    During another one of his Jaywalk, Cutler talks about the way he trained his whole life (high volume) versus all the new methods a lot people use today. which is best? and could he have been better training a different way than he did all these years. A very interesting subject to say the least.

    You probably dont remember but when you first won the Olympia. I bought wrist straps from you and they went to the wrong address. I emailed to ask where they were and I'll never forget it. You called me personally and I was at work but you left me a voicemail. I saved that voicemail for years. My jaw dropped. You're so down to earth and a true inspiration. Thank you. That small gesture to call me and tell me you were at the post office to personally make sure I got those wrist straps. Truly amazing. I honestly thought you were too big to contact me personally. Love you Jay! You're still the best. Thank you for everything you do! You are my idol and continue to be. I would love to train with you sometime.

    I have been doing high volume training since the beginning of 2020. I have gained at least 10 lbs of muscle. My back is becoming my staple, when it was my weakest. Also, since we are all quarantined, I bought my own weights (barbell and dumbbells). At first I thought I would be limited in how many exercises I can do, but the opposite has happened. I have seen gains using high volume sets, and old school techniques like deadlifts; front squats, clean and presses, bench presses etc. I am 40 years old, 5’6” 200 lbs, and train everyday and feel I am better shape now than when I was in my early 20’s.

      Well ya makes sense, there is definitely a limit to how much "muscle damage" you can do before it actually starts harming tou more than helping you. Look at guys like Dorian yates who damaged his muscle so bad that the bicep snapped and his shoulder go f-ed so the muscles atrophied and are full of scar tissue. This whole "you gotta lift heavy" to get big is just nonsense. I increased by 45% or so my squat 1rm in a year and I never even once did anything near my 1rm the whole time I was training.

      Can you explain this high volume training a little more? Is it just high number of sets with 10 reps?
      Also if you're doing a really high number of sets shouldn't you be able to drop the reps?

    • @zacharyoverlien6050
      @zacharyoverlien6050 Před rokem

      @RadicalNeon_MuscleMachine volume is going to vary from person to person. You also need a certain level of intensity(RPE) as well. It's typically anywhere from 10-20 sets per muscle group per week. 6-12 repetitions. Closer to 6 the closer to your one rep max percentage you should be. Closer to 12 the further from the one rep max percentage you should be.

Now I follow a more low volume high intensity approach to keep progressing but from year 3 to 7-8 years of training I kept on growing training the way Jay does, hitting every damn angle there is to hit... I was discussing walking outside with a friend his week. He said why bother, just join a gym. I couldn't impress on him how much better it is being outside in the sun, in nature, fresh air, no noise, than on a treadmill. In the northeast, those days are limited, you gotta take them when you can. I go to a local park and do the trails for about 60 minutes (its a big park). Its not just exercise, its a healing experience. On bad weather days, I do the stationary bike indoors, and its boring as hell. So yeah Dave is right, longer videos, something to watch while doing cardio.

There is even a section called "Refeeds" where he explains when and how to use those (simplified) "higher carbohydrate" days. But then again he also goes in to many details in that great book.

    It's one thing watching a 20min video on how to train a group effectively but it's another thing remembering everything and implementing it all into a workout, but I do remember parts of each and they're all additional weapons in the arsenal.

    Jay is it that you're actually trying to increase lean tissue mass as in truly grow the muscle fibers or are you trying to increase your glycogen stores?
    5 to 8 reps grows real muscle, 10 to 12 reps builds a little real muscle but also does some volumizing of glycogen stores, 15 reps is usually maximum glycogen storage growth but does almost nothing to increase lean mass/ contractile tissue.
    So what actually is the goal here for the pros, or do you guys do all of the above?
    Thanks

    I am 62 and used very simple routiens and really no machines. Well with really bad shoulders perfect form smith machine benches with flys for 30 reps just blow them up with a super shape. I get this super concentration in the pecs and have a perfect connection between the mind and muscle. My joke with my friends is Mucho pecito/ Mucho repeado.

    i mostly listen to the priciples uf the science based community (non-enhanced) because they need to think about optimising training/nutrition even more than enhanced athletes because the can't just up the dose if they reach a plateau.. so i feel like natural lifters tend to actually have greater knowledge because they need to do so in order to still grow

    🐐 The goat he is so smart when it comes to bodybuilding, that for me when Ronnie was winning and he was second, was rigged, he was insane and no bubble gut, that's why I think, my personal opinion, he enhanced what Arnold did, and is the greatest bodybuilder of all times, just look and Ronnie and yates 😱 they bad man... This dude is like he never suffer from over training etc,... And he was 300 pounds and 265 as well so, he has nothing be jealous from any of those guys, he was Savage as well, and healthy enjoying his life....
