For the people questioning the tape speed and overall audio quality, two points - first, the tape speed is correct, Tony and Geezer started tuning down to C# (a step and a half down) right before the Master Of Reality album and played everything live in that tuning from very early '71 through '75; I guess back in those days having multiple guitars & basses for different tunings wasn't thought about as an option. And as far as audio quality goes, the vast majority of bootlegs from the 70's weren't exactly great quality, unless you were a band like the Grateful Dead who taped all of their own shows through the board to reel to reel. Audience recorded boots were limited by the quality of the technology of the day...we take for granted now that we all walk around with mini computers in our pockets - back in the day, if you wanted to record a concert, you really had to put in some serious effort.

There is a hard to find bootleg recording out there that has Tony and Geez tuned down a flatter step and a half that's closer to 2 full steps. When I used to play in a Sabbath tribute band in the 90's, I had one guitar specially tuned this way for just Into the Void, Children of the Grave, After Forever and Lord of This World (yes, we played a lot of the heavier riffage songs), because it was so fucking heavy sounding that way.

Great point. I've got bootlegs of shows from Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and a few other bands in the 70s. The sound quality varies but not much different than this. I also have a lot of Grateful Dead "bootlegs" and the quality is so great that it sounds like a like a f'ing studio releases CD.

The tapespeed is correct. They just tuned down and happened to play some songs too slow. Listen to "Black Sabbath". The ending is the normal speed that's on the album while the rest of he song is almost glacial, which means if the tape was slowed down they must have played the ending absurdly fast.

Count William Jannusch They did it for some songs on Master Of Reality, Vol. 4 and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath as well. Songs like Children Of The Grave, Lord Of This World, Into The Void, Supernaut, Snowblind, Under The Sun, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, A National Acrobat and Killing Yourself To Live. I think on later albums they started going back to standard tuning. Also note, After Forever is also tuned down, but it's down one step, and not one and a half steps.

Master Of Reality through Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and most of Sabotage is in C# tuning (one and a half steps down) and they played everything live during that period in that tuning. Hearing the songs from the first two albums in that tuning is a trip...the song Black Sabbath sounds extra evil especially. By Technical Ecstasy they went back to standard E tuning for whatever reason.

Actually the treble boosted channel on Marshall and Vox was an attempt to build in the amount of treble that you'd get from a Fender amps bright channel. Slow? Difficult question to answer. What set Sabbath apart at the time was the "drag" that they created. Also, you have to take into account that on the first album, ozzy's voice was much lower -- and hardly sounded the same since then. When they embarked on their coke days, the sound sped up / as did their tempo and the tone of ozzy's voice. My guess/answer: 80% the times 20% the reel to reel. thanks for posting such a clean copy!

There were so many instances where you could hear the people in the audience go "Whoa" or "Thats f*ckin heavy man." Even in standard tuning they were devastating for the time period. Even though we've all heard Iron Man a bunch of times, many of us growing up with it as kids. I always think about what someone's reaction to that song would've been in the early 70's before anything was remotely close to sounding that way. That kick drum and then when the apocalyptic note kicks in that sounds like some demonic roar coming straight out of the abyss had to have made your hair stand on end.
