    and there was a ton of damage so the car is TOTALED. We're just waiting to hear back on what happens next then we will look for a cheap, used, safe car to replace it for my wife and son to drive. Something that is AWD. Would love to get a Tesla Model 3 but it's not in the cards right now, but one day I hope that we both drive Tesla's.
    Driving home from a party on Christmas Eve 2017 we lost traction going down a very steep snow covered hill because it concealed a patch of ice and we went on the roller coaster ride of a lifetime. I had my wife and my 7 year old son Xander in the car with me & I've never felt so helpless. Please comment below on your similar experiences and let me know how long it's going to take for me to not be nervous behind the wheel again.

    Just a quick update as of 1/5/2018. The body shop called today and said the Chevy Volt is totaled and not repairable. The frame is tweaked and several other things are damaged and the cost to repair it even if the frame wasn't tweaked would exceed the $13k the car is worth. Thank you everyone for all the kind words and all the trolls for the SEO and engagement boost pushing this video over 100k views ;) I'll keep you guys updated with what vehicle we buy to replace it. A Tesla isn't in the cards right now because we simply can't afford it but we are thinking about finding another RX300 Lexus with 100k miles on it because you can get them cheap and they are super reliable, smooth, safe and AWD. That is what we had before we got the Chevy Volt and honestly it was a great vehicle, however the gas mileage isn't great but lucky for me my son no longer needs to be driven to a million therapy appointments a week so we don't drive nearly as much these days so it shouldn't be that much of a problem.
    You guys are awesome, thanks again and stay up to date by following @Barnacules on Twitter!

      Just a side note, invest in winter tires, traction trumps awd everytime, also when you start sliding and its clear youre not stopping disable abs and/or traction control, most cars have a button for this, while these help maintain control they unfortunately exasterbate the slide, since it prevents the wheels from stayed fully stopped.

    Small bit of advice from someone who went through this recently. Unless you have an official diagnosis from a doctor which specifically uses the word "whiplash", don't tell the insurance company that you have whiplash. Use general terms like neck pain, back pain, etc. The word whiplash is strongly associated with insurance fraud, and your claim can get denied or end up stuck in pending legal review hell forever.

      Great advise! Lucky for us my insurance agent has been the same for 18 years and he's a cool dude and knows I wouldn't commit insurance fraud. But this is fantastic advise, besides, my neck already feels much better so I shouldn't need any medical recovery from it unless I get a flare up of some kind.

  • @steffen9948
    @steffen9948 Před 6 lety +12

    I'm sorry dude, but you're saying you are a "trained rallydriver" and surfaces like that is your thing? Why the actual fuck would you go out when you don't even know how bad those tires are? I sell tires for a living in Norway, where we have real winters, and I know what a good wintertire looks like. The ones you were driving with you family in it? Looks like a deathtrap.
    Don't put shame on the term "rally driver" by calling your self that, when you can't even handle a little ice and snow. This accident was your doing, don't you dare say anything else. Glad your family is ok though. Don't take them out in a deathtrap like that again.

      Not wearing seatbelts sometimes saves lives, my friend's father ended up sliding off a corner and rolling his car down a hill. He wasn't wearing a seatbelt and got thrown in the backseat, the front of the car was completely crushed, unrecognisable and if he wasnt thrown into the back he would have been crushed. Lucky him.

    Not to dismiss or minimize your experience, but keep in mind that new cars arent hard to total. They are meant to squish up and absorb impacts. Its a double edge because it is what make bad crashes survivable but it also makes them very easy to total. Ive seen cars totaled from 10mph impacts with road signs... It doesnt take much sometimes.

    • @Stettafire
      @Stettafire Před 6 lety +10

      Yeah, in all fairness I think survivability for the people is more important than the car. But, yes, you are right. They are made to have 'crumple zones' to try and avoid injury to the people on board.

    • @GearheadGarden
      @GearheadGarden Před 6 lety +3

      --Kretiini--Wrong, obviously someone whose never driven or owned one unless you think "old" is 2005 that is. Cars have had seat belts for 40 years, crumple zones for 30, Anti-lock brakes and airbags for 20 and BTW, new cars are more frequently totaled precisely because they're designed to sacrifice themselves. For an insurance company to total a car is just a numbers game. Even minor damage can cost 1000's and if it exceeds the value of the car they'll total it. It's about getting out as cheaply as they can and nothing more. Being stupid while driving regardless of what you're driving can still get you killed so put the responsibility where it belongs, on the driver.

      AWD won't help too much going down hill on ice. Snow tires would be the best best but we dont get snow too often here so they arent that great of an investment most years.

    • @aljowen
      @aljowen Před 6 lety

      The STi wouldn't have fared much better. Both cars have 4 wheels, both have 4 brakes. Both have the braking power to lock all 4 wheels, so the only thing that will help you out is tyres and perhaps ABS. Without snow tyres its probably a forgone conclusion in any car, whether it be Jeep, Land Rover or Ferrari.
      4 Wheel drive will help you start moving, it won't help you stop though.

There was a 4x4 truck crashed not far from us in the ditch from sliding down the hill and he snow tires on his truck and weight in the back.

    I would like to thank everyone for the kind words and positive reinforcement after a really rough month in December 2017. All of you nice and caring guys and gals are honestly the reason I keep making videos and keep live streaming. Without you there would be no reason to continue making videos and sharing my experiences, knowledge and opinions with you good, bad or otherwise. I honestly love what I do and even though I get frustrated, stressed and depressed at times and walk away, I always come back knowing I've positively impacted many peoples lives and the messages and emails I receive from people that have accelerated their life plan or picked a new path because of me really warms my heart and I want to continue doing this as long as humanly possible! ❤
    This might sound strange but I also would like to thank all the *TROLLS* that have left disgusting, visceral, self serving, insecure comments for the purpose of trying to get a response or inflict mental damage or illicit a response from other viewers. Please consider this your bulk response and I bet it's not what you're expecting me to say. I absolutely understand the pain that you're going through and that behind your smile you're really suffering and crying out for attention and friendship on some level. I know this because I used to do what you are doing now and it's easy to feel empowered and useful when you can prove to yourself that you can push another persons head under water and stand on their shoulders, trust me, I get it. When you're feeling mad and you want to punch something it's often easier to find someone on the internet that might have obvious insecurities and try to exploit those to build up your own personal self-steam or just to entertain yourself because you're lonely, trust me, I get it, you're obviously not alone.
    I also understand that impressing your friends and trying to be the alpha in your pack IRL or online is important to a young person when they are insecure and sometimes that means showing off how cruel and mean you can be so people will fear you and you'll see it as having respect, trust me, I get it. Now, I'm going to say something no other CZcamsr has probably said, I am going to encourage you to continue trolling me. I want you to continue to comment on my videos, I want you to continue to respond to people you disagree with, I want you to continue making me your primary target and I'm going to tell you why. There is a think called SEO (Search Engine Optimization) that drives the search algorithm on both CZcams and the Google search engine. One of the biggest factors that determines which videos are on page 1 when someone searches for a related term is, you guessed it, the comment count.
    CZcams see's comments, likes and dislikes as something called *Engagement* and value it above all else. The reason for this is people that interact with a video and leave comments are paying more attention to that video and are a much better platform to serve advertisements on so they can maximize the number of real people watching the videos and not just people that left things playing in the background. Whenever you leave a comment regardless of it's nature (Nice or Trolling) you are boosting my SEO and placing me higher in the ranking when someone searches for a term related to my video. This means that while you're letting off steam and venting and making yourself feel better by attacking an overweight virgin for life mothers basement dwelling small penis packing idiot (I've been called far worse) I'm benefiting from your comment boosting the SEO metric and that is a beautiful thing.
    So please, by all means keep on trolling, keep on responding and keep on interacting. It helps you blow off steam or prove to yourself that you're a tough guy and at the same time it helps my channel grow and keeps getting me closer to a million subscribers so it's a complete win-win for everyone!
    I discovered all of this after talking to my friend that works at a Google when I asked him why CZcams doesn't deal with troll comments more seriously or aggressively trying to filter racism, hate, shaming, sexism, etc from the comments section. He simply said, because it would hurt the content creators and then gave me all of the information above and he's absolutely right. So, my 2018 New Years resolution is to ignore hate and let it do it's job helping me grow and reach a larger audience. Deleting comments and blocking people only serves to slow that momentum. It turns out that trolls generally are the most loyal fans because they are so persistent and leave more comments then anyone else and will even camp waiting for a new video to come out just to leave a dislike or comment and those initial dislikes and comments boost a video really fast so I'm going to clear the block list in 2018 and let it happen.
    Truth is I don't see most of the negative comments anyways since I have filters in place in the CZcams dashboard to not show comments with certain keywords and phrases and though it's not perfect it does a pretty good job getting most of it so I can spend more time responding to you guys that actually care and say encouraging, uplifting stuff or ask serious questions. I love you all and understand the pain of being a troll or cyberbully, I really do. See you guys in 2018, it's going to be an amazing year and I hope you stay safe and enjoy your New Year because it only happens, you guessed it, once a year! 👍

    Snow tires would have more then likely prevented this. If there's 1 thing I learned while living in Seattle for 4 years, is no one knows what to do when it snows. I was in Washington one winter where 1 inch of snow literally shut down 520. Like, public transpiration buses abandoned in the middle of the freeway. I had no problem in my car with snow tires. All season tires are no season tires. Glad you and your family are okay.

    • @halsoy
      @halsoy Před 6 lety

      I beg to differ. Norwegian here. We use winter tires, and a decent chunk of us still use studded winter tires. It's not illegal to drive on summer tires during winter. Nor is it illegal to drive on winter tires during summer (studs being the exception because of added road wear and air pollution). You are however liable to be charged with reckless driving if you cause an accident because of the wrong rubber compound. That's because you're not technically doing all that's possible to avoid an accident if you conscientiously drive on icy conditions with summer tires. In other words, you're not fully in control of your vehicle. And insurance companies will almost always deny any payout if you do, simply because you're technically in violation of your contract at that point.
      And saying that winter tires are expensive (which I hear a lot of americans say) doesn't make any sense to me. I have "expensive" tires, being continental contivikingcontact's. But they are also the best tires available for my conditions. And even at that, a full set is only 6-700 dollars. These tires will last me at least 2-3 seasons (I don't run tires more than 3 seasons as rubber actually has an expiration date). So at 200 dollars/season it's not expensive.

We use studded tires in Northern Europe and they are one of the greatest inventions ever.

      Same in Sweden. It's great for the safety of course, but it's also inconvenient. Winter Tires cost just as much as Summer tires, you have to store them and change tires 2 times a year. (From Summer to Winter and back again).

      Many Americans see no need for winter tires... Yeah, it's extra money you have to spend, but so what? Also, it is quite common to get studless winter tires here. Quite uncommon to find studded tires, unless you're in a place with serious winters that demand it, like up in the mountains.

    It’s a win when everyone walks away. No matter the tire, driver, or vehicle accidents happen and it can be any part of that triangle that causes it, or a combo of all three. All that matters is that everyone is ok. Kudos to the commenter who mention not saying whiplash to an insurance company or driver. Whiplash is a very specific neck injury that you may or may not have and it is by no means the worse. Always generalize until you know the true extent of the damage, which may not happen for a very long time depending on how you heal.

    • @hgpo27
      @hgpo27 Před 6 lety

      Misc Pete The tires may be not appropriate, but not everyone can afford new or used snow tires for their vehicles. The important problem here was speed

    • @Northrendish
      @Northrendish Před 6 lety +1

      hgpo27 that logic is crap. you could say not everyone can afford to replace their brakes. He can definitely afford it and not using snow tires is just asking for disaster.

    • @hgpo27
      @hgpo27 Před 6 lety

      That logic is not crap. No matter how good your snow tires are, ice will make you slide. In this scenario, ice under snow is not going to be nullified by your snow tires, if you are going 30-40 mph on a decline. So, especially if you cannot afford snow tires, or even if you can, speed is the biggest problem. You can drive fast on ice better with snow tires, but your stopping power isn't going to be helped enough in this scenario. Before recommending better tires, recommend safer driving. Otherwise, people may continue to think they run the road with snow tires and 4wd.

    • @nordmannordmann
      @nordmannordmann Před 6 lety +2

      hgpo27 you definitely don't have a clue. Using summer tyres on snow and ice gives tracktion close to zero. It is like asking for disaster. Winter tyres makes a whole lot of difference. I use winter tyres for several months on winter roads, and drives safely and happily. Without them I would have slided off the roads endless of times. Of course, using appropriate speed for the conditions are also needed, but that should be self explanatory.

    • @nordmannordmann
      @nordmannordmann Před 6 lety +2

      Jo Louie - Even if it doesn't snow, there's still a ton of potential for black ice and icy conditions. Whenever the temperature is reliably below 40 degrees Fahrenheit as a high, the compounds of winter tires will save your bacon. Winter tires stay soft, all seasons just get rock hard.
      Ask yourself this: What is my insurance deductible? Pretty sure a set of cheap steelies and winter tires is going to be less and you've got the added benefit of not hurting yourself, your family or others as a direct result. Accidents like this are 100 percent avoidable, even with the most ham fisted driver.

My father used to be a moter mechanic for 30 years and i can tell you electronical cars come in far more often for one reason or another. Just jump starting a car can fry it these days. The old one can survived almost anything and still keep going. They were as indestructible as cars can be. Driving 50mph in that kinda condition is very irresponsible, you should have driven a lot slower taking the curved roads and all the snow and ice into consideration. im happy you all came out of it okay, in the end its just a car and family is a lot more important. and you getting out driving is very important so your fear of driving wont get worse.

      sorry, didn't catch that, i would recommend getting some good winter tires for safety, here in Norway that's legally required but that doesn't always mean that wont happen, but as i said im happy that the damage mainly went to the car, im surprised the airbags didn't go off, i would check up on that. also get out driving, don't let the fear stop you, i have done my mistakes myself, once got stuck in the snow after pin balling between two road edges on the mountain with no cell reception for 6-7 hours. fighting the fear to drive again is really important. honestly you did a great job, your kid isn't hurt and you didn't do any damage to other people. making changes to that road should have been a priority, i didn't see how it was during your accident but if there is no maintenance then that road got that name for a reason.

      Against the law in a lot of states, when it only snows a few days a year in your state, and does excessive damage to the roads why would you get studded tires anyway. studless winter tires, yes.

    • @edovonstrudla
      @edovonstrudla Před 6 lety

      In that case solution is like you say studless winter tires and simple rule that i was learned when i got my driving licens here in Sweden, adjust your speed to the surface you are driving on. Many ppl seems to forget that.

    • @Barnacules
      @Barnacules  Před 6 lety

      Agreed, I need studded snow tires on all the cars. But also realize we would not have left our house if we knew it was going to snow, we had to get home so my wife could take her meds and my son could get to sleep from a party. But, we were very lucky and I'm not worried about all the negative comments, I know that New Years stresses people out a lot and they are just looking for a target.

    How fast were you going on the road before you hit that sheet of ice?
    And you can't manually shift into neutral without turning the car on? Wow, some engineering marvel that is... what if the battery was also dead? Thats just another inconvenience.

    • @dllbits
      @dllbits Před 6 lety

      +MetallicBlade You shift into neutral and the car will accelerate even more since there is no connection between the engine and the tires, that's why Trucks have to drive in 1 or 2 gear on steed downhills to keep them from accelerating too much and losing control over the vehicule

    • @halsoy
      @halsoy Před 6 lety

      There's probably a release somewhere. On my E-class you have to have the ignition on to get it out of park, normally. But under the center console, going in from the cup holder, there's a mechanical lever you can flip using i.e. a screw driver that releases the transmission. I'm sure something like that exists on this too.

    • @DodgyBrothersEngineering
      @DodgyBrothersEngineering Před 6 lety

      He was suggesting it be shifted into neutral during the accident, that would be plain absurd. He was talking about after the accident when you can see from the front wheels skidding that it is still in gear with no way to easily get it back into neutral without the car being turned on. The car had a spak attack from the hit causing the electronics to go crazy.
