "Bobby Womack and Peace". Bobby Womack is truly a gifted vocalist.
Finally here are the VERY WONDERFUL SONG LYRICS:
    www.uulyrics.co...
    "Across 110th Street"
    ------------------------------
I was the third brother of five,
Doing whatever I had to do to survive.
I'm not saying what I did was all right,
Trying to break out of the ghetto was a day to day
    fight.
Been down so long, getting up didn't cross my mind,
I knew there was a better way of life that I was just
    trying to find.
You don't know what you'll do until you're put under
    pressure,
Across 110th Street is a hell of a tester.
    Across 110th Street,
Pimps trying to catch a woman that's weak
    Across 110th Street,
Pushers won't let the junkie go free.
    Across 110th Street,
Woman trying to catch a trick on the street.
    Across 110th Street,
You can find it all in the street.
I got one more thing I'd like to y'all about right now.
Hey brother, there's a better way out.
Snorting that coke, shooting that dope man you're
    copping out.
Take my advice, it's either live or die.
You've got to be strong, if you want to survive.
The family on the other side of town,
Would catch hell without a ghetto around.
In every city you find the same thing going down,
Harlem is the capital of every ghetto town.
    Across 110th Street,
Pimps trying to catch a woman that's weak
    Across 110th Street,
Pushers won't let the junkie go free.
    Across 110th Street,
A woman trying to catch a trick on the street, ouh baby
    Across 110th Street,
You can find it all in the street.
    Yes he can, oh
Look around you, just look around you,
Look around you, look around you, uh yeah
    (Great stuff huh?)

I sat on the next table to Bobby Womack in a hotel in Shepherds Bush in London, we chatted for over 30 mins over breakfast. Approximately November 2012. He was so polite and respectful. He was genuinely interested in me and why I was there, it was the morning after a charity gala raising money for my daughter’s condition….Rett syndrome. The funniest thing is, he struck up a conversation with me first as he thought I was famous! (We were the only 2 people in the restaurant wearing dark shades and a hat!) We shook hands and introduced ourselves, when he said he was Bobby Womack, I couldn’t believe it! I told him how much I admired his music and he was grateful but more interested in my story and my life. A true gentleman RIP Mr Womack ❤

Once Bobby Womack, starts wailing on this song, I start to empathise with the armed robbers, and reflect on my own pain and failures in life. Then I go to the gym and hear songs like this in my head, and pray inwardly for light at the end of the tunnel, in this crazy trip we call life.

My dad worked for years at the 25th precinct on 119th. Man the stories he told about his years up there from 1970 - 1986 would blow our minds as kids. I remember asking him as an adult if he ever had to pull his gun on anyone, he told me he wore out his holster!

Great your dad was one of the racist cops that made black men's lives impossible if not for the grace of God. CONGRADULATIONS! Tell him there is a judgment waiting for evil cops in hell. But my dad was a good yea keep telling yourself that son. You're pops probably busted up more innocent black youths than he would care to mention you. I'm sure you have no problem with that though, for people like you as soon as any cop feels like arresting anyone the 'perp' is already guilty and no matter how much the cop harasses them or beats them blue before they are proven guilty, the cop was still 'just doing his job' right? God bless have a nice day.

There is no visual of 110th street. or Park Ave. I've lived in Harlem since 2007. Worked as a Delivery guy for over 6 years. I've delivered from 86 st East and West - all the way to the 140's. I looked at this video to see if I can recognize the locations. The first Scene has to be the West side highway on the 80's. One thing is clear the scenes are on West Harlem, Not East Harlem. All filmed above 110 street. They appear to be in the 120's and Above. Central Park ends on 110 street. You go from 5th Ave , which is the end point of the East Side westwards across Malcolm X ( Also Known as Lenox ) , Adam Clayton Powell BLV, and Frederick Douglas BLv, and End up On Manhattan AVe- which the starting point of the West side. None of it was shown in the so-called across 110 street.

You did a better job, I think, with marrying Womack's album version to the film intro. Everything just fit perfectly. The original film score was definitely lacking in arrangement compared to the album. One of my 10 favorite films that I would love to see re-made with today's resources (although the director's work with the experimental camera produced some great close-up shots for the time). Big thumbs up!

You know, there's so many great pics from this era, they all show that edgy, gritty side of NYC like late 60s early 70s (like French Connection, Taxi Driver, etc) and it looks like this fits that mold. I can't believe they don't show this on TV. Ebay, here I come. :)

Truth, They don't show these type of movies too often. Go on Amazon to purchase the DVD if you want it.

Check out Mike Patton's Peeping Tom band cover of this song, done live in Cologne, Germany in 2006. It's a very good IMO attempt by Mike and his band to step into some REALLY big shoes. This song is beyond a classic...

This song is VERY remixed. If you actually watch the original movie, "Across 110th Street", the version of this song at the beginning is very different. They really don't even sound like the same song
